I hate race washing
Its pointless and serves no value
We do not need to see characters with our skin color to relate to them. I like fluttershy and relate to her but I'm not a pink haired pony.
It is not "representation" and I hate how normalized it is or how if you say anything negative about you're immediately called racist.
representation is important! But not when it's recycled and only made for rage baiting or forced representation
I always hear "Well black people don't get representation" and honestly, its not an excuse to mindless just change the race of a character, especially already established ones.
Ofc theres exceptions like Miled morales, but with him he isnt just an established character turned black but has his own backstory, family, and earth. He isnt just "Peter parker turned black" But his own separate character (and not really a racewashed character but it's an example)
Truly many other black folk think the same as me, but are too afraid to say anything due to backlash but I want to make it known it is not as well accepted or appreciated as people think it is...
I know I will get attacked for my "controversial"opinion but hopefully some people would understand.
Ask yourself, Is black people just representation to you?  Is that all we are?

does anyone else get pissed when you're arguing with people and THEY IGNORE OR TWIST YOUR POINT.
Every.
Single.
Fucking.
Time.
Me: "Yeah pedos (and other gross people) are everywhere, I hate it too, but it's true"
Some dickwad: "Why are you justifying pedophilia?"
Me: "I think it's okay to give characters with no canonical skin tone whatever skin tone you like, but this person is fucking insane." (In reference to someone blackwashing a character that was already a FUCKING person of colour and invalidating their race and experiences)
Some dumbass: "So [character] doesn't have a race? Why would you say that? They're canonically Asian. [more stuff ignoring my point entirely]" This person would NOT let go of the idea I was trying to validate racewashing, and when I told them to actually read what I said. They didn't apologize. They just deleted what they'd said.
Me: "You said death threats aren't too far. How aren't they too far?" (I can provide screenshots for this one since it's recent)
Some asshole: "I mean, you have to expect them if you're acting different."
There is so much wrong with that. First, I had to ask THREE times how death threats are justifiable, and that was the bullshit they replied with. Second, we shouldn't have to deal with threats on our lives because we're 'weird'. Ooooo I wore a funny mask I'm evillll! They even worded it in a way that was defending death threats, IMO.
I swear to whatever diety is out there next time people blatantly ignore important parts of my argument I am going to be relentless. This is bullshit.
When I'm wrong or miss something in an argument, I apologize. I fucking show decency. Nobody else seems to and I'm fucking done with it.

In response to how Hollywood race-bent April O’Neal... Take a good look at Dr. Baxter Stockman, who is an ORIGINAL CANONICALLY black character in the TMNT lore...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Baxter is a deep, fleshed out, relatable and iconic character not just in TMNT lore, but in general. If you want TMNT to have a black character, your wish was granted before you even thought of it. He’s right there! Heck, you could even reimagined him to have a redemption arc! I mean, why not?
And this, friends, is why race or “any” bending bugs me. It’s because great characters of the group you mean to represent get forgotten in favour of riding on the tail of success of established white Christian straight (usually) male ones.
I say, nuts to that. Baxter is not only a worthy enough black character. He’s a worthy character PERIOD. And so are the others.
Say NO to bending and YES to showcasing the existing.
Say NO to race bending April. Say YES to including “Badass” Stockman.
Say NO to any-bending. Say YES to giving the existing minority characters the spotlight at long last. They waited long enough.
PS: I am well aware of the debate over April having been originally conceptualized to be black. As someone who was there when she first came out, let me put the rumour to rest please... That fact is only semi-right. April O’Neal was named after one of the creator’s then beloved who was partially black, but her race was originally up in the air and leaned more towards being Japanese. She was like what Mr. Smithers in the Simpsons was when it first started; a character that was still in the process of being built. In other words, the original concept of April was... everything and nothing. However, once the creators figured her out, the definitive version of her is white with red hair. And as for that hairdo she originally had when she was still in the works...
Tumblr media
It was the 80s. Back in the day, ALL women did their hair like that. Even my mom, who is white, did her hair like that. It was the style. I hope this clears things up.
PS part 2: Because it was brought up, I am well aware that Rise did the race swap first and had the audacity to include Baxter yet dumb him down. However, Rise in my opinion was not a good show and wrote everyone badly and offensively. Also, it was short lived for being so foolish. Me putting my foot down now is because this is a huge “strike three and now, you’re out”. Mutant Mayhem has the potential to be good, but it has specific glaring problems. Rise was an idea that just didn’t pan out. It was not worth taking offense over because it disrespected every character equally. April’s race swap there was just one of many. In way, that was Rise’s objective. To be silly, but it took it too far to the point where the show wasn’t even offensive. Just childish. I get that I don’t speak for everyone, but that was how I interpreted Rise. It was a parody that came and went.

