4 months in the making and it’s finally here! huge thank you to everyone that’s been following me through the process. ♡ y’all are so kind and supportive and i really appreciate all the love. this was originally going to be a personal save, it’s inspired by my hometown (portsmouth, virginia) most builds are based off real places around me, and some households are based off my friends and family. this is very much still personal to me!
willow creek, newcrest, and magnolia promenade have been rebuilt, repopulated, and transformed into one large town
i own all packs and kits, if you don't you can still play this save but build and cas objects will be missing
check out the portsim townie index (wip) to read their bios and keep up with their stories. some already have posts but some are empty, i’ll be adding more as i play
21 residential lots / 19 community lots - please read community lot descriptions because most are multi functional! i also left some empty commercial spaces that are “for lease” so i can add things as new packs come out
added new holidays - i changed names to be more realistic and added a few (spring cleaning day, easter, independence day, halloween, christmas eve)
added 5 new clubs (city officials, a gang, a cult, a record label, painting classes by a townie)
notes:
view update log here
i’ve never made a save file before, and this is just the first version. please let me know if you run into any issues. i want to eventually add more households, and i also want to add + rebuild other worlds
i highly suggest turning the eco lifestyle ep’s eco foot print + npc voting off, unless you want the town to look apocalyptic and the trinity church community space to be set to the winter version during summer etc
i turned neighborhood stories off, but sims were still adopting babies and divorcing each other so i kept them all in the my households tab, you don’t have to keep them there!
shoutout to @cowplant-snacks and @nightlioness for letting me use some of their sims as background townies so there's not as many ugly npcs
next world that’s going to be added: oasis springs + del sol valley - idk which one will be out first! but they're coming soon ♡
DOWNLOAD on patreon (always free)
*required mods for the lit version*
please tag me in anything involving the save! id love to see how y’all play in it!

Here’s an interesting thought experiment. I was reading your post about the Commando app Beta 2.1 vs 3.1 debate and whether there was an Alpha app or a Beta 1.1. What if there was an Alpha app and Douglas tried it with Adam, the original bionic but it didn’t work right and caused some brain damage which is why Adam is like that? Douglas then realized that if he was going to put the Commando app in a bionic’s head that he needed to completely rewire their brain to be able to handle actually having information downloaded like a computer. By the time he realized this Bree was too far along so he turned his attention to the next subject. He made Chase more computer like and did a bunch of stuff that would allow Chase to handle actual changes to his brain from outside influences. It’s why Chase has the Commando and override app. The other two can’t have actual apps in their heads like that because they weren’t created to handle things like that.
Yayyy another person to talk about Spike/the Commando App with!!
And this is such an interesting thought that I love!! These are all great connecting ideas too, the idea that Chase has these apps because he has a computer in his mind to process and handle it all unlike his siblings and not just because his main ability is super intelligence. After all, he does have more room for upgrades than his siblings. I love this idea!
I do wonder though if after Douglas were to hypothetically do this he went and gave Adam and Bree some from of compatibility to their chips since Chase can connect to them essentially through bluetooth. But him having the computer not only for his intelligence but also for his apps and to process the use and control of these apps alongside his normal brain is really something to think about. Not only that, but he does have a bunch of wiring inside his head and a bunch of different scanners from his bionic eyes that are also linked to his computer system too (identifying people, fingerprint scanning, etc.)
And with the Commando App, we see that in both versions, especially the first one we see in 1x03, that there is a bunch of coding that appears during the activation and deactivation of the app. This almost seems to imply too that the app truly is still not 100% complete, which matches with the Beta version we see.
Tumblr media
We also see that the Commando App has an entire targeting system connected to Spike's vision. In the first version this comes in the form of Spike scanning the threat's face before completely locking onto the target as an "imminent threat."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the second version, this just comes in the form of a literal target being in Spike's vision. He also has a gauge that measures his aggression level, which obviously varies for him. Not only that, but on the right side of Spike's vision he has gauges to measure speed and visibility presumably of his target, which is kind of scary lol.
A mystery however is why does the chip interrupter not only not work on the Commando App, but instead makes Spike more aggressive? It most likely has something to do with affecting the computer system in Chase. Maybe it doesn't work because Spike is an app and is potentially more linked to the computer in Chase than his chip? Is it just a glitch in general? Is Spike's aggression increase also a glitch or is it a defense mechanism against an outside influence? Who knows!
