RIP, Matsumoto Leiji
What a life's work and what an influence on scifi, anime, and so many childhoods! Feels good to be in the company of Daft Punk in this, too.
When I was in Japan, we joined the Tokyo cruise on one of the ships of Matsumoto-sensei's design! My first time sailing on a spaceship, I'll always remember that day fondly. Even for an adult, it was pretty impressive! His work will live on.

Matsumoto's Harlock is more of a somber space opera. It's poetic and romantic, like a fairy tale set in outer space. I've never seen a sci-fi quite like it.
Carl Macek tried to bring it over along with Queen Millennia with tragic results. Instead of like Robotech where Macross was followed up by an adaptation of Southern Cross and Mospeada ala Jojo Parts, Harlock and Millennia were... subplots to each other.
Compounding it was the lack of time in production needed to make it remotely work. It's a shame because Queen Millennia is an earliest point in the Leijiverse and featured a young boy protagonist. I could see Hajime Amamori being adapted as Captain Harlock in his youth before the world is changed by aliens.
Queen Millennia has its narration told by an older Captain Harlock recounting his youth, setting up his fascination in space travel and justice for the downtrodden. I could see a dub faithful to both shows overall yet written to tie them in with a big time skip.
What could've been, man?
