Into the unknown
Tumblr media
A Shawn/Gus moodboard for the Psych Creation Fest using the prompt "the characters go on a road trip"
It's the week after graduation, and Shawn and Gus have plans- Shawn’s working at the ice cream shop while Gus is doing work for his father; both of them saving up for their futures. In a few short months, Gus will be off to college and Shawn will be off to… who knows where.
But all that changes when Gus begs Shawn to join him on an impromptu road trip. Shawn’s never been one to turn down an adventure, especially not when straight-laced Gus is the one insisting on it.
With the help of a ‘borrowed’ car, the two set off into the unknown, where they’ll learn more about themselves than they ever bargained for.

Down the Gopher's Vertical Tunnel
Fandom: Psych 2006
Word Count: 1,062
Summary: Shawn in Alice's Wonderland
A/N: For Psych creation fest! Prompts used: Hunted, too many teeth, dazed and confused
AO3 Link
Shawn rushed through the open field, jumping over beds of snapdragons snapping at his feet. His lungs burned as he breathed in, a piercing pain in his gut awakened, making him clench his teeth in response. Shawn runs and runs, the moon making an effort to barely light his path, it’s crooked grin mocking him.
He comes to an abrupt stop before a sunflower field, each flower twice as tall as himself. Reluctant to step into the flowers, he peaked in first, putting his hand on the stem closest to him, his heavy breath making itself known in the cool air.
The dim light of the moon didn’t reach between the sunflowers, it was dark inside, but the ground beneath him was barren, any grass that once grew was long dead, meaning this trail was often used. As Shawn thought of his choices, he heard the sound of metal armour hitting metal armour, the sound of playing cards cutting through the air. They were getting closer, he had no choice but to step inside.
As soon as Shawn stepped inside, everything grew quiet, the flowers acting as walls, covering him from any danger outside. Shawn followed the path and trailed his hand across the green stems, they were his guides in the dark. There was a twist here, a turn there, and then Shawn reached a fork, he had to decide between going left or right. It seemed easy enough, he just followed the light coming from deep inside of the left path. As he got closer to the light he noticed the stems had changed colour to a more bluer hue.
He reached the source of the light, a small lantern with a blue flame inside, it sat atop a small round table decorated with two little white teacups, a red rose on each. There was a teapot beside the lantern, steam pouring from its spout.
Shawn’s eyebrows creased in confusion, how was there fresh brewed tea in the middle of a field? Yet again, how were playing cards sentient and hunting him down. Shawn watched the steam swirl into the air, it mesmerised him.
Entranced him.
“No.”
“Oh c’mon, Gus.”
“I said no, Shawn.” Gus shook his head violently in objection.
“It’s just a hole, Gus, it’s not gonna hurt you.” Shawn pointed at the dark hole in front of the tree trunk.
“I’m not taking any chances at getting bit in the face by an angry gopher.”
Shawn clicked his tongue and hit Gus in his stomach before bravely kneeling in front of the hole. He’d become curious after something shiny had caught his eye as him and Gus walked by.
The hole in the dirt was deep and dark, almost never ending, it was like nothing he’d ever seen before, roots blocked his view any deeper into the vertical tunnel. Shawn leaned in close, his fingers gripping tight at the dirt and damp grass.
His hand slipped.
In he went, straight down the gopher’s hole.
“Shawn!”
Gus’s voice startled Shawn from his trance, its echo bouncing around Shawn’s head. Shawn took a deep breath, wiped his sweaty palms on his dirtied jeans and continued on his way.
Nothing about this was normal, nothing about any of this was right. It was all wrong, all Shawn wanted to do that morning was go on a tranquil walk with Gus, possibly get some snacks along the way, but instead he’d ended up here.
He was afraid, lost in some bizarre land where everything that wasn’t supposed to be alive, was and tried to talk to him. And if it wasn’t trying to have a polite conversation, it was trying to kill him. Like the very lovely gopher he did end up seeing as soon as he stopped falling. It had simply stared at Shawn until he took a step forward and the creature growled at him, revealing unnatural rows of teeth. Shawn had stayed frozen and the thing just took off, running into the forest nearby.
Shawn stopped and paid attention to his surroundings, he had reached another fork, this time he would take the right path. With each step he grew more nervous, not too sure what would come next.
