Ed's emerald ring, a love story

We barely see the Emerald ring this episode. We see it for a split second when Ed is talking to the kids (when the crew isn't around) and then the only other time we see it is when Stede and Ed are alone in Stede's quarters.

But boy oh boy, does that ring beam when Ed and Stede are making out. I took so many pictures because it was nearly impossible to capture it's sparkle. I highly recommend rewatching that scene (for science!) and watch the ring. It shouldn't be as visible as it is.

The room is so dark. It would have been easy to just not see the emerald ring at all, but to my untrained eye it looks like they took extra care to light the ring so it shined. I'd love to hear from someone who actually knows about lighting design who would corroborate.

I've been reading a lot of @follows-the-bees posts (by a lot i mean all of them), I highly highly highly recommend them and i'd be fascinated to learn what they thought about this lighting.

okay. in alignment with the shows values and characterization (as in, if we continued observing these characters post gojo sale), i think stewy would fully ignore kendall until he called. he might text him a couple times to make sure he was alive or whatever but he’s gonna be partying and living his best life. also, to stewy this is the best outcome ever. he gets his money (i don’t know enough about business to know if he stays on as a shareholder but either way i think he doesn’t lose anything from this. except for a few years of his life thanks to roy shenanigans) and KENDALL GETS OUT. which is what he asked him to do way back in season 1. stewys so happy and content post-finale literally cat that got the cream. AND he didn’t alienate kendall bc he still voted with him. anyways, kendall’s gonna ghost (schrödinger’s suicide) and go off the rails! for sure!! because this is not something he can come back from, there’s no more pretend demons to fight—logan’s dead and the company’s out of family hands forever there isn’t anything he can do. but colin is not letting another roy die on his watch no way so unfortunately for kendall he’s gonna live. and eventually he will find his way back to stewy and stewy will offer him sex drugs whatever to fill his time and the logan shaped hole inside of him. the end.

my personal headcanons include: they get caught out by paparazzi who have lots of fun speculating about them until they literally just start making out alll over the place which ppl r into for a very short period of time before they get annoyed. and then mostly nobody cares anymore except a subsection of insane gay people who wanna see old men yaoi as they should. i think kendall starts up a flop rap career which stewy wholeheartedly supports and indulges, and then he starts a record label and signs a billion flop acts but somehow lucks out with one really talented musician who manages to boost kendall’s reputation even though his job at the label is literally Do Not Do Anything Or Say Anything Or Touch Anything just let the professionals work Please. eventually a producer convinces him to record and release L to the OG which blows up. kendall records an album that’s mostly covers with some originals (that are actually kind of good) and goes on tour. the tour flops because he runs out of steam halfway through and becomes manic again but we can’t have it all. stewy is there the whole time enabling him of course.

Movie Review | Stay Hungry (Rafelson, 1976)

I remember catching parts of this years ago on GameTV, a game-show-centric cable channel that would fill up dead air with vaguely competition-themed films. I guess there are only so many Price is Right reruns you can play on a given day before people notice. Before you ask, we didn't actually pay for it, it was just one those channels Rogers Cable had on perpetual free preview, and I have to assume the reason it lasted as long as it did was because it was likely cheap enough to run a channel on game show reruns and a handful of not especially popular movies. Anyway, the only parts I remembered are Jeff Bridges partaking in a hoedown, and R. G. Armstrong (super sleazy, with a bad hairpiece to boot) chucking weights at Bridges (not during the hoedown; this was a different scene). Upon this rewatch, I can confirm I remembered both those things correctly.

