From Kansas City to Los Angeles
Context is everything!
One thing that is unreasonable is addiction and her obsession is an insoluble problem. It’s not good when not everyone hugs, squeezes, touches, grabs and then brags about her achievements. Some unwanted hugs are just awkward, but others have bad intentions. Sometimes it is simply putting pressure on someone, other times it is the first stage of a later attack. SH uses hugs as an initial step to gain fans; A serious actor would never tolerate undesirable intrusions into his space.
Tumblr media
If SH is not opposed to hugging, they would move on to other types of physical contact. Under these circumstances, it seems quite plausible after his private session in Kansas City (MO) where his fans grabbed SH’s hand and intertwined her fingers, (fingers interlocked is a pretty intimate gesture, It’s not appropriate for a fan who doesn’t know her place). So SH fans say it’s because he is just a sensitive man, but this is not a misunderstanding. Sam doesn’t know the importance of boundaries and says NO. A non-essential hug, grabbing, squeezing, touching or kissing can be part of a pattern of harassment and a prelude to assault.
Tumblr media
Social Private Fan Event on 26th August 2023 Kansas City (MO)
Also, she didn’t stop once SH didn’t complain. But this can progress as the touch becomes more invasive, the fact that he didn’t resist the previous touches meant they weren’t talking either. If at first was not overtly sexual, these people have sexual and sensual fantasies with an imaginary man. They are very aware of his actions and are not entirely innocent. A certain person’s hugs, grabbing, and squeezes are creepier than a bucket of eels.

hi there!! i think you go by infel now? you used to be heavily into sound horizon, yes? i am interested in it but do not know where people start haha!! as another zektbach fan, i was curious as to your recommendations. also, they do stage plays/musicals or something too right? and they have subgroups??? @___@ theres a lot going on there. is it something you'd recommend to another zekt fan? thank you for your time and have a nice evening/day~
Hello! Yes I go by Infel these days, and I still do love sound horizon, I listen to them almost daily. I think the whole concept behind the band in general is something zektbach fans would enjoy, since it’s also story music. Though while zekt mainly has its story in external books/drama CDs/websites/etc. SH mainly tells its story directly in the songs themselves, and the music will often contain narration on top of singing. In that sense, it’s a little easier to approach than zekt since the story is mostly contained right there in the music. Like zekt, it’s a bunch of self contained stories (each album is a story) with connections across them. Though the stories themselves are often much more open to interpretation than zekt so there’s a lot of theorizing that goes on.
...This got kinda long so I'll put the rest under a cut
It’s not so much subgroups as it is the members change across albums… Revo is the creator behind it so he’s the only consistent member. Perhaps you’re thinking of Linked Horizon? Which refers to his other work, such as his collaboration with Yuki Kajiura or his soundtrack for Bravely Default.
There are the main story albums (Horizons) of which there are 8 (though the eight horizon itself was skipped and the 9th was released first, yes seriously… and the first story album had a “renewal” album) as well as singles which are short stories too. It started out as a doujin circle, so the first few albums are all self-published (so they’re really expensive if you can even manage to find a copy, but you can just listen to them online). Starting with the 4th horizon and it’s prelude single, they got official releases. They have two types of concerts, story concerts which follow a single horizon, and territorial expansion concerts which are a mix of stuff. And due to its nature as story music, they’re practically musicals, everyone dresses up as the characters to sing and act out what’s going on, they’re really fun to watch! Doujin-era stuff is still relevant too, and they even still sing those songs and a few times they’ve been combined with newer songs.
As for where to start, I think anywhere from the first official releases to anything pre-Nein would be best? It will give you a better idea of SH’s range than starting from doujin era (though I think that’s a fine place to start too if you’d like, it’s just it’s mostly one singer back then, so later on might give you a better idea of what it’s like as a whole) The only reason I advise against starting with Nein or Ema ni Negai wo is because they have more callbacks to older albums than most as well as an expectation you’re familiar with SH particular brand of convolutedness. Which is really funny because Revo was talking about wanting to appeal to a wider audience, then immediately makes an album reliant on knowledge of past horizons including doujin-era stuff lol (They're really good! You just might want to get familiar with the earlier stuff first so you can fully enjoy them.)
I personally started with Seisen no Iberia, one of the singles that has great songs, a self-contained story and gives you a taste what it’s like. I got so interested from there that I went and bought most of the available albums at once and listened to them during a long car ride, and was hooked ever since. I think it’s a good place to start, and from there you can check out the main story albums and other singles! Doujin stuff is really good too. Uhh I’ll give a brief explanation of the 4th-7th horizons, perhaps you can choose what most interests you? They aren’t direct sequels or anything so which you’ll like best is a matter of personal taste. The 4th horizon, Elysion is my favorite, because I tend to like darker stories and ominous atmospheres.
4th horizon- Elysion: This one has a rather creepy atmosphere imo and is told like a storybook. It focuses on a young sickly girl and her father. Themes of twisted love and paradise. There was some interview I can’t find atm that recommended it for fans of dark souls and as a huge soulsborne fan yeah I agree it kinda has that atmosphere. It’s also the most open to interpretation I feel
5th horizon- Roman: This has themes of life and death, and follows a man between life and death who sends out his pair of dolls in search for stories. Michele Malebranche, probably the most famous character from the doujin era plays a role in the story but it’s not necessary to know her too well to appreciate this horizon but it’s all the more fun if you do
6th horizon- Moria: Told like a Greek myth, it follows the tragedy of a pair of twins. Fate is a major theme here. This probably has the most straightforward story?
7th horizon- Märchen: This one takes inspiration from various fairytales as an undead man helps the girls from each story take revenge on those who wronged them. If you start here, you should probably listen to the single “Ido e Itaru Mori e Itaru Ido” (IdoIdo for short) first since it serves as a prologue and gives you some backstory.
Translations are mostly here: https://sh-whitecrow.com/translation/ or here: https://ejtranslations.wordpress.com/category/concept-albums/sound-horizon/
The most recent release is a prologue choose your own adventure type bluray its translations are here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VpsWSmcibx-sGS6mXXkEadX_imLOlG0Cx_DG8cn5jIU/edit

Tumblr media
This Empyre crossover Marvel farted out was so gay, man. I’m not saying that to be homophobic, I'm saying that as a matter of fact. There were a lot of queer folks getting the spotlight in this and i think it was a detriment to the overall narrative, not in the sense that the representation was bad, but more that the overall narrative felt like queer pandering. I was never a huge fan of Wiccan and Hulkling as characters, the only Young Avenger i found compelling was Finesse, but i didn’t hate them being a thing. I actually enjoyed the fact that they loved each other and shared a very openly gay relationship during a time when that type of stuff still needed to be normalized. That said, these two kids are B-List at best. They’re non-factors in the Marvel universe so why the f*ck do they get to headline an entire crossover event? Literally, who thought this was good idea?
Tumblr media
Marvel has been real sh*tty as of late with their writing. There are certain outstanding plots and arcs but those aren’t the norm. I really enjoyed the newest Doom book and whatever the f*ck Hickman is doing over yonder with the X-Men is wildly intriguing. Professor X has finally, properly, transformed into Mr. Right, Magneto? I’m here for all of that. Apocalypse is hanging around being mad sinister about some sh*t that will lead to the corniest crossover event i have ever seen, but still want to see because the first Death is f*cking Anubis and i live for that type of sh*t? Yessir! The last, massive, Thor crossover, War of the Reams was pretty hilarious and had great character interactions that i loved. That last Secret Wars was f*cking phenomenal, following the equally excellent Incursion arcs. God Doom’s Battleworld was the best Battleworld to date. House of M, Spider-Island, Seige, Fear Itself, Spider-verse, Infinity, the SpOck arc; All of these tales, f*cking outstanding. The thing about all of those stories i just listed is that they have an actual story. Those narratives felt like they had a place to go. There was a real plot and the events therein, actually amounted to something. There were very real consequences and definitive shifts in the status quo once those narratives concluded. Empyre has none of that.