It was the little table and tea set again, except, the lantern’s light was dying out, only a little speck of blue was left dancing around the wick of the candle inside, the tea seemed to have grown cold. Shawn’s head started working furiously to remember if he really had taken the right path, he had. So how had he ended up here?
Shawn picked up one of the cups and looked inside, a ring of brown stained the white porcelain. He examined the exterior, flipping the fragile cup in his hands. The red rose that had adorned the outside was now white, with only a black outline allowing him to tell the rose was even there in the first place.
Shawn huffed out in frustration as he put the cup down. This place was messing with his head, he needed to get out, and fast. He ran forward, his feet heavy, leaving a print with each step he took. Shawn kept at a slow enough pace so he wouldn't hurt himself in the dark. The flowers around him had begun to make him feel stuffy, trapped. The sound of the air ruffling through the petals above made Shawn feel as if the petals themselves were looking down at him, giggling at him and his confusion.
Shawn saw a light once more at the end of the flower tunnel, luckily this time, he had no choice to make and only had to move forward. He picked up the pace, running straight to the exit.
He burst into the open field, the wind hit his face, immediately cooling him down. He took a deep breath in, letting himself be touched by the moon’s light. That’s when he heard it, the sound of metal hitting metal. The sound of the playing cards folding in on themselves.
Shawn opened his eyes, there was a line of cards, each branded with
a red heart and number, all pointing spears at him, trapping him in like an animal.
Shawn lifted his hands, his heart thumping behind his ribs. “I have a question,” he said nervously, “do I get a prize for getting a flush?

💕 self-love time! talk about which ones of YOUR creations (edits, artworks, fanfics) you like the most then send to other creators to do the same 💕
This is suuuucccchhh a hard question!
Going to have to go with this one. Not 100% sure I'd say its my absolute favorite but its definitely in the Top 5.
The Eros/Psyche myth has long been one of my favorites, so adapting it to Codywan was soooo much fun for me. The story itself, determining who to use as side characters...I enjoyed it all so much. Plus, I commissioned art for it that turned out gorgeous and I love it so, so much.
I enjoyed it so much, I wrote a couple side fics for it and a follow up smutty oneshot too, lol

PITCH:
The Left Hand Of Carnage
What is it — a hard R action horror contemporary fantasy film that is a modern day Frankenstein meets The Crow.
PREMISE:
Set in Veracruz, this macabre and almost-steampunk tale follows a young man with a slight face deformity named Jorge who is tragically killed in a store robbery gone horribly wrong and later on finds himself resurrected as a large, imposing, horrific monstrosity that is the creation of the U.S. Government as part of a super soldier program to do their bidding.
But unfortunately for them, Jorge still retains all of his memories and is horrified at the monster they've turned him into, leading to him escaping and forced to hide out in the deepest, darkest and seediest parts of Veracruz where in facing his own moral ambiguity, becomes a violent vigilante cleaning the streets all the while seeking revenge on the people who made him this way.
Tumblr media
Notes/Details/Trivia:
• The main character, Jorge Ramirez, starts off as a lanky, quiet, struggling but intelligent, well-read, highly organized guy in his late 20s who is slightly deformed on the left side of his face from a childhood accident where he was dropped on concrete as a baby. He lives with his mother, younger sister and pet dog at an apartment and where we are now with him at this point is that he's currently planning on proposing to his long-time girlfriend who is handicapped with one leg. It makes what happens to him all the more tragic and with them it's done in an almost mundane way where there's only an element of quirk to them that is completely subdued when it's clearly necessary.
• Other characters are Spaz, a cynical and sarcastic homeless man that Jorge befriends as a monster, Daniel Henrick, a U.S. general who is running the program and will do anything to stay on top, Rico Torres, a sleazy and deranged mortician wanting to live forever and experience life in his own hedonistic way and Lillian Marshall, a former U.S. reporter investigating the mysterious disappearance of her brother in Veracruz.
• When I say it will be a hard R, I really do mean it. The R rating will allow us to go to places the only way this story can ever actually work. The violence in this will be quite graphic in that it's brutal and gory but it all makes sense in the context of everything. Right down to the fact that the title is a direct reference to Jorge's now massive and monstrous left arm that is now his main indestructible weapon, throats are ripped open, heads are smashed apart, there's plenty of fun and enjoyable blood squibs to go around.
