Yet Another Winter Project

This winter and with help from Santa Claus bringing an ICOM IC-705 I have completed my third go-box build. Unlike my earlier go-box builds, this one is oriented for POTA activations and a more compact travel solution. (ARES deployment is a secondary consideration, recognizing the power out limitations of the IC-705.)

The first go-box build was based on an ICOM ID-5100 contained within a RIDGID brand Pro Organizer with the RIDGID Tool Cart holding a 30 ah LiFePO4, coax, tools, etc. The second go-box held in a 4U server case an ICOM ID-7100, Yaesu FT-400XDR, PSU and Kantronics KPC3+. The third go-box build is a mission change with it focusing on POTA wrapped around the ICOM IC-705 radio.

For the rest of discussion, we’ll focus on the power source change for this new build, moving away from the power/tool cart to a smaller, substantially lighter hand-carry box. As before weather resistant.

The DIY power box service requirements include powering the IC-705, its AT-705 tuner, a laptop and charge ports for USB A and C devices. Operating time should allow for half-day POTA operation in both digital and voice modes.

I must say that there was feature creep in the power source solution. With what originally started out as only a LiFePO4 battery with an external battery charge wart saw the inclusion of a West Mountain brand Epic PwrGate. The PwrGate has nice features to include auto switching between battery and external power, battery charging and direct solar panel input.

The Harbor Freight Tactical Ammo/Utility Box used in the construction provides sufficient space for a low profile ECO-Worthy brand 20 ah LiFePO4 battery. It is low enough that it allows me to retain use of the internal, removable tray. One side of the tray is reserved space for the power outlets on the lid. The opposite side is where I store the battery charger. So, if I have external 13.8 VDC for primary power it will use the Epic PwrGate to charge the battery. If I have 120 VAC but not a PSU, I’ll plug in the power wart LiFePO4 charger. Down the road I may add a solar panel!

The top of the box has a quick access compartment that is used for power out connections. There are two sets of Anderson PowerPoles that are for radio and tuner usage. A car 12 VDC receptacle. a combination USB A and C charge port adapter, voltage monitor and a power switch controlling these three items. There is enough room in the tray for the wall wart battery charger (a portion of the tray space is taken up by the lid mounted interior side of the power out devices).

I did not realize when I first added the Epic PwrGate into the box configuration that the PwrGate draws residual (parasitic) power, a small amount but nonetheless a drain source. I could just unplug the battery from the PwrGate when it is not in use putting a little wear and tear on the associated Anderson PowerPoles. Adding the master battery switch between the battery and the PwrGate makes it more user friendly.

All wiring is done with scrap pieces of 12 awg strand wire. Power out from the Epic PwrGate runs thru an opening in the interior tray to a marine grade 6-port (only using three ports) fuse block I had lying around. There’s a master 30-amp auto style fuse between the battery and the PwrGate. If I need to remove the tray to access this fuse, the battery or PwrGate its one pair of PowerPoles to disconnect next to the fuse block.

Not only is the menu structure confusing, the track pad you use to navigate through it is kludgy, making even simple tasks a distracting chore. All configuration is done using a tiny dial on the back of the device and the recessed reset switch. You can choose between RAID0, RAID1, JBOD, or single volume. It supports drives up to 16TB, for a total maximum of 32TB.

Just screw in the drives (screws and a screwdriver are supplied for both HDDs or SSDs), then power on and hold down the reset switch. The drive LED will be orange while it reformats. In case you forget, TerraMaster has affixed an instruction sticker on the side.

RAID0 "Striped": Data is split up and written simultaneously across both disks. This provides close to double the performance of a single drive for HDDs, less so with SSDs. Useful for applications where speed is a priority, like video editing. The total capacity is the combination of both drives.

RAID1 "Mirrored": The same data is written to both disks simultaneously, duplicating one drive to the other. This provides one disk fault tolerance, such that if a single drive dies, you won't lose any data. The total capacity is that of a single disk.

JBOD: Different sized drives can be used, and a single volume is created, the capacity of which is a combination of both. There is no speed benefit, nor any fault tolerance. This mode is useful only if you want an enormous disk volume and have different sized disks.

Single: Each drive is presented individually.

