SOGI 123 was the centre of conflict once again in Kelowna on Saturday as several hundred people on both sides of the debate rallied.

The One Million March 4 Children was one of many across Canada on Saturday with large groups of people protesting Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in schools (SOGI), and in Kelowna, it was interrupted by counter-protestors who support the resource program.

However, those participating in the march believe SOGI does not belong in the classroom.

“That’s not the school’s job to be teaching them, we went to school, you got taught biology and genetics and that’s what they should restrict themselves to, anything else that the duty of the parents,” said David Lindsay, who is against SOGI.

“The government and schools should not have injected themselves into the school system by teaching kids about all the gender identities and other crap that’s out there.” [...]

At an anti-SOGI rally in downtown Kelowna, B.C., protesting against gender and sexual diversity education at schools, some of the words uttered by one of the speakers were shocking and appalling to some.

“It’s alarming and frightening at the same time.” said Wilbur Turner, chair of Advocacy Canada, which supports the LGTBQ2 community.

The speaker in question is David Lindsay, well-known in the city for organizing many anti-vaccine and anti-lockdown protests, which eventually got dubbed as so-called “freedom rallies”.

During his speech at the rally, Lindsay said, “It’s a pretty sad day when you get queers coming out. You know, every society that has let the queers take over has self-destructed from within and if it continues, Canada will self-destruct.”

I've been seeing articles that refer to the fire situations in Yellowknife and Kelowna specifically as 'unprecedented', and when I look over the details under a headline with that word all I can think is

Five years after Slave Lake burned, so did Fort Mac. And just because the fire was bigger, they called it unprecedented. They had five years to learn, and they made all the same mistakes.

'Do you believe Canada is doing enough to support wildfire victims?' a poll in one of the articles asks me, and I vote immediately NO. At this point I don't even know what would be 'enough', but clearly we're not there yet. Half of all people who've voted in this poll agree with me. We are not doing enough.

My heart goes out to all the people who've lost their homes and all the people who are about to. You are not alone in what you're feeling.
