I like forcing people to watch Generation Loss with me, but one problem they tend to have is that they don't have any background knowledge on the content creators involved (when I watched it I only knew about some of the content creators from the DSMP and in Sneeg's case, Origins SMP, and I still don't know much about a few of them. But I started talking about GL Nikki and how her being meant to represent Nikki's lived experience as a content creator online also probably unintentionally doubled as a commentary on how female characters are treated in media and by fandom spaces and it got me thinking:

Can the death of the author be applied to GenLoss? Not in a "I'm going to pretend Hatsune Miku wrote har/ry pot/ter" way to alleviate guilt (from what I've seen, Ranboo is a pretty based person) but in a, "can this piece of media be analyzed outside of the author's direct intent?" Way? Could someone who's never watched Ranboo enjoy Generation Loss as a story about someone named Ranboo and still get something out of it? What does the mask mean to someone who's never learned why the mask is significant to the content creator the character is based on? Can someone who's never heard of the bullshit Nikki was put through still get something interesting out of her character like with the aforementioned parallels I noticed with how female characters are perceived in general?

I feel like maybe you'd have to know a little bit about Ranboo's LGBTQ + identity to see them leaving out that Ranboo is Enby and Gay completely because he's the Main Character and that can't be outside of the cis/straight default! But that only really effects the character analysis of how GL Ranboo is treated and they would still probably be able to see the implicit homophobia in how Showfall treats gay men as jokes like with Sneeg relationship with Frank and Austin's whole, gay guy trying to pretend he's straight thing. But once it's revealed that the whole thing was a show and how Austin's "joke" status continues even when he's the only person who gives a damn about being murdered they might be able see that commentary.

I kind of want to make an assignment that's just, "watch Generation Loss and try to analyze it as deeply as you can without researching the people behind the project, and then tell me what you think it means." Because I'm so interested in what the answers would be.

ok my thought process was somewhere along the lines of

rboo (kid wanting to blow up as a mcyter during summer 2020) getting attention through making fan content of dream smp (also trying to write themself into the lore) -> dream (kid who blew up as an mcyter before the pandemic hit, getting even more insane numbers) sees himself in rboo, adds him to the dream smp

-> path 1: parasocial stan delusion - ran is both viewer and cc, relatable to viewers in a down to earth way while gaining an insane amount of success very very fast -> heightened scrutiny to not fuck things up because his audience is full of normal people who care about social justice on paper (part of dreams influence in having a gender and race diverse (somewhat) audience) -> growing importance of boundaries (tm) -> fandom becomes insanely blue haired liberal and jumps on every mistake, demanding quick and GOOD apologies for both inane and serious shit -> fandom becomes volatile and creates disproportionate responses to everything -> they (rboo) become spineless -> this attitude and spinelessness leaks over to the whole of mcyt since most of dsmp shared an audience at that point -> feedback loop we see today (sidebar: growing media illiteracy combined with volatile reactions extend to lore shit on all ends and was absolutely compounded by their joining -> "sanctity" of the lore -> michael -> dsmp audiences split over the parasocial belief that character = content creator's thoughts beliefs and actions in real life instead of. acting)

-> path 2: control and queerness - branch off from blue haired liberal -> viewers have good intentions in wanting more rep in the cc space (queer and women, not so much race) -> marginalized communities cant afford to make mistakes as much as white men in the space -> disproportionate amount of criticism for both white men and marginalized ccs -> viewers attempting to take control of ccs due to ran blurring the line between viewer and cc during lockdown/most viewers' formative social years being taken from them -> not much education about queerness in the first place -> queerbaiting discourse and queer being a symbol of goodness -> people seemed to want dream to be straight and evil and ran to be gay/queer and good -> double standards when dream and ran come out because of dream's perceived power, status, and past growing up in conservative florida he had already been addressing, but ran gets a warm welcome because of bending to the audience more than dream has and past not holding as many mistakes meaning they could claim queer as an identity -> selective biphobia because if dream is queer hes a bad queer so everything he does is evil

dteam mains are pretty vicious to ranboo and idk why. they often say he's turned being gay into his only personality trait which i think is really unfair to say. he's done nothing wrong as far as i'm aware, i don't understand the animosity towards him.

