Hello everyone! It’s fancuries season! Here’s what I’ve been up to!

Promised Dreams 🦋 Pretty Cure

Promised Dreams has finally been posted! The prologue and chapter one is currently out on Ao3 and chapter 2 is in progress! Here’s what it’s about!

Promised Dreams Pretty Cure has themes of Family, Promises and Dreams and motifs of Nature and Wishes.

As The Kingdom of Wishes is attacked by a dangerous Alliance, young fairy Eos is sent to Earth, The Kingdom of Dreams, with three Cure Compacts. Determined to save her kingdom and Queen, she is in search for the warriors from myth, Pretty Cure.

Meanwhile, Myra Wilson has just moved to Aislgrove, and is attempting to stay optimistic about it. She can't help but doubt the promises of her parents that this would be the last. After a tour of the township, she comes across Eos and then, The Alliance. Endeared by the young duckling, and emboldened in the face of danger, Myra makes a promise that resonates with a Cure Compact that allows her to transform into the Pretty Cure of Fauna, Cure Destiny! Now it's up to her and Eos to find the other two Cures and discover a way to save the Kingdom and Earth!

Here are the currently introduced main characters!

Myra Wilson is a quiet girl who is new to Aislgrove, trying her best to be optimistic about moving again after so many times. She has a reckless streak, jumping in to save others, especially animals, she just can’t help it! She also takes her promises seriously, but it can be difficult to keep a lot of them when you’re constantly moving around. She’s the Pretty Cure of Fauna, Cure Destiny!

Eos is a young fairy from the Kingdom of Wishes, she is a diligent magic apprentice who was on placement to study under the Court of the Kingdom when the Alliance attacked. Sent to Earth by Queen Liora, she is tasked with finding the Pretty Cure’s, now if only she could get over some of her many fears.

Queen Liora is rather young for a queen, at 20 years old, she has only been on the throne for 4 of those years after the banishment of her grandparents. She tries her best though, and having become a Pretty Cure five years prior, she does her best to keep her subjects safe much to her guards dismay. She’s the Pretty Cure of Energy, Cure Radiant!

It is currently being written and has a prologue and chapter 1 available

Happy Birthday Nozomi!

Hopefully this will be the last non-review post on this blog for a good while.

It is (for a few more minutes at least, in my time zone) November 8 and that means two things:

It's Yumehara Nozomi's birthday from Yes! Precure 5

it's the 15th anniversary of the release of the movie Yes! Precure 5 Go Go! Happy Birthday in the Land of Sweets, which came out on this date in 2008.

As you probably know I have been struggling with my review of the movie for several months now. I had hoped to finally get it out on this day in honor of the occasion. Unfortunately there's just a few too many things that still need to be done on it before it's ready to go live, so it's going to be a few more days, maybe a week, but I promise it is imminent. I posted the review of Go Go Dream Live last week in anticipation of this (and also that was 100% complete and ready to go while the movie was not). Please bear with me a little bit longer, we are on the home stretch.

But seriously, I fell so hard in love with Tsubasa thanks to his introduction episode. He’s such a sweet kid, he’s got a dream (to fly), he has a wish (to protect Elle-chan), and he’s an incredibly adorkable NERD!! Bonus points for being voiced by Ayumu Murase, one of my fave seiyuu too! 😆💖

I’m looking forward to the development of his arc the most and am so happy we got such a promising character as the first male Precure in the main cast line up! 🥰

(also, he is so cute at 10 12 years old that if we get a timeskip this season, think how much it’s going to DESTROY us when he’s grown up *nods solemnly in anticipation* 😤✨🤣)

PRECURE & AIKATSU COORDS (PART 1?)

the long promised post where i assign aikatsu dresses to cures!! and im starting with huggto

nono hana - lovely rainbow dream coord

hana was a really tough one and there aren't much reasons to choose this particular coord, but i think it would look nice on hana! the pastel green accents are there and there is some cheerleader vibe

yakushiji saaya - spiritual aqua coord

i planned to go with classical ange for saaya (as the name suggests lol), but i couldn't find a coord that could fit saaya... and this one from mlh is perfect, so angelic!

kagayaki homare - topaz command coord

lets be honest this one was MADE for homare. the shiny yellow with blue accents, the pilot/attendant theme, lots of stars, accesories similar to her cure form, and the overall vibe of "strength and beauty"

aisaki emiru - fortissimo red coord

a nice coord for emiru in my opinion! classy look similar to her civillian outfit, diamond ornaments which she seems to like, a pretty vivid red with white & blue accents and a musical connection~

ruru amour - silver robot coord

this one was a kinda obvious choice... also if im not mistaken the coord is based on the tin man from the wizard of oz (which i know by its adaptation, "the wizard of emerald city"?) who wanted to have a real heart and feel love?