Tumblr media
One last thing to note is the fact that after Spike takes a hard hit from Perry, it actually causes an error in Chase's computer system and glitches the Commando App out and forces it to disengage. Maybe this is something that would "naturally" happen or this is another example of the incomplete app being unstable (because one would imagine that this caliber of app and its purpose of fighting shouldn't be able to glitch out and shut down after a hard hit)
Tumblr media
Another intriguing thought is that a few of Chase's abilities are apps but are considered "abilities" like the Commado App or his Magnetism App, if that makes sense. Some of his "abilities" are directly related to his computer system as apps compared to his normal "abilities" like his laser bo or forcefield. I just thought that that was interesting to point out because I never really realized that until now!
There's a lot to think about with this, and since we were never meant to dive this deep into because it's a Disney XD show, there's a lot to play around with!

Marriage proponents often contrast the stable relationship patterns of the college-educated with the instability of the less-educated, but a bachelor’s degree is hardly a guarantee of a ring. The Yale anthropologist Marcia Inhorn’s recent book, “Motherhood on Ice: The Mating Gap and Why Women Freeze Their Eggs,” argues that educated women freeze their eggs because they’re unable to find a suitable male partner: Ms. Inhorn points to a large gap in the number of college-educated women versus college-educated men during their reproductive years — on the order of several million. But Ms. Inhorn’s book goes beyond these quantitative mismatches to document the qualitative experience of women who are actively searching for partners — the frustration, hurt, and disappointment. “Almost without exception,” she writes, “women in this study were ‘trying hard’ to find a loving partner,” mostly through dating sites and apps. Women in their late 30s reported “online ageism,” others described removing their Ph.D from their profiles so as not to intimidate potential dates; still others found that men were often commitment-averse. The behaviors were ubiquitous enough that Ms. Inhorn compiled a sort of taxonomy of cads, such as the “Alpha males” who “want to be challenged by work, not by their partners” or the “Polyamorous men” who claim “that their multiple attachments to women are all ‘committed.’” Her breakdown — table 1.1 in the book — reads like a rigorous academic version of all the complaints you’ve ever heard from your single female friends. One of these friends, with whom I went to college, would like nothing more than to be married. She’s beautiful and successful, and not, as far as I can tell, overly “picky.” She has had long-term relationships in the past, and cherishes the intimacy and stability they provide. To that end, she keeps a post-it note on a bulletin board. On it, she has drawn out 10 lines of 10 circles each. Every time she goes on a date with someone new, she fills in a circle. She’s committed to going on at least a hundred dates as she searches for a male partner with whom she can have a family. In two years, she’s filled in nearly half of the circles, and she’s still single. It’s like an SAT test form where every answer is incorrect. When she asks her male friends to set her up with their friends, they consistently tell her that no one they know would be good enough for her. “It’s like, how bad are you guys?” she marvels.

Elec Man Unhearted on openCanvas 1.1
Tumblr media
Finished on: April 26, 2024
Happy (super early) 10th Anniversary, Elec Man Unhearted His original story was created on October 12, 2014 While the current version of the story was created and posted in 2016 (Technically this year is its 8th Anniversary)
I started this drawing on October 2023, while during his 9th Anniversary, using openCanvas 1.1. Yes, seriously. I tried the program as a test. It is SUPER limited, compared to other and more updated programs. But it is fun to try it with those limitations.
The drawing ended up becoming a remake of the first drawing I did for him in 2015, which was also the first digital drawing I made. (I made that drawing on Paint .net while using the mouse, i think)
Creating a drawing with a old software with my tablet, and a remake. Feels really good to show my evolution as an artist.
October will be Unhearted's 10th Anniversary. So... Happy belated 9th Anniversary, Unhearted!

Hope you like it! _Elec

ASPEN'S WORLDBUILDING GUIDE (Pt 1/?)
1. Creating fantasy languages (Part 1)
[DISCLAIMER: I am NOT an expert! This are just advices for anyone who needs em. This post specifically will be based on what I've learnt with Latin!]
---
Hello, everyone! To start with this writing blog (ig), I would like to begin with worldbuilding tips! Today, I'll start with the basic of creating a language for your world.
