I DONT??????? WHO LIED TO YOU JDSKFHLKJSAD
if this is about the two and half boothill fanarts i did, i just copied the hat from screenshots
did a little study for his gestures before starting anything srs (im in love with how he moves) and i (unwillingly) also had to do his hat
for the red-sketch thing i had to midly improvise the perspective from the references i already studied and for the colored icon i just copied the ingame screenshot LMAO

it occurs to me that not everybody studied art books religiously as a kid like I did and weren't always taught super useful basic stuff
so random psa for any beginner artists trying to figure out proportions: the eyes go in the middle of the head
Tumblr media
This doesn't have to be exact of course and there's always room for stylization but basically the whole area above the eyes is supposed to leave room for the hair, bc it doesn't just sit flat on top of the head separately. If the eyes are below center, the nose and mouth usually end up too small and the forehead is huge. If they're above center, it makes the person's face look unrealistically long and makes it seem like their skull ends at their hairline. Anyway, that's mainly what the cross lines are for on the face, to properly center the eyes. It makes everything else fall into proportion way more easily.

i’ve started teaching myself (again for like the 6th time since i was 14) how to draw people and i’m rly enjoying it for the first time i’m so excited.. i’ve always wanted to be able to draw like people and objects and scenes yknow. art. but never had the patience or a learning mindset now i find i’m actually enjoying the process and even though i’m so bad at it i can see how i’ll improve and augh. feels good

What was the timeframe you felt you improved your art the most? Was there anything specific you did to improve?
ooh, good question! i’d have to say either the latter half of 2021 (below) where i was branching out into painting more and i feel like my art started to have a bit more depth— or right now! because i feel like i’ve been managing to draw faster, more consistently, and with more movement!
Tumblr media
as for what i did; hm. i did a LOT of looking at other peoples art, noting what i liked about it, and trying to weave it into mine. started studying more, drawing from life, really taking a moment to process what i see instead of looking at it! it’s a learned ability but truly one of the best parts of being an artist— the view!

she got them poison tipped claws and the boots with the fur
look who i finally finished! took three separate attempts at sketching before i was happy with it, and then it took most of three hours for me to do the painting last night, but she's finally done!
acrylic on an 8 x 10 canvas [image ID] first image is a painting of Lady Sneasler standing and laughing behind her claws. she is surrounded by a cloud of purple and pink gas. second image is a closeup of her claws, which are dripping poison. third image is a closeup of her feet, where the purple fur is feathered [end ID] Lord Electrode ko-fi

Sooo, I got an iPad and Apple pencils for Christmas/birthday from my family and have been enjoying doing life studies and still lifes. This is my friend Kiki wearing a kimono at an event we went to. It could use some more depth and detail (especially the hand) but I’m pretty proud of it. I might revisit it later.
Here’s a time lapse:

All right! Back half portion of the last bit of Namine’s hair is done; I have begun on the final section and while that shape will be Tricky, I expect it to be very doable. (If it REALLY isn’t working I can very easily do the side portion as individual strand as well, and the back shape as it is still works and adds some thickness to her increasingly dense hair so that the back and sides feel roughly even with the bangs.

comparing the irumi that I drew last year (on the left) with the one that I drew this year my improvement is surprisingly clear . I am pretty pleased

I think mistakes are some of the most important things you can do in life, and I dislike heavily how they are thought of as inherently bad or something you shouldn't do.