For this addition to my New Classic Challenge, I go with an Indian Princess from the story, The Ivory City And Its Fairy Princess. Crazy stuff happens in this one & I'll try to sum it up:
One day a Prince REALLY screws up. He was practicing archery & unknowingly hit someone. That was reported to the king, all the boys & men were ordered to go by the house of the woman that was hit so she can ID the person that did it.
The prince & his best friend were going by to see what's happening & the woman recognized the prince. The King, his own father, was going to sentence him to execution, but the Vizier convinced the king to just exile him.
He was sent out the kingdom, with riches, but his best friend, the Vizier's son, came along. Theyre practically brothers, he got his back & in this story, he is the man with the plan.
They bumped into a family of robbers, escaped, but the riches remained. The prince later first sees the princess, he falls in love & the Vizier's son has a plan for them to meet again.
The plan works, the prince & the princess, Gulizar, arent married yet. Things are going great, but Gulizar starts to worry too much, thought the Vizier's son would get in the way, so....she tried to get him poisoned(hence why I dont have her similing. She doesn't have perfect record like the usual princesses).
The Vizier's son noticed some food was poisoned, and when he & prince realized the princess did that, the Vizier's son STILL has the prince's back. So he comes up with a plan to teach the princess a lesson. It worked, Gulizar sees that he's a friend. The son then comes up with a plan for them to get married, that works. They're welcomed back to their kingdom, but they went back the robbers' house prior, got their riches back & burned the place down.
I guess the moral of this story is dont judge a book by its cover. And the Vizier's Son is not only the perfect planner, he's the perfect wingman.

wyll ravengard fans (me) seeing yet another case of larian ignoring our darling boy because larian is run by racist ass europeans "he's not as popular as the other origin characters" which definitely has nothing to do with the fact that larian've been shafting him since day 1, including but not limited to: changing his entire storyline, changing his VA, immediately fantasy racewashing him 10 minutes after we meet him, making his entire new plotline about being the contractual property of a blatantly white coded character (i could go on but we'd be here all day)...
Tumblr media
anyways. fuck you larian. give my boy the justice he deserves

