Very good game, but I think the story and writing could've used a liiiil more time in the oven. I get the impression that a lot of it was made to address the complaints people had about Black and White. There are comparatively few new Pokemon, bright colors are everywhere, and there's no shortage of returning Pokemon; you can even just box your Kalos starter and sweep the game with a Mega Kanto starter if you want, because the game makes sure all the iconic, nostalgic Pokemon are readily available. I for one actually like this, though Kalos does sort of lack a sense of character in regards to its Pokedex, compared to how distinct those of previous regions were. The story and characters though, are the biggest issue. Or rather, the lack of story. After Gen 5, which had some of the best story points and villains in the series, they backpeddled into goofy over the top bad guys who want to destroy the world because uhhhh reasons. Your "friends" in this game aren't much better. Yeah, they're all distinct and everything, but you never really get to know any of them beyond the basic traits they establish at the start, none of them really do much to help you or progress the plot, yet somehow THEY all get medals for being "Defenders of Kalos", ignoring that you, the newly coronated champion, did everything yourself. They all have potential to be interesting and likeable, but they never really do anything with it. That's my take, really; the story and characters leave a lot to be desired but the game itself is fun. Trying to distance it from Gen 5 was a mistake.