i do think its similar to why a lot of dream team mains hate/used to hate wilbur, and wilbur mains hate/used to hate dream, they're very similar and so fans have created an imaginary rivalry in their head where their fav creator has to be the very best

in this case ranboo had a better partial "face reveal" (if we ignore the fact that just like dream he had a horrible time on twitter last year with people being disgusting and violating his privacy) and coming out experience than dream, and he's also been in a lot less drama and isnt really hated by the mainstream public.

there's also the element of people feeling like ranboo doesnt give dream enough 'credit' for 'making' his career which is just silly

I believe part of Tommy's crisis is coming from a series of "failures" and feeling like he's lacking direction in his career. The daily vlog series didn't do as well as he had hoped, but I think his disappointment with the most recent merch drop is even more noticeable. Not only is he heavily marketing his merch (even his mother has retweeted his most recent merch plug), but he's grumbling about not making money from it on stream and just in general exhibiting an odd tension whenever he talks about it.

This is more speculative, but I also sense almost a bit of envy from him when he mentions his friends and their big projects. For example, him "jokingly" putting down Tubbo and the importance of his server and "jokingly" mentioning not being interested whenever Ranboo wanted to infodump about Generation Loss. It's almost as if he feels like he lacks his own big project and is subtly talking down on these projects to make him feel better (or even by making "having a girlfriend" sound like his next big content project/era, though that's a stretch). Obviously, joking about how much better he is than everyone and being "the main character" is a staple of Tommy's persona, but I think he's swinging more often between a sense of entitlement (making his friends come over and cook for him was definitely him egotripping) and self-deprecation.

I also notice that every other time he streams, even pre-dating the girlfriend reveal, Tommy acts as if we're entering into a new era of content, while most things seem to stay more or less the same. There's something about him constantly wanting to start over (there's a lot to unpack about his recent statement that his "gay era" is over, but to me the most striking thing was that he was basically asking to undo or move on from almost half a year of content for something presumably "new" in the so-called girlfriend era) that makes me think he's struggling to find his footing when it comes to content again.

I don't know if he's exhibiting textbook Type 6 disintegration signs right now, but I don't think he's doing great, at least not when it comes to content creation.

I had a lot of interesting conversations in DM’s around the vlog era because the mismatch of goals/expectations and outcome was very pronounced if you knew to keep an eye on it. It was clear from his fundraising goals and the pricing of the donation wall that he expected to be able to land way more big donors than he did, and if I’m not mistaken by the end, he started listing every name that donated, which if I recall weren’t that many considering the scale of the project.

Following the vlog series with Cheeto pants immediately was unfortunate. I think it was around the end of one of the finale lore streams that I realised he was a little desperate with the drop--  orange is a risky color, I would wager it’s those pieces that aren’t selling well. Semi-ethical merch is expensive and, not gonna lie, it’s a bit socially dicey to be flagging inniter in public. I understand why he leans kidcore for his branding, but it seems like the people who want it can’t afford it and the people who can afford it don’t want it.

I know it’s only been a week-ish since the GF reveal but if he really tries to wrap his go-to shtick around some dodgy girlfriend jokes we’re in for a rough time. He cracked off a few full-body cringers in the girlfriend stories stream and man if we aren’t back on track for the woman jokes. Except now they’ve got a target. Mmmmmmmm, hope that’s not permanent, since people have been developing a real disgust for that kind of humor for about a decade now and it’s not going away. Oh gayinnit, I will miss you.

He keeps talking about January, which I am curious about. Sometimes projects that youtubers hype up and want to be big actually don’t hit the way they’re supposed to, or at least it isn’t the guaranteed hit that they wanted it to be, but I want to keep my mind open for what’s coming since I genuinely can’t tell what it is.

I think if he was going to Three under stress this would be a lot messier and more reactive than it is. I think right now he’s relatively earnest despite being lost, and I’m sensing a lot of hope from him, which does imply that he's looking foward. If these next few months wind up being hard on him and nothing winds up working out, that might really freak him out, but he’s still a long ways off from objectively bombing so we’ll see.

so we obviously all know ranboo has very homophobic parents, that christian school did not do him very good either, and now that we know for sure that hes apart of the LGBTQ community we can kind of gauge what his mindset would be if he was in a relationship with another guy for the first time (especially in the public limelight without being out yet.) 

