Yasuyuki Okamura’s debut at the Budokan: “I want people to take the title 'YELLOW' in their own way when they hear it”

With his debut between last year and this year, it is safe to say with no exaggeration that Yasuyuki Okamura is one of most promising newcomers in the music industry… The interest in his work was sparked by him providing songs for Misato Watanabe and Koji Kikkawa among others. His first stage appearance was at the Nippon Budokan, shortly after the release of his debut single “OUT OF BLUE” (EPIC Sony). Despite the unusual format of a guest appearance at the public radio event, it was a success from the outset. He acted like a “show-off” but had a kind of “star” glamour.

“A debut show at the Budokan is something you’ll never experience again, and it’s a very special experience. I’m interested in doing more shows, because many people lack showmanship: the spirit is the best sense of the word.”

Okamura’s long-awaited debut album “YELLOW”, released in March, had been in the works for 10 months. Apart from some assistance with lyrics and arrangements, the music is all his own, self produced. In fact, this was apparently the reason for the album’s delay in completion.

“I was originally going to have someone else to write the lyrics: but when I did, the words didn’t really suit me. And so I wrote my own, I worked very hard but I can’t just leave it to someone else. If you don’t sing what you think, or what you think about yourself, you won’t inspire any affection for the song itself.”

His songs are filled with a quiet anger. In the flood of modern information and world affairs it sounds like a cry of “I won’t be fooled.” The problems plaguing the Middle East and famine in Africa are all sung about on an everyday level, transmitted through the brown noise of TV. However, there is a strong sense that the message is not being said out loud, but rather it is internally understood. “I don’t mean to sound like another 60s douche, but I’m not sure what I can even do about it. So naturally I have to be a bystander… There are a hundred different ways to receive the news, if that is the case, then it’s not for me to tell them to do this or that, but rather to leave it to themselves to understand. The title of the LP is “YELLOW”, I want everyone who hears it to take it in any way they want, so that’s why I gave it this title. It’s vague but I think it comes across well, though.” For example, the track ‘Water Bed’ on the LP interpolates The Beatles’ ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ lyrics.

Yasuyuki Okamura will hold a one-man concert at Shibuya Public Hall on 22nd of April.

Q36. 会考虑再写有副CP的文吗？

墨香铜臭：这个问题也是我以前反复思量的。

不会了。写耽美感情戏是很需要精力的，一对主CP已经占据了我全部的注意力，如果不是恶搞欢乐向，没有多余的精力再分给其他人了……

其实最初渣反的向天打飞机和漠北君我也没想过要写成CP的（讲道理，他打飞机其实一开始根本没有这么多戏份好吗，就是个临时拉出来打酱油的），但是因为渣反大纲本来就很随便，后面瞎写着，突然发现，咦？怎么回事？他们好像还挺可爱的？！加上这本很恶搞，CP不CP无所谓，所以为他们破一次例了。不过不会再有例外了。

看别人的作品我偶尔可以接受多CP，但是叫我自己写，我就不太喜欢了。因为我会觉得在这么几个人里出现这么多基佬真的很不可思议。忘了在哪里看到的一句话，一个作品的真实感来源于感性真实而非物理真实。作为作者，我脑海里的世界对我来说就是真实世界。我可以说服自己一个神神鬼鬼满天飞的世界是真实的世界，但我无法说服自己一个全民BL的世界是一个真实的世界。

之前瞥到有个提问者说：“即使不是爱情，人与人之间还是有很多复杂的感情也非常动人，一味归为爱情很微妙。”是的，许多冲突的设计动力就不是基于爱情，所以会有更多可解读性。对我来说，这种程度已经让我觉得OK了，写的够爽了，情感真实，故事可以成立，冲突也足够激烈。

在非爱情的前提下，一些人做一些事可以用辩证的目光来看待（什么），而一旦直接打了个爱情的标签，思考问题的方式就会多少有些扭曲，讨论点会偏移到一些我觉得并不用纠结地方，比如，谁对不起谁谁付出更多谁配不上谁谁渣谁贱。这并不是我设计故事的初衷，所以多少会有点可惜。