Tumblr media
Empyre is so queer, man, and that’s the problem. It feels like the writers started with how gay Wiccan and Hulkling were, and worked backwards to fit some sort of conflict tos bury that lead. It cheapens the validity of their relationship and it grosses me out. This was effectively stunt writing, Twatter catering, gender politic, cash grabbing. Billy and Theo deserve their happy ending and they deserved a much better narrative to get them there. It’s been a long time coming, but to marry them in the most obnoxious, over-the-top, Bayhem-esque, manner possible, feels like  cop out. This whole story feels like agenda over narrative and that’s the sh*t f*cking up everything in media today. Look, Billy and Theodore can be as gay as you want them to be. That’s fine. I’m here for all of that. But those are just aspects of the characters, not their definition. There should never be an intergalactic conflict where the sun is going to blow up the entire f*cking solar system, and all of that drama takes a backseat to the sexuality of two kids who have been f*cking on the regular for, what? A decade and a half? I mean, the entire resolution to this mess was “The Power of Love” like they’re both Disney Princesses or some sh*t. You should have called this arc Frozen because it has that same energy.
Tumblr media
I’ve written at length about how i feel diversity should be portrayed in our entertainment media. It absolutely needs to be there. The sh*t we watch should always reflect the world we live in and this world is a rainbow of race, creed, sexuality, and capability. If you want to focus your narrative on any single one of these things, to define your entire story and conflict through such a narrow lens, that’s fine. The best way to tell those stories is to make them as intimate as possible because those are, by nature, very personal and intimate stories. Peanut Butter Falcon, Boys Don’t Cry, and Love Simon, are perfect examples of that. This is not the type of story Empyre presents. If you want to write a sprawling epic that examines what it means to be whatever in the context of a narrative, that’s fine, too. I don’t care for The Old Guard but the way they explore what it means to live forever, what it means to love forever, in such an organically beautiful manner, i couldn’t help but commend that production for it. Even if the film whiffed on the rest of the character adaption. This is the type of story Empyre wants to tell but it reads like the opposite of that. It reads like the whole Rey debacle and “The Force is Female” situation with Star Wars. It feels preachy and forced, not respectful and genuine. That’s the wrong way to handle all of this.
Tumblr media
You want to marry Billy and Theo, f*cking go for it. Make it an event in a one shot like they did Spider-Man or Superman. Make that an arc unto itself. That’s one of those intimate stories i was talking about. You don’t need an entire, intergalactic, war as a prelude to something that should have happened a decade ago. I mean, the way Marvel bent over backwards to bring eternal enemies, the Kree and the Skrulls, together for this creatively bankrupt, sermon as some weird ploy to make this marriage mean more than it should feels like they didn’t have faith in doing just that. It’s kind of offensive. Just write good stories with great characters and everything will take care of itself. Billy shouldn’t be a glorified deus ex machina and solve the puzzled that is the Kree-Skrull alliance “with his kiss.” Theo doesn’t have the clout to be an entire linchpin to a massive, multi-issue, crossover event. Like, who cares? Both of these characters deserve much better than this, and that’s coming from a guy who doesn’t really care about either of them. This entire event feels so disingenuous to me, which is a shame, because this thing had all of the hallmarks of being as dope as Annihilation only Marvel went “Full Woke” with their nonsense. This sh*t reads as bad as those new New Warriors that dropped a few months back. Marvel is overextending trying to appeal to that Twatter crowd and it’s making their books damn near unreadable. Sh*t’s all bad comedy now.

OFFAL HUNT REMASTERED LIVEBLOG // CHAPTER 14
IN THIS EPISODE OF THE OFFAL HUNT LIVEBLOG:
On the other end of the line, Cinder let out a tight sigh. “Yeah. Okay, well—I’m in a difficult position right now. I’m balancing a lot. So, that wasn’t, you know, directed at you or whatever… I’m just trying to deliver you to Atlas. That’s all.”
“Yeah,” Glynda said. “This apology sucks.”
CINDER FALL TRIES TO HAVE MANNERS. AND FAILS. BUT SHE TRIES.
it’s been a WHILE but i’m STILL HERE!!!!!!!!! also i’m a little late to the draw and also unlike w/ prior chaps i did actually read this one when it came out so i’ve had my first run already. BUT that means i actually get 2 Focus so lets get this party started
so we’re now entering into the New Umbraroot Arc which Frightens me on a deep and intrinsic scale because now i have no padding to ready me for whatever the Hell is going to occur, but i do know it will be gay(er) than the current content was (is/shall be) and here’s the proof
It had only been a day, but the sound of Cinder’s voice was a relief to Glynda’s senses.
glynda that’s gay. hey. hey. glynda have u been told yr a lesbian. lesbeeb. besbion--
“Not at all.” Thank god. It was one thing to be traveling with Cinder Fall. It was entirely another to have her checking in on Glynda’s well-being.
cinder: my well-being is SHIT but thankfully there’s someone nearby doing WORSE than me, which makes me feel better at least,
“Oh.” Our sounded strange in her mouth.
my favourite thing abt any gay media and content is that it’s gay in ways that hettie(tm) nonsense can only dream of being. when a story is abt a guy and a gal all the romantic tension comes from like. looking at a tiddy or getting naked or w/e the shit. here? it’s literally found entirely in the use of the word our. such power. i love it.
I went from unknown to one of Atlas’ most wanted overnight, which is charming… And also annoying, because they refuse to stop pasting wanted posters on every street corner.
i feel like cinder is the type of bitch to send pics of them back to emerald like ‘is my face ACTUALLY that janky??? my hair is a state. you think they’ll use a selfie if i ask nicely???’
Cinder hummed, affirmative. “Which would be unnecessary, if you hadn’t reported me.”
Glynda returned, “I wouldn’t have reported you if you hadn’t been committing a crime.”
glynda you snitch. you narc. you bootlicker. does be gay do crime mean NOTHING to you,
We left a funny taste in her mouth, almost as strange as when Cinder had said our. She tried not to examine it too closely.
again. look at this shit. this is real slowburn hours. this is how u DO IT.
Her heart was beginning to feel like a pin cushion with all the needles pulled out, little holes left in their wake.
would i be showing my age if i glanced at this and wondered if it were a reference to the inciting og offal hunt inspiration fic or. it does doesnt it. okay moving on.
“Okay.” And then, in an effort to change the subject to something lighter: “I’ve never broken into a country before.”
glynda’s complete and continuous inability to actually like. do what she plans on doing is SO funny to me. she’s going to be stealthy, she says, throwing a man aside in obvious fashion. i’m going to be subtle, she says, being as conspicuous as possible. she’s a disaster and i live for it.
"The Faunus." Cinder's voice was cold. "Don't speak to her."
this part of this fic is subtitled ‘cinder’s rank opinions time’, apparently. not that u can tell. but it is. dsfhgjsdfghjghfjdk
In the silence that followed, Glynda thought of the stunted horns jutting above Cinder's hairline at the restaurant.
Glynda murmured, "That’s a horrible thing to say."
"Don’t start." There was no concession in her words. “I mean it.”
“...I just didn’t expect that from you.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
There was something in Cinder’s tone that told Glynda that nothing she said would be correct. She said nothing.
cinder’s! rank! opinions! time! honestly this section victimises me the MOST as i very famously cried over an earlier section in which cinder thought abt all the faunus she grew up with, so i know that kc and diesel were looking to hurt me directly. that said i DO find it funny that cinder, yet again, looks like a pile of shit.  she can’t do anything right. naturally inclined to be the villain completely unintentionally. what a moron.
A harsh laugh. “What do you think we are, friends?”
“Well, no—um. Not really, but—”
YOU SEE. CINDER. PLEASE. £10 FOR U TO BEHAVE FOR FIFTEEN SECONDS.
“Then, just—just listen to me. I’m going to get us there. I p-promise.” There was a soft sound, like disgust or the prelude to a gag. “Urgh, your soul—give me more space.”
cinder: i’m inclined to being an asshole glynda: every time yr mean 2 me i’ll make u feel worse cinder: ah no. ah shit. i have to be nice??? ah fuck. what the shit is this.
Glynda thought of Ozpin. It wasn’t a comforting thought—more like the memory of a near-accident, like sliding on ice and feeling the world shift beneath you. It was a flinch-thought, and it would have made her miserable instead of just homesick had she not shut it out so quickly.
god the writing in this fic is so especially pristine. everything feels so real and visceral and you just know Exactly how that feels. it’s brilliantly punchy and i adore the way u get have the exact sensation click into place. it’s SO good.