obviously he would not want to tell anyone about his relationship because then people would know that he’s gay, so obviously if he was in a relationship with tubbo he wouldn’t want people to know and that would mean both of them having to keep quiet about their sexualities and not correcting people if they were to be mistaken as best friends instead of a couple. i like to think of this as the Dan and Phil effect. basically when dan came out it was almost immediately accepted that then phil would also be gay as well and vice versa which is why I think phil (even though he was pretty much OK with his sexuality back then) didn’t come out because that would then indirectly out dan as well and i think this is the mentality that ranboo had with his relationship with tubbo . that oh if one gay man is hanging out with another man a lot and seem to have this very close relationship .. well oh no BOTH of them are gay.

clearly tubbo doesn’t like things about him on the internet that aren’t real which is why he felt to make that little twitch stream about why he’s not unlabeled and i think if he was in a relationship and had to constantly put up with being called his boyfriend’s “best friend” instead of boyfriend it would bother him as well, but since ranboo was still in the closet, obviously, they couldn’t talk about that and you know it seems like a very complicated situation. there’s one person who wants to be true to themselves and not have to put up with lies about themselves on the Internet and there’s another person who just in the closet (and clearly tubbo was fine with being out of the closet, im pretty sure the gay pride flag was in his buo before he even started getting close with ranboo right? I can’t remember but he had it in his bio for a long time)

essentially i think it just bothered tubbo to have to be in a relationship in which his partner was totally OK with them being mistaken for best friends and obviously it did help both of their careers i mean… How many beeduo likers were also secretly on eb at the same time like… and i think this bothered tubbo and which is why he eventually ended up breaking up with ranboo and not wanting to speak with him anymore… this is just a small part of the puzzle, there are a lot of things about ranboo that are very slimy as well but they don’t factor into my main theory about why they broke up and why they aren’t talking anymore

Wilbur Soot is a disgraced former FBI agent who was, for a long time, FBI's golden boy: he started young and was very talented as a criminal profiler, being the definitive piece to solving many big, complex cases that got tons of media attention–which might have been a bad thing if he wasn't also an incredible public speaker–, quickly becoming both head of his own team and a well-known public figure, all the while having a lovely wife and kid.

That was, until about four years ago, before… The Incident. It's hard to say what exactly happened but what just about any person that keeps up with the news knows is that, seemingly overnight, Wilbur Soot: 1) lost his mind and tried to blow up a building 2) was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and was only sentenced to a year in a mental health facility (...to the disapproval of a lot of the public).

He now teaches criminology to FBI trainees and aside from his job lives completely removed from the rest of the world, meaning both the eye of the public and the attempts at connection from his family and friends.

Wilbur is not allowed to go back to the field, not does he particularly wants to (it's hard to say what exactly he wants) but that doesn't stop the head of the FBI, known as The Warden, from–amid an unsolvable and urgent case–pushing him back into it anyways, despite strong protests from Wilbur's colleague and former best friend Doctor Niki Nihachu, who fears both for others safety and for Wilbur's sanity.

So, as a means of tracking Wilbur's mental health and making sure going back to work won't break him, The Warden orders him to start therapy with Doctor Alexis Quackity Schlatt, renowned psychiatrist, talented gastronomer and widow to infamous gay Republican Senator J. Schlatt. 

Quackity is intelligent, cultured, and seems to understand Wilbur better than anyone can, and throughout the session Wilbur and Quackity develop a deep and complex relationship, while Wilbur has to navigate being a criminal profiler again, but he will come to learn that Quackity might have a bigger connection to his work on the FBI than he innitially thought…

ok lmao i have no idea how good of an introduction to this topic this is but i really just wanted to get out there the basic premise and all that we initially know about Wilbur's character. the core of this story is really a character study of Wilbur as well as the development of this… very Interesting relationship. and you bet your ass their gonna get psychocompetitive up in here.

so, like, the crack idea (LOSAR’s version) is the idea that all the SMP roleplay servers are linked in a multiverse, though quite loosely.  And also wrapped into my thoughts or ideas are some vague stuff about admin powers and mod powers and viewers - (and watcher / listener lore from Evo and 3rd Life being loosely tied to that)

so the main crack idea that’s kinda grown into this emotional thing, at least for me, (and it is Crack), is the whole joke bit video where Grian and Tommyinnit meet up, aka “I Tried to get Grian to Swear”, also known as “the one where they have a building competition” and also get weirdly posessively desirous about Mumbo Jumbo....

Anyway, the idea i had is it actually seems to fit well with other stuff with their HC and Dream SMP roleplay characters, and like they actually play off eachother surprisingly well there.  And it’s a chance for both groups to see how “the other half” lives. and they have fun.

