like there's something about how Callum is the one who helps teach Rayla what the right thing to do is (because his cycle speech inspires her: "You did") at least in her own mind, whereas Callum sees her as a source of inspiration ("You're right") and how Rayla maintains her faith in Callum to always do the right thing (S4 + "Humans were clever. Humans could do anything, they could be anything, they could take their own fates and change them") even when she's messed up, and how she continues not to like... rose-tinted glasses isn't the right word, but she truly deeply trusts Callum to 1) always do the right thing (even while in S5, particularly onwards of 5x08, Callum is probably going to start doubting whether there are scenarios where there is a 'right thing to do' because he just got presented with like 5 where there isn't) and 2) being absolutely willing to enable and forgive whatever 'not right things' he does while not fully addressing it, cause Rayla might disagree with you and/or turn turn against you if/when you do awful things (hi Runaan in S1, hi Callum in 2x07) but her bond of love for you really is unbreakable

in the first set of colored panels we got a while back, of Ruthari and Rayla at breakfast time, the husbands have cups and etc colored in each other's colors - super adorable. In these new pages, Ethari's crying on the first page, and when we see him a second time, he's holding a purple handkerchief and Runaan has his hand on Ethari's shoulder to comfort him. Later, Ethari offers a turquoise handkerchief to Rayla. If the husbands really lean into that "each other's colors" thing, that means Runaan gave Ethari his purple handkerchief when he saw him crying, and then Ethari tried to give Rayla his own, unused turquoise one. Runaan doesn't say a lot, but he's very attentive to Ethari and he acts quickly to take care of him whenever he can. Please bury me for I am now deceased!

love the way they've shown the mounts looking hurt at Rayla's sharp words, as stand-ins for their elves... I imagine that's how Runaan and Ethari feel on the inside, even if they try to hide it by leaning on the table/crossing arms

Runaan's panicked slide as he sees Rayla looking to her left, his pointing even though she can't see it - he is desperate to direct her to her own room instead of the one she's closer to walking into... Runaan honey... what did you forget to tidy away this morning, hmm? Anything... embarrassing? (he will never forget again)

Runaan's zip back to Ethari's side as Rayla slams the door, to put a steadying hand on his arm as he winces against the loud noise... with the way Ethari really jumps in the sketched panel we got earlier, when Rayla and Runaan both slam doors, it seems he might have a sensitivity to loud sounds... which is Ungood for a craftsman who makes lots of metal weaponry! Poor Ethari - but Runaan understands and helps - when he isn't the cause himself

I gotta gather my thoughts after the first watch of season 4 omg !!SPOILERS!!

First and foremost I don't think this season was bad at all but I do think that it indeed could be better and doesn't quite hold up with seasons 1-3. I recently rewatched (and with recently I mean the days before thursday) the previous seasons and oh my I really forgot how much I loved them and OH how good the pacing was in season 1 and 2 especially.

For example I got the feeling that 4x01 to 4x03 kinda dragged on and made the impression they want to delay the main plot for as long as possible. (What could be explained by the fact that they have 3 whole seasons to fill still) While the first 3 1/2 episodes of season 1 play out during one whole day and you don't even notice it. Kinda a bad example tho since it is the beginning of the series soo another good example would be the first two episodes of season 2 which handled continuity of the plot and problems our babies still needed to solve on the way SO good while also staying at the Moon Nexus and goofin' around for almost 2 whole episodes.

Buuut I'm definitely gonna rewatch this season because I binged it on thursday quite harshly and that's usually a bad idea and not the way I like to watch my shows lol. I just missed them soo much o.O

Okay now with that out of the way..

OH MY GOD RAYLA, my poor children.. So much sadness :( Okay I understand that Callum and Rayla indeed had no time to talk and A he didn't want to (which is legit and def understandable) and B they had more important things to talk about but I'm SO dissapointed that not one of them asked what Rayla did in this 2 years?!? Like huh?! Not even Ezran. I'm so baffled about this it blows my mind. Did she went to see Ethari at some point? (I don't think so because she said when she gave her blades to Rex that she thinks she's not going to see Runaan or Ethari ever again soo) Did she travel the whole of Xadia all on her own until she found Stella and just came to the realization that she wants to go back and stop her search out of the blue?? What the fuck happend in two years that's a damn long time gurl

I LOVED Ezrans speech and the song played by Corvus. So powerful while Claudia and Ibis fight to the death omg very epic