• There is however several lighter aspects and moments to help balance out the darker elements so they help the latter stand out more and hit harder. You need levity for contrast as well as contrast in general, regular Veracruz in the film is in that visually distinct Guillermo Del Toro-esque look that you'd see in movies of his like Cronos and The Devil's Backbone for example. Meanwhile, all of the stuff in the lower, crime ridden parts of Veracruz where Jorge is forced to hide out and later cleans up the streets of the filth that inhabits it are very grimy looking and feel like something more gritty out of something like either John Rambo or Blade II again for example.
• As for the creature designs, almost all of them especially Jorge are heavily inspired by or influenced by Bernie Wrightson's incredible and visually striking grotesque design of Frankenstein. That exact type of heavy, gruesome and intimidating size and psyche while at the same time having the ability to emote and show clear and genuine emotion through it especially with the clear and genuine sympathy you're supposed to have and actually feel for Jorge. Jorge is not a monster nor does he want to be a monster, it's just that he's been given a cruel fate that changes him and his life forever.
• The movie won't just be some dark R rated horror-fest, it will actually have a lot more heart to it than you think with its lead and his relationship with his loved ones even after he's been brought back to life from the dead and turned into something else entirely. That heart is what helps adds to this new twisted tale.
• One thing that will make it stand-out from any other Frankenstein or at least Frankenstein-related productions is that —
It won't have a happy ending but in a very unexpected and unconventional way that you usually see in horror anthologies.
[SPOILER ALERT]
There's a huge and genuine moment of victory where our main protagonist and the ones by his side actually win against the odds and come out on top with Jorge being given a genuine bittersweet end to his character....
However, then when all seems as well as can be and I don't know "the characters walk off into the sunset" or something like that, an extra thing happens immediately after when the coast is clear that goes either "Nope!" or "...Or Maybe Not!"
All in all with an effective and memorable final image that's just as striking to end it on with that. The evil the characters defeated is shown to still be alive and will return.
And yet that's not the half of it even....
[MAJOR SPOILERS HERE]
Once the striking final image happens revealing it's unfortunately not a happily ever after after all, it dissolves and turns into an animated campfire with a female voice then saying ".... and that's the end".
It pans up slowly to reveal none other than two more-than-familiar characters sitting together arm in arm by the campfire —
It's Mikasa Ackerman and Historia Reiss.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's revealed right then and there that the entire film was a campfire horror story (or was it, damn) being told by Mikasa to Historia.
Without directly stating it, it's shown that this takes place approximately three years after the series finale to Attack On Titan - "The Final Chapters - Part 2" - and that both Mikasa and Historia are now a romantic couple.
Historia is rather shocked by the story as Mikasa then breaks seriousness and starts toying around with her.
After a while, the two decide to call it a night and head back home as Mikasa is about to tell Historia something or rather show something to her as well when she ultimately decides not to and jokingly says "You probably wouldn't believe me even if I told you.... as cliche as it is to say".
The two walk off, holding each other, as Mikasa throws something off behind her as they walk away.
It's an important object from the story or film, revealing that the story wasn't a story at all and that what we saw actually happened.
Tumblr media
And as an added bonus but not only will their butts jiggle a little when they walk off together but Trina Nishimura and Bryn Apprill will reprise their roles as Mikasa and Historia from the FUNimation English Dub.
• Now as for who directs it or helms it — Guillermo Del Toro and maybe, just maybe with a screenplay by Frank Darabont. I can't think of anyone more ideally suited for this job more than Guillermo Del Toro and maybe this will give Frank Darabont the chance to do Frankenstein right after his script was butchered with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994).
So what do you think?

Listed: Jeffrey Alexander
Tumblr media
Jeffrey Alexander is a fixture in a free-wheeling, Grateful Dead-loving, guitar jam underground, a founder of the Iditarod and Black Forest/Black Sea and a sometime member of Jackie O Motherfucker. His Direwolves splice acid folk with a buzzing, humming motoric-ness that edges near Stereolab, but his latest band, the Heavy Lidders, is pure transcendental pleasure. In her review, Jennifer Kelly noted that, “These songs take their time to loosen and relax, pursuing repetitive vamps until the edges melt away and the hard colors swirl into pastels.” Alexander is also a DJ and here he lists some of the music he spins for listeners.
