You can think about Star Trek Discovery all you want.
You can say about it not having enough emotion all you want.
It will not stop me from bawling my eyes out, everytime I watch "An Obol for Charon" (s02e04] or "Project Daedalus" (s02e09) or the whole dying thing from Hugh Culber or sad Baby Spock or when Micheal reunites with the crew or...
Think what you are, but I do not believe that there are no emotions inthis show.
Please no disrespectful comments, I can understand, when some people do not agree with my opinion but that's what it is, my opinion.
I like DIscovery. It has definetly room for improvement but that applies to almost every movie or tv show out there.

what does rhys do while not firing at things, we ask.
well. this.
now on ao3 by popular demand!
Bryce just sighs. It is pretty useless to keep Rhys on the bridge when there’s no red alert to be had, but Lorca is a captain who believes in preparedness at all times -- even if that does mean sacrificing the sanity of the rest of his bridge crew to do it.

Disco 3.02, “Far From Home”
MY BABIES ARE BACK!!! MY BABIES ARE BACK!!!!!
Tumblr media
Oh boy...
Using graviton beams or whatever to "soften up" the planet's surface before they crashed was a first in I think any Star Trek content, canon or not, and a genuinely new-to-me science fiction idea, so I loved that—not quite as much as the holo-movie Cerritos's saucer rolling like a penny, and definitely not as much as I enjoyed seeing a starship I love crash on a planet but more or less fly away from it.
Great to see Tig Notaro back and finally get the "angry, greying lesbian with a bad back" representation that I deserve. Check out her conversation with Paul F. Tompkins on the last episode of The Pod Directive, where she reveals that Jett Reno will never be a regular character because she doesn't want this as a regular job—she flies up to Canada once in a while, hangs out with a bunch of people she likes working with for a few days, and then goes back to her wife and kids and comedy career, and that's exactly how she likes it. She's living the dream, folks.
I kind of disengaged with the whole Culber-and-Stamets storyline in Season 2 because Season 2 was such a mess, so it was a pleasant surprise to me the way those two immediately managed to get me in the feels.
Why is Saru suddenly calling Mirror!Georgiou "Commander"? Isn't she still O.G.-universe Captain Philippa on the books?
Awwww, RSVP poor Octopus Head! I wonder if they decided to pull another Airiam and get that poor actress out of the prosthetic.
Listen, as a proud scalie... supporter... I'm in favour of Saurians getting all the love they want, but Georgiou/Linus is gonna be a no from me, dude. No matter how many of Georgiou's weird tattoos he can actually see with his impressively large... eyes.
Michelle Yeoh is (still) having so much fun I'm starting to wonder if Section 31 might actually end up watchable. It's kind of a shame that S31 has to be a Star Trek, tbh: it's the least Star Trek premise ever, but file off the serial numbers and think about "a high-budget sci-fi action/dark-dramedy spy series on streaming TV starring Michelle Yeoh" for a hot minute. And then think about it from a TV producer's POV. A humanist vision of the future doesn't mean jack shit when they're backing up a money truck that big.
Anyway, ice! I live far enough north that –40° is not an unusual winter temperature—I once had a bottle of Diet Coke turn to slush in my hand while waiting for the bus—and there was something about the parasitic ice blossoming all over the hull as we heard the ship's superstructure straining from the inside that felt deeply haunting and visceral to me. I was appropriately nervous for Saru and Tilly in the bar standoff, but the plight of the Discovery filled me with legit atavistic dread. (Gotta say that "parasitic ice" is a terrible name, though—speaking of humanist SF, you couldn't spare a Cat's Cradle reference?)
I remember a few TV shows whose DVD releases removed all the sharp cuts to black for commercials, like actually re-edited the episodes slightly so the act breaks just flowed together, and I was never sure how I felt about that: like it or not, 70+ years of TV broadcasting and 30+ years of TV shows on home video have made those gaps part of the language of the medium. Unless you watch this episode in Canada tonight, or on CBS three years from now, the last act break goes from the resolved standoff to the sun setting over the imperilled Discovery, cuts to black for a few seconds... then comes back to a few shots of the ice engulfing Discovery's hull at dusk, and then picks up inside with Reno and Stamets. And I don't know if it would have been better or worse without that caesura in the middle—but it would have been materially different if we'd gone directly from the bar to Disco exterior to Disco interior. That little pause doesn't just affect the pacing, it's a deliberate part of it.
I’m worried about Keyla :( :( :( And I feel really bad about what happened to Cal—it didn’t feel gratuitous (for a change), but it was still sad.
And once again, even though I knew exactly what was going to happen, Michael’s arrival still had me full-on weeping—and I've seen that Mylvia hug half a dozen times already but I know I'm going to sob at it next week too. See you (with Kleenex) then!!!