Aaravos straight up possesing Callum through the heckin mirror OMG and the dragons needing to beat him at his own game because he's too strong and they couldn't risk a direct confrontation aah

Makes me wonder if he is going to be a flat evil villain like the Fire lord 🥴 now that Viren has half a redemption arc lmao

OH Viren omg that realization about how he wants to spend his remaining 30 days with what he has left aka Claudia was so natural in my opinion after seeing him having a full on panic attack and being afraid of heights after falling to his death. It was out of character buut still kindaaaa maybeee felt more believable than Callum and Raylas meeting uhmm

I said it it was realllyy awkward and not the 'normal' kind of awkward it just wasn't very... it was not the way I expected them to react I'm surprised Callum actually kept his shit quite good together and Raylas lacking apology and her reaction also felt rly out of place. Tho I think she will find some words, some better words than just sorry, next season. And I hope we will hear from her what she did and where she went and she hopefully reflects on what she did and why she went away and how she hurt Callums feelings badly and aaaAAAAAH

Did you hear how he called Viren legendary!? What the heck is wrong with this boys morals? Calling someone who brought down the capitol of the sunfire elves, killed their queen and almost raged a huge war on all of Xadia legendary? I love how he talks with Viren about his childhood and I rly like how Viren himself starts to listen to him more seriously but I'm concerned about this little elf :(

Did you notice that the human girl who revealed Aaravos' treason has only one arm? Quite the detail but I thought it was nice tdp goes every extra mile for representation

I LOVED the conflict in Lux Aurea between Janai and her brother. Best subplot this season. How they talked about their people worrying and then they showed us an actual conflict and the consequences it brings and how Janai deals with it in her own and a modern way. I love that they take their time and give reasons behind the actions of the characters and how they continue to make the world feel more alive by showing us how humans and elves manage to get along with each other. Janai's brother (sry forgot his name) portrays that typical traditional worldview and I love how it stands in contrast with Janai who takes on being queen, a role which she didn't even want to have, with a fresh and open mindset influenced by the humans they now live with. Hehe influenced by Amaya hehe *blushes*

I also love the symbolism of the sun seed as a new start a beginning of an era in unity *cries*

The only problem I have with this is, that no matter what, if Janai's brother would have won the duel between him and his sister, he also couldn't bring back their old capital city, which he used as a reason at some point. And if he could he would have tried surely by now? Or is that just me?

Seeing the gap widen between Soren and Claudia BrEAks mY HeArT but it also feels very believable the way they interacted when Soren found and briefly captured her. Claudias villain arc is certainly undeniable and it makes me sad :(

OH AND SOREN!! Ah the best boi (ofc next to Callum my dork and Ezran being the most reasonable -now SO grown up O.O- best boi heh) he really shines this season in my opinion with some nice jokes as always but also with being a great friend and protector of the king. I love how he tells Rayla how Callum felt when she left him. He has indeed made the jump from "only" being the funny and strong goofball with the evil dad to the lovable and just friend who does everything in his way to protect and help the people he loves and it makes me SO happy omg.

Someone thought the others don't appreciate him enough for what he does and I gotta agree a bit. The look on his face when Zubeia appreciated his moves aah he was so proud x). But they were very worried about him when they found his armor, so yeah I guess more interactions with the boys pls \ o.o /

Sooo these are *most* of my thoughts I think for now. Correct me if I got something wrong- it was a wild watching session. Ofc I'm very much loving Rayllum smiling at and hugging each other after 2 years being apart :') and I'm very excited which direction the story will take. I'm now gonna rewatch the season and go cry some more about it yaay

