New year, new @podcastbigbang ! This year I had the HONOR, the PLEASURE of drawing for @pro-daydreamer ‘s Oliver/Mark fake dating fic “gonna do my very best and it aint no lie”. Guys, for real, I forgot this wasn’t the canon new season while I read it, it’s that well written, in character and engaging. I caught myself wondering when the next episode would be out.... unfortunately its not canon but I cant wait for the coming chapters!! It’s gonna be good!

Once upon a time, high atop a lonely, misty cliffside beside the sea, sat a haunted house… The year is 1863 and ghosts are all the rage, but Head Butler Jonathan Sims of Magnus Manor does not believe in spiritualism, or ghost stories, or any of that trite hocus pocus. In short order, Zolf Smith lost his career, his religion, his magic, and his other leg. Luckily, at least one of those things is salvageable at Heart Fitness, the gym Azu took over from him which focuses on injury recovery, disability, and catering to non-normative bodies - though the place is in dire need of more funding. When Hamid invites his tailoring client Oscar Wilde to the pub, his first meeting with Zolf is an unmitigated disaster, but he could also have just the right contacts to help the gym. As Wilde’s secrets threaten to plunge them all back into a dangerous life, they might also help Zolf find the strength he doesn’t think he’s lost.

Three years after the Hephaestus, Douglas Eiffel has finally convinced Daniel Jacobi to marry him. When Doug wakes to an empty bed the next morning, he doesn’t think much of it. Daniel is known for fleeing rather than dealing with his feelings, but he’s never gone long.

That is, until Doug finds the door of their beach rental open and blood on the floor. Now, Doug has to find his husband with few clues and little idea of Daniel’s past, all while dealing with the slow return of his memories.

and, we're live!

Time for my 2023 stats round up.

First, let's look at the number of hours/minutes per month, shall we?

All of that account for 59 hours & 11 minutes of podfic. Now, comparing to last year, when I had just shy of 31 hours, that looks pretty good. Remember, last year I started in August so I almost doubled it.

We do notice a dip in March & April, which tend to be busy months in the education world. The spike in May is due to Voiceteam. June-August are a bit odd - you'd think a teacher on break would have more time to create. But I had some life stuff hit and it really destroyed my brain.

So, here's my first 2024 Resolution:

Now, moving on to the breakdowns and fun stuff, shall we?

Here are my top 5 fandoms, authors, ratings, and genres! I also have them in bar chart form and pie chart form, which I'll put below the cut. You'll see a slight difference in the author category -- I didn't include myself or Flowerparrish and my podcast in that as those weren't authors.

Of course, what is podficcing without making covers you love? Here are my favorite covers I made for my own podfics! I have a migraine so please excuse the fact that the images don't line up, vision is blurry:

Now, let's move on to my stats image from above. I used the same format as last year but since I made over 100 more podfic than last year, each microphone now equals five podfics.

As you can see, I participated in a lot of events! I believe I made the most audio for Voiceteam 2022 (as evidenced by my hours/month graph). This was my first year doing Voiceteam and I had a blast. I also got to do Podtogether & Summer Swap for the first time. It was my 2nd year doing ITPE. And then so much more.

My top kudosed collaborative project was "A Fair Compromise" with @wanderingjedihistorian for 212th Appreciation week. My top kudosed solo project was "A Game of Guess Who With Big Blue" by TheWitchBoy. The longest podfic I made was also with @wanderingjedihistorian and was my podfic of our Codywan Big Bang project! My shortest was a Locked Tomb podfic at 57 seconds called Realization.

My first podfic of 2023 was Hot Cocoa by Melime, a "The Batman" podfic. In the middle was Dissipate by SunsetsOverLA for Waxer*Boil month. And the last posted thing was for @fandomtrumpshate, for my top bidder - an Obi-Wan/Jango soulmates AU.

Now, on to 2024! My resolutions are:

To continue working on current WIPs I'm bringing into 2024 - some of which I've already tied up only 5 days into the year

To podfic even when my brain is being a gremlin, because podfic makes me happy and I should be able to focus on that!

To be brave enough to post the first "Soft Wars" podfic and finally tackle the series (kind of the same as resolution #1)

Not to sign up for Big Bangs -- I love them dearly but they actually caused a lot of my burnout this year and I didn't love that. As much as I love collabs, I think I'll stick to Podtogether, multivoices with friends, and gift exchanges this year!

Close the gaps -- aka, as much as I love Clone Wars, I want to focus on all things I love, instead of overbearingly focusing in on one.

Going into 2024, I am going to start tracking what music I use in my podfics, because I was curious about it / @flowerparrish inspired me. I also found a way to track overall Star Wars and then Star Wars broken down into sub fandoms - that should neaten up my "top 5" category a bit.

RotE Ladies Big Bang 2023

Hello everyone!

It’s almost time for round three of RotE Ladies Big Bang, the Realm of the Elderlings fanworks event celebrating the various and glorious ladies in this series!

