So, since this post garnered interest, sibling suggested I do another one about alternate romantic subplots, since they are seemingly the only hook of the show in the first place!

If ur interested but haven't read the original post (not sure why u would be interested in that case, but anyway,) click the link and read that post first since this won't make any sense otherwise.

If u want a list of the problems I had with the canon romantic plot then go to this post from my side-blog. Most of the complaints are about Miraculous, (some are about Avatar:tla as well). I’m about to do a lot more complaining, but that post lays out exactly what I don’t like seeing in TV pining stories.

Again, it's under a cut, 'cos I am seemingly incapable of writing short posts. Also, the usual warning, I am bitter and tired and get stuff wrong, this will not be kind to the canon show. Super-fans, you have been warned:

Love Square

-(prepare for a quick ramble-rant)-

“As teenagers, she’s in love with him but he’s oblivious. As superheroes, he’s in love with her but she’s just annoyed!”

That was the synopsis on Netflix that made me watch this show in the first place, and kept me hooked for two and a quarter seasons. It’s definitely what makes the show stand out from other superhero shows.

The creators knew this. And proceeded to misuse this information completely. .Let me make something clear:

A love story... Is still a story. 

It needs development, plot and a clear direction. Opposing forces to the love story need to be there to further the narrative, like a good antagonist, not create meaningless drama for the sake of “[evil exec voice] oh-ho-hoo, maybe they will not be endgame, maybe, maybe not, you do not know, and you will keep watching this dumpster-fire until you do, no matter how crap the writing gets!!”

-Just to clarify, evil exec voice sounds like Dr Doofenshmirtz-

Marinette/LB and Adrien/CN do not have a love story. They have a love... blah. A love blah. They love eachother because they do. From the origins episode, their relationship doesn’t change at all. Thus, not a story.

I’ve gone into this about kat@@ng from a:tla before, but I’ll sum up here:

Love (in my book at least)= Consistent support, respect, admiration, honesty, loyalty, joy & care. [When these are mutual, it becomes a loving relationship].

You could argue that these things are present in the love square, however, I would then point to a very important premodifier: Consistent. Yes, Mari/LB and Adri/CN support/respect/admire/etc. each other sometimes. But you’ll get a good ol’ scene like that and then in the very next episode she’ll be hitting him on the head or stealing his stuff or breaking into his home. This being, of course, due to the show’s obsession with maintaining the status quo and never going anywhere (see Chloe’s entire character arc).

And then, throwing Kagami and Luka into the mix just drives the characters apart! News Flash! Third party threats to a relationship only work if there is a relationship to threaten! The only thing these two are doing is presenting a healthier alternative to pining after someone who apparently doesn’t return their affections!

sO. What does the Chimere-verse do differently?

Firstly, have you ever watched ‘The Office US’? [If you haven’t, do that now, if only for the memes it holds]. It is one show I’ve seen that gets the ‘please-notice-me x oblivious’ pining plot right. I am, of course, talking about Jim and Pam.

The crushes in the love square would be a lot more like Jim’s pining after Pam for the first few seasons. In that they are adorably close best friends and he keeps his feelings close to his chest, loving her but not really admitting it / expecting anything to come from it. That’s how I would present Lina’s feelings for Keri. [None of that icky stalker nonsense (wall photos, schedule in bedroom) from canon. My girl respects him too much.]

Let’s say that the show ends up having six seasons, 26 episodes each; with a three-six month time skip in between each one.

Throughout season one this crush would develop as they become good friends. Unfortunately, this would also be where she puts him on a pedestal. She isn't in love with Keri, she's in love with the perfect, idyllic idea of Keri. Her denial of her crush lasts till the finale, when she admits it to herself.

Season two would see her struggle with the pining aspect, afraid of rejection should she tell him how she feels. It remains more infatuation than real love.

In season three things start changing. Her crush moves on from Keri to Chat Noir and this time the love is all real and all there, bar the aspect of honestly. They've fought side by side and shared each other's battles. She's seen him cry and shout and hurt and make stupid decisions, but she cares about him more than she can even tell. By the end, the love square has switched.

She’s back to pining, but with more complications thrown in, as her feelings start having an impact on their fighting dynamic. End of season 4: Identities are revealed to each other and all the drama and lies put a distance between them.

