If you are an American artist/fan, change your pixiv account region! Because there's new censorship
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Number 5. If your drawing has no 'educational/scientific/artistic value' it won't be allowed to exist. These new censorship are absolute nonsense pushed by credit card company and conservative politicians. Fucking bonkers
It's the same thing when Tumblr banned NSFW and they promised that 'artistic nudity' will still be 'allowed'. I hope every purist on the internet realized that when they whine over anime fan art they are repeating what conservative billionaires and politician are pushing:
The death of art...

Pros and Antis in HotD and aSoIaF Fandom: the breakdown around grey storytelling
I think I know why TB people struggle so much for understanding why TG is liked by people and it’s because fandom discourse has been so rotted away by “pro shippers” and “anti shippers” discourse that we’ve entered into a puritanical view of consuming media.
They see the media you consume as a direct reflection of the type of person you are and thus the characters you like must be similar to who you are as a person.
To a certain extent I get it, looking at a broad portfolio of media consumption can reveal a bit about a person. For example, I consume a lot of horror media. You can discern that I like being scared and the adrenaline that comes from it. But that’s only in a safe controlled situation where I can turn off the tv or monitor when it gets too much. I don’t like haunted houses, being alone at night, or even the dark.
Media is a safe place to explore different sides of humanity in a controlled setting where the only thing at risk is our own enjoyment. People can find that they like things in media that they wouldn’t like in real life. But this distinction is lost on a lot of fandom puritans. To them, media consumption is a political act. You reaffirm that you are a “good person” by watching the “good shows” and rooting for the “good guys”. To look upon a morally complex character or even the villain with interest and sympathy is thus to condone and support every action that character will be written to take.
But this idea of assuming moral righteousness from the characters you support in media because even harder to understand and justify when applied to stories like HotD and aSoIaF where every character possesses both good and evil. So how does a puritan fan reaffirm their belief that they are morally good in a series such as these? The fan will assign the idea oh moral correctness and superiority to the characters they like. Any bad, morally questionable, or straight up evil act the character commits will be justified as righteous no matter how the story frames those actions to the audience. The same is applied to characters these fans do not like. Every bad, morally questionable, or evil action is amplified to become the main character trait while any good, just, or morally righteous act is off written as either an evil act in disguise or any good to come out of the act should be attributed to another character. Any harm committed again the character is then down played as not that bad or actually deserved.
In HotD and aSoIaF, this fandom Puritanism mainly affects female characters.
In aSoIaF, we have characters such as Dany and Arya being framed as the morally righteous and just while characters such as Catelyn and Sansa are painted as villains. Weirdly this does not apply to actual villainous female characters likes Cersei. This could be because the books and show are very clear that her actions are evil and cruel, puritan fans do not feel insecure liking her as they feel secure that the story and thus other fans know she is a bad person and won’t assume liking her means viewing her as a good person. Characters such as Margery Tyrell and Arianne Martell are viewed with more complexity than other female characters but I bet once they come into conflict with beloved female characters, they will be viewed as villainous.
In HotD we see the same thing happening. Puritan fans see Rhaenyra as the perfect hero with any negative action being just or not her fault while Alicent is painted as more evil than the step mother from Cinderella who, despite all evidence to the contrary, wanted to be queen and this deserves everything that she gets.
This is why so many people have to explain to puritan fans that liking characters like Sansa, Catelyn, Alicent, Aegon, or Aemond does not make one bastardphobic, a rape apologist, or anti feminist. I also think it explains why these fans can’t except that their favorite characters have done wrong and hurt people. They can’t accept criticism or critique of their favorite character because to them it’s not another person’s reading of a fictional character, it’s someone judging them on their morals.
Puritanical fans interlock their identity and sense of self with the characters they like and struggle to separate criticism of those characters as criticism of themselves as a person.

I need more JK fans to stop treating him like a fucking child. He got signed to Calvin Klein as both a jeans AND underwear ambassador, meaning yeah, there’s a good chance he could model the underwear too. Yet for some reason I’m seeing a lot of his fans hate that idea? Some even going as far as to say it would damage his image? Fuck off.
He’s already been sexualized to this point, what would it matter now if he modeled in some boxer briefs for a company that’s entirely known for its ad campaigns of people in the brands underwear? If JK didn’t wanna model being that exposed, he wouldn’t have signed with them under the label for jeans and underwear.
He was just on live folding a bunch CK gave him, hell don’t be shocked if that was his way of giving y’all a spoiler for what’s to come. Don’t drool over his abs and talk about how sexual he is and then get angry when it tips a point you now feel is ‘’too much’’. That’s HIS body, that’s HIS choice, either continue to drool over him or shut up.

maybe i’m an over-analytical freak, but the way 5sos have to constantly sanitize their sex jokes or language makes me fucking shrivel into myself. last night on ashton’s live, he was talking about how he couldn’t “say anything inappropriate” as if he isn’t a 29 year old man. and this is like a silly example, but they say things like this all the time. idk whose fault this is, whether it be the toxic twt fanbase constantly infantalizing them and making them relive their adolescence or if their management genuinely believes they’re more marketable as “family friendly,” but it is so fucking icky. they should be allowed to say and act like themselves on their livestreams. idk. like ??? they’re funny !!!