So the background of these people is that, oh boy, Tl:dr the relevant parts here is that HermitCraft SMP where Grian usually plays is.... you could call it upbeat, cheerful, and pranksterish but friendly, but not romantic at all.  Pretty much anything of that aspect has to be Teen rating.  And that includes explicit “straight” stuff too, btw. it’s like a friend molecule.  Whereas the Dream SMP, where Tommy’s from, does have that aspect, many gay, straight, poly, marriages. and a lot of passion and genuine caring.  also to put what you heard about bluntly, it may not be the worst.... Dream SMP is a hellhole.  This is just to set the scene if you know nothing.

So anyway, (in the joke video i referenced, and in my story) this is a time when the two groups meet.   And see how they live, and swap stories, and yes build a pair of cottagecore cottages for winner’s clout.

And (in my story at least)  they see things in eachother.  Grian sees how scarred Tommy is (and how annoying and weird to be around) but also how *passionate* and willing to express how he feels about Grian and Mumbo Jumbo, even if it’s in a little bit of a yandere stan way lol.  (understatement)

While Tommy sees in Grian and Mumbo.... one: how absolutely power hungry they are.  Like they really like to influence things, really.  and that they are inhuman.  And well... on the Dream SMP, neither fares very well really.  If you’re power hungry (like Dream) you become everyone’s enemy.  and there’s so many inhumans/part humans on the DSMP, but g d do they go through some hard times because of it, and can’t even talk to it with anyone. Ranboo is part enderman and has to deal with Follish killing other endermen in front of him and rain and snow burning hi,m.  Philza is winged, but has his ability to fly stripped due to injury almost immediately upon joining the server.  And yet - to Tommyinnit’s wise eyes - Mumbo and Grian are liked and respected on HermitCraft. wtf.

And ofc, the contest ends with Grian winning and taking Tommy’s prized elytra (a pair of minecraft wings) as a prize (this will be important later)

So just like Dream XD is Dream in admin form - a God in the minecraft world.... the two go off into Admin Mode (which side note, in my story is Watcher Mode for Grian)

And they go talk to Mumza.

And For the Third Life/Last Life/Double Life series - Grian institutes a loooot more passion.  and also a LIMITED CANONICAL LIFE SYSTEM like they have in THE DREAM SMP.  And finally gets a chance to cling to Scar and Mumbo (but at what cost? “I don’t feel too good about this”)

And for the ORIGINS SMP - Admin Tommyinnit, Tommy XD, institutes unlimited lives, sure, that dcan’t be understated, but also (maybe more importantly) free use of powers or abilities. yes! Elytras, shulkers, ender pearls, teleportation.  Just like on HermitCraft.  and also * the ability to talk about all this stuff *

(notice any patterns on what species people chose on origins? Tubbo starts as the most highly armed and armored species in the game, Phil has elytra wings, Ranboo is an enderman, Will a ghost, Niki was surrounded by fire, now she’s surrounded by water, Jack had to claw his way out of hell after dying in one of Tommy’s stupid wars on the DSMP and always resented him for it, now he starts in hell on the O SMP and has Tommy come to see him and help him get back.)

Anyway, and Tommy is an Avia, who doesn’t have full elytra and can’t fly but has (cute little) vestigial wings.

And who’s favorite jokingly annoyed phrase is “Phiiiil, i wanna fly like you phil!”

And Tommy’s also said that unlike the Dream SMP the disc thing doesn’t apply here.

On Dream SMP, Tommy gives his music discs away to Dream ( XD ) for everyone’s freedom.  and constantly wants them back.

On ORIGINS SMP, planeswalker Admin Tommyinnit XD Gives his elytra to Grian (Watcher) for the ideas of the Origins SMP.  And is like “I wanna fly like you Phil.”

(because if you notice, i think part of the “Tommy” personality in any universe, besides being selfish, and talking about girls, and talking shit to ppl, is being willing to give up things he cares about for his friends ).... (and oh boy, grian will take anything, anything that isn’t nailed down. )

But deep down I think he’s a little “happy” with both cases.

and i know this is a different multiverse thing. And i just like multiverses and planeswalkers in general.

But this is part of why i’m emotional about it, if i am.

Nah yall the joke maxggs made was after ranboos coming out. He responded to his tweet with some kind of gay joke and people got mad so he had to post a tweet clarifying that he is also queer. Which was not really news to people who watch him bc he's been fairly open about without being explicit. Much like tubbo actually.