I agree with 4119 for the most part
But the thing with race is that it is almost always done with the intent of erasure or "fixing"
It's never "I wanted to explore this character as if they had a different ethnic background in this setting"
It's always "this character would look BETTER with this specific skin color and that's all I'll add to them and ignore all other culture aspects I could give the character relating to their skintone because I actually don't care about representing different people. I just want to be viewed as inclusive and unproblematic by my peers and I do that by changing the characters skin and nothing else because all I care about it what skin color people have. Also I attack others for calling me out on this by telling them all they care about is the characters skin and asking why they care so much that I made the character with *x* skintone. Ect. Ect. Ect."
Listen we wouldn't have so much problem with this if people were actually creative about it.
There's nothing and I mean NOTHING wrong with wanting to explore a character with a different skin tone or culture or whatever.
It's when people have this attitude about it like the character is somehow better in someway for having an either lighter or darker skin tone. And yes I'm talking about both. Because both whitewashers and blackwashers do the exact same thing and have the exact same arguments as to why they think it's acceptable to racewash when they are both wrong.
It's supposed to be like race bending. It's supposed to be a fun way to explore a character in different ways.
It is NOT meant to be a way to "one up" the "Whites/Blacks" OR to belittle the original design. Not even "edits" are good because there's actually zero thought or research going into them. I've seen a significant amount of edits for middle eastern characters who are paler or tanned being made to look extremely dark even though alot of middle eastern countries and ethnicities are pale or lighter in color making the characters original design accurate actually.
People get so mad at characters like that because of their moms basement preception of reality that they don't even know what people from other countries even look like.
Never have I seen an actually well thought out redesign of a character where they actually explore said character with a different ethnicity and culture. It's always "wow *x* looks a million times better now and is so accurate to real life"
And hell this 8snt even touching upon the fact that some people mistake tan characters from somewhere like Europe or America or east and south(south east?) Asia as black. Not even Indian or Spanish or even Mexican. Not even native American or anything else. Just black. And if that's not telling how horrible people who blackwash are. Literally no better than white washers.
Or the fact that so many people assume Asian characters are automatically white because they don't have "Asian eyes" or yellow toned skin. (or the fact that alot of people will redesign pale Asian anime characters with yellow skin and slanted eyes to make it more "realistic" which as an Asian myself I consider that to be damned fucking racist)
There are ways to explore race in characters. There are ways to do so respectfully and without belittling the original ethnicity of the character. But that's not what people do. People just want to express their internal racism and prejudice and narrow and ignorant views on the world and it's people without being criticized by their peers.
Trust me I would not mind if someone took a character and decided to explore how their life would unfold and how characters might treat them (depending on how the world and it's people view such ethnicities) under a different ethnicity or culture. I would not mind if someone just wanted to see how they could design a character and their meanings but using a different culture. (like how two different flowers could have the same meaning. Or how different colors have different meanings. A character with the colors meaning passion might be designed with a different color of the same or similar meaning in a different culture), or how a character might choose a different path in life due to their culture or how they chose the same path despite their culture. there is just so much you can do but all people care about is the fucking skin and "how much better the character is now" with a different skin.
I hope that makes sense.
Posting since this is a reply to a previous problem.

this isn’t a total drama hot take but racewashing is racist. Whitewashing is racist and blackwashing is racist. Fighting racism with racism does nothing. You want more representation in a show that you like? Make ocs. Suggest to the creators to create characters like that (if the show is still actively being made). Don’t just take a white character and change their race to a poc and call it a day. And there’s also the problem with double standards. When someone raceswaps a poc, everyone freaks out and calls them ‘racist’. But when someone raceswapps a white/latino/Asian person, it’s ok because they’re making more representation. I’m just tired of people of people saying ‘blackwashing good and whitewashing bad’, they’re the same thing. They’re still racist.
Blackwashing isn’t a thing. It’s just straight up not real. Drawing a white character as black isn’t blackwashing. And if you claim it is, then you’re just racist. I’m sorry, but that’s all there is to it.
We’re not going to have this conversation on this blog. This isn’t up for debate