that was much of my little heart and dance fusion... i'll try to add more variety next time .... if youre interested in such content ofc

Hirogaru Sky Precure! Episode 21 Review: Nothing Is A Waste In Life

This episode really makes me like Yoyo a lot. She’s so calm and wise. She’s certainly the wise teacher that everyone needs in their lives. She’s super cool too! Last episode, it was revealed that she goes to a riding club. This episode, it’s revealed that she has a vegetable garden. Just how much cooler can she get?

Tsubasa got a lot of advice from her as he was struggling with finding a dream of his own. Since his dream of flying got achieved by becoming a Precure, he felt as if all the knowledge he accumulated from studying the weather and aerodynamics came to waste. Unlike Mashiro who was struggling to find an actual dream, Tsubasa’s struggle was “what comes next?” I believe he’s looking a new goal in life now that his lifelong goal has been achieved. It’s a very relatable goal, honestly. It reminds me of that scene in Tangled, where Rapunzel got scared of seeing the floating lanterns because that would mean it’d be the end of her dream, but Flynn tells her that she can just find a new dream afterwards.

I think the bond between Tsubasa and Yoyo needs to be acknowledged more. While they are friends, Yoyo is also his guide of sorts. She is the who guided him to her house and that was how he got into aerodynamics. She’s also the one who guides and encourages him to find a new goal in life and that nothing is ever a waste in life. Yoyo is clearly an elderly woman who enjoys her life to the fullest and I really like her for that. The fact that she gave her mirror pad to Tsubasa out of the four Precures really does symbolize how deep their bond is.

Fortunately, he does show promise in something weather related as he pinpoints accurate weather forecasts throughout this episode and it also helped him win against the Ranborg. However, it’s unknown if he’s actually going to pursue that. Hopefully when there’s room for more development episodes, Tsubasa can have his time in the spotlight again. Maybe he can use this knowledge for the development of Sky Land?

Regarding Battamonda, he showed promise in the beginning, but now that he keeps appearing, he feels a bit underwhelming. Instead of trying to capture Princess Ellee, his main mission, he mainly focused trying to beat the Precures. He did some clever tactics, but he just comes and goes at times. However, the next episode seems that his time is done. Though, what’s his final time going to be? Captain Shalala also appeared in the preview, but I don’t feel happy; rather, I feel anxious. Where was she? Is this an Underg Empire trap? I’m anxiously anticipating next week’s episode.

okay, didn't get to talking about the show fooor a while now because I was trying to hold in all my complaints until it was over lol, but it's over now🎉yippee!🎉 so I can complain to my heart's content

so obviously there's some good parts, like the action (in episode 2), seeing everyone again with their upgraded designs ♥ (except Syrup big L), and having them dealing with adult issues, ok and now that's out of the way

the show wasn't meant to be some masterpiece but hoo boy that was kinda messy right? I really felt like the show writers weren't sure of where they were going with the show and so the execution felt lackluster. I definitely felt the show lost its momentum as it went on and the conclusion was simple to say the least.

The beginning started off quite nice. Seeing Nozomi have issues as an adult over expending herself for her student and failing. I liked how the show brought up divorce, a problem without a easy solution. I thought a major theme of the show was gonna be about the difficulties of being an adult and the life you dreamed of not turning out the way you want? And it would have been so good but instead took a left turn and make it about pollution like??

It felt so forced and genuinely less impactful, because how did the girls contribute to pollution?? what did this have to do with them becoming adults??? Depression works just fine! and having the monsters come from human misery just makes more sense? (didnt that happen anyway in episode 5 while hearing nozomi's and coco's insecurities?) but instead I gotta deal with this angel freak attacking people out the random and im supposed to take her seriously like ok.

and is it just me or was the time theme just thrown in there too? It didn't really feel like the girls were focused on the past that much. I thought the girls were going to deal with clinging to the past, lost time, and the pains of growing up? which would have more poignant then nozomi randomly fainting for a week and waking up just fine.

overall the beginning showed a lot of promise but it really didn't deliver as it went on. and no I didn't expect them to do something new?? but just stay in line with the themes they had, really felt like they tossed the whole adult precure concept out the window.

ohhh my gosh the fight scenes?? they were so dull, like I was counting the amount of times they animated the girls actually hit something (it wasn't much) which is so disappointing because episode 2 Nozomi had such great action. she was beating up the villains with blood and gore it was insane, but now we got this like....

most of the show reused these cgi goons with bland designs, and we completely lost the monster of the week concept, so the monsters didn't feel like they were in harmony with the girls issues. The final boss was okay i guess, but yeah it really showed the lack of budget if they couldn't even animate most of the fights for the show.