In May 2020, my friends and I talked about how much hate Molly and the other ladies in The Realm of the Elderlins get in some parts of the fandom, and how we found that incomprehensible because this series is just wall to wall full of gorgeous, multi-faceted and well-written female characters. As a result, RotE Ladies Big Bang 2020 was born, and we encourage everyone to take a look at the tag #rote ladies big bang 2020 or #rlbb2020 as well as #rote ladies big bang 2022 and #rlbb2022 because we have been blessed with lots of truly fantastic fanworks.

So once again, we’re proposing a Rote ladies appreciation month: 30 days of fanworks and meta starring the lovely female and female-presenting characters of the Realm of the Elderlings! The event is super casual: there’s no need to sign up, and you can contribute as much or as little as your time and energy levels allow - even if it’s just a sketch, we’d love to see it. 💜

WHAT: RotE Ladies Big Bang 2023, 30 days of celebrating these amazing characters being badass and sweet and strong and vulnerable and everything inbetween

WHEN: You can start creating immediately or and keep going all through April, but posting for the event happens April 1st to April 30th 2023! This is a kick-off post; we will make another post with prompts shortly

WHY: Because complex and interesting female and female-presenting characters in fantasy literature deserve more love!

WHO: Anyone, everyone! Especially you!

HOW: Any way you wish. Fanart, fanfic, podcasts, podfics, meta, crafts, moodboards, scrapbooks, photo edits, gardening done like Patience would do it... Anything goes! Giving everyone else’s works some love is also a valid and extremely welcome way to participate. 💜 We’ll offer a set of prompts for those who want them, but there’s no need to use them!

There’s only two rules:

1. No character hate! Not everyone likes every character and that is perfectly ok, but we ask you to keep any hate out of the tags. Instead we encourage you to redirect that energy into creating something for a character you do love!

SpaceTime -- A brief history

SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. Later, Gary became part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and was one of its first presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

End of the Year 2022 AO3

A few people tagged me in various fic things (thank you loves!! ( @allwaswell16 @chai-hat-tea @phoebe-delia and maybe others??) so I’m just going to combine a few things and reflect on my writing/AO3 here!

Overall, writing was a bit of a mixed thing for me this year.  I wrote more than I did last year, and I wrote a lot of variety this year! I feel like I sort of fell in love with writing again in 2021 and that love affair continued, though there were some growing pains haha. I spent a lot of time with my @drarrymicrofic crowd (HI GUYS LOVE YOUUUUU) and that was an incredible community. I met fandom friends in person. I got some wonderful feedback and even though I’m not a big name or super popular writer, I feel so so grateful for the folks I have that seem to enjoy what I do!!

Overall stats:

Total:  50 fics for a total of 202,812 words                       2 podcasts

Drarry: 42 fics published (120,781 words)             1 podfic (that was really scary and we’ll see if I do more haha)

I really loved the Drarry I did this year. A lot of them were drabbles or vignettes. 36 were under 5K words, while 2 were over 20K. You Make Me Melt (for my wonder pals @julcheninred & @fraddit ) was my most popular Drarry this year. I am also really really proud of Maybe You’re the Difference (originally for wireless but DQ’d due to my own idiocy) and The Privilege of Being Yours (aka, what if Harry Potter had to have Ritual Sex with Draco Malfoy for Magical Reasons™ fic).

Larry: 8 fics published (80,960 words)

I wrote a lot less Larry this year, which is funny, because I have a Larry fic that’s been literally eating my brain for SO LONG. 2023 baby! It’s gonna happen! I wrote 4 pieces for Wordplay, which was a lot of fun. My Reverse Bang, Unveiled, from the beginning of the year was far and away my most popular Larry fic this year (actually the most popular thing I wrote at all), and was also the longest thing I published this year, at 65,403 words. 

I wrote a lot of smut this year, but not all of it was! I wrote a bunch of fics simply because I had an idea that made me laugh A LOT and had to write it. I wrote a lot of shorter things, and I’m sort of thinking of focusing more on longer pieces next year, but that’s going to depend a LOT on my life circumstances.

I’ll muse more about that in a different post

Life in Technicolor

Jon is watching him, and Martin feels just a bit too perceived when he looks at the cup in Jon’s hand, which is the same two-toned grey as Martin’s own.

“Um,” Martin starts eloquently.

“Can you see any?” Jon asks, painfully soft. “Colors, I mean.”

Martin scans the street across from the station. Grey buildings against a grey sky, jutting up from grey concrete, framing groups of people in all shapes and sizes but only one variation of the same color in different shades of light and dark.

“No.” Martin answers. “It’s all just…”

His breath fogs in the air with his words. It feels like he just missed a step going down the stairs, or like all of his organs made a unanimous decision to shift a millimeter to the left. His tongue is sandpaper in his mouth. But he laughs, only in name.

“This is not what I had in mind when I said I liked retro aesthetics.”

Jon doesn’t laugh. Martin kind of hoped he would, because it was an objectively funny thing to say. And because laughing is easier than thinking about what it really means.

“Martin – when did…?”

“I don’t know.” Martin looks down at his tea, staring, willing it to bleed into color in front of his eyes. “I don’t know.”

Or: the Lonely leaves Martin temporarily colorblind. He might feel more like himself as he gets his colors back, but what about the parts of him that aren't so easily changed? A Safehouse-era, Lonely recovery fic with color as a central motif.