但只要不拆逆主CP，萌什么我都不会管。我自己看正常向番也经常吃CP吃得很开心，看文不就找个乐子。脑补或吃CP随意，不拆逆主CP就行。

但不要太真情实感。尤其不要走火入魔。不知道怎么回事，的确会有人因为萌她想象中的“副CP”萌到走火入魔，发展到��端，开始对不给她盖章的作者我产生怨恨。对这种事，我很无语，也很无奈了。所以告诫大家，随便看看就算了，小心不要被白衣逆那种人带进阴沟，走火入魔。

Q36. Would you consider writing a novel which contains vice ship again?

MXTX: I've considered this question many times.

The answer is NO. Writing BL emotional drama consumes lots of energy. I put all of my concentrate on the main couple, so if it's not a burlesque comedy, I won't have any spare energy for any others......

Actually, I didn't ship Airplane bro and MoBei Jun in SV as a couple in the beginning. (TBH，Airplane bro really didn't have as many appearance and parts at first. He was supposed to be a minor role temporarily). But because the original outline of SV was quite casual, while I was writing, I suddenly realized that, what? He seems to be a little cute?! And also, this novel was created for shits and giggles, so it doesn't matter whether they are a 'couple' or not. They are just an accidental exception and I won't make this exception again.

I can accept multiple ships when I read other people's work, but I don't like to write it myself. Because I think it's unbelievable to have so many homosexual people in such a small group of people. "The realism of a work comes from emotional reality rather than physical reality." I forgot where this sentence comes from. As an author, the world in my mind is a real world for me. I can convince myself that a world full of cultivators and ghosts is a real world, but I can't convince myself that a world of homosexual-only is a real world.

I saw a person before questioning that: even if it is not love, there are still a lot of complicated emotions between people and those are touching too. When these feelings are always attributed to love, it's kind of ambiguous. That’s right, often designing motivation for conflicts are not based solely on love, so there will be more room for interpretation. For me, this degree has made me feel like it's OK, it’s good enough to write, emotionally honest, the story can be set up, and the conflict is intense enough.

Without love，people can do things from a dialectical/logical point of view；however，when it comes to love, the way people think about things will become a little twisted. People may be more concerned with points which are unimportant, like who should say sorry, who paid more, who doesn’t deserve the love, or who is the bastard and the unprincipled person. These things are not what I intend to tell in my stories, so it's a little disappointing.

But as long as the main couples stay unbreakable and irreversible, I don't mind any other couples. I often enjoy shipping couples when I enjoy other regular stories. Having fun when reading is the only thing that matters. Ship any couples you like, as long as you don't break or reverse the main couple.

But do not take things too seriously, especially do not go wild with something. I don't know what happened on earth, there are actually some people who go wildly crazy to an extreme about their imaginary 'vice ship' and start to harbour resentment against me, just because I didn't approve of 'their love' as the author. For such issues, I'm speechless and powerless. So this is my warning to everyone, just read the story for fun, please be cautious with some people like *白衣逆，do not let them lead you to a deflected path and slip into the dark side.

*白衣逆，a MXTX's hater. She is a crazy fan of Xue Yang and once made rumours against MXTX.

The original translation is already very good, I don't know what more I can add to it.

There isn't a single controversial thing in this part of the interview. They're all mainstream positions and preferences in danmei community:

crack ships are fine. reverse or break up canon cp is off limit. of course you can still do it, but most danmei authors would say they don't like it. mxtx just said what many other danmei authors have said. it's not just about personal preferences, if you ask your readers to be invested in your canon ship, you don't go around and validate other ships that you didn't write and didn't make canon.

no body cares about being woke in danmei fandom. danmei writers do not compete on the number of gay canon ships. one canon ship per novel is the default. idk why people say this is homophobic, bg novels, the majority of them, have only one canon cp too.

people complain only the main characters get a happy ending. authors don't owe your fav a happy ending, authors don't owe you a canon ship at all. some authors had the nerves to give the main girl a harem and NOT have her ending up with any of them in the ending.