-teamwork

and the biggest thing that bothers me is the lack of teamwork? like, this is a magical girl team show, why are they solving their problems individually?? Where's the friendship? Where's the love?? At most you get an episode of one girl helping another, but that's like two on screen max and that's so sad?

Why did Komachi help Saki off-screen? Why didn't they spend time baking with each other? Why didn't Rin have a convo with Nozomi? Why are all these fun, sweet moments being passed up? like they have their weekly drink parties, but they honestly feel like meetings. Especially if this is how they're acting after not being in contact for years?? What about a party, a huge sleep over and they all get blasted and have to deal with hangover the next day, like what about fun??

I dunno I felt sad watching uraras episode, which yes it was good and it was very nice to see her reconnect with Syrup, but then I remember the past urara episodes and the girls were always there supporting her. They showed up at her work, delivered her scripts, and sang her a "we love you urara" song with choreo and everything?? What happened to that team? they don't even notice or care? It all just feels so lonesome and humorless which is honestly the most disappointing part.

like what was the point. Why did coco need an apartment? boy can turn himself into a plushie, was him living with nozomi too raunchy? all for a romcom situation we never saw, which would've been great for them learning how to live like a couple??

the romance just felt so divorced from the rest of the story and unnecessary at times. And it wouldn't have been so bad if they let their personalities shine? Like why not focus on that Nozomi was inspired by Coco and how he feels about her being a teacher? (instead of stalking her 💀)

Or what about Nuts and Komachi? He was her editor before, he has nothing to say to her now that she's an accomplished writer? They were all friends before, let it show! Who cares if it was romantic of not? Why wouldn't all the girls be excited to see Coco and Nuts too? Why wouldn't Urara and Syrup still stay in contact (but he has time to deliver Nozomi's love letters?) No big reunion party?? WHY DID NO ONE STAY IN CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER????

It's the same issue the yes 5 shows had with romance, especially with Coco/Nozomi, bending itself around for melodrama. the reason no one else kept in contact with each other, was to build up coco and nozomi. the reason the time flower drama existed was for coco and nozomi.

I feel like im being harsh, but I just can see it being better executed. Or not even! Just something more substantially that fit the themes of them growing up. Like why bring up all those issues of marriage if they weren't going to solve them on screen! Or i dunno, break up and move on with life!

Movie update

Hi all. Sorry it’s been almost a month. I’ve been working on it I promise. Even though I use VLC to automate screenshots, I still have to supplement them with some manual additions, and as this is a movie, there’s more to deal with. I had a hard time finding time to sit down and rewatch it to take my notes and get more screenshots. Finally got to do so. Now I just have to organize my thoughts. So let me explain what we have here.

The left screen is the actual movie, running in MPC-HC. Then on the right side of the right screen we have VLC’s automated gallery, which has about 800 images. On the top left are my notes, and on the bottom left are my own screenshots that will supplement/replace the ones VLC took. About 150 of those.

I need to trim the album down a bit, that’s almost 1000 pictures combined, which is double my record from the last movie. I also need to compress my notes because the majority of that is just plot recap, which I intend to be more manageable this time.

So what’s going to happen is I’ll do that and I’ll start organizing my notes and adding more thoughts as I trim out the “here’s what literally happened” descriptions, and add in screenshots in the middle of all that, and then maybe give the movie another watch so I can compare it with the first YPC5 movie (they’re very structurally similar). Maybe (very maybe) I’ll make some gifs and video clips to show off the animation.

ALso, Go Go Dream Live is done but needs a final pass and I’m going to do that when they’re both done so they flow together well. They’ll be posted together. Give me another week or two tops I hope. I don’t want these to roll into June.

That’s the state of things. If you want something to do while waiting, reread all my reviews and leave some thoughts, or place bets on when Cure Butterfly is going to debut in Hirogaru Sky, or go watch Zombie Land Saga. (That has nothing to do with Precure beyond a few shared voice actors, it’s just a really good show and I want more people to see it)

My Dream Last Night: Hill and Valley Pretty Cure

Had a dream there was a new Precure season called "Hill Valley Precure" or something to that effect. The theme was Imagination and Memory. There was a full team of 6 Precure.