She wondered if it was the same moon Bacia and Vivienne had looked upon. If they had felt the same beneath its pale light. The Great War had seen two shatterings of the moon, so perhaps it had appeared different, but… Glynda couldn’t help but wish that it was something they shared, even lifetimes apart.
👈😎👈
actually im a little nervous abt doing fingerguns because WHAT IF SMTHNG HAS CHANGED... but i think this bit is. safe. maybe. diesel. kc. am i safe,
Glynda closed her eyes and tried to feel out that instinctual power within her. Tried to know herself better. It resonated around her like a water in a tank, nearly palpable.
again this is just GREAT storytelling. i just LOVE how well kc and diesel turn abstract ideas into such physical manifestations it’s completely unreal. r y’all seein this shit???
upon checking his number, she’d discovered it had been blocked.
i love that glynda is abt as knowledgeable abt little jumps like this as the reader is. are we surprised as a reader? yes. is glynda also surprised? HELL YEAH SHE IS. SHE AIN’T GOT A FUCKIN CLUE MY DUDE.
Remembering the notes to herself not to trust Winter, Glynda opened the log hesitantly.
glynda no yr sending read receipts to yr future gf and thats a bad move on everybodys part
The indicator showed this wasn’t the first time Glynda had accessed the message. She couldn’t remember doing so.
OH NO BITCH U ALREADY DID
“Special Operative Schnee, things are…” Glynda paused, searching for something suitably vague to say. “Proceeding.
do you see what i mean abt glynda’s ineptitude. it’s slapstick levels of ridiculous and i’m living for it.
Do you suspect she’s attempting to cross the border?”
“Maybe.”
‘sure,’ glynda says. ‘you could word it like that if you wanted to.’
“Bold of her, if nothing else. She should know there will—” Glynda skimmed through the rest of the paragraph to reach the end, the corners of her mouth curling. “—can make arrangements. Let me know if there’s anything else you need.”
HGSDFGKHJSFDGHKJDF JESUS CHRIST
its like in fallout 4 when someone tells u important info and when u click past it the main character just goes ‘uh huh’ ‘yeah’ ‘okay’ ‘sure’ ‘mm-hm’ as the text boxes whizz by GLYNDA PLEASE
Bubbles appeared, showing that Cinder was typing. Glynda waited.
And waited.
And waited.
The bubbles appeared and disappeared four times.
She flipped back to Cinder’s conversation and found that, after all that time, Cinder had finally settled on a reply.
It said:
“Good.”
i just had to pair these up for a second if only to say: dis me lol
okay let’s double back for a second just to cover this Juicy Lore:
If you’d like, I can arrange a bouquet of flowers to be left at your mothers’ memorial site. My thoughts are with you.”
For a long moment, Glynda simply stared at the screen. [...] In quick succession, she realized that it had been sixteen days since she’d met with Cinder in the restaurant and that it was soon to be the anniversary of her mothers’ deaths.
WHAT IS THIS LORE MA’AM AND MX??? **MA’X**??? firstly idk what the HELL the Black March tragedy is but im fascinated but also: did u have to do that. can ONE person in this fic not have [spoilers redacted cant say that yet no sir] problems??? no??? die. dsfhjgghjkfsddf
Glynda picked herself up from the armchair, neat and tidy, and disassembled into bed, pulling the covers up to her throat. With her Semblance, she turned off the lights. She closed her eyes.
It was quiet. Cold. The only thing she felt was the weight of her soul.
Her Scroll buzzed. Glynda answered it.
“Glynda.” It was Cinder. “I can feel that.”
okay following on from cinder’s text message, i just. love that cinder’s having such direct repercussions to her shitty shitty actions. like this is all tying together in some 👈😎👈 instances but having cinder be her usual callous self and having to literally turn around and start fucking Being Nice For Once is VERY gratifying. fuck you you lil round-faced one-braincelled baby. time to learn to have some Manners. jgdsfghsdfghfjd
She’d simply resigned to the loneliness of having no one to trust but Cinder, and then, not even having her.
... thats gay. hey lads is that gay? its gay. it feels gay.
“This apology sucks.”
this feels like a reference to 👈👈👈😎👈👈👈 (IS IT. AM I RIGHT. IT IS ISNT IT) but also: LOOK AT CINDER GO. TRYING. BADLY. BUT TRYING. i love her she sucks so much shes such a dumbass. feel the consequences. feel them.
Glynda chided herself; Cinder Fall wasn’t capable of remorse, but she was more than capable of simple math. It seemed the worse she treated Glynda, the worse she herself would feel.
glynda: she’s doing this because it makes her feel better, not me cinder in like idk 20 chapters down the line:
Tumblr media
(i guess thats another 👈😎👈 moment but for GOOD REASON)
There was a shift, like Cinder was rolling over, or maybe propping herself up. Was she in bed also? It triggered the remembrance of Glynda’s own physicality, and she turned over as well, searching in the dark for the nightstand and the lamp upon it. The light clicked on. The room brightened. Glynda settled in, ready.
OOOOOH THE PARALLELS. glynda turning the lights off and sinking into darkness and the void versus perking up and sitting up and turning the lights on when talking to cinder!!!!!!! POETIC CINEMA. OOF. OOF. HOW DOES FIFTEEN POINTS OF LOVE TASTE.
“Great! Lovely. Glad to hear it.” Fangs rounded out the words like scissors. A pleasant sense of satisfaction unfurled in Glynda’s chest. “So, once upon a fucking time—”
there were two gays and they were enemies to lovers but didnt know it yet. but they will be.
THATS CHAPTER 14 BABEY!!!!!!!! i LOVED this chap and i can rly feel kc and diesel gearing up for umbraroot. its great being able to like. feel the shift of focus goin on here and im SO ready to see this arc play out. once again offal hunt is the best fic ever made. this is a fact.

Not My Type (Chapter 4)
Summary: “Do you know how you stop a craving? You give in to it.”
When she signed on to be a road manager, she had no idea it was going to be for one of the biggest bands in the world, much less how they were going to turn her life upside down, nor how she was about to flip theirs too. Especially one irritating frequently-late vocalist who knew exactly how charming he could be.
Pairing: Idol!Jimin / Manager!Original Character (I personally haven’t written in “y/n” format, so I just gave the reader a name, but barely even mention it)
Genre/Themes: fluff, angst, friends with benefits, friends to lovers
Rating: Starts off G, but M in later chapters
Status: Ongoing (Masterlist)
Tumblr media
The call came while they were touring Southeast Asia, a barely understandable voice on speakerphone from their management. But through the static, one word rang loud and clear - Grammy.
Joyous yelling rang through the hotel room as the boys jumped up and embraced one another, congratulating each other for a job well done. There were tears, and prayers, and weak knees, and an endless grateful chant of “Army, Army, Army”.
All the while, Anna stood off to the side, watching the ecstatic scene unfold from the doorway with a soft smile.
It had been a long road for them, filled with countless speed bumps and breakdowns. But through backbreaking hardworking and unquestionable resilience, they went from being a barely-known boy band hardly taken seriously, to one of the biggest acts in the world.
Now, this - nominated for, and performing at the Grammy Awards, the most prestigious honor in the industry.
The weeks leading up to the awards ceremony were a whirlwind of press and rehearsals. The boys were tugged every which way - a photoshoot here, an interview there, and a sprinkling of rehearsals whenever they could in the evenings.
Anna tried her best to find pockets of rest for the boys, all of whom were far too gracious to complain. She had offered countless times to push back an interview or a photoshoot, but they waved off her concerns. They claimed to have an endless well of energy, running off the high of the awards season. But it had been several consecutive evenings that she exited her shower to find a slumbering Jimin tucked in the middle of her bed.
As was now their routine, he’d let himself in with his spare key of her hotel room, and hang around while she finished work. Some days, he’d pester her like a petulant child needing attention. But other days, he’d laid there quietly and listen to music.
She never woke him up, only gently nudging him to give her some space. He always complied, scooting slightly to make room for her under the sheets.