Forever lucky that my favorite blog and a whole bunch of other blogs I enjoy turned out to be fellow Celltw fans. Plus all the blogs I didn't know that well or at all beforehand but now when i see them in my notes or in the qsmp tag I find myself internally perking up at their presence. My brain is like: Hiiii fellow enjoyer :DD nice reblog I happened to notice on someone else's random unrelated post, good to see you alive!

Sometimes I leave my dash for the wilds of the fandom tag and regret it.
Tumblr media
(The hell of it is, I agree with the broader point OP was making -- that is, characters are complicated and stark good-and-evil thinking benefits no one. I just... like, would never bring fascism to fandom discourse.)

Hi Pia
Do you have any advice on how to deal with antis or fandom backlash?
I want to write about a pairing within my fandom but one of the characters is canonically very 'innocent', ie they're described as having a childlike personality/nature even tho they aren't actually a child. But other creators have been cancelled by the fandom for putting this character into sexual situations and I'm worried this will happen to me also if I write this story.
Any advice?
Hi anon!
So, some advice I can give:
Get really friendly with the block and mute buttons, wherever you are putting your fic. AO3 now has a block function, and also, you can delete any comment that doesn't feel right.
If you're super worried, lock the fic on AO3 so that only registered members can comment. It's almost the anons on AO3 who dogpile (same as anywhere) and it's harder to register multiple sock puppet accounts there. This will mean less views, but you can always unlock it down the track.
Mentally prepare in advance for what you will do to protect yourself if you do attract some antis / backlash. For example you might decide to release the fic as is and then decide to lock it down if you get negative attention. Don't leave any negative comments up on AO3 if you can help it, and don't indulge antis. 9 times out of 10 it's not even close to as bad as what you feared, and often it's not bad at all.
But when it gets bad, it's good to know that you're already prepared. If you need to, write down a list of emergency steps you'll take to deal with trolls (antis) and bullies (antis) and put it with the rest of your story so it's easy to find. This can include blocking, muting, reporting (remember - anything that threatens you as a person can be reported directly to AO3 and that person if they have a registered account generally experiences consequences for that, same on Tumblr), deleting comments without replying to them - deleting is a really underused resource on AO3 as far as I'm concerned, connect with the people who know who you are and love you for who you are, antis are good at attacking the person and not the fic, so at times like that, it's good to remember that there are people out there who like you as a person, and know you're not a terrible person because of some fiction you're writing.
It's worth keeping in mind that there will be people in your fandom who want fic of this character, even if they're quieter because they're scared of antis as well (I've noticed that people are less likely to comment or associate their usernames with certain fics in fandoms if antis are very active in that fandom, which is infuriating). But you are 100% not alone in wanting this content and feeling like reading this content, and you being brave enough to put it out there might also encourage other writers to be brave enough to put theirs out there as well!
I remember something kind of similar happened re: the Dragon Age fandom (though not quite as bad, because the proto-Fascist antis hadn't really come into their stride quite yet, but oof they were getting there), and a lot of folks dealt with it by just like, 'ignoring the children' and putting the content out there. Not all antis are children or teens, but a lot are. Not all antis are under-educated Americans who don't understand nuance (due to the aggressive and systematic de-education of US youths for like two decades now that you have to put actual effort in to overcome - it should be a crime imho), but a lot are. Not all antis are into filthy stuff themselves that they can't actually justify and that they feel secretly extremely ashamed of, but a lot are. And no antis have really solid science behind a single thing they're saying, which renders a lot of what they say as meaningless bleating noise informed by evangelist and right-wing and TERF rhetoric, even if they themselves are queer.
Treat them as you would treat a pornbot on Tumblr - just get rid of it. Most of what they have to say is utter nonsense, and the white noise doesn't deserve to be honoured, because it's toxic.

I don’t know how I’ve got onto anti-billy posts (I mean I do know, because they constantly occupy his fucking tag and obsess over everyone who likes him) but they are absolutely fucking vile. I feel like I should clean my eyes with a bleach for the amount of bullying and hateful behaviour they display. With the way they act you would think that Billy is comparable to fucking H*tler, not to mention the jabs at how other fans are ‘clearly’ racists and abusive because they like his character. Or how they lack media literacy? Is it me, or does that make no fucking sense? As far as I’m aware liking Hannibal doesn’t make you a human flesh connoisseur, liking Joker doesn’t make you a fucking crazy murderer clown, and liking Loki doesn’t make you a semi-genocidal demi-god. It’s fucking fiction, it doesn’t exist, liking someone doesn’t translate to being like that fucking person (it really should be a general motto of this fandom, because people forget or don’t understand that simple stupid fact).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of these examples just scream lack of media literacy, if not to go as far as to say lack of critical thinking skills. “Main character you are supposed to like” - so basically we are taking everything surface level, no deeper thoughts, no nothing? Just blindly guided by who you are supposed to like and who you are not supposed to like because show told you to do that?(even though it didn’t actually tell you shit, but go off) Are you able to form a single opinion that comes from your own thought process or do you just do everything someone else tells you to do?
Not to mention, fireworks and applause for a teenage, abused character to die a gruesome death after being literally mentally tortured and controlled by an inter-dimensional monster. You should get a Nobel Peace Price for your clear ability to empathise with anyone (I know, I know, you were not told to do that, it’s hard to form your own critical opinions). Just go around bullying an extremely fucking safe part of the fandom that does nothing wrong to anyone, and just posts their silly little stories and concept arts and protects other characters that are being bullied by this kind of toxic ST fans. What a puritan fucking moral warrior behaviour, absolutely vile.