When we watch a fantasy film, we can see that a race or species speaks a language that is not real. Sometimes this process may look quite complex, but I'll try to make it as easy as I can ^^.
1.1. Alphabet.
This is the first thing you have to think of when creating a language. You can always look for references in foreign languages, or even old ones. Some examples are:
Symbols (E.g. Hieroglyphs)
Tumblr media
Letters (E.g. Latin)
Tumblr media
Signs (E.g. Chinese)
Tumblr media
Now we decided that, we have to think of the complexity of the alphabet:
Direct translation: All the letters in your new language are equivalent to letters in, for example, English ("Letter1" is "A", "Letter2" is "B", and so on). I recommend this when you're just beginning or you don't want to make your language too hard to work on.
Symbols are words: The letters are more complex, meaning that a "letter" can be a word (Such as "Letter1" means "Water", Letter2 means "Wind" and "Letter1" + "Letter2" = "Storm"). This may take longer to develop, but it can make your language more rich.
There may be more ways to create the alphabet, but those are basic ones!
Now that is time to actually create the alphabet, keep in mind this things:
Make it conscious!: If you take a look at any language (E.g. Arabic or Hebrew), you'll notice how they match. If you're looking to create a language, try to make the letters similar to eachother, but not too much.
Begin with the basic: Most relevant things are, basically, letters used to form words (A, B, C...). Then you can focus on other punctuation symbols like "!" or "?".
Consider if there will be upper case and lower case: This may look obvious, but you can make your alphabet more rich by adding this simple variations. For example, is not the same "a" than "A", even if they're the same letter.
1.2. History.
Languages aren't the same 10,000 years ago than now. For example, Latin spoken in the Roman Empire evolved to the Spanish spoken (mainly) in America and Spain.
Now, when we create a new language, we must focus on the following points:
When was it spoken for the first time?: Languages can appear in any moment. You can use as a reference your world's history for it.
Where was it born?: The regions where a language is spoken are very relevant, specially since the current situation will affect it. For example, during Al-Andalus in Spain (711 - 1496), arabic was the brought language, but because of the contact with endemic languages, the mozarab was born as a mix of arabic, berber and romance (like latin) words.
Why was it born?: Keep in mind that, as I said before, languages exist for a reason. In those cases, they can be created because of two (2) languages got in contact. Although keep in mind the evolution will probably take thousands of years :>
With this keypoints in mind, you can begin creating the story of your new language :D
1.3. Regions.
As I said before, Spanish is now spoken in most american contries and also Spain. However, Mexicans won't speak the same way Argentinians do. This normally happens because of the evolution in the specific zone (E.g. Mexican Spanish has aztec words).
Now, we can apply this to a fantasy language by thinking this:
Why people speak this language here? (E.g. A language being brought after an invation)
Are there any variations? (Sometimes because of languages spoken before)
What's the difference between the cultured version (written) and the popular version (spoken)?
Although this last point is probably not that necessary when we want to do a simple language, it can be very helpful to develop it better, specially when different characters speak the same language.
---
That's all for today! Hope this post was helpful, and if anyone wants to correct, add or ask anything, you can comment it or send it to my Ask me anything! <3

In OneShortEye's latest video about Conquests of the Longbow, there's a section about how Robin can apparently speak to animals.
One example goes like this:
Robin: Horse, do you speak? Horse: Nay. Robin: I thought not.
I've looked at the relevant code as I figured there'd be a post in it. I'll probably mirror this on my personal webbed site later, maybe. So here it is:
Tumblr media
Though using a Script like this is pretty normal, Converse is not exactly a standard function in SCI. It's pretty opaque as to what the parameters mean and my cowboy hat's off to Sluicebox for figuring it out so far that his custom decompiler can add those comments. What's important is that the localN variable pointers refer to further instructions:
Tumblr media
Comments added by me.
Since this is itself screen (or script, or module) #1010 we can confirm this easily:
Tumblr media
So what this and some other lines tells me is that Converse is an early and very odd take on SCI 1.1's Messenger system.
Local9 incidentally defines what would conceptually be a Talker:
Tumblr media
I can at the very least tell from this that local0 is the False Knight, whose portrait is view #60, and whose text is untitled, whereas his horse has no portrait but instead a title. Just passing 1 (which being <1000 can be determined to not be a pointer) just means to use the generic Robin talker. And from some of the other second parameters in the area full of text references, we can see that these setups can be quite intricate.
