No Regrets (Snow White With the Red Hair)

Author: Snowflake!anon This is my Squealing Santa gift for @wertzunge! I haven't written for this fandom much but I hope it's enjoyable nonetheless. HUGE shoutout to our host @hypahticklish for making the magic happen this year! This fic contains MAJOR manga spoilers up to Ch.103! Please read with care!

“Mitsuhide,” Zen said, getting to his feet with a frustrated grunt, “I swear I will get you to speak candidly to me even if I have to resort to drastic measures to do it.”

His assistant and friend startled, watching his approach warily. “What? I am being honest. It doesn’t bother me.”

They’d been discussing Kiki’s engagement to Lord Hisame at length since she’d come to them about it, even rehashing their conversation from when Mitsuhide turned down her marriage proposal. Zen could almost believe his friend truly wasn’t bothered – almost. But not quite.

Now he stood in front of where the other man was seated and crossed his arms, giving him a stern look that Mitsuhide knew meant business. “Do you regret your decision?”

Mitsuhide hesitated, but not for the reason Zen thought. “No. Lord Hisame is annoying, but he seems to really like Kiki, and if she’s happy—”

“Drastic measures it is.” Zen plunged his fingers into his friend’s ribs, grinning at the surprised bark of laughter it pulled from him. Mitsuhide squirmed in his seat and tried to get up to defend himself, but the prince kept tickling him right back into place, holding his ground in a way the knight would have found impressive if he weren’t otherwise occupied.

“Zen! S-Stohohohop, I’m seheheheherious! I’m okahahahahay! I promise – gahk!” Mitsuhide tried his best to hold in his squeaky, feminine giggles but utterly failed, the sounds spilling from his lips making him blush furiously in embarrassment. He curled up on himself – the only thing he could think to do when his underarms were being assaulted like this – and whined. “Nohohohohoho fahahahahair! I’m tehehehehelling the truth! I swehehehehear, Zen!”

“Do you regret your decision to turn her down?”

“Nohohohohoho!”

“So her engagement doesn’t bother you? Even though it’s to Lord Hisame?”

Mitsuhide was going to lose it if Zen didn’t stop tickling him. “I prohohohohomise I’m fihihihihihine! I wahahahahant her to be hahahahahappy, and s-she seheheheheems happy with hihihihihim! For gohohohohoodness sahahahake, Zen – cut it ohohohohout already!”

Zen hummed in consideration, then finally let up and turned to stalk back over to his desk. “If you can say so when I’m targeting your weak spot, I suppose you must be telling the truth. That’s good, then.”

Mitsuhide pouted, having gotten to his feet to pace a little and walk off his embarrassment and the residual tickles he still felt. “That was mean. Why’d you resort to tickling me? I know I’m bad at expressing my feelings, but I don’t lie about them.”

After a pause, the prince nodded and turned to smile at him. “No, I guess not. After all, you did tell Kiki ‘no’ straight to her face after she poured her heart out to you.”

“T-That’s not – you know that’s not how it went! Quit teasing me! We came to an understanding and now she’s moving on. And you know…” Mitsuhide carefully strode over to the window where Zen had been observing the couple in question. Kiki and Lord Hisame were walking the grounds and talking, and they looked entirely at ease. “…she really does look happy with him.”

Zen nodded just as Kiki looked right up at the both of them like she knew they’d been watching. She probably had. “That she does.” He nudged his friend without breaking eye contact with the blonde below. “I’m glad you’re all right, Mitsuhide.”

Mitsuhide nudged him back, smirking. “You have a funny way of showing it.”

Obi comes into the picture all suspicious, you know? Tried to scare Shirayuki, dubious background, didn't know what his angle was... Shisui? He's a fucking SWEETHEART it's like omg this, this is where Obi gets it from, but Shisui plays it so beautifully innocently warm whilst Obi is gruffer, more evasive and playful with his affection, and I'm just 😭🥰😭🥰🥰😭 Obi thinks he's unworthy because of the things he did to survive... But he melts around Shisui, because Shisui did worse things and is still such a wonderful person, the others are seeing a brand new side of Obi, being vulnerable and Shisui has stories of their childhoods together, and Shirayuki begins to realise just how much she loves him and it's to scary depths, and Shisui is there with a warm little quirk to his mouth and he knows and it's just 😩😩❤️😩❤️😩❤️❤️

Shisui ends up getting hired in the castle too but, older bros with older bros, is the bodyguard of the Crown Prince (later, King) Izana. And those two, you just know, will get on dangerously well because it's all big picture BUT Shisui shares Zen's affinity for appealing to people and cultivating allies, so Shisui can help bridge the brothers and Izana realises that Zen is easier to talk with when Shisui is present so Shisui is always the one to fetch Zen and Zen is blushing and oh god it's all coming together 😩

I was reading Snow White with the Red Hair volume 4 and chapter 17 stood out to me. So I went to the anime to watch the episode that covers the chapter. Its not the same though. Episode 12 actually combines two different chapters. I'm not sure what specific chapter the second half of the episode comes from. Episode 12 covers what is known as Open Castle Day and chapter 17 is just shown to be an outing for the main 5. The anime pretty seamlessly fuses the chapters together though. So its not bothersome. There are some moments that I wish were in the anime like these here.

And the moment where Obi gives Shirayuki the hair ornament is changed too. In the anime, Obi is left alone with Shirayuki because Zen has to appear before the public. That's when he gives it to her.

In the manga Obi just comes out of the match with his winnings and casually gives her the hairpin in front of everyone. And Zen even reacts to it.

The anime seems to be feeding into the love triangle here and giving Obi a more "private" moment with her 🤭

This scene is in there too but its handled differently because some dialog is taken from chapter 17 and some taken from the other chapter to mesh two moments between Zen and Shirayuki together.

I just thought it was worth mentioning the differences between the anime and manga. I've actually noticed that the anime does things like this a lot. Season 2 particularly has some splicing of moments and such. But like I said its not bothersome. In fact it just means that the two versions are different enough to be separate enjoyable experiences.