There are other RAID levels, but the TD2 doesn't offer them as it's not appropriate for a 2-bay device. Also, it's worth noting that RAID1 is not a backup. If data becomes corrupted on one disk, both are corrupted. RAID1 only protects against a single drive becoming unusable, not issues with the data itself. There is no error checking parity or bit-rot protection.

Speed Testing

The primary purpose of having a desktop RAID0 configuration is usually video editing, so I used the BlackMagic Speed Test app to evaluate RAID performance.

Of course, results are going to depend upon the drives you put in. The device can hold both spinning 3.5" HDDs or 2.5" SSDs, so I put it through its paces with both.

First, with two WD Red 4TB drives (CMR), RAID 0, I achieved 240MB/s write and 250MB/s read. This is roughly what I'd expect—not exactly double the performance of a single drive, but thereabouts. These drives are rated for reliability in a NAS environment, not high performance, so you could certainly achieve better with other disks.

Next, I swapped these about for two 1TB SSDs, and managed an average of 600MB/s write and 800MB/s read. The Samsung 860 EVOs I used are rated to around 500MB/s native read-write, which is slightly slower than theoretically possible in a striped RAID 0 configuration. Other drives may yield closer to the 810MB/s maximum read/write that TerraMaster states. This difference may also be accounted for the difference between sustained data transfer and random read/write. BlackMagic tests for the former—in this case, I used the largest 5GB test mode.

For comparison sake, the internal NVMe on my MacBook Pro registered as anywhere from 1400MB/s to 2000MB/s, with reads of around 2700MB/s.

Meanwhile, a single external spinning HDD connected with a USB3 dock scored 132MB/s write and 130MB/s read. In this case, the speed of the drive is the limitation, rather than the USB3.0 cable.

60W Power Delivery

Although Thunderbolt 3 specs allow for a significant amount of power to be transferred and a theoretical 40GB/s data transfer, the TD2 Thunderbolt 3 Plus is limited to 60W total. It can deliver that at 20V, 15V, or 9V. This sounds like a lot but may not be enough to provide all your device's power requirements. My MacBook Pro, for instance, is supplied with an 87W wall charger.

Plugging in just the TD2 displayed a charging status, but would still lose battery on occasion, usually when the machine was running full whack transcoding videos. This behavior was inconsistent though, and I suspect related to how many other devices were also plugged in through the TD2 itself and the Mac's other ports. On one occasion, I returned to find the power completely drained. Less powerful or more efficient laptops probably may not have an issue with this, and realistically, it's not intended as a replacement for your original charger. The latest M1-equipped 13-inch Macbook Air needs a meager 30W, which the TD2 Thunderbolt 3 Plus will happily supply.

Should You Buy the TerraMaster TD2 Thunderbolt 3 Plus?

Despite being fast for its price point, the TerraMaster TD2 Thunderbolt 3 Plus is perhaps overkill for most people. USB3.1 has more than enough bandwidth for a dual-SSD RAID0 storage, so it's only if you plan to daisy chain several other Thunderbolt devices (like a 4K monitor or three, or yet more storage) that you may see the benefits 40GB/s of bandwidth offers. But if that does describe you, and you need masses of fast storage attached to your Macbook, we can highly recommend the TerraMaster TD2 Thunderbolt 3 Plus. dealing with superblock error on linux

I switched on my computer running manjaro linux and encoutered a black screen with the following message:

mount: /new_root: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2, missing codepage or helper program, or other error. You are now being dropped into an emergency shell. sh: can't access tty; job control turned off [rootfs ]#

Then I burned ISO file onto a USB (the same system and desktop that i had on the laptop) opened command prompt and typed fsck /dev/sda2. fsck is a program that checks filesystem for errors.

How to use fsck to repair filesystem errors in Linux

You cannot run fsck on a disk that is mounted. To check what is mounted, you can use the file manager and go to the /mnt/ folder to see if your disk is there. Or you can run the command mount that shows what devices are mounted. Or you can run lsblk which shows information about block devices, including the mountpoint if there is any. (block device is a computer data storage device, so disk, usb, etc).

Unfortunately fsck did not work and it showed me this message

fsck.ext4: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while trying to open /dev/sda2 Could this be a zero-length partition?

Variants of fsck you can try are fsck.ext4 (ext4 is the linux filesystem). I googled a bit and found this resource:

fsck does nothing

So running it with the -f flag (force to check clean) did help. I figured I should get into the sda2 storage, and just take out my files I wanted to save and reinstall Manjaro from scratch. So I tried searching on options how to do that. The sda2 was not mounted so it could not be seen in the file manager from the live USB. So I looked for guidances on how to mount it Unfortunately mount failed and showed the same error as fsck did before.