For this Listed, I decided to run down some of the bootlegs and quirky things that I often play on my radio show — hope you dig it. I started doing radio back in college in the 1980s, where I was also the record librarian. The archives at the station opened me up to a myriad of sounds and new zones. Radio for me is like a new mixtape — not knowing what is going to come next… or waiting for the next mic break to try and find out the name of that killer song they played 15 minutes ago. The mystery of it all is still exciting, like remnants of pre-internet music fandom when we searched through record stores, made lists from music magazines and traded tapes. I had a spell as a commercial FM DJ on WRNR in Maryland in the 1990s, but it wasn’t until moving to San Francisco that I started my own program called Pome Pome Tones. PPT currently broadcasts Wednesdays 7-9pm Central fortnightly on www.dunebuggyradio.com. Podcasts are up at www.mixcloud.com/dwlvs.
Fairport Convention — Reno Nevada — April 27, 1968
youtube
Recorded live on the French TV program Bouton Rouge. Brooke Sietinsons of The Espers turned me on this this when we were VHS tape trading in 2000 and I’ve been retreating to it every so often for 20 years. This is Fairport at their most delightfully blinding San Francisco ballroom jamming free flight. It’s just so fucking good. I love the crisp dual vocals of Judy Dyble and Ian Matthews, I especially love that they both sit down and look so bored during the guitar jam out. Especially Judy, just like a Donna Jean icy stare. But the jam out is super nice too — modal jazzy freak-outs, some of Richard Thompson’s best ever captured on video. This takes the most boring song from my favorite Richard and Mimi Farina album to incredible new zones. I also tend to play a lot of Ian Matthews’ early 1970s records on my radio show, as well. Such a pure voice and perfect ringwear rock vibes.
The Smiths — How Soon Is Now? (Chopped + Screwed)
youtube
The chopped + screwed style coming out of Houston, TX in the late 1990s/early 2000s is so fascinating. Full-on Robitussin-fueled shamanism, it’s like the modern-day version of dub. There are so many examples of this across the spectrum, but this 10-minute chopped version of The Smiths takes the cake — probably because 16-year-old me in 1984 sat on the floor listening to the original version of this over and over again, studying the gatefold. But this version is so much better. Thank you Scobed + Robed.
I’m Still In Love With You (Alton Ellis, Sean Paul)
youtube
Althea + Donna’s Uptown Top Ranking is one of my all-time favorite songs, and one of John Peel’s as well. A well-worn Jamaican riddim starting with Alton Ellis in 1967 and made famous again by Marcia Aitken in 1977. DJ Algoriddim has expertly mixed together a boat load of these variations here and it’s a killer 30-minute jam.
Jon Rose – Paganini’s Last Testimony
youtube
When things get autumnal each year, I gear up for a spooky edition of my radio show. One of my favorites featured this Jon Rose piece which he originally broadcast on ABC, Australia in 1988. It’s an amazing sinister collage of bible-belt radio bits, demonic violin, and Rose reciting devilish text from Paganini’s own letters. The CD is long out of print but you can hear the entire 57 minutes of this glorious creation on an old episode of Pome Pome Tones here.
10cc — I’m Not In Love 1975 Disco Purrfection Version
youtube
12-minute remix version of a favorite song from my early childhood — unbelievably smooth mix by DJ Disco Cat. Read the comments on the YouTube post for the full mix backstory. Purrfect.
Sun Ra Arkestra — at Victoria Theater, San Francisco California — Aug 3, 2013
youtube
I’ve been super fortunate to experience the live Arkestra a handful of times, and this set from 2013 simply floored me. They completely consumed that old ratty theater space with their magical floating power.
Dire Wolves — at Festival of Endless Gratitude, Copenhagen Denmark — Sep 13, 2019
youtube
Live DWLVS ! Yeah, I play my own music on my radio show all the time, somebody has to. This is a short rough audience clip — the proper audio of the whole set was released on LP by Feeding Tube / Cardinal Fuzz with a fabulous poster.
Flow & Heady by Dire Wolves Just Exactly Perfect Sisters Band
Copenhagen 2019 was the last time I saw these DWLVS bandmates in person, but we have plans to meet up again at the Milwaukee Psych Fest November 19-20, 2021, unless ya all spreadnecks shut it down.
