my sister getting curious about quantum mechanics when she was in fifth grade and studying it for weeks for a project before giving up has most definitely done irreparable damage to my psyche bc now i'll just read wikipedia pages abt quantum mechanics and i'll be like, "yeah, yeah, the fundamental particle acts like both a particle and a wave at the same time for inexplicable reasons, we all know this."

tee hee i have to sleep now but ill continue working on this tomorrow, but you can take a look at its current state.
The Theory of Essential Qualities
The theory of essential qualities claims that magic is created from the manipulation of certain fundamental essences of the universe that make up all things, both in the physical and metaphysical spaces.
What is an essence?
An essence is a fundamental quality of the universe that permeates or embodies a construct, which is a physical and metaphysical “thing” made up of a unique combination of essences in a certain orientation, proximity, and number. All “things” in the entire universe, both physical and metaphysical, are constructs.
What does an essence do?
The essence does some function to maintain a stable construct through “qualation”. Essences will always desire a stable configuration, but they are not typically particular about having a certain configuration. They could be anywhere, as long as they can make a stable construct. Loose essences are thought to be extremely rare or nonexistent, as no evidence or proof of them has ever been found. A hypothetical explanation for loose essences relies on the idea of a “non-construct” that is something that cannot possibly be conceived of. These loose essences, then, in between stable configurations, are called “anti-quality essences” because since they do not inhabit a stable configuration, they do not qualate anything, and thus have no qualities.
What is qualation?
Qualation is a verb that describes the function of an essence in relation to its position in space and time. It is not just what the essence does in its construct, but where it is, how many there are, and where it is in time relative to the rest of the construct. Instead of referring to all these things individually, which would get redundant, we just use the term “qualate” to describe all of it.
How many essences are there?
Six different essences have been identified based on how they qualate. Those essences, and a simplified explanation of their qualation are below.
Perfection - Qualates everything except itself. When manipulated, it produces Abjurations.
Harmony - Qualates all that is between itself and another essence. When manipulated, it produces Evocations.
Subtlety - Qualates everything in small amounts. When manipulated, it produces Transmutations.
Beauty - Qualates form (assembly of essences) and perception. When manipulated, it produces Illusions and Enchantments.
Philosophy - Qualates all matter and the spirit. When manipulated, it produces Conjurations and Necromancies.
Change - Qualates the past and the future. When manipulated, it produces Divinations.
What are the physical and metaphysical spaces?
The physical and metaphysical spaces come from the conflict of what is and is not. When a wizard casts a fireball, he is conjuring up an “is” from an “is not”. Something is now there that wasn't there before. Earlier theories (such as the outdated conservation genesis theory) claimed that fire must have come from some other equivalent instance of fire elsewhere in the physical world. That theory did not have a conception of the metaphysical, and could not deal with the contradictions of the theory, like that demonstrated through the Edric experiment, where arcana researchers led by Aelward Edric at the Academy of Agarico created a completely new material using alchemical techniques, a purposefully volatile material so that researchers could be sure that it could not already exist in nature. An expert in conjuration magic was given this material to copy. If conservation genesis theory was true, when the conjuration expert created a copy of this completely unique material (now called Edricium), the one existing piece of Edricium would instantaneously disappear, its matter being transferred to the conjurer’s creation. However, the conjurer was able to create an identical copy of the existing Edricium without the original piece disappearing. This showed that matter was not just transferred from somewhere else in the physical world, but was materialised from seemingly nothing. This was the first in many experiments that gave more and more evidence for a metaphysical space outside of our world.

Pilgrim's Medallion with St. Symeon the Younger, c. 1100, Cleveland Museum of Art: Medieval Art
Saint Symeon the Younger (ad 521-592) was a hermit who isolated himself high upon a column for 37 years. Afterwards, Symeon's column was venerated as a relic at the center of the church of Qualat-Siman in Syria. His shrine attracted many pilgrims carried home lead-cast tokens as a blessing. This lead medallion represents a later revival of these original pilgrim's tokens. It was probably worn around the neck as a pendant.