More often than not, they slept quietly side by side, with Jimin leaving silently in the morning to sleep again in his own room. But there have been a handful of times when she woke up mere inches from his face, close enough that she wasn’t sure if the hair on tickling her forehead were hers or his.
And of course, the one morning they don’t talk about - when she woke up far too warm, owing to the startling fact that they had managed to become entangled in the night. He had his back to her, her arms were around his torso, hands shackled to his chest. Before she could gently pull her arms away, her phone went off with her morning alarm.
Jimin’s eyes fluttered open, and upon registering their position, eased himself from her. Neither acknowledged it from fear of making things awkward. So instead, he rubbed his eyes and slowly rolled off the bed, muttering about seeing her at breakfast, as she grabbed her towel to take a quick shower.
If they thought that the prelude to Grammys was a storm, it would be nothing compared to the expected hurricane of the actual awards day.
But not on her watch.
The nit-picky manager got up at the crack of dawn to scarf down some breakfast and get the ball rolling. She made a bazillion calls, confirmed the schedule of Rolling Stone who was doing a behind-the-scenes video on the band, approved the cars they’ll be riding, rounded up the staff, and checked on the breakfast spread set up for the boys in a private function room.
By the time that they were up, fed, and showered, she had a hotel suite prepared, with the makeup artists set up in one room, and the stylists and wardrobes (all steamed and hung to perfection) set up in another.
“Wow.” Namjoon whistled when the bleary-eyed boys stepped into the room.
They were used to crazy. They were used to messy. They were used to last-minute, rushed insanity. But there was none of that today.
In a precision only rivaled by the military, the staff descended upon their designated Bangtan boy, whisking them away to be dressed and prepped. Barely having to lift a finger, they had their suits on, hair fixed, makeup done, contacts popped in, and accessories in place by the time Rolling Stone came knocking at the door to do a quick interview and photoshoot for an online feature.
“Why aren’t you dressed?” Jimin whispered to her as she ushered the editorial staff into the common area of the en suite.
It had been a few hours since they had last seen each other. Once the boys were taken away by their respective glam teams, she was nowhere to be found.
Not that he was checking though, Jimin thought to himself.
“What?” The preoccupied girl replied, only half listening as she signaled the boys to take their places on the couch.
“I said, why aren’t you dressed?” Jimin repeated.
Finally, she looked at him, blinking twice to force her brain to shift attention.
“Dressed for what?” She tilted her head in confusion as his words registered in her one-track mind.
“For…the Grammys?” He frowned at her in equal confusion, gesturing to her outfit. Don’t get him wrong, she looked great in her blazer and distressed jeans combo. But one would expect something slightly more...elevated for an event such as this.
Now they were just having a stand-off of confusion, as her eyes grew even more befuddled.
“I’m not going.” She said, absent-mindedly pressing a hand to the small of his back to nudge him to join the others on the couch.
“What do you mean you’re not going?” He turned slightly to hiss at her.
“I mean, I’m not attending the Grammys.” She reiterated, irritation lacing her tone. I’m not invited.”
Jimin stopped in his tracks as his shoes scuffed against the carpet. She reached out to help him right himself, but he caught himself in time and, in a fluid movement that was more characteristic of him, Jimin turned back to her with wide, confused eyes. Interestingly, the other boys looked equally slack-jawed.
“What do you mean,” Taehyung broke the silence, emphasizing each word. “That you’re not invited?”
“That I’m not invited.” She repeated once more, patiently this time, aware that they were within earshot of the Rolling Stone editorial team. “There’s a staff headcount - essentials only. You’ll have the usuals with you - your stylists, your makeup artists, and a PA.”
“But not you.” Yoongi said. Not a question, but a statement.
“No,” She affirmed. “Not me. My job tonight ends when you guys get into those cars.”
She chuckled, already looking forward to a nice quiet evening alone. It had been a while since she had one of those. But then a realization dawned on her, her brain following the line of questioning that she was receiving.
“You’ll have dedicated on-ground staff to help you around, so there’ll be no problems.” She was quick to assure them, thinking their concern was for their well-being. “I’m already in contact with them, so if there are any issues, they, or you guys can just give me a call.”
Seokjin frowned at her. “But why won’t you be with us? It doesn’t make sense.”
She frowned back at the eldest member, at all of them. “Because I won’t be.”
She didn’t know what else to say. There was really no other explanation. When she got into a call with Manager Sejin to settle the details and the personnel headcount, the veteran said she could have the evening off and send one of the other staffers to escort them instead. In her mind, that was the right move anyway, as those who had been with them for a long time were more deserving to attend the festivities than she was.
Before the boys could react any further, the Rolling Stone team cued them for the camera and the interviewer began to make small talk to ease them into the conversation.
The interview came and went smoothly, with the boys accommodating a few extra photos for the online feature (“The Army always loves getting new photos” Jimin said, ever eager to please and feed their adoring fanbase). Then the 6 boys took turns practicing their prepared English answers with Namjoon.
With the interview over with, the young manager took this time to step out and make a few calls - one to have the drivers pull up the cars, and a couple more to the on-ground staff meant to escort them throughout the Grammys. But what she thought would only take a few minutes ended up being a solid half an hour. She sighed, realizing she had been gone too long and wasn’t able to help the boys practice their English.
On her way back to the hotel suite, a familiar number rang her phone. She didn’t quite like what she was told on the other end.
“What do you think you’re doing?” The infuriated girl barked out the moment she reentered the room. Jimin, who was closest to the door and holding his phone to his ear, jolted in surprise.
“What’s wrong?” Namjoon asked from over his makeup artist’s shoulder.
“Why did I just get a call from Manager Sejin saying that you guys have been calling him, asking him to pull some strings so that I can come?” She accused no one in particular, even though Manager Sejin dropped some names over the phone.
She took the time to look at each member, daring them to look her in the eyes and provide an answer. But all of the first 6 faces she turned to averted to a certain Park Jimin.
“It just feels weird that you’re not coming with us,” Jimin answered quietly on behalf of the group. She coughed roughly, prompting him to meet her hard gaze. She wasn’t satisfied with his answer.
In a flash, Jimin’s eyes hardened into a penetrating gaze, transforming his boyish features into a  fatal weapon. An angry Park Jimin, looking equal parts dangerous and beautiful, was not for the faint of heart.
“Manager Sejin came with us to everything. So you should too, right?” He asserted, as if accusing her of not completing her tasks. She scoffed at the insinuation.
“Jimin.” Namjoon warned, forcing the younger boy to check himself.
He took a deep breath and looked down at his shoes, taking a few moments to gather his thoughts. She waited patiently, biting her tongue to keep the acidic words at bay. When he finally lifted his head to look back at her, his eyes were back to usual kind nature.
“It just doesn’t seem fair that you put in all this work for us, and yet you don’t get to go with us.” Jimin reasoned, shifting uncomfortably in his custom Gucci suit.
Feeling the beginnings of a smile tease her lips, she bit her lower lip to keep from breaking her serious facade.
“If that’s your reason for insisting that I come, then the entire team should come as well.” She replied. Jimin began to groan, but refrained when she cut him off with a hand. “I have my instructions - to help you get ready, then send you off on your way. That’s all my job requires of me. Going to parties and award ceremonies are technically out of my scope.”
He furrowed a brow at her. “Since when did you count what is and isn’t part of the job?”
“Since…always?” She widened her eyes, confused by the trajectory of the conversation. “Because at the end of the day, this is a job.”
Jimin recoiled from her like she might as well have slapped him.
“A job.” He repeated quietly, as if she wasn’t meant to hear it. But the words rang clear in the too-still room. “That’s all this is, right?”
Blood rushed to her ears at the implication of his words. His silvery eyes snapped to hers, and the world froze over. Suddenly, the room was too small, everything was too loud, and the Earth was burning under her feet.
She opened her mouth to defend herself, but found that no words slipped out. He had her under a spell, his sharp gaze pinned her arms down to her sides, and her thoughts fizzled into nothingness.
Then, without warning, he released her, turning around to grab his phone which had been discarded on a nearby table.
Neither the boys nor she brought it up again.
When it was time, she herded them down a service elevator that brought them directly to the parking lot where the cars were already running.
“So what will you do?” Jimin asked quietly as he waited for his turn to board the car. She had reached up instinctively to fix his askew bowtie.
