I went to the Ralph Carney memorial at Roulette last night. And Holy shit! Black Francis, Tony Maimone and Reid Paley did Wave of Mutilation! Marc Ribot and Steve Bernstein also played. Thinking of my dear friend today - The Great Ralph Carney - I met Ralph a few years ago when I was recording my second album in Portland, Oregon. He has just moved there from San Francisco and was new in town. I reached out to him and he very generously agreed to join us in the studio. I was a huge fan of his work - especially on Tom Waits “Rain Dogs” and “Big Time” records which I had on cassette tape back in the day. Meeting him and spending 5-6 hours in the studio was a huge thrill for me. We instantly hit it off and continued to work together on my next three albums. Ralph was my secret weapon who always elevated any track he played on. We became friends and spoke often - He would send me all kinds of jokes, funny memes and music that he felt was critical to know about. He would always give me so much encouragement and advice whenever I was feeling low about my musical efforts. I really miss Him. I wanted to record a tribute to my dear friend - it’s on my latest record ”Icaro Nouveau “ - This ones called “Ode to Ralph Carney” - Here a little clip - Special thanks and love to @stefanzeniuk who wrote/played all the saxophones on this track.