Personally I reverse ship canon cp too, but if I wrote something, and made a canon ship, I would dislike people reverse or break it up too. This shouldn't be hard to understand. I ship to my own preferences, but i don't own the characters, the authors have every right to tell me i'm shipping it wrong.

what can you tell me about FIO

well umm first and foremost fio is my awful hospital selfship self insert but i guess thats kind of obvious.. um she arrived at the hospital through a sui attempt but fell asleep on the ambulance ride to a normal hospital (which is a distortion of an actual personal anecdote) and woke up all patched up.. her gown is on backwards because (another personal anecdote) the clothing they gave her was too big and so the collar went down too far. umm she thought she was in purgatory at first but immediately went like "no lol if i died i would be in hell" and so started messing around in the hospital without really any goal in mind. eventually she met jay and got all boycrazy. they were kind of on and off lovers - off because jay would get bored of her and on because he kind of pitied her (and also needed something to stick his dick in - i mean, hey, he WOULD be like that) before the q36. honestly she would probably like joe too but she rarely goes to the cafe and even then gets uncomfortably jealous of flair for always getting to be a part of him. she was also kind of flirty with crash too but in more of a playful way.. needless to say the q36 procedure kind of destroyed her. she soon came crying over to phage and now theyve got a weird thing going on because of course they do. i dont really have any more lore for her umm shes on surprisingly good terms w the staff despite her tomfoolery. theyre just like ohh classic fio! and go on with their days. her name pun (since all of the humans have puns on their color scheme) is fire.. fio.. fire.. u get the jist. all in all shes a friggin nerd and a bit of a mary sue but thats ok because this damn webcomic has no rules. she frequently wanders around the hospital and gets up in peoples business when shes bored which is actually how she met jay in the first place.

There's one thing about this scene in chapter 5 of Replace Plus that I've been wondering about ever since I first saw it. Why was the club money given to Kiyoshi?

Since Riko is the team's coach and kind of slash manager, it makes sense when she's the person receiving the money from the school. But isn't the team treasurer Izuki? Logically he should be the one holding onto that money afterwards. In fact he was holding the club fund in Q36:

So why was Kiyoshi given the money and Izuki, the actual person responsible for keeping that money safe, playing just the same role as all the other members in that chapter

「MONSTER好きに50の質問」31〜50問目まで。

答えるのがゆっくりすぎでしたが答え終わりました。

Q32:ロベルトって結局、生きていると思いますか？

　完全に亡くなったと認識していました。生きていることを匂わす部分ってあったかな？

　MONSTERでは作中意図的に人を殺したキャラクターは漏れなく死んでると思うので、ヨハンの腹心だったロベルトも漏れなく亡くなったと思ってます。

Q33:最終回について一言どうぞ。

　MONSTERを完結させてくれて有難うございます、とかそういう意図の質問じゃないと思いますが完結させてくれたことにまず感謝したいですね。あの終わり方も、読者に肩透かししてやろうとかではなく、並々ならぬ思いがあって辿り着いた展開なんだろうと思ってます。

　最終回の内容については私は考える余白があるあの終わり方を好ましいと感じてます。模範解答がないものを、漫画にしたかったという気概を感じるので･･･でも実兄は「俺はああいう終わり方は嫌いだ」とはっきり言ってましたね。それで良いんだと思います。

　両親もMONSTERを読んでますが母は「面白いけど難しかった」父は「最後のはテンマの白昼夢だったのか？」と若干釈然としていない様子だったので、答えをはっきり貰えなかったと感じる読者が多いのかもしれないなと思います。

