omg it's the duel between pierre and dolokhov! (rambling analysis between the show and the book under the cut)
it's really interesting to compare these chapters to the duel (song). in the book, this happens far before the whole thing with anatole and natasha (like 6 years before). notably some characters & lines are different, all in favor of how the plot in the show has to move a lot faster, e.g. several paragraphs when dolokhov misses his shot become just three lines in the song ("missed, missed / oh my mother, my angel / my adoréd angel mother"). nesvitsky becomes anatole, and nikolay, who is dolokhov's second, is absent (denisov does get to stay though!) anatole being pierre's second is both for the convenience of a known character (the cast is cut WAY down in the show, for obvious reasons) and to further pierre & anatole's relationship for the audience. in the book, nesvitsky has to tell pierre how to hold a gun because he's never done so before (and then goes "oh yeah, i totally knew that. i just…forgot" because he doesn't want to admit it lol), which comes out in anatole's lines warning pierre to hold his fire. book pierre also seems more reluctant/willing to admit how stupid this is, but his apathy makes him go through with it (anatole is the one to acknowledge this instead, which is a great line because lucas steele is amazing "OOOOHHH this is horribly stupid :(", and pierre's apathy is shown in the show through his reply to hélène (who is there in the show but absent in the book, good for both showing their terrible relationship and to make the audience think pierre died for a sec) it makes sense for musical pierre to be more caught up in the heat of the moment though, and regret it afterwards, which leads nicely into dust & ashes

The Obsessive Second Male Lead Has Gone Wild - By Subi (6.5/10)
The tragic destiny part of this story gets retconned in chapter one. A special, magical mom fixes everything. The yandere backstory is very basic, and the fantasy setting is completely vanilla. I'm reviewing this one for a side character. The dad.
Rurutia was born with everything. She is the only daughter of the Burke family. Her family is comprised of insanely powerful fire mages. She's one of the most important noble.........She's not powerful and her father hates her. Woops.
When the story begins she's about to be married off...to a womanizer who will poison her and replace her when he gets bored of her. Her father sold her because she ran out of magic.
Her father hates her guts because his beloved wife died in childbirth. I actually kinda love this. Pethusha was his everything. He was obsessed with her. Everybody knows it, including Rurutia. He also...um...is and has been doing human experiments. He is actively trying to resurrect her.
He's not a nasty meanie.
He is 100% batshit insane and frankly he and Pethusha are the only two interesting characters in the story.
Rurutia does one cool thing. She kisses the priest officiating her wedding to get out of her marriage. This publicly humiliates her shitty fiance and he basically has to run off to save face.
Rurutia does not recognize the priest, but he knows her. She doesn't know he knows her.
Kynchel is the leader of the Templar Knights. They're a highly powerful group that kinda appeared out of nowhere. Kynchel was one of the child experiments Rurutia's father used.
She assumed he died, because the rest did, but no he's back ready to save his first and only love.
He doesn't tell her for no reason...which is annoying...
Like it's clear that he officiated her wedding to see if she was happy. He wanted to see her, and when she kissed him obviously he hoped she remembered him...when she doesn't he still wants to get hitched.
He does her bidding like a dog.
He beats up people for her etc...
But....Rurutia's horrible dad is the more interesting yandere.
A mysterious spirit has been feeding Rurutia important information. It's been solving all of her problems. It...could be her future self...but it's probably her mom. Rurutia did die pathetically in the last timeline, and now her special dead mom is interfering.
It gets....dumb.
Kynchel is a very doting...perhaps enabling?...yandere. He doesn't want or need Rurutia to do anything. She's a real mope. A sad sack. She really seems like a boring, unpleasant person but she's perfect to him.
It's nice I guess but literally all of their conversations are about how great she is...and of course by the end of the story she becomes a respected holy figure...
Petrusha is basically God. Pethusha secretly saved a fortune of gold for her child. Rurutia gets it after she shows a comb she inherited to the bank. It's a magical comb with her moms will on it.
She gets everything, and her special mom had ALOT.
I really would rather read a story about this couple.
Rurutia is a Mary Sue and Kynchel is boring.