He then made a second joke on his private account saying something along the lines of 'just lied on main for likes' which was intended to be a joke for his core audience who already know he isnt straight but unfortunately got out to the wider twitter sphere. He probably should've seen that coming tbh but I dont blame him for indulging in a gay joke or two.

Another Cough Syrup Tuesday comes and goes, once again leaving Galaxy in shambles... It is once again essay time, and I can't wait to share my thoughts on this lovely chapter! :D

I shall begin my ramblings with the loveable cs!Tubbo (Someone please give him a therapist holy shit) His characterization in this chapter didn't disappoint, and he continues to be such a complex character with such an interesting perspective! This chapter started with Tubbo (once again) being upset that he has feelings. My mans is pissed that he feels pissed and it's great! (not for him) His constant need to be "the put together one" is really starting to boil over and implode on itself. The rampant repression has to end one way or another, and that's either by snapping from the building of tension or by Tubbo finally having an open and honest discussion with someone in regards to everything. And judging by this chapter, I have a feeling it might be the former. Now of course Tubbo's lack of a healthy mental state comes from multiple sources, and one of which made me very angry in this chapter. that being, Tubbo's repeated victim-blaming towards himself. "Dream is different from Schlatt" Yes they are Tubbo, but they BOTH ABUSED SOMEONE. You are allowed to think of Schlatt's actions as abusive because they were, and even though he isn't some evil black & white monster, that doesn't it wasn't abuse. Just because "Others have it worse" doesn't mean you didn't suffer. Regardless of what trauma goes through, someone else will always have it worse, but that in no way means that someone is unjustified for feeling the effects of abuse and trauma. Sorry mare, I just had to rant to cs!Tubbo about this because I wanted to shake him by the shoulders the whole time, you've really done a great job writing the effects Tubbo's abuse, and because of this, I think I might be a cs!Tubbo kinnie because the internal conflict he's having with himself over this is so familiar to me and it's good to see this side of it presented so well! And what would a cs!Tubbo section be without talking about his self-hatred?! :D All the repeated phrases of Tubbo being "Not important" or being comforted more than he deserved. Tubbo sees himself as nothing, worth nobody's energy or time, and it's SO concerning. And it always comes in as an afterthought for him, he'll think about people that matter to him, and without even thinking he'll add on something about how he doesn't matter, like it's just a given. The way you write Tubbo's internal thoughts always blows me away both with how depressing it is and with how well you can subtly present a character's issues to the point they become visible after seeing all the layers of small moments stack together.My favorite scene in the portrayal of cs!Tubbo's mass amount of problems was definitely the "Tubbo's Angry" section in the shopping portion. I've always loved the use of repetition in an extreme emotional context, and the way this part just builds and builds rage, it feels just like wanting to snap. And of course, what I say to most of Tubbo's "unnational" anger, is- YOU HAVE DEPRESSION YOU IDIOT OMFG!!! So it's safe to say that you've once again nailed cs!Tubbo this update :)

Next, I will continue my in-depth discussion with the relationship dynamic of cs!beeduo in an orderly manner- FINALLY TUBBO FINALLY ONE OF YOU REALIZES IT ISN'T PLATONIC ANYMORE FINALLY TUBBO YOUR DUMB GAY ASS REALIZED- ahem- I was very thrilled when I read Tubbo's realization to say the least... But I do actually have some analysis things to say about the presence of beeduo in this chapter (Which finally btw, the last chapter was so sad) The beginning of the chapter started with Tubbo talking about how he's been feeling like crap, and why? Mostly because Ranboo had been ignoring him. That being the main reason Tubbo's so upset is just so sad to me. He matters so much to him- to each other, and yet neither of them realizes how much the other thinks of them. It's so frustrating to know what's going on on both sides because we know how much the absence is affecting both of them, and at the same time know why Ranboo's avoiding him which is super concerning! And then of course Tubbo literally doesn't even think he deserves how much Ranboo cares about him ("More times than he should have") It all adds up to a horribly tragic soup that still tastes good because angst is fantastic! And of course, we have the phone call, which starts out so lovely. They're flirting again without calling it flirting and being dorks and great and they're happy- WRONG! The phone call takes such a horrible turn, and you're so good at conveying emotions through your writing because it felt so uncomfortable when Ranboo starts "talking to Niki. It's nerve-racking that he so desperately feels the need to hide Tubbo from which was most likely Dream that he instantly pretends to talk to someone else. And then the fact that it's from Tubbo's pov and you can feel how terrified he is for Ranboo, he keeps doubting himself on the nature of the situation and if it was Dream or not, and it also makes the reader uncertain in what we first think. It's just all so wonderfully unsettling, and I can't wait to see cs!beeduo fall apart more on the 28th where nothing goes wrong and they hang out with nothing bad happening once so ever!