Q34:結局、MONSTERは何だったと思いますか？

　誰か一人がモンスターなのではなく、人の悪意が人を怪物にしてしまうってことだと思っています。

　名前やアイデンティティを奪われる、善悪の判別がつかなくなる、そうなったときに人は怪物になってしまうということだと受け取りました。

Q35:MONSTERはホラーだと思いますか？サスペンスだと思いますか？

　ホラーではないと思います。ヨハンが病室で起き上がる見開きはジャンプスケアそのものだけど、人間に迫ったヒューマンサスペンスだと思います。

Q36:作中で最も印象に残った言葉を教えてください。

　キャラクターごとに好きな台詞がありますね。なので最もって難しい･･･私は一挙放送していたアニメを中途半端な回から見てハマったんですが、その回が「ペトラとシューマン」でした。

　テンマが「神様のように完璧に治せたらいいと思いながら、でもいつも患者さんを内心ガタガタ震えながら診てます」と言った台詞に掴まれ、Dr.シューマンの「大事な人はいつかいなくなるんだ」という台詞で「このアニメ全部観なきゃいけない気がする！」となったのを覚えています。

Q37:印象に残ったエピソードを教えて下さい。

　テンマの人柄がにじむ回は大体好きです。

　「老兵と少女」も好きですし、料理したり食事したりするエピソードは全部良いですね。

　図書館の寄贈セレモニーで人を撃った後震えが止まったテンマが、「自分はもう医者じゃない」と意気消沈していたところで出会い励まされるグリマーさん初登場回も好きです。

　エヴァとマルティンの回、その後のコーヒーショップでのシーンも。

　後はヨハンが言葉だけで人を追い込む具体的なやり方を見せたリヒャルトとの会話シーンとかも怖くて面白かったですね。潜在意識に入り込むの巧みすぎると思いました。

Q38:どうでも良いような些細なことだけれど、どうしても気になってしまう事はありますか？

　漫画の方になるんですが、テンマが車に轢かれてミランやベトナム人、トルコ人の方々にお世話になる「屋根の向こうまで」という回で、顔に絆創膏があったりなかったりするのが読んでいて気になりました。笑

　連載終盤は相当疲れてたと聞いたのでお疲れだったのかな？と思っています。

Q39:『もうひとつのMONSTER』は読みましたか？読んだ方は感想もどうぞ。

　かなり前になりますが読みました。時々読み返してます。テンマがヨハンを追うことに対して「どうしてそこまでするのか？」「生き返らせたとはいえ医者の行動範疇を越えてる」という意見を見かけたことがあるんですが、彼がどういう性格と気質を持っているかが詳しく書かれていて、疑問に感じた人へのアンサーが補足されてました。

　なのでテンマファンとしては嬉しいです。陸上部だったとか、好きな曲とかが知れましたし。ただヨハンがその後どうなったかが分かるわけではないし、作者が答え合わせをしてくれると思って読むと混迷が深まるのかなと思います。

　ルンゲ警部が語る「どうして無差別殺人を起こす人間がいるのか」という解説は一読の価値ありだと思います。後この本でもラストがジャンプスケア気味なのが面白かったです。面白いですが、怖くて執拗だなと笑ってしまいました。

　でもフィクションを現実だと思わせるバランス感覚がすごいなと思います。ヴェーバーさんその後どうなってしまったのか･･･

Q40:『MONSTER解体新書』を読んだことはありますか？

　竹内規和さんという方の本なら二冊持っているんですがそれのことかな。私が持ってるものとタイトルが違うようなのでまた別の本なのかもしれませんね。

Q41:『ダ・ヴィンチ』2002年4月号のMONSTER特集は読みましたか？

　偶然手に入れて今年読みました！

　浦沢先生のインタビューや、漫画家さん、アーティストの方の感想、後は心理学者や社会学者の方の感想も載っていました。

　ミステリー評論家がMONSTERと要素が似ている作品を紹介してくれてる特集も面白かったです。

Q42:最近、ビッグコミックオリジナルで連載の始まった『PLUTO』は読んでいますか？

　この質問が作られたのはPLUTOの連載が始まった2003年なんですね･･･20年後に質問に応えてるのヤバいですね。2023年、Netflixでアニメの配信始まっちゃってるよ。