When the Pink Girl was little, she had vivid fantasies about being a princess in a fairy kingdom. But today, she's an aspiring writer who can hardly put a single word to paper. Desperate for inspiration, she goes back to where she used to play when she was young...and discovers the kingdom was real all along!

But the kingdom's in trouble; a dastardly villain wants to eliminate all thought from the human world. The kingdom, which is made from human imagination, is suffering from this. Therefore, Pink Girl must take up the mantle of Pretty Cure and save both worlds!

Notably, the subject matter of this 'season' was...pretty dark for Precure.

One of the biggest things about this season was that each of the villain's lieutenants was someone related to one of the Cures, who experienced something so awful that they agreed to completely erase their memory in exchange for working for the Big Bad.

One lieutenant was the Green Cure's father. Green's mother had become so distraught with raising him when he was younger that she decided to end it all. Green's father loved his son dearly, but he couldn't bear to look him in the eyes anymore; so he left Green with his granny and never came back.

Another lieutenant was the Orange Cure's older sister; a former Cure herself. Their parents were so proud that their eldest daughter was a hero; to the point where Orange fell by the wayside. She tried everything she could to get their favor again; throwing herself into her studies, constantly training for Track and Field, but nothing seemed to work; until her big sister caught her slitting her wrists, and vanished the following day.

Things weren't great on the Cures' side, either. Blue and Yellow both had massive breakdowns to the point where the others had to battle them.

It turned out the villain had a somewhat sympathetic motivation: they believed eliminating thought and memory would help get rid of all the sadness in the world.

But the whole point was that sadness was important; it's both the good and bad, the highs and lows, the hills and valleys, that make us human.

The epilogue showed everyone in a more hopeful place. Pink finishing her first draft, and maybe falling in love in the near future. Green and his dad visiting his mother's grave, with Green excitedly telling her about their adventures and his father promising to be there for his son. Orange reconciling with her sister, and her scars finally stating to heal.

FOR THE HONOR OF GRAYSKULL!

The Precures have arrived at Eternal just as Syrup is being confronted by Anacondy to hand over the Rose Pact! It’s the mid-season climax and that means a new power. So what is it and how do we get there? Let’s find out!

The Plot

Syrup takes advantage of Anacondy’s distraction to hide behind the door, so she leaves to take care of the intrusion. After she’s gone, Syrup flees, wanting to help the girls but lamenting that he’s a traitor.

FN-2199 wants to know your location

Nozomi declares to Nabatakos that they followed him to bring Syrup home. Anacondy shows up and fires Nebatakos, condemns him for letting the Cures follow him, and says this is not worth reporting to the Director.

Dream tells Coco to go find Syrup while they fight a transformed Nebatakos. Anacondy blocks Coco, but Rose gets him through the door and takes on the appraiser herself.

Coco pursues Syrup further into the museum while the Cures and Rose keep fighting. As they struggle, Syrup soon finds himself face-to-face with the Director himself.

Deal, or no deal?

The Director realizes Syrup has the Rose Pact and demands he hand it over. Coco interrupts and encourages Syrup to come home, assuring him that he hasn't betrayed the group since he still has the Pact.

The Director and Coco clash words, arguing over the ownership and value of sacred cultural treasures. Syrup comes to his senses and the two flee outside to find the girls defeated. 

Coco and Dream protect Syrup from Anacondy’s attacks. Everyone expresses their desire to go home together with Syrup, while Anacondy reminds him that all he has to do to stop the violence is hand over the Rose Pact. Then she blasts the girls again.

Misaka Mikoto is suing over this

Syrup finally admits he was happy when Coco used to talk to him when he was lonely, which inspires Coco to give a speech about important treasures. He declares that they’re all going home together, including Syrup, and begins glowing.

The crown of Palmier Kingdom appears and starts to land on him. Anacondy tries to shoot him again, but this time Milky Rose takes the hit, reverting back to Milk from the damage.

When the crown lands on Coco, Flora appears and her energy heals the Cures. They summon their new Cure Fleurets and perform a new finisher, Rainbow Rose Explosion, destroying Nebatakos.

Where there is light, shadows lurk and fear reigns. Yet by the blade of knights, Mankind was given hope.

Syrup vows to not be tempted again and to go to the Cure Rose Garden together with everyone.

At Natts House, Nozomi tells Syrup to keep the Rose Pact. Coco feels he's still got a way to go as a king. Syrup starts to thank him for his kindness but Queen Bavarois awakens and he refuses to finish the sentence. While they argue, the camera pans over everyone smiling and having fun.