Now, the scene with Wilbur and Tubbo was just wonderful. Oh to have Tubbo's denial of family complex FINALLY be called out by someone else. So satisfying, but also stressful. Cs!Wilbur has always been slightly intimidating from Tubbo's pov, because there was always a level of awareness that he knew about a lot of what Tubbo kept trying to hide. And this scene feels like being cornered. But you also made it clear that Wilbur is lashing out, making Tubbo confront his problem and acknowledge it, that he's trying to prevent what happened with himself and the part of himself he sees in Tubbo before it's too late. The way the conversation just ends so quickly into complete silence is so jarring, and everything leads to the thought that Wilbur knows way more than he lets on.

Surprisingly, I think I'm also a cs!Jack kinnie now because of the last big scene of this chapter. Why? Good question! This whole scene came out amazing for so many different reasons. For one I can tell just how much effort you put into that resident evil argument because it was genuinely very funny, but the real wonder in this scene was Jack's emotional breakdown. His feeling came across so clear, and realistic. I've been where Jack is and he just sums up everything so well, he's struggling to even get through the day, he doesn't even have a support system and you can see the desperation, I could almost hear it while reading. And I won't lie, this marks the second time you've made me cry mare, you just write so good! Emotional breakdowns of fictional characters are simply your bread and butter! And how could I talk about this scene without mentioning that cs!Tuboo's sexual awakening was fucking Luigi?! Absolutely brilliant! (/hj) But seriously that actually explains why he was so drawn to Ranboo... Tall? Check. Nervous all the time? Check. Wears gloves? Check! Regardless, great work with making Jack such a layered character when I initially only thought of him as a crypto bro!

Finally, I want to bring attention to two more things. For one, the way you chose to write the holidays for cough syrup actually really resonated with me :D I grew up with a catholic mom who hatted the catholic church for several reasons, so we never celebrated the religious parts of christian holidays. Like I didn't even know what christmas was even actually for until I was like 12, so the little non-explicitly religious celebration sbi's got going was really nice! The other thing is the ending of the chapter... It was so good, and gives both the feeling of "OH FUCK, HERE IT COMES!!!" and "Thank God" at the same time! So now I'm really excited for chapter 28!!

This chapter was fantastic! You get me to feel so many things that I can barely limit myself when I type these things! (Funny story, my backspace key would not work when I tried writing this ask on Tumblr. It was only not working on the ask box which was just so ridiculous! So I had to type this out on google docs first and copy-paste it) I can't wait to see how cs!Ranboo implodes next chapter! You write so so well mare, you write emotions so raw and messy, and it's so much nicer to have something like this to read than some shallow orderly story of healing. Your writing feels so human, and I smile every day thinking about how lucky I was to find this fic :]

cs!Tubbo's repression grows stronger by the second! I'm really glad you liked that section because I'm fond of it too; we see a lot of Tubbo's passive rejection of any notion that he's important or able to be saved a lot in the earlier chapters, but i wanted to really show him start to cave into this building resentment that yes we do see earlier on, but we are only just now in this chapter seeing as a whole. he's been angry about these things all this time, but only now is it starting to build up to be so much that he has this uncontrolled rage period, one that dissipates eventually but still is a marker for what's to come.