　連載当時の2003年頃は浦沢先生を知らなかったと思います。受験勉強してた頃かもしれません。

Q43:ちなみに、MONSTER関連サイトを探してみたことはありますか？

　探して見つけても大体更新が止まっていたりしましたね･･･

　今は消えてしまったんですがMONSTERのアニメ公式サイトの作りがHTML感すごくて、初めて見た時に古き良き作りのサイト〜！と思った記憶があります。

Q44:おすすめのMONSTERサイトがありましたら、教えてください。

　今だとpixivになるのかな。pixivやTwitterでキーワード検索したら素敵なファンアートや色んな感想が読めます。

Q45:MONSTERにまつわるちょっとした自慢をお教え下さい。

　2016年の浦沢直樹展で浦沢先生がギターを弾きにいらして、その後壁にテンマを描いてくれるのを生で見たことですかね。上がりました。

　後はMONSTERのサイン色紙を譲ってもらえたことですね。大切にしています。

Q46:MONSTERを身近な人に勧めたことはありますか？出来ればその結果も教えてください。

　家族と友人に勧めました。友人二人に勧めて一人は漫画を最後まで読んでくれたんですが、感想は聞けてないままです。

　もう一人の友人は二日かけてアニメを全話観てくれて、その後感想を沢山話してくれました。本当に良い友達です。

　Twitterのスペースで最終巻だけ未読の方に勧めさせれもらったのも数に入れていいのかな。その後有意義な感想会ができたので、とてもいい思い出になっています。

Q47:「これがMONSTERのテーマソングだ！」と言える曲はありますか？

　個人的解釈で「これ！」と言えるものはないかも･･･やはりあの蓜島邦明さんのOPがテーマソングじゃないでしょうか。インスト曲ですがMONSTERが秘めるものを引き立ててくれてますよね。

　最初の方わざとリズムが乱れるのも怪物が足踏みしてるみたいで怖くて大好きです。

　後海外のAMVってネット文化が好きなんですが（アニメの映像を勝手に使用してるけど愛を感じるので･･･）その中で一番好きなのがこの動画ですね。

Q48:MONSTERは将来映像化されるそうです。あなたが希望する映像化の方法を教えてください。

　2016年くらいにギレルモ・デル・トロ監督が「MONSTERは水面下で動いてるよ」と言ってた気がするんですが、7年経ちましたね。

　映像化の権利はハリウッドから離れて、映画ではなくドラマシリーズで制作しようという話になってるようです。MONSTERとPlutoのアニメがNetflixで配信してるので、制作されるなら資本も配信もNetflixになりそうですね。

　個人的には映画よりドラマシリーズになる方が嬉しいです。ドイツとかチェコの風景を実写で観てみたいな～

　キャストは正直想像するのが怖いです。なので映像化が決まりキャストが発表されることがあって私がネットから消えたり、何も語らなければ受け入れられなかったんだなこの人と思ってください。

Q49:あったら絶対欲しいMONSTERグッズは？

　「テンマの救急手当セット」みたいな防災グッズが欲しいですね。ありそうで作られてないヨハンの手紙の文章を転写したマグとか。

　絶対ないけど小さいぬいぐるみとかも欲しいです。

Q50:最後に、MONSTERへの思いをご自由にどうぞ。

　こんなに一作品をディグる人間にしてくれて有難うございます。自分でも引くぐらい余計なこと考えてるなと思います。

　ずっと考えない期間があってもMONSTERを忘れ��る訳ではなく、MONSTERを軸に色んなことを見てるなとよく思うので、自分の中に一本道を敷いてくれたようなデカい存在です。

　後テンマという存在を生み出してくれたことに感謝してます！
