“Do you finally acknowledge your hubris? Despite your insistence that you’ve changed, you still refused help… You will surely fall to your own demise with charred wings if you keep up this charade… Do you still seek freedom? True salvation? Then I will help fly again with a pair of new wings… I am thou, thou art I… Rise above your torment and take flight once more!”
“Give me new wings, ICARUS!!”
So I decided to redo my old PT Maruki design and at long last... He's done! Old version can be seen here!
Here's a rough sketch of the full outfit! I took some inspiration from starrycosmicyuu's take on the old design. I tried there and the ends of the coat are meant to resemble feathers. I tried to make the staff look sharp so hopefully it's doable. I just feel like he would be more magic oriented than combat oriented since he considers himself a pacifist unless pushed.
Tumblr media
Anyhow, more notes/profile:
Codename: Adam (a reference to the Adam and Eve motif associated with him (that and Adam was casted out of paradise along with Eve so it still fits with what I’m going with here with this design))
Persona: Icarus (I personally felt like the story/myth fit Maruki pretty well, he flew too close and fell with his hubris but (unlike Icarus, who met his demise) that doesn’t mean he can’t be saved and redeemed)
I know people would often have him be all white and gold but… I couldn’t help but think that the black and gold is a good way to show that he’s symbolically a “fallen god” now along with fitting the story of Icarus still a bit.
Melee Weapon: His staff in canon, but probably modified more for battle. Helps with magic use too.
Ranged Weapon: Bow and arrows.
Specializes in Bless Magic along with healing.
His brooch was loosely inspired by Hawkmoth from Miraculous Ladybug and my bf's own input. The meaning behind a gold/yellow moth is apparently this:
Tumblr media
His 2nd tier Persona would be Asclepius, who was a renowned doctor/medical practitioner from Greek mythology and apparently associated with snakes as well (the Adam and Eve motif of his Palace).
His 3rd tier will be Vikare, Icarus' Etruscan name.
Stats (I’m gonna do a 1 to 10 thing. 1 for weakest, 10 for strongest. Idk why, it strangely helps me a bit more.):
Strength: 5
Magic: 10
Endurance: 4
Agility: 5
Luck: 7
Phew! All done! Hope you enjoy him!

I think some people miss the fact that the Phantom Thieves are playing right into Yaldabaoth's hands when they change people's hearts. They're basically proving that people need someone else to act for them and that people aren't willing to solve their own problems. Just look at how they end up sending their targets back into the depths of Mementos.
Don't get me wrong, the Thieves are doing good by freeing people from Yaldy's control and from their selfish distorted desires (which are just another form of control), but they are also showing that people are unwilling to free themselves from Yaldy's control on their own. When people don't free themselves, they only end up being imprisoned even further by society. That's why all the morally redeemable characters in the game change their own hearts, and that's why the Bad Ending is Akira deciding to keep society just as it is under Yaldy's control, with the Phantom Thieves as heroes who continue to change the hearts of individuals, but society as a whole is kept stagnant for eternity.
This is also why the public's support for the Thieves is so important in the final battle. Without their support, the Thieves couldn't have defeated Yaldy, because the public needed to show that they wanted their hearts changed, that they didn't want to be controlled after all. They all needed to show a will of rebellion against their oppressor or the Phantom Thieves would have just become the same thing Yaldabaoth was doing by removing their free will. Prior to fighting Yaldy the PT don't respect the agency of their targets, and they solve other people's problems without thinking about how that might affect the person they're saving. By defeating Yaldabaoth, they let go of that power and give control back to the individuals of society so they can start to change their own lives again. The public shouldn't and can't rely on Yaldabaoth to solve their problems, and they shouldn't and can't rely on the Phantom Thieves to solve their problems either.
And again, don't get me wrong, Persona 5 says that it is good and even necessary to get help from others, but if you really want to improve your life you need to act for yourself. If society is going to improve people need to take destiny into their own hands. Persona 5 is about finding hope even in the darkest circumstances by forging connections with other people and refusing to let society crush you under its heel. But the key to this all is that you must choose to fight against the cruelties of society, even if it seems impossible. Hope for change can be seen by finding belonging with others and working together to change society for the better. In the words of Morgana:
"Even if you feel that only darkness lies ahead...as long as you hold hands together...see it through as one...the world will never end!"

