more memes from the ghostly Golden Guards but now they’re finale flavored

the ghosts are Luz’s own personal hype team and I just know they went through the widest possible range of emotions. first they’re mourning that Luz died and she’s probably not gonna be a ghost with them, then they’re hollering that she’s back to life, and then they’re howling like deranged monkeys as she beats Belos to a PULP. felt more emotion in those ten minutes than they had in their entire living lives

He lived because his friends loved him enough to keep dragging him back from the abyss.
But one twist of fate and he would have been alone forever. If things had been just a little different, Hunter would be dead one way or another.
“I keep- I keep dreaming about them,” he said, gasping for breath. “Every night and it won’t stop. They keep asking why I lived, what’s so special about me and- and they’re right, there’s nothing different about me. I just…Got lucky.”
“We love you,” Amity said fiercely. “That’s why you’re here. Because we are never leaving you behind.”
“That’s just it,” Hunter said. “Why didn’t anyone love them?”

Hunter has the Grimwalker journal. It goes about as well as you'd expect.

More content for my "Hunter can see the previous Golden Guard ghosts after Thanks to Them" AU, now renamed "Golden Medium AU": Dadrius edition
At some point, Darius tells Hunter that he was so worried because he wasn't even sure if Hunter was still alive. Because there was one moment while he was a puppet when he had the same feeling he had when his mentor died. Like how Camila cried when Luz died. The bond they had was strong enough to let them just know.
Hunter doesn't know what to respond. If he should tell him the truth. But he didn't want to make Darius more worried like he already stated. If he should provide comfort.
That's when Darius' mentor appears and he is just looking at Darius. Hunter thinks that he isn't even aware that Hunter is there too. The sorrow, regret and pain on his face was so obvious.
It actually looked kind of peaceful. Two friends who could share their guilt.
Two people who are both grieving for the other while being seperated in two different realms.
"I don't blame you, you know. I don't know what led you to treat me the way you did back then and you don't have to tell me right now but for all it's worth? I fell safe with you. I can rely on you. You are my family. You are my home. And that's more than anything I ever dreamt of."
Darius turns to Hunter, eyes glassy, and he hugs him, holding him tightly. And Hunter just melts into the touch.
When the hug is over, Darius is smiling. But he still has that look of being stuck in the past.
"I am sure he would be proud too", Hunter says.
Darius with his signature smile now but not because of the content of Hunters words but because of Hunters action itself. It means so much to him that his boy he cares so much about cares about him just as much.
But behind Darius? His mentor is grinning. He finally fades away for the day without any signs of sadness.

grimwalker ghosts being loosely organized into two camps when greeting newly dead arrivals that are like "sympathetic, gentle, kind" and "Deeply Fucking Unsympathetic." yet another poor kid in his early twenties is screaming over his own dead body in the grimwalker pit and there's a coalition of ghosts (probably older ones, with non-belos family members, and/or newer to being dead) who immediately swarm and surround him like no hey hey hey it's okay you're fine now take it easy let's get away from here. it's okay i know i'm sorry. it's okay. meanwhile there are several others in the background who are rolling their eyes and sighing dramatically just like "yeah yeah yeah, the realization that our existences are a lie and our lives are meaningless and we have ruined a perfectly good world and we're monsters and everything sucks forever and we've lost all our hope and potential and we have never ever ever been loved, we've all seen it. can you PLEASE shut up"

the golden guards were all people. They were different. the similarities they had to Caleb was looks only- they were all parented/guided by Belos, and they don't have his memories.
It's not that they're inherently good. What's the point of Hunter's storyline of breaking away and being good if you just attribute it to something inherent to all of them?
Rather, I think it's Belos. He makes the grimwalkers, and he destroys them when he thinks they've betrayed him.
He's shown this trait on screen when he gets confident, when he thinks he's won; he lets his guard down, even if only a little. He's confidently leading Hunter to the memories and hoping Hunter, unlike Caleb, would rejoice in what he was doing. He thinks Hunter is dead in his mind before he Isn't. He takes Luz's hand in a handshake, only to be branded.
So the other golden guards... maybe some of them weren't good. We know some were, of course, and we see two of the previous ones have doubts on screen, about blowing up a town and about leaving witches to die.
But Belos wants something unattainable. And the moment he becomes distinctly, sharply aware of it, he does away with it. So even the golden guards that might've been on board with killing everyone might've been taken down by Belos.
He wants his brother, like he saw him in his childhood. Someone who guided him, helped him, and would hunt witches with him. Someone who wouldn't disagree with his decisions. And none of them ever lived up to that image, perhaps even the ones who would go along with Belos' plans.
Isn't that more vile?

why is nobody talking about the first (successful) grimwalker
Belos probably loved that thing (twistedly so) to death. he though he had succeeded. maybe it didnt exactly look right but it was Caleb’s. maybe it wasn’t perfect but it was Caleb’s. his baby. his nephew.
and then it betrayed him.