Rayllum Fanfic rant

Okay, so this isn’t a negative rant as much as me musing about wanting certain things. But I’ve been reading a bunch of Rayllum fics, some popular ones included, and they are so gooood! Omg. But they are also all mega slow burns. Don’t get me wrong. The slow burns are delicious in the build up and how they pay off. But I’m dying to see some quick hook ups so I can see the relationship cuteness and angst unfold in the rest of the fic! I mean half the charm of the ship in the show was that they fell fast and were honest about it. Really, Rayla was flirty as fuck in season 3, practically taking him on dates, dancing with him, and as soon as she thought he was into her, she didn’t hesitate to kiss Callum. It was so refreshing to me as a woman when she fell first and acted first. I want some gutsy, flirty Rayla in my fics! I also need more Rayla POV. So many are Callum focused which is odd because in the show, I felt Rayllum was a bit more heavy on Rayla’s screentime/POV. It’s a bit more focused on why she loves him than why he loves her, I would argue. Also, I just need some musings about how cute she finds him. Not just pining for him, but about how happy Callum makes her. Remember her fangirl speech to Sol Regem about how awesome she thinks Callum is? Rayla gave the “how awesome you are” speech before her boyfriend did! So where’s my paragraphs where Rayla is thinking how cute Callum looks when he draws and how pretty his eyes are? It’s always Callum finding her beautiful in the stories. I want to see her not just pine, but swoon. Okay rant over. I love love love the fics I’ve been reading and maybe I’ll start stumbling on more of what I’m wanting to see next with the ones I have lined up to read. I also want to take a crack at writing Rayllum fics so hopefully I don’t hypocritically do the opposite of what I’m expressing here. Again, this isn’t meant to be a criticism as much as me voicing desires for what I’m aching to see next. Please keep writing Rayllum however you all like, and I’ll keep eating it up! XD

I've always had to hide myself from everyone. I had to learn from a young age how to do it. I've always been told how, when I was a baby, I was found at the border and given to my father after saying he would take care of me, and he has ever since. I'm a hybrid, half Moonshadow Elf and half human, so I had to learn as soon as possible how to do magic in order to create illusions to hide my appearance. I remember when I first did it at the age of ten, I was so happy, all those years of covering my head and half of my face were over, I didn't even have to paint my eyebrows anymore; I could finally be normal and treated like any other human in Katolis.

Life from that moment really changed for me. My father was a respected general so I'd always lived in the castle, but I started hanging out with the other kids, Prince Callum and Lord Viren's children. We quickly became inseparable and did pretty much everything together. I think it's safe to say that everyone knew about my special friendship with Soren. I don't know why, but we just understood each other even from a young age, and it only got stronger as the years passed. He was always there for me as I was there for him, he'd helped me a lot when my father passed away and I trusted him with my life, we knew everything about each other... except for what I really was. I thought about telling him a couple times but I knew it was wrong, and I knew how much humans hated elves, even Soren. But this was the life I had, I was destined to hide from the people I cared about the most. Or at least, that was until Rayla appeared in our lives.

The two Princes, Rayla and I discovered that the egg of the dragon prince hadn't been destroyed, and we were going to take it home to its mother. During our trip, I decided to tell them the truth, if Rayla had been accepted as our friend then there was no reason to fear anymore. Thankfully, I was right, nothing changed between us and I even stopped using magic to hide my true appearance. It was weird but at the same time it felt right, it was freeing.

We've been staying with Lujanne for a few days now, enjoying the little dragon's company and giving ourselves a little break. Rayla and I knew we had to go, though, but the Princes weren't very interested on leaving yet, so we agreed to stay one more day. Everything seemed fine but the elven girl and I felt a bit unsafe, so we decided to take turns and keep guard in case something or someone decided to appear.

It was my turn to keep guard so I was looking for Rayla to replace her but when I found her she was lying on the ground, surrounded by two people. I prepared myself to attack, thanking my father for all those sword and combat lessons he'd make me take, I wouldn't let them hurt her.

"Get away from her!" I yelled as I approached them, but I stopped when I realized who they were. Soren and Claudia were standing a few feet away from me and it felt like I hadn't seen them in a lifetime.

"Oh, great, another elf?" Soren said. "So what, there's like a whole other group of you?" I could sense the hatred and disgust in his voice. He didn't recognize me, neither of them did. Before I could say or do something, Rayla woke up and took them by surprise.

She started fighting with Soren and I got out of my trance only when Callum showed up, trying to calm everyone down. He was happy to see them and I would've been too, but I just couldn't believe what had happened.

"She kidnapped you and Prince Ezran, how can she be good?" asked Claudia about Rayla. "And it seems like she didn't act alone because there's another one of them too!".

"No, wait! There was no kidnapping, Claudia. We went with her by choice" explained the older Prince. "And what do you mean by 'another one of them'?"

"Well, what does that mean then?" said Soren, pointing at me. Hearing him speak about me like that was the worst thing I could've ever imagined.

"That is (Y/N)" answered Rayla, clearly annoyed at the blonde boy.