hope you’re going alright through the lockdown! I’m finding it very reminiscent of the lockdown in the UK, and it’s definitely driving me up the wall, but I’m glad to stay home to stop the spread. and it feels like there’s so much more hope in this lockdown in NZ! I remember in the first few days there were a few articles (mostly) from British sources calling the PM insane for locking down for ‘only one case’ and how we, NZ, need to get with the times and embrace Covid. It made me sad, not for us, but because for them zero covid must seem like such an impossible idea they have to make fun of anyone who tries to remain covid free. I’m glad the numbers are looking up, and I’m hoping everyone makes a full recovery, as optimistic as that may be.
This is also a super old anon - sorry I wasn't able to respond while I was still in lockdown. Love and solidarity and thanks if you're in Auckland and still in lockdown.
I was able to form a bubble with my family, which was totally transformative, so it didn't remind me very much of lockdown in the UK. Although at times it was still really hard.
I do think that lockdown in New Zealand is qualatatively different from lockdown in many other places. With elimination there's a purpose, and even if sometimes it feels far away, it does make a real difference. I also think it's really different when it ends. In the UK, when lockdown eased, I was always having to do this calculation 'is this actually safe for me and everyone else?' It's so relaxing to know that if you do the things that are allowed it'll be OK.
I think in a lot of places the idea of zero covid is impossible - certainly with delta (if we achieve it here it will be amazing). I feel like often in UK COVID discourse people aren't reacting to what's happened in NZ, but the way what's happened in NZ has been represented in the UK. And given how much harm and how little good their managed isolation system has done - and the incredibly racist lines it's run under (and how inevitable it was that it would operate that way), I have a lot of sympathy. I just wish people talking about NZ in the UK would talk about things like, simplicity and clarity, meeting people's needs, emphasis on building co-operation rather than policing, actively rejecting shame as a tool of enforcement or increased sick leave - rather than thinking an incredibly badly run version of MIQ will make the difference.
(For anyone not from NZ who is interested - I do recommend this article showing how actively engaged one of NZ's gangs are in the COVID elimination project).
I'm really hopeful that it will be possible to eliminate COVID again. Today's numbers looked really good. The low CFR suggests that the vaccination of over 65s has already made a huge difference. And the way COVID found it's way to the most deprived communities with terrifying speed and efficiency - shows why there's absolutely no option except to keep trying to stamp it out and keep vaccinating.

A qualat for @elektroyu! You drew one with mouse markings earlier, and I’ve loved their design for a long time, so I wanted to give it a go. I gave it one of your little boy’s markings, I hope you don’t mind!

Are you out of shape, carrying a significant amount of unwanted #fat , and have your #eating #habits and overall #nutrition been a straight up “lit” dumpster fire for months or years? 🤷♂️ • If “yes”, well, number one…you know it. Number two, you probably want to do something about it and you don’t like it...you know it needs to change. Right? 💁♂️ • BUT…the thought of undergoing some massive amount of change and overhauling things completely from the word “go” is daunting and scary yes? If you have been a nutrition and #fitness “zero” for quite some time, the idea of eating some ultra-regimented #mealplan comprised of only 6 foods, a set number of #meals, and having to weigh measure all of it all the time may seem like “too much too soon”. Trying to go from “zero to hero” in this area at the drop of the hat, for some, is a recipe for disaster. 😩 • Some people would be better off taking a more relaxed, “rolling snowball” or “slow throttle acceleration” type of approach, starting with more QUALATATIVE habits and progressively moving towards a more dialed in, QUANTITATIVE and precise approach as outlined in the graphic. 👌 • Continued in comments... https://www.instagram.com/p/B1gi74khFih/?igshid=14nn3xsdeo2nd

Alright, so this is tentatively finished! And scanned instead of photographed for once! I'm asking if anyone sees anything minor that can be fixed. Given the fact that this is gouache and watercolor (watersoluble media!) only so much can be done before things turn to mud. We don't want mud.
I'm going to be out of town until late Sunday, (CAMPING!) so I'll be able to come back to it with a refreshed mind to see if I can polish it a little more, tweak shadows and highlights, etc.
I am very pleased that this has been as fun to work on as I had hoped. I find I enjoy pieces more when I have a strong color palette in mind and good inspiration! I still have so much to learn, but I think I might finally be on the right track. :)