A fluffy little coda for the finale of season 3. Rhys and Bryce get the chance to decompress, recover, and maybe even address some feelings brought to the fore by their near-death experience.

Culber gets the entire crew one present. A karaoke machine for the mess hall. No sleep was had that night.
No sleep was had that night OR the next like 3 days as staff splits down by their jobs to see Who Has The Best Singers in Total
Medical *crushes* the other scientists, manages to overcome the majority of Engineering, and is about to crush the Command team when Detmer, flanked by Nhan and Bryce, casually stroll over to the karaoke machine together in a collaborative “Bridge Squad” effort
They win in a landslide, and there is peace in the dining hall at last.... for about a week until new songs are added and winnings are challenged and it’s War Once Again

Bridge crew movie night headcanons
So we know from Tilly's to-do list that she organizes crew movie nights, and it turns out I have a LOT of thoughts about what those are probably like:
Detmer likes modern Martian action movies and trashy Tellarite serial dramas. She also has a soft spot for old Oscar bait from Earth, but stuff that hasn't been properly remastered isn't always compatible with her prosthetic eye. Airiam knows a re-encoding trick that works most of the time; the rest of the time, Keyla just turns her eye off and snuggles into Joann on that side.
Owosekun likes old animated movies: mid-modern Disney, Miyazaki, and these infrared Andorian musicals from the First Age that required almost everyone to wear special glasses just to see the screen. (Detmer and Airiam, on the other hand, got to watch in 3D.)
Tilly's more into organizing the movie nights than the movies themselves. Making sure everyone has a place to sit, enough blankets, drinks, etc. etc. Michael usually has to coax her to sit down, and ten minutes later she's cuddled up under Michael's arm.
Michael likes documentaries (everyone else: "ugggghhh") but she does try to pick ones with lots of interesting facts and a twist or two. Movie nights are her favourite crew social activity, because she's not expected to be "on" and making small talk the whole time.
Saru is really into biopics of important people in Federation history. He and Michael try to convince the rest of the crew that this isn't extremely fucking boring. They are not successful.
Rhys, it turns out, has an encyclopedic knowledge of romantic comedies from three centuries on six different planets, and alternates the most obscure and delightful ones with the most mainstream (they're all equally enjoyed, nobody except Gen can really tell the difference).
Bryce has three young siblings, so he has Opinions™ about children's entertainment (and knows a lot about recent developments to Flotter), and once in a while he'll bring in something that's actually worth watching.
Airiam doesn't snack, but she brings snacks for everyone else; she of course has an excellent memory for everyone's favourites. She sits on the floor (augmented joints ftw), off to the side a little, because she likes watching the crew react to movies as much as she likes watching them herself.
If you enjoyed this post, I encourage you to reblog with more!

@brycecousland  says  :  ❝ no one’s ever done that to me before... ❞ TOUCH STARVED  /  accepting
Raphael pulls away slightly and watches Bryce’s face with mild concern. He’s fearful that he’s crossed a line, created a discomfort between the pair of them that hadn’t existed prior. The kiss to Bryce’s temple almost seemed automatic              natural              to the vampire; it’s his way of showing innocent affection since touch, really, is his love language after all. Raph still holds onto the other’s hand, sandwiched between lengthy fingers that stroke at its knuckles. “ I won’t do it again if it makes you uncomfortable. ”