"What do you mean? (Y/N)'s hair is not white and they don't have horns, or pointy ears, or those weird things under their eyes! Stop lying!"

"Soren, she's right. It's me" as soon as I said that I used my magic to change how I looked, going back to how they knew me. "I'm a hybrid, I've been using magic ever since I was ten to blend in".

I could tell he was shocked and he opened his mouth to say something but the words never came out.

"Listen, guys, it's late. Let's just get some rest and cool off, okay?" We all agreed to Callum's words and went back with the others but I could tell there was a thick tension in the air. And that tension stayed there until we all went to bed.

When we woke up, we had breakfast together and I started using my magic again, at least when Claudia and Soren were around, I already knew what they thought of me and I didn't want to put up with their looks too. I spent all day learning some magic with Lujanne, it was nice to learn from an actual mage and it didn't hurt to get my mind off some things for a while.

When I was done for the day and ready to go to bed, I heard someone knocking the door.

"Come in" I said loudly.

"You'll never guess what happened today, (Y/N)" said Rayla as she entered the room, we had become good friends in the last couple days and it felt nice to have someone kind of like me around. She told me about what Soren had done earlier that day, and about how she tried to talk to Callum but he didn't pay any attention to her. "And I just talked to Lujanne because maybe she would help me and I realized that the only way for them to completely trust me is by telling them the truth, even if it hurts them".

"The truth? What do you mean, Rayla?"

"This is not easy to say but... Their father is dead and I've been wanting to tell Callum but I just don't know how to and I-"

"Hey, Rayla. It's okay, you're just trying to protect them, I'm sure they will understand. We're friends, remember?" I interrupted her, trying to clam her down. She let out a deep breath and nodded with her head. "Can I tell you something?"

"Of course, (Y/N). We're friends, remember?" she said, repeating my words. I smiled weakly before continuing.

"I'm not totally surprised about what you said about Soren, not after how he reacted with me at least. And you know what's the worst part? I'm sure that his father is behind what happened earlier today. I know him but he just needs Viren's approval, you know? And it hurts, a lot actually. I just hope he realizes there are people who truly care about him before it's too late".

"You like him, don't you?" I opened my eyes at her words, trying to deny it but all she did was smile. "You're not very good at hiding it, (Y/N)".

"I guess I'm not. I just hope that deep down you are wrong and that they both realize that what they're trying to do is wrong".

"I hope so, too" she hugged me tight, wrapping her arms around my neck. "It's late, I think I'm gonna go to bed" she said as she started heading towards the door to go to her room.

"Go, I'll stay up a bit longer".

And suddenly that 'bit longer' turned into at least two hours. I couldn't sleep, I just kept thinking about Soren and his attitude. I decided to get out of my room and go to the Moon Nexus, if I was going to stay awake thinking about things at least I would have a nice view while doing it.

I was standing against the edge when I heard someone coming. I started hiding my true appearance out of instinct but was interrupted in the middle of the act.

"You don't have to do that". Soren's voice sounded loud in contrast to the silence of the night. I stopped using my magic and he came to my side. "Can't sleep?"

"Yeah... What made you change your mind?" He stood there looking confused, not understanding what I was talking about. "Yesterday you didn't even recognize me without the illusion and even looked disgusted at the sight of me. What's changed?"

"I noticed you hide your elf-like features when I'm around, but I've never seen you being more you than when you stop hiding" I looked at him confused, I thought I'd made sure to use my magic whenever he was around. I could tell he saw how disconcerted I was. "I saw you practicing your magic earlier today and then playing with the kids. I've never seen you so... Happy and free".

There was a brief silence between us until I broke it.

"That's because I've never truly felt like that, until I stopped hiding".

"I'm sorry for acting like that yesterday, I was a fool. And I think you look really cute like this".

"So you don't hate me?"

"How could I ever hate you? You're the most important thing in my life, (Y/N)".

I smiled at his words and turned my gaze to the water underneath us. I looked into his eyes again and we started getting closer and closer, but just when our lips where about to touch, I backed off.

"I'm sorry but I really need to ask you something. Why did you lie to the boys earlier, saying that King Harrow missed them?" he looked confused and a little bit scared.

"W-What to you mean?"

"There's no way you hadn't known that he was dead, you literally are a Crown Guard, Soren. So just tell me why you did it, please".

Again, there was silence, but this time it was tense and extremely awkward.