Probably the most notable thing about this movie is the cast. Aside from Bridges and Armstrong, you get Sally Field, Joe Spinell, Robert Englund, Scatman Crothers, and in a substantial supporting role, a pre-superstardom Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold hasn't nailed the finely calibrated comic timing he would achieve a decade or so later, but he's still quite charismatic at this point, and the movie uses him for texture, one of a number of character actors helping to breathe life into the particular world the movie depicts. Something that's fun to consider is how if you took these actors and put them together in any other decade, it would make for a completely different movie. Let's try it out. Bridges and Spinell working together in the '80s would likely mean a neonoir or urban thriller, the latter probably playing a sleazy lawyer or something, and maybe Englund playing some poor bastard who's been wrongfully accused of some horrific crime. Or Arnold and Sally Field in the '90s, the former going undercover in drag for action-packed and/or comedic results. Now if we all work together, we can Mandela Effect these into existence, Goncharov-style. What do you mean you haven't seen Fraulein Dautfeuer? I guess your folks didn't have a VHS player growing up.

As for the actual movie, it's interesting how it resists easy classification. It's about a few things: a hero rejecting the rigid expectations of his class, a predatory patriarch exploiting the athletes under his wing, a portrait of the south at a very particular time. Most movies would opt to be just one of those things. This one drifts across all three at a leisurely pace, less interested in finding a clear trajectory than in just basking in its environment. There is plenty of humour, less in the form of gags than in the eccentric details that fill the movie. (Exhibit A: Crothers returning after resigning so he can take the suit of knight's armour that was willed to him. Exhibit B: A swarm of bodybuilders running through the streets searching of Arnold only to end up posing at the request of bystanders. Exhibit C: A shakedown foiled by karate.) I don't know how much it really amounts to, but I like these actors and I enjoyed spending time with them. Also, Arnold plays the fiddle, which automatically makes this a good movie.

This is first time I've watched this in adulthood, this movie is fucking beautiful. Colorful neon streets, the villains are in incredible Technicolor, but also had that 1940-50s mob movie noir style.

It's a goddamn art piece. The matte painting backgrounds, the lighting, the insanely beautifully made character makeups for the mobsters.

There are so many old school character actors mixed with contemporary guys like Pacino etc. And then you have brilliant Dick Van Dyke as a crooked character!

I'll even go out on a limb and say even Madonna was excellent!

It's a cleverly built movie, beautiful visuals, unbelievably beautiful makeup.

It's a treasure!

Page 2. ---- Network of Fighter Stations Boasts New High-Speed Squadron ---- A West Coast Canadian Port, April 18 - (CP) - Canada's west coast today boasts a new high-speed fighter squadron of the R.C.A.F., a veritable hornet's nest. Personnel of the new squadron just established in the network of fighter stations on the Pacific coast includes decorated veterans of the Battle of Britain and a sprinkling of youngsters. 

The leader is Squadron Leader Dal Russell. 26, "veteran" of the Battle of Britain. He won the D.F.C. at the same time as his immediate superior officer. Wing Commander Ernest McNab, who commands the sprawling network of fighter stations on this coast.

The squadron leader's men are young and keen. There is Pilot Officer R. F. Reid. 19, who moved from a peaceful high school class-room into the Commonwealth Air Training Plan, and hence to the cockpit of a fighter. Another is Warrant Officer H. A. Taylor, 27, former lumberman.

Some of the squadron's leaders. are younger than the men. Flight Commander of one group is Flight Lieutenant Allan G. Byers, 26. Pilot Officer Fred Heather, at 30. is one of the oldest members. He calls Reid "Junior" and in return. gets dubbed "Old Man Mose."

Typical ground crew men from Ontario and Quebec are: Corporal Gordon R. Johnson, 26, radio technician; Aircraftman Jim Gore. 23, armorer: Corporal J. N. Stewart, 25. rigger: Leading Aircraftman W. E. Armstrong. 19. fitter; Aircraftman G. F. Keller, 22, once a drug store clerk, now an electrician, and Aircraftman Briand Lacrocque, 21, instrument maker.

Hanging in the operations room is the "rubble roll" a long list of offences and fines ranging from 10 cents for swearing over the plane-to-ground radio. to five cents for leaving an unused parachute anywhere but in a locker.