Season 5, they s l o w l y find their way back to each other and start a real relationship... Right before everything goes to pot and the season ends in chaotic failure. (May make a post about my ideas for that)

In the final season, they are together and their love for each other is explored, tested and ultimately endures to be endgame.

I know. I’m a sap.

Keri’s crush on Coccinelle would follow the same pattern: 1) Starts crushing on her; 2) Pines after her and gets gently rejected at the end; 3) As his crush fades, he becomes closer to Lina and ultimately falls in love with her; 4) Pines after Lina the entire way through and then finds out that Lina is Coccinelle at the end; 5) They slowly work their way back together, start dating and then the crap hits the fan. And finally 6) They be endgame.’

So that’s them out of the way.

The other main relationship would be Audra x Stan, because Alya and Nino gave me hope for the few episodes when their love-lives were explored.

Pretty much, what I had in mind, was that Stan was crushing on Audra from the beginning. She’s weird, funny, cool and cute and he likes her for it. Unlike our ridiculous protagonists, he gets down to it and asks her out. She responds by literally turning into an Audra.exe is not responding meme, and he thinks he’s overstepped. She actually likes him too but her brain overloaded a little. Afterwards, it's a little more awkward between them.

This lasts until she gets the fox miraculous and impulsively tells the first person she bumps into, who, luckily, happens to also be her crush, so while she’s there she also confesses her feelings. After he shows her his own Miraculous, she kisses him and they start an adorable relationship (this would be at the end of season 2 or 3).

It’s only after this that they realise they weren’t supposed to tell anybody.

That leaves Celeste.

She doesn’t have a love interest because my girl really needs to spend 6 seasons working on herself before she can even think about bringing someone else into it.

nothing annoys me more than deliberate ignorance. it’s a diversion tactic. people don’t actually believe that the name of BLM is exclusionary or that toxic masculinity is attacking men. think about it. Nobody complains when someone suggests that you donate money to cancer victims. They don’t say “but what about victims of cystic fibrosis!” They understand that people with cystic fibrosis are still important and if possible they can donate to their treatment, but that is not the specific focus of that particular charity. I don’t buy that this suddenly doesn’t apply when it comes to Black Lives Matter. They understand what the words mean. They know that saying black lives matter doesn’t mean that white or Asian or biracial lives don’t. They want to waste people’s time explaining to them that charities and movements usually have specific focuses about a particular issue which is literally a normal, socially accepted thing. (not to mention that these people often use the tag #bluelivesmatter, proving that they understand the concept. Nobody whines that they are excluding doctors or teachers, because they understand.) Same with toxic masculinity. You understand toxic waste, toxic gas, toxic friendships all to mean that a particular sub-section of wastes, gases and friendships are toxic and that’s what we’re here to talk about, but when we add “masculinity” we’re demonizing it?? Toxic air. Toxic relationship. None of those phrases have ever been accused of demonizing an entire concept, because toxic is just a premodifier to narrow it down to an issue. don’t pretend you don’t understand so you have to educate yourself. if you find it incorrect or inaccurate or confusing or wrong or immoral or whatever, find a real argument.

​修饰

副词是修饰：

• 动词（He drove slowly. — 他怎么开车的？）

• 形容词（He drove a very fast car. 他开的有多快？）

• 另一个副词（He moved quite slowly down the aisle. 她动的有多慢？）

Adverbs are words that modify

a verb (He drove slowly. — How did he drive?)

an adjective (He drove a very fast car. — How fast was his car?)

another adverb (She moved quite slowly down the aisle. — How slowly did she move?)

形容

如上所述，副词经常用来形容时间，地点，原因，或在什么情况下一些事发生了。副词通常用-ly结尾；然而许多不以-ly结尾的单词或短语用充当着副词的作用而一些以-ly结尾的词也不一定是副词。就像：lovely, lonely, motherly, friendly, neighborly,就是形容词。

That lovely woman lives in a friendly neighborhood.

As we will see, adverbs often tell when, where, why, or under what conditions something happens or happened.

Adverbs frequently end in -ly; however, many words and phrases not ending in -ly serve an adverbial function and an -ly ending is not a guarantee that a word is an adverb.