But using a Messager would be much cleaner. Of course, none of us might ever know how readable this code originally was. So let's pretend this was instead a late SCI 1.1 game.
How many lines would it take to implement this joke in SCI 1.1?
That depends on how you want to implement the horse's neighing. In SCI 1.0, it takes an entire Script to take away control, show three messages in a row, play a sound during the second one, give back control, and clean up afterward. If this were not just an SCI 1.1 game, but also voiced, the entire Script could be removed and reduced to a single call to messager::say. The neigh could just be how the second line is read, and the system would take care of there being three lines split along two speakers.
If however it were not voiced but you still want that neigh in, much like the SCI 1.0 version that does exist, you'd still need a Script. It's that simple. You just replace the Converse calls with messager::say.
Such is life.

Hamlet Reading Thoughts
I'm currently rereading Hamlet for my Shakespeare class, and I though I'd keep track of some of my thoughts here since there's a LOT I want to talk about. (Just for reference, the version I'm reading for class is the New Oxford edition, edited by John Jowett)
These are just some things I've noticed in Acts 1 & 2 and might make longer posts for later:
Horatio as a storyteller. I've posted about this before and it's one of my favorite things to talk about. But one thing I noticed during this re-read is that Horatio is constantly telling stories from the very beginning! He's the one who recounts all the exposition about the conflict with Fortinbras in 1.1 (and he notably ends the play speaking to Fortinbras and saying he'll recount the story of what happened to Denmark. And then, in 1.2, Horatio goes and tells Hamlet the story of meeting the ghost. He's just. A storyteller right from the get-go. I'm planning to keep track of every Horatio moment that catches my eye during this reading so that I can compile it into one post about this argument.
Polonius my favorite silly old man. <3 I have a soft spot for the guy because I once played him in a high school production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, so I just love seeing him spout his nonsense. But like all other characters in this play he is, of course, a tragic figure. He has such a high opinion of his own intelligence, but his elaborate schemes and love of his own voice prevent him from seeing the answers that are directly in front of him. Like the fact that he completely misses the significance of the Player's speech and the additional meaning Hamlet is reading into it? He's just so confident in his own intelligence that he refuses to listen to anyone else.
And the Players!!! The first time I read the play I missed this, because I hadn't yet read the Aeneid. But Holy Fucking Hell the significance that this allusion has here. Hamlet asks the players to perform a speech he heard from them once, and it's Aeneas' speech to Dido about the slaughter of Priam. Just as a recap, Aeneas is the hero of the Aeneid, and he is a survivor of the fall of Troy. Priam is the former king of Troy, whom Aeneas saw murdered by Pyrrhus. Also notable: Dido, the audience of the speech, is a woman manipulated by the gods into loving Aeneas, who falls into despair and madness and kills herself when he leaves her behind. Starting to sound familiar? Aeneas is guided by the spirit of his father, Anchises, just as Hamlet sees the spirit of his own father as a guide. At this point in the play, Hamlet wants to see himself as Aeneas, a hero guided by his father to fulfill his destiny as a leader and seek vengeance for a wrongful death (as Aeneas kills Turnus as revenge for Pallas in the final moments of the Aeneid). I would need to find my copy of the Aeneid in order to do a deeper reading and compare the two, but goddamn is this speech an important moment.
And to return to point #2, what does Polonius do in the middle of this incredibly symbolic speech?
Tumblr media
He notices NOTHING. The man loves to hear himself speak, but cannot stand to listen for more than five fucking seconds dear god.

This is the first full weekend after the clocks were changed to standard time in most of North America. Please note that the WINB program schedule on 9265 kHz stays with Eastern Time year-round. Shortwave Radiogram on 9265 is therefore an hour later by UTC, but probably the same by your local time. The situation in the paragraph above also applies to Shortwave Radiogram  from WRMI, 9955 kHz, now Sunday 1530-1600 UTC. Shortwave Radiogram on all other WRMI frequencies stays with its UTC times, so they are an hour earlier by local time in most of North America. Yes, I know, these time changes are never easy. See the updated schedule below. Looking ahead to next weekend, Shortwave Radiogram will be transmitted in EasyDRF, a form of DRM that can  be received on conventional radios. I will send details over the weekend or early next week. A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 328) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is provided by Roger in Germany. Beginning with a boom: The Irish origin of the Mills and Bibby families
This was originally the first chapter in my family history on the Mills family, but has been adapted and changed for this blog. All the sources are noted in a bibliographic essay at the end of this post, with maps and other photos throughout. Enjoy! I excerpted this from the original post on the WordPress version of this blog, and broke it up into smaller chunks to put on here, to make it more readable.