Chuck Brown and The Junkyard Band — at Wilmer’s Park, Brandywine Maryland — Sep 19, 1989
youtube
I grew up in Baltimore and spent a lot of time going to punk and hippie shows in DC (old 9:30, DC space) in the 1980s, but Wilmer’s Park in southern MD was totally the place. All-day and night go-go shows, mini festivals with overnight camping, shows from Hot Tuna, Zero, Allmans, Root Boy Slim (!!!) and some of the best BBQ I’ve eaten, oh man. There was a lot of crossover of punk/funk/crunchy scenes back then, I loved it all. I went to a lot of Trouble Funk gigs, but this was the only time I witnessed the legendary Chuck Brown.
Alice Coltrane — at Palace of Culture, Warsaw Poland — Oct 23, 1987
youtube
Harp solo during her appearance at the Jazz Jamboree festival in 1987. Perfect, transportive.
Bardo Pond — What Are Their Names?
youtube
Probably the greatest band of the last 30 years covering one of my absolute favorite David Crosby songs, what could be better? I curated this Terrastock festival in Providence RI in 2006 and assembled a CD compilation of some of the performers for a micro release on the label I used operate called Secret Eye. The original features Jerry Garcia, Neil Young, Phil Lesh (what an amazing LP!) and this Bardo version somehow channels that essence in a slow fried perfect hash jar tempo.

My 2019 Blog Review
Today's the last day of 2019, so I thought it would be fun to dig through my archive and reflect on my blog activity over the past year. I am doing this on my phone but once I have access to a computer again, I'll put this all under a cut. I just can't do it on my phone.
Jan 2019
- Tumblr's background color changed and apparently I'm the only one who liked the change.
- Kingdom Hearts 3 release -- of course, this was a huge thing in my blog at the time. Afterall, I'd only been waiting 15 years for this game. And while I definitely had problems with the game, it also had some very memorable moments that I loved...like Sora punching Davey Jones (I never ever want to forget that moment).
- I began my adventure of learning Japanese. I'm doing pretty good so far.
- The Mummy (Brendon Fraser) appreciation. Occamshipper apparently doesn't like these movies but I love them. I met some great people because I told occamshipper that whereas they didn't like The Mummy Returns, it is in fact one of my favorite all time movies.
- Lots of rambling about my love for Lucy Heartfilia and the Nalu ship from Fairy Tail.
Feb 2019
- BoA Appreciation. I love K-Pop and BoA is one of my all time favs.
- The Vic Micnogna scandal. Honestly, I don't really care about what's going on with the trial, what bothers me is the stain that was left on Funimation because of it. The voice actors really alienated the fanbase in this scandal and I didn't like that.
- Power Rangers appreciation. I love Power Rangers and unironically, too. My favorite power ranger is Adam from Mighty Morphin.
- Within Temptation's new Resist Album dropped and I loved it. I love these epic stories they tell with their albums and the vibes they give.
- I watched the Mythica franchise and my appreciation affair for Zombie Girl began.
- Ronon/Keller appreciation. I loved this pairing so much and I'm super sad the show never did more with them.
- Legacies Reviews. Apparently people find me funny? I have a sense of humor that people enjoy?
Mar 2019
- Emily Bett Rickards revealed she would not be on Arrow for its final season. I was really depressed a out that and I got a lot of hate from comic book fans for daring to say that I like the character of Felicity Smoak.
- Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles appreciation. One of my favorite anime/manga of all time.
- I was a victim of credit card fraud because of Creation Entertainment and then they tried to deny they were at fault despite hundreds of their customers reporting credit card fraud all at the same time. They eventually retracted their statement but because of this, I will probably never go to a Creation convention again. They're way overpriced and I certainly will not entrust my important info to them again.
Apr 2019
- Shadowhunters final season started airing and they went from irritating to just plain boring. Seriously, the season's biggest crime isn't how misogynist and racist it was, it was that it was completely nonsensical and boring for me.
- The release of Taylor Swift's and Brendon Urie's collab of ME! and I seem to be the only one that seems to legitimately love that song (even the "spelling is fun" part, RIP you beautiful lyric, alas, you were too good and pure to last in this hateful unfunny world of judgemental culture).
- The X Family appreciation. This is one of my favorite Taiwanese dramas and definitely my favorite series in the KO franchise.
- I broke up with the main SPN meta community (otherwise known as the Positive Police). We just didn't see eye-to-eye. I didn't appreciate them lording over the fandom telling people what they should and should not ship, telling people what they should and should not like...and they didn't appreciate me saying so. Lots of blocking went on and I'm still eternally sorry for the people that got blocked by these big fish because they simply liked my posts.