The Analysis

What I Liked

This episode fully resolves the tension between Syrup and Coco in a really wholesome way, establishing that Syrup did find some value in Coco’s kindness after all despite his reluctance to admit it.

Syrup being tempted by the villains, walking right up to the line of betrayal before he backs off, is a new territory for Precure I think. Showing that good people can be tempted by the hollow promises of evil is a powerful lesson, but also demonstrating that it’s never too late to change your mind and do the right thing, is equally wonderful.

Coco makes some great speeches about what home is and what treasure is as well as who should own it. It’s reminiscent of Nuts’s speech from episode 14 about colonialization, although it doesn't get into that topic so explicitly. Coco’s speech feels more organic and pertinent to the theme of the show, although the two ideas are definitely interconnected.

There’s a shot where Nebatakos sends all the Cures flying that is particularly well animated. And yes, it’s not lost on me that that’s an odd sequence to single out.

Anacondy has a great, sinister moment right after this where she catches Cure Lemonade who has been hurled towards the window, coldly tells her that the Collection is valuable, and then throws her off to the side while telling her to go flying in a different direction.

Anacondy in general is on top of her game this episode, full take no shit mode and participating in combat for the first time in the series. It’s mostly firing energy blasts that explode on the target, and she doesn’t utilize her Gorgon abilities to turn things to stone (which would end this fight rather quickly) but it’s cool that she can keep pace with the monstrous Nebatakos without breaking a sweat.

We get a fairly thorough look at Eternal’s Collection, including what look like skeletons of dinosaurs and dragons.

The Cure Fleurets and Rainbow Rose Explosion are a really cool attack. They summon five rose that merge into one giant rose that scoops up the villain and destroys it as it blooms. Or as a friend called it, the Audrey II attack.

As I said on the other blog, there’s a really really great shot where there’s a reflection in Syrup’s eyes. I love it.

What I Didn’t Like

The fight between the Cures, Milky Rose, Nebatakos, and Anacondy is cut up and interspersed briefly between the longer sequences of Syrup and Coco navigating Eternal and arguing with the Director. I understand that the philosophical struggle is more important than the physical fight, but I’m allowed to take umbrage with how it’s handled.

The villain final forms in the last two seasons have been a bit of a mixed bag. Nebatakos really doesn’t do it for me. He has the same problem Scorp had but even moreso, he’s all head. I think a more anatomically correct colossal squid would actually be scarier.

They Cures do not use the Cure Fleurets as actual swords, they’re just a channel for a rose bomb. The sibling franchises, Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, have no qualms using sword toys as swords so I don’t understand the reservation towards depicting fantasy weapons as such when the target audience is girls.

Miscellaneous

Milk appears in her fairy form for the first time since episode 19.

As with the previous powerup episodes, this one comes from a fairy, but for once it’s not the Cool New Fairy (Porun, Lulun, Moop & Foop, Milk), but the main partner of the series, Coco. (Nuts will get his turn, don’t worry)

A fleuret is the French word for a fencing sword, or foil.

As best I can determine, the Cure Fleurets are modeled after rapiers. The hilt and guard are modeled after a rose, with another smaller color-coded rose sticking out of the rear. There are butterflies adorning the hilt, and a long color-coded blade sticks out of the top. The fleuret actually starts as a single shaft with all 5 smaller rosebuds sticking out of it (called Bouquet Mode), which then break off and become swords of their own for the girls. The design is ornate because it’s the cool new toy for kids to buy, the rose in the middle lights up and has sound features.

The Cure Fleurets are named after one of each Cure’s previous special attacks: Crystal Fleuret (Crystal Shoot), Fire Fleuret (Rouge Fire), Shining Fleuret (Lemonade Shining), Protect Fleuret (Mint Protection), and Tornado Fleuret (Aqua Tornado).

Queen Bavarois is not annoying in this episode.

Conclusion

This was another fantastic episode. I’d be hard pressed to say any mid-season climax has been bad up to this point, but thinking forward there’s definitely some that have been more lackluster. However, I really like the emphasis being a bit unconventional. It’s traditionally a bonding moment with a fairy but in this one the bonding and support is almost independent of the Cures’ fight with the villain. It’s of course part of their overall struggle since they’re trying to rescue the Rose Pact, but the root is Syrup and Coco’s relationship, and by extension his relationship with the rest of the girls. I think it’s a great conclusion to the arc set up over the last few episodes, and now that it’s out of the way, it’s time for some lighter fare (and awful art).