She hummed in question, eyes focused on making the bow perfectly straight.
“Tonight, I mean.” He clarified. “Since you won’t be with us.”
Happy with the bowtie now, she glanced up to meet his gaze. “Once you guys leave, I’ll get into my comfiest pajamas, order some room service, and watch the show on TV from the comfort of my bed.”
Her cheeky answer pried a warm smirk from him, albeit begrudgingly. Jimin smiled down at her, the tension from earlier already forgotten. He nodded, humming his noncommittal approval, before hopping into the luxury SUV.
As the cars drove by and disappeared up the tunnel leading into the main street, Anna released the deep sigh she didn’t realize she was holding.
Her job was done for the night. The on-ground team would take good care of them, she was on everybody’s speed dial, and if all else failed, Namjoon always knew what to do.
True to her word, she took a long soak in the tub, keeping tabs on them via the live stream on her phone, and 10-minute updates from the on-ground team. She carefully held the phone up to her face, scowling when she spied Jimin’s semi-tousled hair.
“That boy just can’t keep his hands from his hair.” She sighed, glaring at the video on her screen. But it wasn’t a big deal, really. A few locks of hair fell onto his forehead, which he brushed away occasionally. The third time he did this, licking his lower lip as he did, she realized it was intentional.
Damn this sexy fucker. He knows exactly what he’s doing.
When the show was about to start and her fingers were beginning to prune up, she climbed out of the tub and changed into some comfortable clothes which consisted of heinously over-sized sweatpants and the Chimmy shirt (the latter she only realized much later on). Then she ordered dinner from room service (today’s achievements called for a medium-well steak and a glass of wine) and settled into her sheets.
The boys did well in their performance of their nominated song, although she had come to expect nothing less than perfection from them. Sadly though, they didn’t win. But if the screaming that shook the building when they were announced during the nominees’ roll call and the adoration that instantly flooded social media were anything to go by, BTS were loved on an unparalleled level.
In many ways, they have already won.
As she was typing up a consolation message in the group chat, her phone pinged, alerting her of another text.
PJM: “Sorry we didn’t win.”
She couldn’t stop the smile that took over, and quickly typed out a reply. “Don’t be sorry. We are all so proud of you.”
His reply was equally instantaneous.
PJM: “Wish you were here.”
Her heart stuttered, unsure what to make of it. But she shook her head, knowing better.
This was Jimin. His default setting was flirt. He could go from mochi-cute to i-will-seduce-you in 0.05 seconds flat. She knew better than to overthink it. So she placed a hand over her racing heart, willing it to have some control, before she typed out a neutral response.
“You’ll survive without me for a night. See you tomorrow!”
There, that was pretty neutral. Right?
“Come on, put your phone down.” Namjoon said to the frowning boy next to him. Jimin had been fixated on his phone for a while, almost as if he could get it to melt in his hand. “Who is so important for you to text anyway that it can’t wait until after?”
“Nothing, hyung.” Jimin grumbled, grudgingly stuffing his phone back into his pocket.
It was undeniable that the boys were heartbroken to have lost. But getting nominated was an achievement in and of itself, Namjoon reminded the members. Some artists don’t even get nominations throughout their entire careers. Yet, here they were, shoulder to shoulder as equals with the world’s biggest and most respected musical acts. They had come a long way, and that’s what they should remember.
“Why aren’t you dancing?” Yoongi asked from Jimin’s other side, pointing at the dance floor. Jimin shrugged and rolled his sleeves up, not giving a verbal answer.
They were at a posh Grammy afterparty hosted by some big artist that Jimin can’t remember through his intoxicated haze. He had downed one too many drinks too quickly.
Somewhere in the throng of drunk celebrities and sweaty socialites were Jungkook, Taehyung, and Hoseok, probably dancing their giddy butts off along with some of their staff who they had “dismissed” for the night. Jimin was too warm to join them at the moment. Jin wandered off a few minutes ago, in search of another bottle of wine. Namjoon and Yoongi were relaxing in their designated booth, both a little tired from all the social interactions they’ve had to do that day.
“You did well today, hyung. As usual.” Jimin turned to Namjoon, shifting the topic of conversation.
“Nah, we all did well.” Namjoon, ever humbly replied. “I barely had to talk this time. Everyone got to give their answers, and I didn’t have to translate much this time.”
“But you still had to talk a lot. And they asked questions we didn’t prepare for.” Yoongi chimed in.
As he planned, the conversation steered away from Jimin’s sour mood as the two older members began to discuss the events of the show. Eventually, Jin returned with not one, not two, but three bottles of alcohol. How and where he managed to swipe them from was a mystery, but they all drank without question.
They got more and more intoxicated as the evening wore on. Jimin had the good sense to stop drinking when he started to see two Yoongis beside him.
“Hey, handsome.” A warm voice called into his ear, cutting through the pounding dance music.
Jimin and his fellow members turned to find a beautiful blonde woman standing behind their couch. She had an American accent, or at least Jimin thought so, and she looked vaguely familiar so he figured that he was supposed to know who she was. But he was five too many drinks for his brain to conjure up any memories, so he played it safe and flashed her a killer smile. The sexy smirk one, not the cute one.
“This might be a bit forward, but wanna dance?” She offered, extending a dainty hand for him to take.
Jimin wasn’t sure he should take it. After all, he could barely remember her name at the moment. But before he could make up his mind, Jin answered for him.
“Yes, he wants to dance.” Without warning, his hyungs pulled him up and shoved him in the blonde’s direction.
Like a cobra ready to strike, the vixen grasped his hand and led him through the throng of sweltering bodies swaying on the dance floor. Once they reached a small clearing in the center, she pressed her body flush against Jimin’s and danced.
Dancing with her was fun, Jimin decided through the alcohol-induced fog. She moved well with the music, swaying her hips and flipping her hair gracefully with every beat. She was funny too, cracking jokes here and there, always a breath away from his ear.  And she didn’t mind his hands on her waist, touching lightly enough to feel but not tight enough to hold. In fact, it only served to encourage her as she stepped closer to him until he could see every mascara-ed eyelash over her bright blue eyes.
She was close. So close. He just had to move maybe an inch more until there was nothing between them.
She was beautiful. He was lucky and he should want this.
But at that moment, his stupid mind decided to activate. And for whatever goddamn reason, it made him think of her.
Her - the infuriating girl who sassed him again today, and fought their valiant attempts to reward her with what she deserved, She was probably in those sweatpants she always wore to bed after a long day. Did her feet ache from being in heels all day? Did she have a good dinner? Did she get mad at how he messed with his hair?
His drunken imagination went into hyper-drive, conjuring an image of his feisty road manager in her hotel room, eating room service and watching the festivities through a screen.
All of a sudden, Jimin felt sick.
An emergency switch flicked on in his head and drained the alcohol from his system. In a split second, he was astoundingly sober that it gave him an agonizing whiplash. Before he could second-guess himself, Jimin leaned away from the woman before him. He allowed himself to stay in her space, trying to seem subtle, but at least now, he could breathe his own air instead of hers.
She eyed him curiously, feeling the shift between them.
“Thank you, but I have to go.” He smiled at her apologetically, stumbling over his words. Without waiting for a response, he untangled himself from her and exited the dance floor quickly.
It took him a moment to reorient himself and find their booth, but his fellow members were all nowhere to be found. Throwing all care to the wind, he got up on a chair to see above the crowd, eventually spotting Namjoon’s head bobbing up and down as he danced in a far off corner with Hoseok and Jin.
With a sigh, Jimin rushed to grab his coat from their booth, then barrelled his way through the crowd until he reached his friends.
“Hyung!” He yelled at Namjoon to cut through the deafening noise. The taller boy peered down at him, eyes wide to show that he was paying attention.
“Can I borrow the car?” Jimin continued.
“Why?” The leader asked.
“Um…I’m heading back.” He tried to keep his answer vague, but Namjoon’s knowing smile let Jimin know that he knew what he meant. Thankfully though, he didn’t ask any questions. He simply gave Jimin his phone to copy the driver’s number.
After a grateful hug, Jimin quickly exited the club. The night air hit him harshly, cooling his burning skin and drying the sweat from his brow. His heart pounded, god knows why, as he impatiently waited for the car to arrive.