"I-I'm sorry but-"

"But what? You can't tell me? Why? Because it would ruin whatever plan your father has regarding the Princes?" I stopped to look at him but he was avoiding my eyes. "Because you don't want to admit that it was a strategy to be able to kill the boys a lot easier by making them trust you?" I said, remembering what Rayla had told me before about the zip line.

He just stood there, now a few feet apart from me and I could se how surprised he was, but I also could see something else, that I was right about my assumptions.

"You don't understand, (Y/N), I-"

"Oh, no, Soren. I think I understand really well".

As soon as I said that I left, going back to my room with tears running down my face, and ignoring Soren's voice calling for me. How could he even think about doing that? How would I tell the Princes? Would I even tell them at all or would I just try to keep them safe without destroying the image they had about his so-called friend? I had so many questions and not even one answer. I only knew that Rayla wasn't wrong at all.

how consistently ezran has the braincell it is truly astounding. compromising with rayla about the egg in 1x03? encouraging callum about harrow? everything with amaya at the lodge (i don’t think he was entirely right but he wasn’t entirely wrong either)? coming up with the plan to get rayla out safely bc “she’ll know what to do”? paying attention to the avalanche?? going after the egg?? getting them past the spiders?? king shit. we love to see it

the sheer nostalgia of it all, like, harrow is alive and viren isn’t just shady. callum has a crush on claudia and is just learning about magic. soren is soren. ethari is only in the end credits and rayla is learning how to make friends. like even at the end of s1 everyone has changed so much and then by the end of s2?? let alone s3?? like they’re all such completely different people in so many ways by the end of the second season, never mind the third, that it makes me feel like they’re such lil babies in the beginning of s1 even if by the end everyone’s just a month older. the fact that zym is an egg somehow throws me and i always forget that rayla only meets the boys in episode two

how much sadder harrow (and the royal family’s) situation is now that we know everything about sarai from 2x05-2x06 and the egg in 3x06. like callum saying “mum would be proud of us” already made me want to cry but after watching s2?? tear fest. fuck this show man

s1 rayllum is a hot mess and i love it so much. the “i want to trust you / be your friend so Badly but i’m not sure if i Should” hits different. we love bickering between teenagers. and knowing post s3 that they were falling for each other the whole time: transcendent. also they are?? so obsessed with each other?? callum just wants to ask her all the questions and know what she’s up to, and rayla cares about his opinion specifically way more than she has any right to. callum saying, to her face, that he forget the food they needed to survive because he was too distracted by her.

their interactions being infinitely funnier if you read them as rayla having a crush basically from the start and going “cute servant boy, oh no prince, okay maybe he gets to live but he’s annoying, and Very Noble omg and heartfelt - wait nvm he’s just annoying… he’s super endearing tho shit and urgh he doesn’t trust me” and then the second the trust obstacle is cleared rayla just goes “ah yes, cute boy i have a crush on, i Must annoy him” for the next three episodes (1x07-1x09). the cinema

Alright so in this post we've got Runaan getting turquoise burstline panels in Bloodmoon Huntress, whenever he focuses hard on something.

But he's not the only character in the graphic novel to get a color-coded burstline panel, and omg guys I gotta delay the coolest bit with a little setup here first, just bear with me:

IT'S WINGALING TIME

Listen, I love this lil gadgety winged mouse so much okay, it's adorable, but it's so much more precious than just a cute construct or a protective device.

Remember when Ethari said that Rayla could be family with him and Runaan, way back at the beginning of BH?

When he gives Rayla the wingaling and makes her feel welcome, he enchants the little construct with some pretty glowing gems. Those gems have three colors:

Turquoise on its wings - for Runaan

Purple on its horn - for Ethari

Gold in its eyes - for Rayla

Runaan's soul is literally turquoise

and when he gets his intense focus panels in BH, they come with turquoise backgrounds.

It's interesting that Ethari doesn't have any of these panels in the graphic novel, which is kind of a message in itself...

but Rayla does!

And look at its background color:

Gold, just like the eyes on her wingaling.

Rayla's focusing everything she's got in this panel, on thwarting Kim'dael by chucking that vial she wants so badly. It lends a lot of weight to Rayla being capable of the same dedication and self-sacrificial choices that Runaan has, since they both get these kinds of panels, but Ethari doesn't.