Gonna be honest: I am halfway through my second playthrough of P5R and I don't get the Akechi love in the fandom. No hate to anyone who loves him ofc, we all have different tastes, but

...deltarune-esque persona 5 au? especially with the Stuff with maruki?
ahhh i have mulled over how to answer this so much but i am just going to try. insert [orv-style monologue about about how even though no meaning will ever be translated completely from one person to another we still have to try] here
so i have not played deltarune yet, but to the best of my knowledge, kris, the protagonist, is a separate entity from the player. in additional, they are also aware they are being controlled.
i thought this would be an interesting thing to touch on in p5r, especially with the focus on control and power in the story. from corrupt teachers and government officials, to gods, to school counselors, there is a focus on choice/action being taken away and the characters rebelling against it.
i think it would be really interesting for akira to be somewhat aware there is something going on behind the scenes. especially with him thinking that shido is behind it, and then thinking its actually yaldaboath. think periodically having an "im being watched...." thought bubble pop up or a "something's wrong" as you play the game, and thinking its igor, or shido's goons. and he isnt wrong, but that feeling not going even when yaldaboth is defeated. and then maruki changed everything, so it must be his fault, right....?
and then another "i'm being watched" pop up, but. akira turns to face the screen:
Tumblr media
from here, dialogue options not popping up, like he's refusing to speak. the name you chose glitching, like he's trying to remember who he was before he transferred...
in the end, i think it would be interesting to end the game on having to let go of playing akira; a prompting for the player to take hold of their own life. you helped akira and the phantom thieves, and they're grateful, but it's time for everyone to go their separate ways.

My random fandom thought that popped into my brain during work: Royal's third semester being optional is the best sign I can think of that Maruki, while DEFINITELY having dubious and bad methods, really is trying to help people and not hurt them.