The words lovely, lonely, motherly, friendly, neighborly, for instance, are adjectives.

状语从句

•When this class is over, we're going to the movies.

If a group of words containing a subject and verb acts as an adverb (modifying the verb of a sentence), it is called an Adverb Clause:

When this class is over, we're going to the movies.

短语

如果一个不包含主语和谓语的短语充当着副词的作用，它被称作副词短语：

• He went to the movies.

• She works on holiday.

• They lived in Canada during the war.

另外，动词不定式也能充当副词（经常解释原因）：

• She hurried to the mainland to see her brother.

• The senator ran to catch the bus.

• He calls his mother as often as possible.

And Infinitive phrases can act as adverbs (usually telling why):

• She hurried to the mainland to see her brother.

• The senator ran to catch the bus.

But there are other kinds of adverbial phrases:

• He calls his mother as often as possible.

修饰

副词可以修饰形容词，但是形容词不能修饰副词。所以我们会用“The student showed a really wonderful attitude.”

或“the students showed a wonderfully casual attitude”

或 my professor is really tall, but not "He ran real fast.”

和形容词一样，副词也有比较级和最高级来形容程度。

• Walk faster if you want to keep up with me.

• The student who reads fastest will finish first.

Adverbs can modify adjectives, but an adjective cannot modify an adverb. Thus we would say that "the students showed a really wonderful attitude" and that "the students showed a wonderfully casual attitude" and that "my professor is really tall, but not "He ran real fast."

Like adjectives, adverbs can have comparative and superlative forms to show degree.

Walk faster if you want to keep up with me.

The student who reads fastest will finish first.

我们常用more，most，less和least来表示副词的程度

• With sneakers on, she could move more quickly among the patients.

• The flowers were the most beautifully arranged creations I've ever seen.

• She worked less confidently after her accident.

• That was the least skillfully done performance I've seen in years.

as—as的结构可以用来创作用来表示相同程度的副词：“He can’t run as fast as his sister.”

We often use more and most, less and least to show degree with adverbs:

• With sneakers on, she could move more quickly among the patients.

• The flowers were the most beautifully arranged creations I've ever seen.

That was the least skillfully done performance I've seen in years.

The as — as construction can be used to create adverbs that express sameness or equality: "He can't run as fast as his sister."

形式

有一些副词有两种形式，一种以-ly结尾，另一种不是，在一些情况里，两种形式有着不一样的意思。

• He arrived late.

• Lately, he couldn't seem to be on time for anything.

然而在大多数情况下，一般用没有-ly结尾的形式

• She certainly drives slow in that old Buick of hers.

• He did wrong by her.

A handful of adverbs have two forms, one that ends in -ly and one that doesn't. In certain cases, the two forms have different meanings:

• He arrived late.

• Lately, he couldn't seem to be on time for anything.

In most cases, however, the form without the -ly ending should be reserved for casual situations:

• She certainly drives slow in that old Buick of hers.

• He did wrong by her.

• He spoke sharp, quick, and to the point.

• The school was all but ruined by the storm.

伴随

副词（形容词也是）在不同的程度可以伴随有前置定语

• She runs very fast.

• We're going to run out of material all the faster.

Adverbs (as well as adjectives) in their various degrees can be accompanied by premodifiers:

• She runs very fast.

• We're going to run out of material all the faster

Semiotics

Seventy five percent of our brain processes thought visually. Semiotics is how we make sense of the visual world; by decoding meanings from symbols and signs and how words and images can influence ideas and interpretations. Philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce believes ‘we think only in signs’, which demonstrates how us humans are driven by a desire to make meanings. Signs can be codes, sounds, objects and images/pictures; but they only become signs when we attach them with meaning. ‘Nothing is a sign unless unless it is interpreted as a sign.’ As stated by Peirce, we interpret things unconsciously by connecting them to recognised cultural conventions. 

Ferdinand de Saussure is a Swiss linguist states that in linguistics signs are inherently arbitrary. Daniel Chandler supports this as he believes that ‘linguistics categories are not simply a consequence of a premodified structure in the world’. Peirce constructed a triadic model of the sign, breaking down the understanding of how we perceive meaning. The sign vehicle is the physical evidence; the sign referent is the mental concept and directly linking the sign and object creates the sign interpretent.
