Lord Akeldama's Sitting Room, Nov. 15

“No, I’m sorry, that’s the most ridiculous thing that’s ever come out of your mouth, and that’s including the time you tried to tell me that Maccon was going to keep his shirt on at the last ball.” Lord Akeldama’s strident tones seemed to echo off the walls of his sitting room, his face a picture of frozen horror.

Professor Lyall raised a brow. “Telling you that my favorite color is orange is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever said?”

“A thousand percent. I’m more sure of that than I am that paisley cravats are going to be all the rage next season.”

“So serious business,” Lyall said, just managing to keep his face straight. “Go on then, why is orange as a favorite color so ridiculous?”

Lord Akeldama sniffed haughtily (he did everything haughtily), “Orange, you fuzzy menace, is the color of Autumn, and you are a Winter.”

Lyall sat back, unsure what to say to that. He prides himself on looking neat (not a hard ask in comparison to the rest of the pack, certainly), but he’s never claimed to be the most fashion-forward. Certainly nothing rivaling Akeldama or his drones. But as per usual when forced to interact with the intensely sartorial vampire, Lyall’s head was spinning.

“I’m afraid I don’t have any idea what on earth you’re talking about,” he admits eventually.

Akeldama’s eyes flash with something like triumph before launching into a monologue – something about his hair and complementary colors and really you should look into purchasing something from this decade – most of it goes over Lyall’s head. He would leave if it wasn’t the height of rudeness. He gathers his wits enough to clue in as Akeldama is winding down.

“...and really, do you want other people to think of a fruit when they see you?”

“Wouldn’t be the first time,” Lyall comments without any input from his brain. He can actually see something in Akeldama’s mind break as the words register, his face now frozen in astonishment.

Lyall barks out a laugh at the sight, and then he can’t stop.

“Professor Lyall, what in the world have you done to Lord Akeldama?” Alexia re-enters the sitting room adjusting the lay of her sleeves and hooking her parasol over a wrist. Finally, she’s ready to go.

“Oh nothing that a closer examination of his observations won’t fix,” Lyall says cheerfully. “Until next time Lord Akeldama, it’s always interesting.”