(She even gets a gray-coded panel when she slips into full Moonshadow form, because just like Runaan's gray panel, her focus is entirely on life and death right here)

Okay but: gold soul?? GOLD SOUL????

Do Moonshadow elves have different-colored souls? Does everyone?? What does this mean? And how can they tell? Do these elves just. See each other's soul color like an aura or something? Is this the real reason that Runaan and Ethari drink from mugs in each other's colors? Is this the real reason they have those mug colors in the first place?

I was not prepared for the idea of Rayla's soul being gold but

oh my god what an amazing idea, because

in TTM, Rayla's wearing gold pajamas. They could've been red, as the other main Katolian color, but they're gold.

What's Callum's color, then? Is it red, like his scarf, is it blue, like his jacket? Because now, they gotta swap, see. They gotta use each other's colors too.

Please consider the depth of intent behind the simple imagery of Callum drinking his coffee out of a golden mug.

hey! i hope you’re doing well, too! omg i’ve been thinking about this since I finished the new season! heres some cute stuff to go with a short chapter that I did! you can read the chapter under the cut :p (chapter includes spoilers to season 3!)

The top of the Storm Spire seemed to be the go-to spot for R & R & R (rest, relaxation, and romantic occasions) now, and Rayla smiled softly as she peered around her at the pink and orange sunset fading into a black night sky, sparkled with stars. She noticed behind her Amaya and Janai, both laughing as they conversed. In a moment, the two stood up and turned to Rayla. 

“It has been a long day, my child,” said Janai smoothly, her voice almost a whisper. 

She cocked her head to look over at Amaya, who nodded and offered her a kind smile. Janai smiled as well, and then in a moment raised her hands, attempting to sign as she spoke. “We are going to… turn in,” she said slowly, her eyebrows furrowed as she tried to make the hand signs for her spoken words. Amaya beamed proudly next to her. Janai sighed and shook her head, embarrassed at her work, but then she chuckled a bit. “I’m sorry. I’m working on it!” Amaya laughed now, too, holding a hand to her mouth.

“I suggest you two turn in soon as well. It will be a long day tomorrow as we try to figure out our next plans. But you deserve the rest regardless,” she paused, and then laughed once more. “You specifically, young lady. As it seems that the young prince has already started his rest,” she said, gesturing to a snoring Callum next to Rayla. He had fallen asleep almost an hour ago, slumped against Rayla, but she didn’t mind.

“Thank you, Janai,” Rayla said simply. Janai nodded, and took Amaya’s hand as they made their way down the steps toward the cave, where the rest of their friends had made camp. 

Before they were out of sight, Amaya turned back to Rayla and gave her a bright smile and a wave. On their way down, Rayla swore that she heard other voices, and her hunch was correct as in a moment Ezran appeared on the steps, followed by Soren.

“Hey guy—” Ezran started happily, but quickly noticing his sleeping brother he dropped his voice. “Hey Rayla,” he said quietly, a wide smile on his lips.

“Oh man,” Soren spoke softly, quietly chuckling at Callum. “He’s out like a light.”

“He’s been like this for almost an hour. It was too precious, I didn’t want to wake him.”

Soren smiled. “I should probably take him down to the camp,” he said. He approached Rayla and Callum, offering Rayla a pat on the shoulder and a small smile as he passed her, and then scooped Callum into his arms, holding him as he made his way back to the stairs to head back down the mountain path. “Just shout if you need anything, you two,” he said as he left.

“Thank you, Soren,” Rayla said, although he was probably too far away to hear her.

Ezran paced toward Rayla and plopped onto the ground next to her where Callum had been. Before Rayla could say anything, Ezran quickly turned to her and threw his arms around her shoulders, squeezing her tightly.

“I missed you so, so much, Rayla,” he said in a whisper.

A smile began to form on Rayla’s lips, and she thought she would laugh at the small boy’s kindness, but instead, in his arms she felt a pang of sadness, and began to tear up. “I missed you too, Ez. I missed you too.”

After a moment Ezran peeled himself from her and wiped at a tear on his cheek, still wearing a bright smile. 

“Do you want to see something cool?” Ezran asked his friend, standing up and offering a hand to her. She hesitated, but obliged, and stood up and followed him as he led her to the edge of the cliff top. 

“Promise me you won’t freak out?” Ezran asked her, looking up at her with bright eyes.

