Strep pneumo, Haemophilus influenzae, and moraxella catarrhalis are commone causes of pneumonia. They're common upper respiratory bugs.

Streptococcus pneumoniae, or pneumococcus, is a Gram-positive, spherical bacteria, alpha-hemolytic or beta-hemolytic, aerotolerant anaerobic member of the genus Streptococcus. They are usually found in pairs and do not form spores and are non motile.

Haemophilus influenzae is a Gram-negative, coccobacillary, facultatively anaerobic capnophilic pathogenic bacterium of the family Pasteurellaceae. H. influenzae was first described in 1892 by Richard Pfeiffer during an influenza pandemic.

Moraxella catarrhalis is a fastidious, nonmotile, Gram-negative, aerobic, oxidase-positive diplococcus that can cause infections of the respiratory system, middle ear, eye, central nervous system, and joints.

I have a pt with pleural effusion. CT surgery was consulted and ordered a thoracentesis with fluid studies (pleural fluid cell count with differential; glucose, LDH, and total protein of the pleural fluid).

Will later use Light's Criteria to determine whether it's a transudative or exudative pleff.