For whatever reason Jimin couldn’t yet fathom, it felt like they couldn’t get to the hotel fast enough. His pulse roared in his ears, and the traffic was taunting him despite it being in the wee hours of the morning. He tapped his foot anxiously, fingers picking at nonexistent lint off his suit. Just as they pulled up to the hotel, he checked the time on his phone. It was almost 3 in the morning.
Why did he need to get back so quickly anyway?
He scolded himself in the elevator, surveying his reflection in the mirrored walls. He looked a little worse for wear, his hair sticking out in weird places, his eye shadow faded from sweat and his eyeliner slightly smudged. But he wasn’t entirely a wreck.
The elevator slowed to a stop and opened with a ding. Jimin stepped out on their floor, dragging his aching legs under him. It seemed like the effects of the day crashed down on him all at once, coupled with the after-effects of alcohol. But while his body ached for rest, it instinctively led him to her door.
She’s probably asleep.
He thought this, but couldn’t stop himself from knocking anyway. One knock. Two knocks. Three.
The silence that followed was deafening. Jimin sighed, once again reprimanding himself for being so pathetic. But before he could even take a step back, sounds of movement carried over to his side of the door. His heart raced in anticipation, and the world slowed as the doorknob turned.
He was right about her. She was in sweatpants. But nothing could have prepared him for the Chimmy shirt she was wearing.
It was stupid, right? He was surrounded by beautiful people all night, dressed in priceless jewels and designer clothing. Yet, here he was, having his breath stolen by a girl with messy bed-hair, in lousy sweatpants and a cartoon shirt she didn’t even own.
Yeah, really stupid.
“Jimin.” She greeted once the initial wave of confusion passed. She looked over his shoulder, then down the hall, in search of the other members. “Are you guys back already? I thought you’d be out until later this morning.”
“No, it’s just me.” He shrugged, already inviting himself into her room. It was second nature already at this point, to make himself at home in her space.
She closed the door behind him and watched from the entryway as he sauntered through her room. The ceiling lights were off, but the bedside lamps were on, casting the room in an incandescent glow that painted his pale skin gold.
Jimin eased out his jacket with a grace that was probably illegal, and somewhat impressive given his state, then draped it at the back of a chair.
“What are you up to?” He asked, surveying the room as he removed his bowtie.
The evidence of her dinner had long been collected by the hotel staff, but she had an open bag of chips and some hot chocolate by her bedside table. The TV was switched on to Netflix, showing that she was halfway through a romcom. But the open book on her side of the bed told Jimin that she only put it on for white noise.
“Nothing much.” She shrugged, crawling back into bed. “Just trying to make myself fall asleep.”
Jimin nodded, humming absently to acknowledge her answer (even though he already hypothesized it on his own), as he popped open the top three buttons of his shirt. He quickly glanced at her as she pressed play on the movie and took up her book again, then turned his back to her to undo his belt. He shed off his shoes, socks, and rings as well, then walked into her bathroom to take off his makeup with her makeup remover.
She was already immersed in her book by the time he exited the bathroom, sufficiently fresh-faced, looking more like a boy next door than an ever-trending popstar.
Jimin plopped down on the other side of the bed, which at this point had become his unofficial side, and turned up the volume to figure out what the movie was. He knew she didn’t mind it, always too single-minded once she started reading something. They stayed like that, each in their own little world, alone but together.
“Congrats on the awesome performance, by the way.” She broke the quiet, eyes not leaving her book. Jimin turned the TV’s volume down, and turned to look at her. She was seated up with her back against the headboard while he was already fully lying down, so he had to tilt his neck to properly see her.
“I mean, you guys always do well,” She continued, setting her book down once she felt his eyes on her. “But still.”
He smirked. “Thanks.”
“Oh, and the camera got this really cool shot of you with your hair.” She did a poor imitation of how he combed his hair back with his fingers. “It was super sexy.”
The words slipped out before she could help them, but the way he smiled - eyes turning into thin crescents and sparkling teeth all exposed - were enough to make her feel like the embarrassment was worth it.
“You think I’m sexy?” He teased, immediately melting his warm eyes into a smolder. Even without the contacts and the eye makeup, it was still damn effective. She groaned.
“You know you are. Don’t play innocent.” She rolled her eyes, feigning nonchalance. He chuckled lightly but didn’t press her, turning the volume back up.
Jimin only snapped back to attention when he heard her light snores. The movie was just about to end when he heard her deep breathing pass heavily through her nose and out of her mouth. She had fallen asleep while sitting upright, her head drooping down to her chest while her book lay open on her lap.
Without a second thought, he rolled off the bed and turned the TV off. Then he rounded the bed to her side and slowly eased her down to lay properly under the sheets. She slightly stirred in his arms as he maneuvered her, but relaxed at the sound of his voice shushing her back to slumber. Once her head settled into the pillow, she turned on her side and sank into a deep sleep. Jimin chuckled to himself and carefully pulled the covers over her.
Resisting the urge to linger, arguing with himself that only creeps do that, he stepped back to turn the bedside lamps off and draw the heavy drapes over the windows.
Then came a knock on the door.
Curious, Jimin grabbed his phone to check the time - it was a little past 5 in the morning already. Who could possibly come knocking at his hour?
A quick peek into the peephole, followed by a swift yet silent opening of the door revealed Namjoon and Jungkook, both looking disheveled and pale, but otherwise sober.
“Hey,” Jimin greeted, eyeing his brothers with concern. “Did you just get back? Are you okay?”
“Yeah, we’re good.” Jungkook smiled. “We just wondered where you were. You never texted that you arrived already, and you weren’t answering your door. So we just wanted to be sure you didn’t die somewhere.”
“No worries.” Jimin reassured. “You good?”
“Yeah, yeah. Everyone’s good; they’re back in their rooms. We just wanted to check on you.” Namjoon smirked. “What are you doing here anyway?”
“The usual,” He shrugged casually. “We hung out. She’s already asleep.”
“Alright then.” Namjoon replied, stepping away from the door to signal that they were leaving. “See you tomorrow.”
Jimin nodded and bid them good night, then shut the door quietly behind him.
No one spoke of, nor acknowledged, the fact that Jimin did not go back to sleep in his room.

[ Frozen Flames and Shadowed Lights || Chapter Nine ] [ @yukaikokoro @abyssaldespair ] [ Hatake Kakashi, Kottakawa Kumiko ] [ Verse: Divine Light ] [ Previous || Next ]
Come morning, things aren’t...quite as tense. Rousing slowly, Kumiko finds Kakashi already awake, seated on his side and pulling on his boots.
Seems he’s eager to get back to the road.
...frankly, so is she. He clearly isn’t ready to chat, so having some riding to do in the meantime will be easier than just sitting around.
With the room already paid for, the pair pack up their gear, double checking their saddles and mounting up. Their pace is slow as they make for the front gate. Not unlike its slums, the clearer parts of the war-torn city are crowded, and hold a lingering anxious energy. Apparently there’s still unease given how back-and-forth the territory has been over the years.
Funny...she didn’t notice it as much on the way south to the Summit. Maybe, in at least some ways...he’s right.
There’s much she has yet to learn.
Soon enough hooves clopping against cobblestone are muffled in mud, the roads still sloppy from the night’s rain. Even now, the sky is overcast, and Kumiko can’t help but find it fitting. But the clouds are wispy, carried swiftly by wind and not weighed by unshed rain. Along the surface, the wind is cool, but the height of Summer means even a rainy day can’t be too biting. They’re not quite far north enough for that, yet. Odds are the weather will clear by midday and they’ll have sunlight bearing on their backs.
For the longest time, the only sounds are hoofsteps and the subtle groan of leather saddles, accented by the clink of metal and the occasional equine snort. Normally they’d each find the silence of a trip easing, but...the heavy thoughts and unspoken words seem to weigh on them and snatch the calm, replacing it with a moody tension.
Come nightfall, they’ve made good distance in spite of the soggy terrain, and find a relatively mudless spot a ways off the road. Kakashi finds enough dry wood and tinder to light a fire with a spark of ven, and they sink into yet another silence.
“...do you want me to tell you you were right?”