“Are you ok?” Ren can’t quite make Akechi’s face on the darkness of the room, only lit by the dim light of a distant lamppost that comes through the window, but he can hear the concern on his voice. It sounds strange on him.
“It was just a bad dream, sorry I woke you up.” His voice is still shaken from the nightmare, making him sound less convinced than he’d like. “I bet now you regret staying here instead of going back to the comfort of your own apartment where no-one would bother your sleep,” Ren tries to joke. Not that he believes Akechi will ask about his dream, but better brush it off just in case, he doesn’t want him to know he accepted Maruki’s deal even if it was just in a dream. However, Akechi doesn’t answer. Ren sees how he opens his mouth, as if he wants to say something, but closes it again in an almost imperceptible sigh. It almost looks like he doesn’t know what to do.
It’s not until he takes a hand to his eyes, trying to rub away an annoying itch, that Ren realizes why.
But Akechi can’t see it, can he? The room is almost in complete darkness, there’s no way he can see the tears on his eyes. Though the uncertainty Ren can guess in his posture, the way he won’t look away from him, his body slightly leaning forward, head tilted and a hand slowly closing into a fist between them as if he wasn’t sure whether to reach to him or not, says otherwise.
Scared, Ren tries to scoot back, to put some distance between them and hide in the darkness so Akechi can’t see his face, but his back is already against the wall. There’s no escape. Instead, he turns his head away from Akechi’s gaze and attempts to wipe away his tears, but no matter how much he brush, they just keep coming.
Why is he crying now of all times? He hasn’t cried in years, he doesn’t even remember the last time he cried in front of someone. He didn’t cry when he was sent to Tokyo, he didn’t cry when he was being tortured, he didn’t cry when he wasn't able to save the one person he wanted to save the most nor when that same person asked him to end his life once more only a few hours ago… so why now? It had been just a dream, a fantasy of his mind, or maybe Maruki’s last effort to persuade him, to show Ren the life he was throwing away, a life in an old café that felt more like home than his parents’ house ever did, surrounded by people who cared for him, his friends, his boyfriend… people who, just as in the dream, would hate him if he choose that path once they realized.
“Ren” Akechi’s voice is soft, softer than he ever thought possible. It only makes it harder not to whimper like the irrational little kid he’s being.
“I’m sorry,” is all he can say.
He hears Akechi sigh again before a hand falls on his shoulder. Ren cowers, trying to get away from the other boy, there may be no way to hide he’s crying now, but that doesn’t mean he’s willing to let anyone see him like this. Not even Akechi. However, his reaction only makes Akechi harden his grip and, before Ren has time to react, the detective is pulling him against himself, making Ren bury his head against his shoulder and awkwardly stroking his back.
“It’s ok.” Akechi says, each word echoing in his body.
Ren feels ashamed, being comforted by Akechi of all people. He is the one with a reason to cry, he is the one who will stop existing tomorrow, not Ren. Still, something breaks inside him with those words and the sobs he’s been trying to hold finally escape.
He doesn’t try to restrain himself anymore, instead he clings to Akechi’s shirt and lets his tears run free, wailing loudly, shaking, crying as he hasn’t cry since he was a child.
It’s like he’s crying for all the times he didn’t cry before, as if all the fears, regrets, anger, anxiety, pain, grief that he has been accumulating during the last year fought to finally get out, as if his body were too small for all of those emotions and had finally exploded.
He attempts to tell Akechi he hasn’t change his mind, that he’s not accepting Maruki’s deal as much as it pains him, but the only words that come out his mouth when the hiccups allow him are cracked up I’m sorrys. Yet, somehow, that seems to be enough for Akechi to understand.
And it hurts. Because Akechi knows him well enough to understand those hopeless sobs, to understand that he doesn’t want to be seen but needs the comfort of his hug. Because he had never felt so free, so seen, as he does when they’re together. Because, despite all of that, he’s still going to lose him again.
And he doesn’t know how he’ll be able to bear it.
Ren has no clue how much it takes him to run out of tears, it could have been hours, days, weeks even, for how exhausted he feels. The grief and pain haven’t disappeared, he doesn’t think they ever will, but they are lighter now, more bearable. Akechi is still holding him, and, even though it’s  probably selfish of him, Ren doesn’t pull apart. They’ll have to part ways in a few hours so he wants to keep Akechi as close as he can until that happens.
“I’m going to miss you."
“I’ll miss you too”

Also a fun game I like to play is “would Maruki approve of this coping mechanism” and I think Maruki would approve of leaving your reality behind and taking on the life of your dead self (basically what happens to Sumi but with more steps) but not the whole “taking it out on a teenager who’s just trying his best part.” Spider-Maruki would be like “yo why not construct a whole new reality” because again that’s basically third semester?
AGSHDJFJKF IT ALL COMES BACK TO P5! And I think you’re spot on w this idea. Man would love running away from problems, hate the idea of taking it out on a kid.

Was messing around on Befunky's collage maker and did a quick aesthetic board for PT Maruki (with a Persona based on Icarus) to compliment my Odile Sumi.

I absolutely adore the human chihuahua that is Akechi but the fact that P5R tries to make some sort of difficult choice out of bringing everything back to normal vs saving his life is so funny.
This dude killed a fuckton lot of people because of his daddy issues and inferiority complex. He tried to kill Ren in three separate instances and got him brutalized and drugged by the police. He's directly involved in the murder of two of his friends' parents, and wholly unrepetant as well. Nobody in Ren's friend group even remotely likes him because he's a thoroughly unpleasant and edgy dumbfuck.
Doc, not only is his life not enough to get me to raise the Obvious Bad Ending Flag, I'd say that at this point me strangling him with my bare hands would just be us getting even.

Persona 5/R both failed it’s central theme. It’s literally wearing the aesthetic of rebellion, fuck the system but not following up on it. I played royal and I cannot believe in order to get the true ending, I have to reject the antagonist.