The year was 1796. Invasion rocked the isle of Ireland, or as the Irish call it, Éire. In the Expedition to Ireland, or Expédition d'Irlande, Napoleon’s imperial French army had tried to assist the Irish who were revolting because of taxation and religious laws, in hopes of creating a sister republic friendly to the British, but had failed. Again, in 1798, the French, one year after the Dutch had unsuccessfully invaded, were at it again (Figure 1.1). The imperial French army had come to the island for the last time in hopes of weakening the British empire and support the Irish revolt against the rule of the British which flared up again in May of that year. Again, they were unsuccessful as 150,000 British troops across all of Ireland, commanded by Lord Cornwallis, the same who had fought the Americans during the Revolutionary War and surrendered at Yorktown, was ultimately victorious with the Irish rebels on the run while the invading French were made prisoners.
Tumblr media
Figure 1.1: Maps of the French invasion(s) of Ireland 1796-1798 courtesy of DK’s World History Atlas (left) & the Times Concise Atlas of World History (right).
The Mills family was about to begin anew. Seven years after the failed invasion by the French, in 1805, John Mills was born in Ballysheehan, County Tipperary, Ireland (as they call counties in Ireland), with his middle name was Rand as family stories say. While some sources say he was born in 1804 or even 1806, he attested, by his own recollection, that he was born that year. Three years later, in 1807, Thomas Mills was born in the same location as John. Neither Thomas nor John’s parents are currently known. However, it is likely that both Thomas and John were brothers. A Margaret or Jonathan Mills are listed in the 1766 religious census for Ireland, living in Mealiffe and Cashel, indicating deeper roots of the Mills family on the island. As for the surname of Mills, it also has a strong basis in England from a “John Mills” in 1541 to a “William Mills” in 1608. Furthermore, the surname of Bibby was derived from Norse movement and originates from Christian believers as well. As for the surname of Mills, it means either “living near a mill” and/or was a “genitive of an abbreviated form of Michael.”
As for County Tipperary, where the Mills family was living, it was a relatively well-populated area which was undoubtedly agricultural (it still is) as it was not near the textile industries clustered around Dublin or in the northern part of the island. Ballysheehan itself, called Baile Uí Shíocháin in Irish, is a town and civil parish in Middle Third barony, within Munster Province and the southern part of County Tipperary. This small area, which is a little more than 400 acres, has been historically Protestant, is only 3 miles north of Cashel (Figure 1.2), and had only, as Samuel Lewis wrote in his Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, about three thousand inhabitants by 1838.

The Bibbys, which later marry into the Mills family, had long roots in County Tipperary. First of all, the surname of Bibby, which is more common in Great Britain than Ireland, is also spelled Bibbey, Bibey, Bybee, Biby, Bebby, and Beeby, was located in Ireland mainly from 1847 to 1864. Reportedly it is a relationship name “from the Middle English personal name Bibby” and occurs in places such as Manchester, England. Other connections to Ireland are not known.
In 1813, a man named Robert Bibby was born in Ireland. While his exact birth place is not known, it is likely that he was born in County Tipperary. Like Thomas and John, his parents are not known. In later years, Thomas Lyndop Bibby was born (in 1822) in Cashel, Ireland, County Tipperary. His parents were reportedly John Bibby and Mehitable Lyndop, who died in 1840. These could have been the same parents of Margaret Ann Bibby, born two years after Thomas, also in Cashel. It is possible that the Bibby family was large, as could have been the Mills family, and they may have crossed paths. After all, Bibbys were born as far back as 1765 (Thomas Bibby) in Ireland.