Mismatched eyes flicker up from watching the flames, instead studying her face. “...it’s never a bad thing to hear,” he replies, tone blithe. “But that’s not my point.”
“Then what is?”
Sighing, Kakashi drags a hand down his face. Now, without temper, he has time to think. To phrase. “...you have a certain degree of naivety that comes with the territory of your birth and your position. I don’t blame you for it,” he offers, seeing her make to cut in and raising a hand to beg silence. “...rather, I was hoping you’d trust someone who - unlike yourself - has spent many years on the road. I know what I’m doing in ways you just can’t. Which isn’t your fault. You’re the only child of a leader, you’re going to be sheltered. Sure, you gallivant around your city, but there’s always a degree of separation, if I had to guess. A guard, a hidden tail...you’ve never been exposed to the world the way I have.
“So when I gave you the warning before we reached the city, I expected you to listen. I know the place, I know the people, I know their nature. I realize you’re optimistic. Driven to do the right thing. Believe me, Ryū’s the same way. I know that type. But you have to temper it with knowledge and clear judgment. The Theran territory has been traded around more than once. The people there are almost more refugees than citizens. They’re poor, they’re crowded, and they’re desperate. The ruse of using a child to bait the kind-hearted is nothing new. But even when I told you no a second time, you insisted. You can’t ignore my insight.
“True, I have a lot to learn from you about the world you know, where we’re going. But this? Where we are now? This is my expertise. And if the pair of us are going to make it to Boralis alive, let alone what’s beyond it...you have to trust me.”
After a pause, Kumiko releases a breath she didn’t realize she was holding as a sigh. “...you’re right. And I do trust you, Kakashi. Maybe I am a bit naive. Maybe, in a way, Nori was right...I’m not yet fit to bear the mantle I’ve taken on…”
Kakashi doesn’t interrupt her thoughts, watching her silently.
“...but I’ll try harder. I’ll listen next time. It was a hard lesson to learn, but I needed it.” She gives a wry grin. “Sometimes the only way to change a Glacirian’s mind is to knock some sense into it.”
“Well, here’s hoping there won’t be any more of it - from me, or anyone else. I’d rather you have your wits about you, hm?”
“Yeah.” A pause is filled with the crackle of burning wood. “...so, I guess I still owe you an apology.”
“It’s accepted,” he replies, waving it away like smoke. “All I wanted was for you to realize your mistake, and learn from it. And I’m sure I’ll make my own once we’re further north, so don’t lose hope on getting your turn to lecture me.”
That makes her laugh. “I think political mishaps are a bit less deadly than ones out here, hm?”
“Depends on who I manage to offend,” Kakashi replies dryly, lips quirking. “...but, for now, we better get some rest. Still another few days to the border.”
“Yes...and given our need to take the trade route, we’ll need to start veering east, soon. We’ll also rise in elevation a good bit, so it’ll get cold fast.”
“I’ll consult the map in the morning when my mind’s fresh. Won’t do me much good as I am, now.”
“Understood.”
“So, I’ll take first watch - that way I won’t be groggy come time to navigate.”
Nodding, Kumiko adjusts her bedroll a bit before laying upon her side, watching the shadows dancing on the trees, cast by the campfire behind her. With the disagreement settled, she manages to slip into sleep within minutes.
Once their route is planned come morning, the two of them ride with new vigor in their pace. Even the horses seem to sense a hurdle’s been passed, and three days see them to the border. The warm weather appears to fade behind them, and a cool, muggy atmosphere rises. By the time they reach the beginning of the true north, snow dusts the ground, which admittedly boggles the hunter’s brain a bit, given the Summer nights just a few weeks prior. A small town - relying mostly on the traders stopping before the next leg of their journey - holds an inn the pair hunker down in for the night.
“It’ll be a good two days’ ride, maybe almost three to reach Boralis,” Kumiko reports. Stationed at a window, she holds back the curtains, watching the terrain to the north. A subtle furrow wrinkles her brow. “...that is, if the weather holds up.”
“Seemed pretty clear today,” Kakashi replies, laying out their supplies and making note of what to buy in the morning before they set off. His regular clothes have been packed away, exchanged for the lined ones Suigin gave him before he left.
“True...but the north is fickle. Best to assume the worst while hoping for the best.”
“Well, surely nothing to worry about with Glaciris’ own chosen leading us, hm?” Kakashi replies, rolling up his list and starting to pack up. “Surely you can make us an igloo if need be.”
Kumiko can’t help a dry snort. “Glaciris didn’t choose me,” she murmurs, a hint of bitterness in her tone. “The elders did. Glaciris hasn’t been with us - truly with us - since the Elementals fled after the rift.”
“Well, still...surely the elders of a people like yours knew who they were sending to the Elemental Summit…?” he retorts. “All I’m saying is, I doubt I could be in any better company for this particular leg of the trek.”
Glancing to Kakashi with mild curiosity, Kumiko can’t help a light dusting of pink on her cheeks, like the frost on the window panes. “...that’s quite the compliment.”
“I don’t hand those out freely.” Tying his rucksack closed, Kakashi looks to her mildly. “I haven’t known many ice mages, but you seem worth your salt.”
“...thank you. You’re not too bad yourself, wanderer.”
“We’ll see how I handle the north. Maybe then I can be called a skilled wanderer. This is a new challenge. I might fail, yet.”
“...you can’t,” she replies softly. “You’ve too much to fight for. You, if nothing else, will keep us driving forward.”
“...I’ll do my best.”
As he turns in for the night, Kumiko decides instead to take time to meditate: something most el’ven practice to help balance their energies and ensure a clear mind...and a clear mind means less chance to go awry.
There’s a lingering, funny sensation in her gut...a wariness that seems to prelude something going wrong. There’s no true reason she can give for it - just a gut feeling she can’t shake. Kakashi is right, they’re about as prepared as they can be. And she doesn’t doubt her own abilities. Then why…?
Sighing, she sits atop her bed and does her best to clear her mind, tuning herself to the interior rather than the exterior. Maybe it will help her find the root of this...feeling.
Soon enough, her breathing slackens, evening out as her muscles go lax. The whirling of her mind calms from flurries of snowflakes to a calm field of powder.
...but her foreboding remains.
Ever so slightly, her brow draws, a small wind kicking up snow. Something is coming...she knows it in her very bones. Worry begins to build again. What if she isn’t ready? What if she isn’t enough? What if -?
Like a thick blanket, something seems to settle over her. A calm, but...it’s not her own. Yet it smothers her feelings of doubt. It isn’t words, or images, just...a presence. Like an old friend assuring her she’ll be all right. A feeling of nostalgia overcomes her, and yet...nothing about this is consciously familiar.
Part of her is wary. This feeling - this resolution - isn’t her own. Then where is it coming from…? An older, wiser part of herself she’s not yet met? Or is it truly something beyond herself? But...that’s impossible. The only beings that can connect minds to minds are drach, and she doubts there’s any nearby. And this presence, this...being isn’t crisp and sharp like her connection to Raziya. As close as they are now compared to, say, the Luxerian capital of Salustia, she still could never connect to her kirav with this many miles yet between them. But this hazy, vague impression does indeed feel far and away. Like something reaching across a great distance to touch her.
Slowly, icy eyes open to find herself released from her mind and instead looking back at the room in the inn. The calm from before still lingers, along with knowledge. There’s a challenge they’ve yet to face, but...when it comes, they’ll be ready.
She’ll be ready.
...or so she hopes.
For once, she’s the first one awake, snatching Kakashi’s list and heading out herself. Cloaked and hood drawn, her breath plumes in freezing clouds, exchanging coin for everything he’s made note of. It should be enough - combined with what they have - to see them comfortably to Boralis.
...if all goes well.
Pack full, she returns to their room and finds him awake. Wordlessly, they sort out supplies between them to equal their load.
“Ready?”
“As I’ll ever be.”
Horses fetched, they give their gear one last check before mounting up and stepping onto the well-worn road of the trade route.
The immediate terrain is mostly flat, broken by a few swells of small hills, banks, and valleys. Though typically free of snow this time of year to reveal a grassy plain, a dusting of white makes it look even more two-dimensional. Few rocks or trees break up the monotony. Pockets of water occasionally dot the tundra landscape, and in the distance they can see the smudges of the Gelidan mountains.