May 2019
- Game of Thrones crappy ending. What is there to really say about it? It was terrible and misogynist AF.
- Ezra appreciation from the Natural Oneders TFS at the Table D&D campaign. Ezra Lockwood was my favorite character and I'm not okay with how he was written out of the campaign.
- I was quite angry about Dean destroying Chuck's guitar like Dean was a 5-year-old child angry that he didn't get his way (seriously, Dean needs to be sent to time-out).
Jun 2019
- Quicksilver and Dadneto meta commentary from FOX 's X-Men franchise. So much lost potential there, unfortunately (thanks, Dark Phoenix).
- Orca appreciation. They're beautiful, majestic creatures and I love them, they might be my spirit animal.
- Someone unfollowed me because I wasn't giving enough attention to real-world problems. Essentially, I wasn't woke enough I guess. But I'm sorry, if I want to feel all righteous and justicey, I'll watch the news. Social justice and politics are not primary focuses of this blog.
- Godzilla King of Monsters was fantastic.
- Chuck TV Series appreciation. I love this show and I miss it dearly.
Jul 2019
- Veronica Mars Season 4 discourse. Essentially I hate what happened to Logan and what it means for Veronica's character moving forward.
- Played Love Island The Game and had way more fun than I probably rightfully should've had.
Aug 2019
- Re-watched Sailor Moon and then watched Sailor Moon Crystal. Both shows are so much fun. Plus, I love Sailor Jupiter. I love Jupiter's personality and her power aesthetic is badass to match her personality.
- Taylor Swift's Lover album dropped. I might be in the minority but it actually ranks pretty low on my list of Taylor Swift albums.
- Skillet's Victorious album dropped a d ot was a huge disappointment for me.
- I found watermelon to be my new favorite post-workout snack.
Sep 2019
- I watched The Untamed and I absolutely adore this show. I started watching more chinese dramas because of this show. And whereas I haven't found something I enjoyed quite as much from the chinese drama list, I've still greatly enjoyed a lit of the shows...but they still have nothing on The Untamed. The Untamed is just so good.
- Lover Fest was announced. And it was real shady the dealings that were going on with this. It actually kind of made me wary of actually wanting to see Taylor live.
Oct 2019
- I began the Korean drama, Extra-Ordinary You. I haven't finished it yet, but I plan to. I wanted to wait until the entire series was done airing. It does really interesting things with tropes and I greatly enjoy this show and can't wait to to return to it.
- Sherlolly appreciation. Rediscovered my love for the Sherlock/Molly ship from Sherlock.
-Leverage appreciation. Absolutely fantastic show. Highly recommend it.
Nov 2019
-Psych tv series appreciation. Another one of my favorite shows of all time.
- I wrote a Dean Winchester endgame meta. It was fun.
Dec 2019
- Kamen Rider Den-O appreciation. My favorite from the Kamen Rider franchise. I've been re-watching it and it's so much fun. Sato Takeru is amazing in it and the fact that this one of his first acting jobs and he's able to pull off doing so many different characters is seriously amazing.
- SPN finally brought us an angel/vessel dynamic in the form of Adam and Michael and it was amazing.
- The Jumanji re-make appreciation. I love it and The Next Level is just as good as its predecessor and I'm anxiously awaiting the next film in the franchise.
- My thoughts on why I'm single. Mainly because I'm lazy and I just don't feel like doing through all of the work involved in dating.
There you have it. That's 2019 for me. It had its ups and its downs but blog wise, I think I had a pretty good year.

Frayle Reveals New Single for Women of Doom
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Art by Lara Subterranean
You may have heard the buzz about 'Women of Doom' (2020), a ten-band project designed to put a spotlight on the hard-gigging female artists of the heavy underground.
Focusing on female artists and industry professionals at every stage of the creation and and production process, Women of Doom features exclusive songs from Frayle, Amy Tung of Year of the Cobra, Mel from Royal Thunder, Heavy Temple, The Otolith (new band comprised of four fifths of SubRosa), and more, along with art/design by Lara Subterranean, mastering by Jett Galindo, and vinyl production by the largely female team at Furnace Manufacturing.
Having soaked in the first single by The Otolith, Doomed & Stoned is pleased to give you yet another window into Women of Doom, coming out April 10th on Blues Funeral Recordings and Desert Records on multiple colors of limited edition vinyl (pre-order here or here).