The Grand Canyon--Emergence of The People has been published on Elaine Webster - http://elainewebster.com/the-grand-canyon-emergence-of-the-people/
New Post has been published on http://elainewebster.com/the-grand-canyon-emergence-of-the-people/
The Grand Canyon--Emergence of The People
Eleven tribes call the Grand Canyon home: Havasupai Tribe, Hopi Tribe, Hualapai Tribe, Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians, Las Vegas Band of Paiute Indians, Moapa Band of Paiute Indians, Navajo Nation, Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe, Pueblo of Zuni, and the Yavapai Apache Nation.  Each tribe has their own version of the emergence of their people from the point where the Little Colorado and the Colorado rivers meet at what is known as the Confluence.
Recently, the Grand Canyon Tribal Coalition, called upon Washington to create a 1.1-million-acre National Monument to protect this sacred area from threats like uranium mining and over-development. (This proposal remains under consideration by the U.S. government.) The Havasupai Tribe, in particular, who have lived in and around the Grand Canyon since time immemorial, were last evicted from the area in 1928. Finally, the name of the campground and rest area along the Bright Angel Trail has been renamed to be Havasupai Gardens.
So, why do we care? Well, history repeats and we are now faced with many of the same challenges that drove ancient civilizations below ground, only to emerge in stages after the great floods receded. There is much speculation about pre-historical circumstances, but there is no denying the legendary similarities existing in most indigenous cultures—cultures which would not have had contact at the time of the catastrophic earth changes. It is not important for us to believe the mythology—it is important to study how people faced with insurmountable obstacles can begin again and do it peacefully. The Hopi emergence story describes how the Hopi people lived in the underworld for many years, where they were taught by the Kachinas about the ways of the world and the importance of living in harmony with nature. However, the time came when the Kachinas instructed the Hopi people to leave the underworld and emerge into the physical world.
The Hopi people followed the Kachinas’ guidance, and after a long and treacherous journey, they emerged from the depths of the Grand Canyon. After the emergence, the Hopi people continued to be guided by the Kachinas, who taught them how to survive in their new environment. The Kachinas instructed the Hopi people in agriculture, hunting, and spiritual practices, which helped them to establish a thriving community in the mesas and valleys of northeastern Arizona.
One of the most important crops grown by the Hopi is corn, which is considered a sacred food. The Hopi have developed over 24 different varieties of corn, each with unique properties and flavors. The Hopi use corn in a variety of ways, including for food, medicine, and as a part of their spiritual practices. In addition, these unique strains of corn can withstand the harshest of conditions on a planet that is becoming hotter and drier. This certainly is useful today.
Migration and societal connections are once again paramount. DNA samples from several tribes show striking similarities with Eastern Asian populations suggesting that migratory routes included crossing land and/or sea from Asia. The Zuni language, for instance, is considered by linguists as having no established relationship with other languages. However, one anthropologist has linked the language to a Japanese archipelago. This could be a result of Japanese Buddhist missionaries traveling to Mexico, then north during the 12th century CE. Regardless, human migratory patterns are more extensive than originally thought—we are all inter-related at some point. So, when we turn our backs on other cultures; we are turning our backs on ourselves—we are all in this together.
Next, bring on G.E. Kincaid, an American adventurer and explorer who, in the early 20th century, claimed to have made an incredible discovery within the depths of the Grand Canyon. His account of this remarkable find has since been the subject of intense debate and speculation, with many questions remaining unanswered to this day.
Kincaid was born in 1868 in Washington, D.C., and spent much of his youth exploring the wilderness around his home. He developed a deep fascination with ancient civilizations and lost cities, and this passion led him on numerous expeditions to remote regions across the globe. However, it was his journey to the Grand Canyon in 1909 that would prove to be his most controversial.
According to Kincaid, he was traveling down the Colorado River on a wooden raft when he noticed an unusual cave entrance on the canyon wall. Intrigued, he decided to investigate and found himself inside a vast underground chamber. As he explored the cavern, he was amazed to discover a series of intricate tunnels and passageways leading deep into the earth.
Further exploration revealed that the tunnels were home to a thriving civilization, complete with temples, homes, and even an enormous amphitheater. The walls of the chambers were adorned with intricate carvings and murals, depicting scenes of daily life and religious rituals. Kincaid also claimed to have found artifacts and relics that suggested the inhabitants of the underground city were a highly advanced and sophisticated culture.