Kumiko can’t help but feel two emotions: a relief at being so near home again...and yet the lingering foreboding of what’s waiting for them out here. Weather, beasts, bandits...it could be anything.
But for now, the road is only dusted with snow, and the sky is a clear, crisp blue. The air at this elevation is starkly chilled, but with their heavier garments neither of them really feel it.
“So, what sort of animals call this part of the continent home?” Kakashi asks to try and break up the silence.
“Well...there’s quite a few smaller ones,” she offers, glad for the distraction. “Mostly rodents like rabbits, mice, voles...and then the things that hunt them. Birds of prey, foxes, weasels. A few bigger creatures like elk and caribou are prey for things like bears and wolves, but they tend to stick more west where there’s tree cover during the rougher seasons. The plains are more their Summer homes, so...we might see some, but it seems things are getting chilly early this year.” Autumn is still, officially, a few weeks away...but the north is often unpredictable. “We’ll hit more forested land before we reach Boralis - this plain will see us for the first day, day and a half. Then we’ll get into the foothills where the capital sits, and there will be more trees and shrubland. The places we’ll have to worry most about are the mountains, but...well, I have a plan, there.”
Kakashi deadpans. “Well...reaching the capital will be nice. I’m not a fan of open spaces, myself...feels too exposed.”
“I know what you mean,” Kumiko agrees dryly. “The sooner we get to a more covered landscape, the safer I’ll feel. The winds can get wicked out here, and there’s few to no places to take shelter.”
The morning passes slowly, Kakashi occasionally needling Kumiko for more information about her homeland. It’s...nice. In all reality, it’s been so long since she’s talked to an outsider. Someone unfamiliar with the northern country. To be able to give the information freely to a mind that doesn’t yet know it gives her a new kind of vigor. Hours tick by unnoticed as she waxes on about Glaciris’ lands.
...but the afternoon brings her pleasant mood swiftly down.
Slow at first but building quickly, a northern wind begins pushing them from the front. Its breath is icy and bitter, and the pair snuggle down as best they can into their lined gear.
“Twelve,” Kakashi can’t help but swear under his breath, which plumes but swiftly scatters. “Where’d this squall come from?!”
“I told you the north is fickle!” Kumiko replies, having to shout over the wind. “Keep an eye out for a bank or a dip we can lay low in!”
With their horses keeping their heads bowed to the cutting air, they attempt to press on. Soon, flakes begin to flurry. The fresh snow clings to anything and everything. Even Kakashi’s eyebrows freeze over as the powder hits his skin, melt against the heat, and swiftly refreezes in the wind.
On they march, and Kumiko’s chest begins to hammer in desperation. Still no sign of a place to hunker down...damn these plains and their shapeless expanses! If they were one of the caravans, they’d have wagons to hide in and circle to protect their mounts...but here?
They’re alone, exposed, and running out of time.
Arm braced in front of her face and squinting through the weather, Kumiko barely hears a faint thud behind her. Kakashi’s gelding gives a distressed whinny, and with a turn she sees why.
Having slipped from his saddle, Kakashi lays in the road, motionless save for the wind whipping his clothing.
Heart leaping to her throat, Kumiko hurriedly dismounts, managing to catch both horses’ reins and pull them in together. “Kakashi!”
A hint of a groan carries through the wind.
Struggling against panic, Kumiko glances around. She can’t sense any other presence within her range. No one else is currently braving the storm, or at least anywhere near them. With some nervous urging, she manages to get the horses to lay down side by side, helping to create a small buffer. Then with a surge of ven, she brings up a curving wall of ice behind them, careful not to spook them. It cuts down some of the wind, but the killer chill remains. And she can’t hold its form forever - eventually, she’ll tire...especially as the wind eats at the ice.
Drawing Kakashi up with her to lean against her mount, Kumiko narrows her senses. His energy is dwindling to frightening levels, quickly being sapped in an attempt to stay warm. Even Obito’s gifted fire, usually resilient in el’ven bodies against cold, isn’t enough to waylay the frost. Its influence in a foreign body is too weak.
On the edge of dread, Kumiko draws him close, holding him to her chest and staring out into the storm beyond the curve of her ice. Even she, adjusted as she is to the north, can feel the bite of the cold locking up her body.
...this can’t be the end. It can’t...it can’t…! Teeth grit as if she can simply be stubborn enough to fend off the cold. They’ve come so far - together, and alone. Surely their paths go on from here. Kakashi has to save the lux mage...and she has to save her people. There’s so much she wants to do, yet. So much to accomplish...she can’t…
Hiding her face in the crook of Kakashi’s neck, she can feel his signature fading. He has a few minutes left, at best. And she won’t be far behind at this rate.
No...I can’t let us…
“Hold steady…”
Eyes snap open, unmoving. What...what was…?
“This is not your end, mor. You’ve a role yet to play. Open your heart to me...and I will grant you my strength.”
Barely daring to breathe, Kumiko hesitates. She doesn’t know this voice, and yet...it seems so...familiar…
It doesn’t take words, or actions. She just...lets go.
Like water welling up through a spring, ven suddenly floods her body. With nowhere to go...it explodes.
Akin to a cyclone, the energy swirls and whips outward. Snowflakes are batted aside, the winds left to part around the rotating vortex of ven like water past a clogging stone. Slowly, a dome builds around them of still air, a spinning mass of white shielding the pair from the squall.
The temperature stabilizes. Though still cool, it loses its bite. Eyelids twitching, Kakashi feels his energy slowly, sluggishly, return. As mismatched eyes manage to open, he stares dazedly at the strange wall of white. Is that...snow...? Did Kumiko…?
Realizing her hold on him, he stiffly turns his head to look at her. Surely something like this is taxing...how…?
He goes slack.
Posture upright, the glacial mage is unnaturally still. All that moves are the locks of her hair, slowly wafting in the whisper of wind left in her eye of the storm. Her own are wide, staring, unseeing...and glowing with an ice-blue energy that seems to overflow from within.
Kakashi can do little more than ogle. He’s never seen anything like this. Even when pushed to their brinks, he’s never witnessed a mage’s eyes do that. The energy is so palpable, he can feel it tingling along his skin like electricity, making every hair stand on end.
Where is this power coming from…?!
Uncounted minutes pass in the strange, muffled half-silence. Kumiko never moves. Never blinks. Just sits like an idol at the center of the clearing as the winds roar, muted, beyond her sphere of influence.
And then...after what feels like both hours, and yet seconds...something seems to shift. The sounds begin to quiet. The air slows. Like a spinning wind losing its energy, Kumiko’s ring of protection starts to unravel, revealing a spiraled drift meters out from them. The storm, it seems, has passed.
Still exhausted, Kakashi brings his eyes back to Kumiko. Her own lose their glow, and flutter in their sockets before rolling back into her head. Collapsing back against her mount, she loses consciousness.
“Kumiko...Kumiko…!” An arm unbending with both cold and stillness tries to jostle her. “Wake up…!” It’s so hard to keep his eyes open…
Behind him, just as the world goes dark, he hears a rhythmic clatter...and then silence.
Tumblr media
:’D Howdy y’all, long time no see! It’s been...WAY longer than I intended between this update and the last, and the only excuses I have are no time, no muse, and no mojo. My bad...? .w.;      Technically this chapter was SUPPOSED to have a whole other scene, but uh...it’s long enough as it is, so I s’pose I’ll have to save the rest for another one, eh heh. So now we’re up to 14 total outlined chapters from 13. I HAVE the rest...mostly plotted out. Just need to sit and DO IT. And I thought I’d best post as I finish or we’ll be waiting a while, whoops.      But uhhh yeah! Seems our first disagreement has been resolved! I hope I don’t write Kumiko as too...much...? Like her naivety and optimism. But I kinda see her that way: having so much high hope that’s gonna be MAJORLY tested during this whole trek as it hasn’t been able to be tested before. Then we have hardass Kakashi who’s the polar opposite, so...this is basically just them evening each other out xD      And my my, what happened to her there at the end, huh? Who’s that voice? I guess we’ll just have to wait and find ooout :3c With that tho, I’m gonna go sleep actually, haha~ Thanks for reading!