Hunter sleeps holding his Sprig plushie, and he's done this since he was really little. Lilith gave it to him by putting it in the crib next to him, as a gift from one of his predecessors.
(In the Canon!Timeline, it was last seen at Gus's place. Locked in his toybox for safe keeping. Once it was found again, Hunter kept it on his bed. Occasionally bringing it with him to sleepovers.)
(I'm debating on whether it'll be too big for him to hold as a baby. But I'm imagining him as smaller than the plushie for scale. Also the eyes are soft, so it would be safe for an infant/toddler under 3.)

One thing I'm iffy about the finale is that we didn't get to see the souls of Caleb and the previous Golden Guards passing on after Belos dies.
It would've also been nice to see Hunter stomping on Belos too, but I know Hunter's arc was never really about that. He already had his standoff with Belos back in Thanks To Them. It was about him finally freeing himself from his abuser and figuring out the future he wants for himself.
For Caleb and the GGs, like they would appear in front of Belos for the last time as he dies, silently watching him perish alongside Titan!Luz. Afterwards, you can tell they finally feel at peace, the knife above Caleb disappears, and pass on.

i know philip was exceedingly neglectful of his grimwalkers and he never even told them he'd been in the human realm before, but I really like the idea of him spinning this whole story about his Poor Brother who was Killed by Wild Witches and Hunter is just taking it all in with wide eyes and then the ghost of all the grimwalkers Philips killed and his brother start heckling him like "BOOOO I'VE HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE!"

Grimwalker Jonah’s short and eventful tenure as the Golden Guard, relatively early during Belos’s ministry, perhaps only 4 or 5 grimwalkers into it. He experienced toddlerhood and as much of a childhood as someone like Philip could give him, and lived to see twenty-one before the instability in his makeup - either because Philip fiddled with the spell and put bones from more than one ortet in the mixture or because one of the bones belonged to Philip, transmitting a form of his curse - caused a complete breakdown in Jonah’s ability to maintain a physical, non sludge body.
Philip did not allow himself to become as attached to any of the others, after that.

Eda looked around at them all and winced. “So, the kids have gone to the Human Realm.” She weakly waved her scroll at them with a poor attempt at her usual grin. “Y’see…Hunter might have found the Grimwalker journal?”
Eberwolf loudly and colourfully swore. Raine let out a horrified groan.
Darius took a deep breath in and out. Then another. He closed his eyes and briefly prayed for strength.
Nope, no good. The panic was swelling, every instinct screamed at him to march into the Human Realm and check on his kid. (Yes, Camila was Hunter’s mom. Hunter was undeniably her child. Darius was not his dad. Hunter was still his kid. Do keep up.)
“He. What?” Darius asked through gritted teeth. Eda had the good sense to step back.
“Darius…” Raine was eyeing him warily.
Darius exploded.
“DID YOU JUST HAVE THAT THING LYING AROUND? ARE YOU BOTH UTTER IMBECILES?”
*
The excavation at the Titan's skull continues. The Hagsquad head to the Human Realm. As the kids take a breather, the adults ponder all that needs to be done.
Darius is not happy about the Grimwalker journal.

New AU idea just dropped
I am sure it has been done before or in some variety and that they were just hallucinations but I like it so:
Hunter can see the Golden Guard ghosts after Thanks to Them. He saw them the first time when he died. They aren't always there and the number depends as well.
When Belos was defeated the ghosts were surprised that they were still there. They keep themselves more in the background. At first. Until one of the younger ones find this out and thinks it is so much fun.
So Hunter getting surprised or spooked by one. And thinking about if he just imagined everything after he died for a sec. But then one of the older ones comes as well and tries to do damage control. Honestly, it kind of made everything worse because now Hunter was having an identity crisis if he is alive or dead or something in between now since he can see their ghosts. The older one explains it to him like how someone with strong oracle magic is just more gifted in communicating with ghosts.
When he finally calms down, which takes a while, he says "Wait, shouldn't you have, idk, passed on when Belos died?!" "Yeah, thought so too but eh, apparently not."
So Hunter learns more about oracle magic.
When someone just pops in and points at something and says "that is totally wrong, yk" and Hunter having a discussion with them.
And everybody else who is watching Hunter just sees him talking to himself. "Hunter? Who are you talking to?"
That's when he notices "Oh... I am the only one who can see them..."
He doesn't tell anyone. Of course.
Turn to one of the previous guards lecturing him "JUST TELL THEM! THEY ARE YOUR FRIENDS!"
They settle on telling Luz first.
And surprise! Hunter isn't the only one who died! "Wait, you actually died?!" "Oh, ehm, yea-" "Me too!"
And they just talk for hours because they didn't have the courage to talk to anyone else about it because they don't want to make others worried. So shared trauma bonding over dying for these two!