Kincaid returned to the surface with a trove of photographs and sketches, as well as a detailed journal documenting his discovery. However, his account was met with skepticism and disbelief from many quarters. Some argued that the photographs were doctored or taken from other sources, while others suggested that Kincaid had simply fabricated the entire story as a publicity stunt.
Despite the controversy, Kincaid continued to promote his story and even offered to lead expeditions back to the underground city. However, he was never able to provide concrete evidence to support his claims, and the mystery of the Grand Canyon cave remains unsolved to this day.
So, as we look to our future, the question is: Will we fall victim once again, to a planetary collapse from war, famine, economic decline, political upheaval, and environmental changes, only to scramble underground to wait until we can re-emerge? Or have we learned enough to circumvent most catastrophes, band together, support each other and thrive? Let’s hope this is so.

This Y2K pastime is becoming a big hit among South Korean youth
Tumblr media
Written by Jake Kwon, CNNSeoul, South Korea Contributors Jeong Jiwon, CNN
Agroup of girls giggle as they try on a pair of pink glasses, plush pig hats and bunny ears. At another counter of the studio, one carefully straightens her hair. Together, they cram into a photo booth, pose, and then marvel at the photo strips the machine drops below. They tape one onto a wall filled with images of other young patrons.
It's a familiar scene playing out at several hundred small photo studios that have recently opened in Seoul. The spaces — with no staff visibly present — typically house three to six booths and are open 24 hours a day.
Since the pandemic, the studios have become one of the trendiest destinations among South Korean Gen Z. On the main thoroughfare of Hongdae, the city's busiest district, they're found on every block — sometimes, only a few feet apart.
Tumblr media
20-year-old university student Choi Hui-je told CNN he visits a studio every time he goes out with friends, which is around five to seven times a month. Once, he recalled in a phone interview, he went five times in one week.
"It's a necessary stop. We go for food, karaoke, café, and then the photo studio," Choi said.
19-year-old Jenny Dall'alba, a student in the southern city of Busan, estimates she's gone more than 70 times over the past few years.
"This is not a fad but a must-go-to every time," she said.
Many around the world may have their own memories of hopping into similar booths. In the early 2000s, they surged in popularity thanks to the development of digital technology and coveted sticker versions.
But two decades later, in the age of social media and post-pandemic, they've taken on a whole new life in South Korea.
With over 245 locations in the Seoul Metropolitan area and 200 more around the country, Life4Cuts has a major share of the market: the brand estimates 2 million people visit their studios every month.
On Instagram there are more than 1.1 million posts with the hashtag Life4Cuts (in Korean) — with everyone from K-pop stars to influencers posting the outcome of their shoots.
Some are seen copying poses from viral TikTok videos or mimicking anime characters' famous moves. Choi himself likes to channel the expressive memes of pink beaver character Zanmang Loopy from the 2003 South Korean animation Pororo the Little Penguin.
Dall'alba, who keeps all her photos together in a pouch, says she enjoys getting creative by choosing different props and frames. She adds that her friends like to pose with K-pop group members that are baked into each frame and go multiple times to make sure to get a photo with every star.
There are also Instagram accounts dedicated to teaching visitors poses to try the next time in a studio.
Booths nowadays have better lighting and features like timelapses which have contributed to their popularity.
Tumblr media
Business owners see the studios as a safe investment opportunity.
Kim Joo-hyun opened his Busan-based Life4Cuts studio in 2020, when his restaurant began struggling during the pandemic. With no government permit required to operate, he was able to set up a shop in less than a month, with a relatively moderate investment of 180 million won ($134,000).
"There is a widespread notion that you won't lose money opening them," Kim said over the phone, adding that it doesn't take much physical work and he's seen a profit margin of 50%. And while Kim is concerned with growing competition, he is also actively searching for another location to open a studio.
Tumblr media
Kim was initially skeptical of whether the studios would be a passing fad, but as people started bringing their family, older relatives, and even dogs into the booth he's since changed his mind.
"(Customers) can buy small but guaranteed happiness," he said, for little money at about 4,000 won or $3 a pop. "The day-to-day life may be difficult but they can enter and exit with a smile on their face."
The tangible aspect of the photos may be what's particularly appealing to Gen Z. But Choi says there's something deeper — the pandemic reminded him and others of how precious life is.
"We know well our youth will not last. It's to remember the precious moments."