This may be my personal favorite of the lot, too -- but perhaps I'm a little biased having had Frayle recently perform at Chicago Doomed & Stoned Fest and Ohio Doomed & Stoned Fest just a few months back. It may also be my most treasured track from the FRAYLE discography. "Marrow" establishes a sure and steady march-like beat, with darkly angelic singing luring us to wherever on heaven, earth, or the underworld this siren song is beckoning.
Tumblr media
Speaking of which, Doomed & Stoned reached out for comment to Frayle frontwoman Gwyn Strang, asking about her contribution to this stellar compilation:
How did you come to choose or write this particular song for the Women of Doom project, especially when you must have been working on your album at the same time?
We wrote this song specifically for Women of Doom while we were recording '1692' (2020). I really wanted this to have an empowerment theme and message to it.
What can you tell us about your track?
I wanted to write a song about empowerment. We do so many different things every day. Sometimes without thanks or appreciation. ”Marrow“ is about recognizing that you have everything inside you to take care of yourself and saying thank you for everything you do.
If the goal of Women of Doom was to highlight and celebrate the impact of female artists on heavy music, did you feel like you were making a statement by being part of it?
I think Women of Doom has given an outlet to the female artists in the genre to have their own singular voice and to come together and make something larger than each of us separately.
And now let Gwen's dreamlike vocals whisper sweet nothings to calm your spirit during these uncertain times as Doomed & Stoned brings you the world premiere of "Marrow" by Frayle. Warning: this one will burrow deep into your psyche like a rabid earworm!
Give ear...

New from Robert Daniels on 812 Film Reviews: AFI Fest [Reviews]: The Cave, Alan Pakula: Going for Truth, and Desert One
It wasn’t my intention, but at AFI Fest: with films examining Black love, injustice, and outer space—I discovered three documentaries about grief, each occurring in the space of three separate decades. These films demonstrate AFI Fest’s recommitment to critical documentary filmmaking, and they show us at our best, even when we’re usually at our worst.
Tumblr media
Nosocomephobia: the fear of hospitals, isn’t uncommon. A dread seeps into the psyche: What could go wrong? But I doubt if many have visited the doctor’s office with fear of a bomb dropping over their heads—knowing they’d have to seek shelter in a series of claustrophobically constructed caves. Not to belittle such anxiety, but they do in Syria. The Last Men in Aleppo filmmaker Feras Fayyad returns with a harrowing story of a team of doctors who represent Syria’s last line of medical defense in The Cave.
While much of Eastern Ghouta has evacuated, amongst the destruction Dr. Amani Ballour and her colleagues hold firm. Because of such, they’re constantly inundated with shredded bodies—victims of the bombing campaign in the country. With limited supplies, they’re often left without answers. Instead, they must adapt and perform at their best. When they lack anesthesia, they use classical music to calm patients during invasive operations. When they dine, the doctors eat popcorn and try to imagine it’s cake instead.
As a woman, Dr. Ballour is constantly questioned by her male patients and even her father through his voicemails: pleading with her to return home and to her garden. She courageously leads this team, holding them together amongst a torn apart terrain of medical emergencies. In the face of war, the religious power structure has been upended: women aren’t stuck to tend the house. The team must also contend with their own PTSD and frayed nerves. Whenever a war plane buzzes overhead, they naturally duck. Sometimes they have a gallow’s humor about the perilous affair, but they’re scared. And yet everyday they return to work, even when they’re unsure if they’re making a difference.
Their powerlessness stems from taking shelter in the subterranean web of caves whenever a war plane flies dangerously close. It’s their only defense. And when Russians turn to chemical warfare, the doctors have even less answers. In a tidy 95 minutes, Fayyad demonstrates why he’s one of the most important documentarians of his generation, recording a tragedy that the world would rather look away from. The Cave like the region, shouldn’t be ignored.
Tumblr media
Grief never truly stops, not for those left behind. Harrison Ford can barely form words, squinting away tears when speaking about his friend Alan Pakula. The famed producer and director who shaped works like To Kill a Mockingbird, Sophie’s Choice, Klute, The Parallax View, and All the President’s Men—died suddenly in 1998 when a metal pipe on the Long Island Expressway broke loose and pierced through his windshield. The freakish accident left a cavernous creative hole for loved ones and admirers like Matthew Miele. As a tribute, Miele creates a loving eulogy for the famed director in his poignant documentary Alan Pakula: Going for Truth.