Tubbo, too, is so unwilling to put schlatt and dream on any kind of equal level because all he's shown to know about Dream has BEEN what he did to Tommy, but he knew Schlatt ever since both are younger, and there's obviously so much more pressure and context there that makes it that much harder to accept that you've been abused. sorry about the cs!Tubbo kinning btw join the crew <3

YESSS I LOVED THE FUCKING PHONE CALL SCENE!!! that was not even in my PLANS for this chapter but i felt bad depriving you guys of them for so long, and i also really wanted to build up more of ranboo's whole thing with dream, and how it's coming across to tubbo. At this point in the story it is damn near impossible for either of these two to look at the other and go Ah yes I have platonic feelings for you, even as they still waffle back and forth about how they feel. I was most worried in this chapter about pulling off the whole jarring shift in the phone call bc I wanted it to take the readers off guard and also show Tubbo this really terrifying reality: This is still someone that he cares about and loves talking to, but even still there is this looming threat behind it all. It's not as straightforward as the two of them happily talking, or Dream picking up the phone-- it's a mix of the good and the bad to show Tubbo that they aren't in the clear yet, and he's still committed to figuring Dream out so that he can keep Tommy AND Ranboo safe, but it's getting harder because Ranboo's getting smarter and Tubbo's getting tired.

I fucking love Wilbur and Tubbo's dynamic because as you pointed out really articulately Wilbur is kind of a secondary threat to Tubbo for a lot of reasons. I also try to make Wilbur kind of a mystery, as there are a lot of moments that imply subtle tension or conversations happening between Wilbur and Techno, and Wilbur's whole past is a thing. The two are meant to parallel each other, but in a way that neither of them want-- Wilbur doesn't want Tubbo to be stuck in the aftermath of something larger than himself, but Tubbo already knows that the same thing that happened to Wilbur is happening to him

I LOVE writing emotional breakdowns, hurt/slight comfort used to be my SHIT in my older fandom downs; now I've gotten all soft /hj but I still love love love love LOVE writing it. It's so fucking fascinating. But that aside, GOD I put my heart and soul into fucking Resident Evil V research, and I'm also so so so glad people like where I'm taking Jack's character! I started him off as very 2 dimensional in this fic, but I'm trying to add more depth to him and show more about the world around Tubbo and everything. Fun fact: this scene was actually going to be a scene between RANBOO and Jack when I initially started this story, but it ended up working out wayyyy better this way

In regards to a certain aspect of 2021 mcyt- beeduo marriage

i remember there was a lot of discourse at one point with the beeduo marriage, with people changing its status from platonic to romantic to ??? and back multiple times throughout a day, eventually getting the page locked for a bit. The main driving factor behind the discourse was the initial ambiguity that neither tubbo or ranboo specified, leading to a division. There were a lot of plantonic marriage folks that felt uncomfortable shipping the characters since they were worried they were crossing their boundaries (though some were excessive in their policing, sometimes harassing those that shipped it and saying that they couldnt do that). However, there were also a lot of people that were aspec that saw the relationship as queerplatonic, finding in the characters representation that is extremely rare. That fact that the marriage happened during aro awareness week was a plus, too. Meanwhile, those that said it was romantic were very fully for it and some would harass the folks that said it was platonic or queerplatonic, calling them homophobic, saying they were sexualizing gay relationships, or (the specific comment that still sticks with me today) calling us cowards. It was a really awful time and what eventually caused me to stop being involved in mcyt other than techno, since i didnt want to interact with people that had been so awful that were also validated by the creators agreeing with their conclusion and saying that theyll lean more into the romance

this is a pretty comprehensive account, and it absolutely checks out from what i heard back then! thank you for this, from what i remember (from the outside looking in) it was a very intense and heated conversation that ultimately boiled down to, as you said, two main disagreements:

"queerplatonic" vs "romantic", the differing opinions on the romantic status of the characters

2. "character fiction" vs "real person fiction", the differing opinions on whether shipping the characters was the same as shipping the creators (this was often messier, because it was an offshoot of the looming Boundaries Discourse that casts a shadow over the entirety of early MCYTblr)

What’s the deal with Tommy and his girlfriend? Straightbaiting or true love?

Despite knowing next to nothing on Tommy’s girlfriend, we’ve come together as a group to ask one simple question: is knowing of her presence a good or bad thing? Critblr consensus is this reveal was a BAD IDEA.

While we can’t be sure when Tommy began to date his girlfriend, the general idea is it must’ve been around August-October. Tommy’s tweet on Oct. 12th was most likely about people coming up to him while he was out with her, which makes him revealing her in November even stranger. Even if they’ve known each other for a better part of the year—it’s still only been months, and he’s put her on blast to his main channel viewers. Hell, Tubbo’s boyfriends name has never even officially been “revealed” and they have been dating for a year.

So why does Tommy reveal to millions he’s dating someone after months of knowing her and everyone telling him not to?