Looking further I found How to recover from a bad superblock which links to Surviving linux filesystem failures This page tells you to run fsck, well this failed for me, so it says you should try it with some number that says where the superblock is … i guess? like for example e2fsck -f -b 8193 /dev/sda2

If you don’t know what number to use, you should run

mke2fs -n /dev/sda2

now ATTENTION mke2fs is a command that creates a filesystem, wiping out that disk. But! the -n flag means that mke2fs does not actually create a filesystem, but displays what it would do if it were to create a filesystem.

It output a bunch of numbers “Superblock backups stored on blocks: 32768, 98304, 163840, 229376, 294912, 819200, 884736, 1605632, 2654208, 4096000, 7962624, 11239424, 20480000, 23887872” So following one of the posts from above I tried running the command with the 1st number e2fsck -f -b 32768 /dev/sda2

It started at about 10 AM, it wrote Pass 1 bla bla.. At about 3pm it got to pass 5 then I went away and at about 4:30pm when i came back i saw a prompt asking me if i want to fix something and before that a wall of number codes. I pressed yes a couple times (it said free inodes count wrong for group xxxxx) and then it offered to press a to say yes to all. At the end it said /dev/sda2 **** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ****

So I am in the live session USB, i make a directory called storage2 in /mnt folder. and type mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/storage2 into the terminal. Now I can open this in the file explorer and see basically all the directories like bin, boot, dev, etc, home, lib, lib64, mnt, opt etc etc. Home is where my super precious files are. Like 1GB of pictures of some boy and a couple rare movies i illegally downloaded.

I inserted a sd card stuck in a usb sd card reader into the laptop, after doing lsblk it was listed there as sdc partitioned to sdc1 and sdc2. So i mounted it with mount /dev/sdc2 (the bigger one ) onto /mnt/temp. For some reason I couldnt create a copy files in the file manager there, so i had to be logged in as root in the terminal this whole time and do mkdir /mnt/temp and copy the files with cp -vr /mnt/storage2 /mnt/temp where /mnt/storage2 is the mountpoint of dev/sda2. After being done with backing up my files, I unmounted the sd card with umount /dev/sdc2 and the sda2 disk, opened GParted to do the partitions….. and snap. sda2 has the same error I started with, eg the short read error. So I ran e2fsck -f -b 32768 /dev/sda2 all over again. This time it goes by a little faster, 10 minutes elapsed and I am at Pass 5 and there was 1 error on Pass 1.

Now let’s learn something about partitioning.

You generally want to create 3 parittions when installing a Linux system:

Root: this is where the filesystem goes, and it is required to boot a Linux system.

Home: holds user and configuration files separate from the operating system files.

Swap: when the system runs out of RAM, the operating system moves inactive pages from RAM into this partition. It is also useful if you want to use functions like hibernate or suspend which is something like sleep in windows. It should be twice the size of RAM if RAM is less than 2GB, or the same size as RAM.

All partitions must be unmounted in order to be modified (this means you cannot resize a partition on a working system (since it is obviously mounted)). To create a new partition, you must have some unallocated space.

Manjaro installer manual partitioning. – all partitions that have a mount point specified will be used during the installation of Manjaro. !!! swap should have a linuxswap filesystem all others that you wish to access from linux can have ext4. Also, specifically for Manjaro, EFI system partition is necessary to start Manjaro. So you need to create a partition with the FAT32 filesystem, mount point /boot/efi and esp flag enabled.

The resulting partitions I did can be seen on this image:

I had some of the backup files on sda4 that is NOT mounted so that it was not touched during the re-installation of Manjaro.

In the Manjaro wiki They talk about primary and Extended partitions and that there can only be 4 primary partitions. The GParted gui talked about primary partitions on my drive, and my drive is GPT. But, GPT does not have a concept of primary partitions, it has only partitions and it can have about 128 of them. Extended partitions are only available on an MBR disk.

sudo su to get to root mode

exit to exit root mode

cp -rv foo bar copy directory foo and its contents to directory bar and print output on screen

rm -rf foo remove directory foo and its contents

lsblk to list disk and partitions plus some info