Initially, Going for Truth diagrams the life and personality of Pakula. In a scene like the 1970’s, made up of celebrity auteurs like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Brian DePalma—whose names mean as much on the marquee as their actors—the Sophie’s Choice filmmaker didn’t seek the limelight. Many wouldn’t recognize Pakula if they were sitting beside him. And yet, he directed and produced immaculately fashioned pictures. He also crafted incredible barrier-breaking roles for women, taking a keen interest in developing fully realized female characters. Scores of former friends and associates share memories pertaining to the director, like Jane Fonda, Alec Baldwin, Jane Alexander, Jeff Bridges, Dustin Hoffman, and the aforementioned Ford. Fonda in particular credited Pakula with her incredible performance in Klute.
Each eclectic figure demonstrates the enormous impact the beloved director had on them personally and creatively. Furthermore, interviews with his relatives also shape the emotional tenor: describing how Pakula diverted from sports and more “manly” pursuits condoned by his father, to a life in art. His widow Hannah Boorstin and stepchildren also recount personal remembrances of him too.
And while Going for the Truth certainly serves as a tribute to the legendary director, when employing archival interviews, the documentary becomes a masterclass. With the central takeaway being: filmmakers don’t make movies as Pakula did anymore. They often over-cut when editing, lacking the patience for the inherent drama and emotion of the scene to evolve. The internal psychology of characters rarely flourish in today’s pictures, but they did in his. Part of such is due to Pakula’s unique style, his personal passion for psychology: his hunt for the cinematic. In a discourse taking apart what constitutes cinema, Alan Pakula: Going for Truth is a necessary balm, a touching memorialization of a visionary talent.

On Nov 4, 1979, the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam’s Line stormed the US Embassy in Tehran taking fifty-two hostages. Throughout America’s history, there exists arcs of unbridled confidence and a crisis of conscious: the difference between the idealized visions of World War II and the tragedy of Vietnam. The Iran-hostage crisis marks the latter, and led to one of the most audacious rescue attempts in United States history. The legendary director of Harlan County, USA and Miss Sharon Jones!, Barbara Kopple returns with the incredible and emotionally devastating Desert One—a portrait of heroism even when there’s no clear victory.
Kopple’s newest film sees her return to the politically charged narratives of her past. Moreover, one shouldn’t confuse Ben Affleck’s Argo (2012)—detailing the successful rescue of the Canadian embassy employees—Kopple follows the American ordeal. Desert One features interviews with both the retired Delta Force tasked with saving the hostages, and the former student revolutionaries who stormed the embassy protesting against the brutal dictatorship of the Shah of Iran. She charts the 444 days of the crisis, which witnessed the collapse of Jimmy Carter’s presidency and the creation of a team of special forces soldiers formed for the aforementioned incredible plan.
Anyone with a basic grasp of history knows that the code named Desert One mission ended disastrously. Soldiers flew into Iran during the dead of night, armed with eight helicopters and two refueling planes. They were land on a remote dirt road, board trucks, drive to where they believed the hostage were being held, and then fly out using the helicopters. The plan held multiple moving part, with very little hard intel to back up some of the assertions. At one point, the soldiers are reduced to watching Dateline for solid intelligence. Many believe the mission was a stunt, an politically ailing Carter taking a major risk with American lives in a feigned attempt of being re-elected. Kopple doesn’t parse through that theory with the depth required for the subject. Though, who could blame her? She only had twenty minutes to interview Carter.
Nevertheless, her documentary is actually eulogy to the soldiers. On the fatal night of 24 April 1980, the assembled Delta Force team were given a “Go.” Though they had doubts of the mission success, they still wanted to try. Within a span of few deadly hours, they lost three of their eight helicopters. Needing to abort, in their confusion, a helicopter crashed with a pane, resulting in the deaths of several soldiers. Worst yet, to evade capture they had to leave the bodies of their fellow American soldiers behind. In one poignant clip, days later, children are playing on the blades of one of the fallen choppers. The scene recalls Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down, a film about another debacle.
Even so, Kopple’s Desert One isn’t about failure. It demonstrates the valor in trying. Because unlike America, the soldiers that night didn’t experience a metaphorical defeat.