RIGHT
It so fucking infuriating when someone racewashes a character because they think they have some kind or stereo type or are "coded"
Like gender or sexuality are one thing so long as you don't try to claim it's canon when it's not confirmed officially
But when it comes to a characters damned skintone ESPECIALLY when the character isn't even human, it's just a bunch of racist trash. Even if done by black people.
There this one Asian character I like that's actually tan. They are literally just a tanned Asian character. But so many people claim they are "black-coded" or just straight up black because they can't seem to understand that Asians can be tanned. (and then there's those that think Asians can't be pale and must have a yellow skintone)
And it's not even just her skin. She has a "rock and roll" aesthetic, which BTW that music genre apparently come from the worlds equivalent of France so idk why they see so hung up on realism in that Fandom anyway. So she has this "scary appearance" that so many fans like to blame on her skin or think the game devs are being racist for describing her as "scary" when she has dark skin. But it's all because of her dress and make up. Like she's a tanned Asian woman they aren't scared of her because she has darker skin. Best part is that her clothes are still made like they are from her country just with a rock and roll aesthetic. She has an Asian name, lived in her worlds equivalent of a specific east Asian country. In the English dub she has a very American southern country accent. But that's literally just localization because if her English VA tried to do the Asian equivalent of an country accent it wouldn't make sense to English speakers. In her proper language she doesn't have that American country accent. She sounds how she's supposed to.
(I'm trying not to give away who she is too much)
And there's so much to her design that alot of black people try to claim is "African this" or "black coded that" and it so fucking annoying how little they know of anyone else's culture LET ALONE THEIR OWN since they can't even tell the difference between their culture and the one she's inspired by.
There is just so much wrong with racewashes and blackwashers especially I honestly don't even know what to do at this point.
They care so much about "representation" but they choose to do it in the most disgusting and disrespectful way. A way that was used against them but they seem to think it's okay for them to do because they have a victim complex.
Sorry for the rant this stuff just literally makes me so mad.
MY FIRST ANON ASK !!!
I don't have anything to add to this, but I'm not gonna let this rot in my inbox, since I agree with it so hard.

i just read "racewashing" for the first time today, and laughed it to scorn.
this is like the straights complaining about how many LGBTQ+ characters are "suddenly appearing" in shows and movies.
to them, it's not representation; it's an encroachment on their comfort and/or dominance. nevermind that they are not the only people on the planet, and the rest of us have gone largely without seeing ourselves at all in film, TV, and other forms of visual media since the medium was invented. each and every person concerned about "racewashing" and the inclusion of more queers in film needs to cry a fucking river, build a bridge, and get the fuck over it. the casting choices that are slowly, gently dismantling the vast visibility that cis, straight, and YT people have had since the film industry began are not at all anywhere near equal to the silencing or theft of other people's stories.
PS: let Tinkerbell be Black. if it were material to the story that she arrived to Neverland straight from the lands of the ancient Norse or Celts, then there could be an issue, but since the Disney-ass sparkly bitch just "growed" like Topsy, in a land literally made out of imagination, she can stand a tan.

AA Live action adaptation would also tone down/possibly remove entirely Narumitsu so as not to piss off China. Miles and Phoenix will actually hate each other and possibly make them Democrat/Republican.
Miles would be twisted into an evil white guy and sissy stereotype (but they will never allude to him being actually into men because again… Xinnie). There will be jokes about toxic masculinity related to him though.
Phoenix’ entire motivation to become an attorney will be “for the law” and Franziska will be so much more awesome than him and even make him accept “the law is bad and sexist and you have to break it.”
The dialogue will consist entirely of Cinemasins like quips and Marvel tier jokes.
Mia would get race washed, have even LESS screen time (her backstory in TT will be removed), and be the “sassy black girl mammy” stereotype. Her death at the hands of Redd White will use racist/historical symbolism and motifs. The directors will try to argue this is “more progressive” and call the critics “racist” even though it’s majority Black people who are upset and rightfully so.
Oh no, Narumitsu wouldn't be erased! It would be queerbaited to death, be the central focus of the marketing strategy, and then the only scene would be, I don't know, a 2 seconds hug. The line "he's a dear and indispensable friend" would be omitted, of course.
I hate that everything else sounds 100% plausible, especially Franziska becoming peak #girlboss #lesbianmommy (and maybe aged up to make her sexier without it being problematic, what do you mean that her young age is crucial to her personality?)
Oh, and speaking of Democrats and Republicans, Redd White would turn from an America-obsessed Japanese man (in the Japanese version), to a man who pretends to sound more cultured than he is (in the American version), to the most blatant, on-the-nose MAGA caricature you can imagine. Manfred would become a sexist, homophobic, transphobic white supremacist, because why not. Godot would be the most offensive macho Latino stereotype ever, and Franziska, instead of taking his insults, would go on a 5 minute rant on how hard her life is because she's a woman and how badass women are for surviving catcalling, mansplaining, manterrupting and manspreading.
And bonus points if Dahlia gets racewashed into a black girl because, well, redheads can't exist :^)
*sigh* I'm so glad that we have an actually good AA movie:

What really adds to the annoyance of racewashed mythological/folklore creatures is that, nature spirits exist in one form or another nearly everywhere. It would cost absolutely nothing to research different cultures and get inspired by them, instead of using the same four (Greek, Roman, Norse, Egyptian) ones and make yourself and your *wrong* interpretation of the figures a loud and popular one. It's not your culture ffs, either treat it with respect or take your dirty fingers off them.
US-American productions never do justice to other cultures, they never research what creatures (or variations of creatures that also exist in European folklore) other countries have. They are just rehashing the same old stories which they also claim to own while they don't. In the meantime they ignore how these folklore races work. Goblins are goblins. You can't have "Brown" goblins, "Mixed-race" goblins, "Asian' goblins, "Black" goblins, "White" goblins and so on! They are freaking goooblins 😂 Goblins is a race on its own! They somewhat happen to look "Caucasoid" in Europe because native Europeans made them up 😂

Feel stupid asking this but what Miss America show are you talking about? I’ve googled this title plus mcu show and what came up was Ms Marvel. Is that what you mean or am I dumb and google has simply failed me?
I think Ms Marvel was supposed to be Marvel's miss America, which is why the racewashing isn't ok. If they're gonna do a ripoff, they should do it right. I don't think they even gave her lesbian moms smh.

I just noticed your carrd says dni if you support Asian hate but where’s dni if you support blm hate/hate blm supporters oh yeah that’s right your racist anti black ass hate anything that got to do with blk ppl from characters to them having fun making edits you don’t need help you need to go to hell and keep blk ppl out ya mouth
Look.
If you're the same person who sent me that other ask that's filled with death threats regarding the DNI in my carrd if you support asian hate, blackwashing/whitewashing/racewashing, get a life and stop harassing people for it
I'll admit that I should have been more CLEARER in DNI and I'll change it soon so that people won't misunderstand anymore about it
Personally, for me, I'm actually fine with people making black edits of their favourite characters whatsoever. Or how some people like to change up the character's outlook appearance to their own preferences or ideation. To some, black editing is a way for black people/artists to have representation in media and I, 100%, fully respect that because even though I'm not a black person myself; I can see that there's a distinctive lack of black representation in all sorts of media. Whether it's an anime, a series of sort, film, etc etc. That's what I'm perfectly fine with
The thing I'm not perfectly fine with are the ones who actively try to shove it down your throat and force you to accept it. I've got my fair share of seeing people who does black editing but they act like they're more superior than others. The ones who put " [insert character name] is much more better off being black <3, if you don't like it, might as well kys " in their caption or how they go into the comment section under the artwork of a dark skinned character writing out " um, [ insert dark skinned character ] is actually black/blasian so the way you're portraying them is wrong :/ "
THOSE are the kinds that I do not want to interact with.
Having dark skin doesn't automatically make someone a black/blasian person and this also applies to having fair/white skin doesn't automatically make someone white person either. It sickens me to often see these kinds of people pitting with one another on which race (black people and white people) is better than the other so I, on the other hand, would rather NOT get involved with ANY of that thus I placed "DNI if you support asian hate, Blackwashing/Whitewashing/Racewashing" in my carrd
In short, I'm alright with people who support/make black editing on characters. As long as they don't try to enforce it on me.
And for god's sake, try to have a different mindset. Just because someone does not like a certain thing that certain/most black people do which is black editing doesn't equate to them fucking hate black people. If you think that I'm racist, wouldn't that make me a hypocrite for liking Leona and Jack from Twisted Wonderland to which they're also dark skinned??? And that they're also based on African origins (The Lion King is set in Africa but is also loosely based on Kenya and Tanzania) ???