Rayla cocked an eyebrow. “Promise?” she said, not understanding what he meant. That is, until he lept off of the cliff. Which, obviously, didn’t stop her from freaking out.

“Ezran!” she screamed, covering her mouth as more tears quickly sprung to her eyes. She looked around her at the bright shining stars and huge glowing moon, and then closed her eyes, ran forward, and jumped herself.

What she didn’t expect was to land so quickly.

She peeled her eyes open, her body shaking with fear, and met Ezran’s eyes right in front of her. 

“Ez, what—” she began to ask, but she examined her surroundings and realized where they were. They weren’t on the ground. They weren’t on any ground, actually— but on a dragon.

“Oh,” she sighed loudly, exhaling relief with a small chuckle. “I’m sorry, I think I may have broken my promise there for a moment.”

Ezran laughed and nodded his head. “It’s okay. I’m still not completely used to it, either. He reached next to him, laying a hand on the dragon’s sparkling red scales, and closed his eyes. He was communicating with it. In a second, the dragon made a smooth circle back toward the mountaintop, and flew over it, its wings flapping evenly and strongly. 

“So,” Rayla said. “King Ezran the Dragon Tamer, huh? Has a nice ring to it.”

Ezran giggled, petting the dragon. “Yeah, I guess it does.”

They sat there for a silent moment, both taking in the dazzling view around them. Finally, when one of them spoke up, the other did, too, and they both stuttered and then laughed.

“You go first,” Ezran insisted.

“No, that’s alright, you go ahead,” Rayla argued.

Ezran smiled. “Fine. I was just going to say… I’m glad that you and Callum are together. That you found hope in each other, and that you’re finding your strength in each other. You are two of the most important people to me, you’re my family. And I’m glad that you’re happy together.”

Rayla blushed and smiled. “Thank you, Ezran. Really. I’m glad that we’re together, too. I wasn’t really sure how I felt, to be honest, about him, or about having any sort of relationship like ours. For a long time I thought that my parents had left me, that they had run away like cowards from the guard. And I guess...” Rayla sighed. “I guess I was afraid that I would run away, too. I was afraid that if I got too close to Callum, I would get scared and leave him just like my parents did. But then… he showed me the truth. He showed me that my parents hadn't abandoned the guard, that they had fought until the very end. And I know I will, too. I will fight evil, and fight for my family. For you, and for him.

Ezran smiled widely, reaching a hand out to mess with Rayla’s hair. “Seems like someone has become sappy since I’ve been gone,” he said with a smirk.

Rayla huffed. “Shut up,” she said, musing his hair back, and he giggled.

“That’s what I was going to talk to you about, actually,” she said. “About you being gone. Gosh, Ezran, you’ve grown and matured so much since you’ve been gone. You’re so strong. I just wanted to tell you how proud I am of you.”

Ezran waved a hand with a smile, dismissing the praise, “Thanks, Rayla. It’s not a big deal, though. I haven’t done that much—”

“You’re wrong,” Rayla interrupted. “Ez, it’s only been a few weeks, and since then you made it home and became the youngest king to rule. And whatever you did had to be right, because you got many of your people and the whole remaining population of the Sunfire Elves to follow you into battle. Not to mention that you gathered a whole army of dragons to help, too. You’ve changed everything, Ezran. For good. And that’s… that’s incredible.”

Ezran hadn't realized all of this, or hadn’t taken it to heart. He looked up at a smiling Rayla but couldn’t manage a smile himself, and instead began to cry.

“I just want to make my dad and Callum proud,” he said between sniffles, and Rayla quickly took him in her arms, running her fingers through his hair. 

“Ezran, you have made him proud. You have done so much good in so little time. Imagine how much you’ll do over the years? He’ll be the proudest father there can be, I’m sure. And… I know you didn’t know your mother. And I don’t know much about her, but I know that she too had a kind and beautiful soul, Ezran. I am sure that she would be proud of you, too.”

Ezran sniffled as he held onto Rayla. “I love you, Rayla.”

Rayla smiled, nuzzling into Ezran as the dragon circled once again back to the mountain, returning them to the rest of their people.

“I love you, too, Ez.”

No. I downloaded it on Netflix via public wifi in Scrovegni Chapel and then watched it in a bus filled with dozens of college kids who only know me as That Artschool Kid Who Keeps Raising Her Hand in Class so letting them know I marathon cartoons was not in my top priorities