My personal theory is he’s in his honeymoon phase; full of love and wanting to scream it from the rooftops because he’s an excitable person. But, his impulsivity clouded his thinking here, paired with his content-driven brain, it’s almost like he sees his girlfriend as a character in the TommyInnit show. I certainly don’t believe Tommy is like that 100% of his time—clearly not, she’s close enough to him to hang out with his friends one on one—but he’s always had a problem of seeing people in his life as Characters when a camera is rolling: Wilbur, the brother. Tubbo, the sidekick. Ranboo, the love interest. Phil, the dad. And now… his girlfriend—it’s content. It’s always content. What’s most interesting about the reveal is he admits he stretched the truth in his “story” of how he met her, which shows he at least is somewhat conscious of how he treated the situation and I’m glad that video was never released. The reveal video still pisses me off, though. What good came of making such a big deal about this situation? A few laughs on a stream? The newest bit to the TommyInnit show? Tommy admits himself people told him not to do this and he did it anyway. Here is a girl whom doesn’t want to be seen in any content, something Tommy has reiterated, and yet he uses her as content. I can’t be 100% sure about their relationship as I am some bitch on tumblr, but if I was in that situation I’d feel at least… uncomfortable. Looking at the way Tubbo treats his boyfriend, a non streamer, it’s wildly different to how Tommy treats his girlfriend. When the camera is rolling she’s not a person to him—she’s just content.

Theory 2: he revealed his girlfriend to “jump ahead of the situation.” This one is far fetched, but almost believable. It’s far fetched, because literally no one had any idea about her. So what exactly is he “jumping ahead” of? Fans coming up to him in public like “TOMMYINNIT IS THAT YOUR GIRLFRIEND?!?” very few people are that rude. It wasn’t an immediate need, he clearly spent a long time making the dreaded “first kiss” video that has luckily since been scrapped, so this is very far fetched. But still possible. He said he wanted “to be honest” with fans, but that is a complete and utter lie. Tommy lies all the time, and he continues to lie and stretch the truth. He admitted to lying in his scrapped video!!! Why did he say that?!

Theory 3: Straightbating. Tommy began to grow weary of being a very strange bisexual man off addaerall and wished to prove he was straight. I do believe he likes his girlfriend, and do we really need to go over it? You are not normal. I hope ur girlfriend is a fujoshi bc ur behavior towards Ranboo and Tubbo is CAPITAL W W-E-I-R-D! You know that tiktok that’s like “why do guys as so gay around the dudes?” and a guy stitched it with “what you need to be asking is why do guy act so straight around the girls?” that’s their relationship. What’s to even say?

Conclusión: The year is young, many thing happen in a year, true love can be found, people can move away, find new friends… it’s all about where time will take you. But… what’s most shocking to me about the girlfriend reveal is that no matter where in the timeline you place the point where they started dating… it’s still no time at all. It’s an impulsive decision. Let’s say something beautiful and true. Maybe their love will last an eternity and they are so happy together and Tommy loves her so much he wants to scream it from the roof tops! They will stay together happily! ^_^ yayyyyy!!!! ^-^ Now, let’s say something wicked and ironic. The case of matter is: relationships when you’re 18 don’t always work out. Sometimes they do, but it’s rare. It takes maturity and certain circumstances… and sometimes you still have growing to do and you may not be able to do that with your partner. It’s tragic, that’s the beauty of life and love. People come and go from your life—but when you’re a celebrity with millions of eyes on you, those relationships become apart of history. If Tommy’s current behavior is any clue, I don’t imagine things always being greener on the other side of the camera. If the way he treats his girlfriend right now continues, or even worsens, I don’t see such a private person being cool with it. If they breakup Tommy’s past content suddenly becomes very awkward. His girlfriend is clearly has befriended many of Tommy’s friends, which would make the situation all the more awkward. If they breakup will it be heinous and awful? Or quick and amicable? Will she still hangout with people like Ranboo and Beky? Will Tommy be cool with that? Who knows, these are all questions that influence a relationship or someone who may not be completely happy in a relationship.

All in all, Tommy’s decision to reveal his girlfriend the way he did was a BAD IDEA. Not only does it make fans see her as a Character in the TommyInnit show, but it makes Tommy see her that way too. Which is like… not cool! Take a page out of Tubbo’s book! She’s a person, Tom! She’s not a stinger on a stream, and with his current persona, no matter how he tries to weave her in, it all comes off as exploitation. I hope they’re both having a wonderful day right now, though!
