The closest I ever came to going vegan...
Okja (the super pig. Spoilers)
<Backstory: 'Poker Face' has an episode where a known BBQ guy goes vegan after watching Okja. So I had to see what it was about. Turns out, I like the director's work (All of it) and didn't realize he had such a wide variety of movies.>
Plot is after being paid to raise a super big GMO pig (sold as magic/miracle pig) for 10 years, it's supposed to go back to the company to be made into meat. Young girl doesn't want to give it up. Goes on an adventure to save it. And for a mostly light hearted romp, there is some graphic and violent scenes. Forced breeding, cops beating the FUCK out of people, and probably the most real to life walk thru of a meat processing plant in a movie I ever saw (non documentary).
In the end, at the processing plant, the evil CEO won't give up the pig cuz it's bad business. The girl gives up her solid golden pig statue (what her grandpa basically sold the pig for) in order to save it. And this is all after you saw, step by step, how they would go from killing to chopping up the meat*. So you already sat thru a lot...
but then, something I felt like you would see at a concentration camp. It rocked me...
As the girl is being escorted out with her pig, going by all the locked up and being systematically killed THOUSANDS of other pigs, some of the other pigs are curious and follow them. You don't understand why, until one starts to attack the electric fence, hurting itself. Then you see them push something thru...
THEIR FUCKING BABY!!!! They KNEW they were going to be killed, including their baby, so they took the only chance they had, and threw it to the people escaping. Okja hides the baby in her mouth. As they're walking away, all the other pigs (who have been raised separately) cry in unison as another gunshot to the head can be heard in the background....
GEEZ. I ....wow...you don't come out feeling great if you are a meat eater watching that movie. Cuz you know ALLLLLLL of that is true:
-rich people & businesses (and governments, since the FDA approved it in this movie) only care about the bottom line and will happily shove garbage, toxic garbage, down your throat. And lie every single time they can. <Also, marketing can make you believe anything if it's said loud and happy enough>
-our meat industry is SOULLESS. And we (honestly, self included) genuinely need to eat significantly less. For our health and the planet's health. I mean, do you really think making something live a terrible unhealthy caged life and then murdering it, that its' remains will be SUPER healthy for you? We are gross.
-Every living creature has a soul, can feel, can love, and can suffer.
-again, this is me reading into a foreign movie but FUCK traditions. This all happened cuz her grandpa hated her pet, and wanted her to get married? She was 14 in the movie; Let her live her fucking life.
<The thing that bugged me (little things annoy me): they lived on a mountain top/side. Their water pump was RIGHT at the edge of a cliff. Where the FUCK are you pumping water from? Is there small pockets of water in mountaintops? Do you have one LONG pipe? It just....it was so close to the edge of a MOUNTAINSIDE. Where was the water coming from?>
Either way, great movie (GREAT), but....I would genuinely say this borders on at least a HARD PG rating. If kids have never thought of or heard about this (rich corporations, the meat industry, marketing lies, etc), and find out what they see is MOSTLY true....it may fuck them up.
This is exactly why I like foreign movies too. There were so many times I went 'x happened, so now y happens' and I was pleasantly surprised. It still has some tropes, but nothing completely stolen.
Okja: Solid 8.2/10. My only complaint was tilda swtinon playing herself (AGAIN. How many times can she play 2 characters?), and the CGI kinda sucked. It wasn't horrible, but ain't winning fucking awards. And if it did...holy shit, low standards much?
ps-fav part? I have 2. The beginning, when Okja basically throws itself off a cliff to save the girl and the girl finds her just...farting around, fine, wanting attention. It was so like a pet. 2nd part? STEVEN YUEN! His WHOLE character arc. Also, him playing an asshat. Summary: he's part of a PETA like group, trying to free the super pig. But he lies to get the main girl to be forced to go along with them (and gets the SHIT beaten outta him for lying to the leader.) Then, in the end, he saves the main girl and the leader, outta no where, and shows that he got TATTOOED what his boss beat the shit out of him for doing on his arm. THAT is dedication. Get the shit beat out of you (your fault), kicked out of a group you gave your everything for, come back, AND get a tat to show your dedication? Geez...
*Meat. Why not dead animals? Name specific CUTS of meat instead of the body part... then go by animal. Beef, not dead cow. Pork, not dead pig. Poultry, not dead chicken.....we change the name so you feel less remorse for eating dead things we killed for our own ease (and we don't even do it. We pay others to do it, paying someone to take the guilt. How many if the only way we could eat meat was to kill the animal ourselves could do it ? WAY WAY less than you would think.)

One thing that eternally baffles me with people calling dog sports abusive, is how the offered alternative assumes that a dog is happiest when it is not doing anything.
Putting aside PETA and its anti-pet stance, most critique I have seen comes from people saying the dogs are forced to perform for humans and therefore its exploiting them.
But even a cursory understanding of dog breeds tells you this mentality is not only flawed but also ignorant of the needs of the animal.
For one, you cannot force a dog to do things most dog sports require. If a greyhound doesn't want to run, it won't. If a husky doesn't want to pull a sled, it won't. Have you ever seen a dog in a situation it doesn't like? Most of us have to drag our dogs to the vet and then try our best to mitigate the dog's displeasure towards the vet.
A dog who wants to do something like running or fetching will do it regardless of your opinion. That is why most of dog training is directing this want so the dog isn't destroying things or hurting people.
The breed or breed mix also affects things. If you get a chihuahua, the experience with that dog is completely different from a border collie or a husky. Heck, even closely related breeds like German shepherds and Belgian malinois are vastly different in their temperament and mentality. There is this call for ignorance and naivete in posts decrying dog sports, where breed doesn't exist and any kind of activity outside the home is harmful to the dog. Admitting that dogs have been bred for jobs is to admit that human contact is not always negative for animals and that is a bridge too far for many of these people. It also means that jobs such as ratting, hunting, protection and such are blissfully ignored or assumed to be forced by humans. This means that when a pampered terrier does maul the family guinea pig, the owner gets blamed for abusing the animals. Posts that tell you dog sports are evil are not made with the dogs in mind, they are made solely for an ideology that benefits humans who do not have to live with the animal in question and so can sit on their constructed high horse.

So I saw the phrase “meat factory” somewhere and had some thoughts. Logically I know they mean like a processing/packing plant, but there’s some interesting directions your brain can take that Here’s what comes to mind with the phrase “meat factory” in order of least to most alarming:
Factory where artificially made meat is mass produced for consumers
This actually kind of sounds okay???? I mean there are absolutely going to be The Same problems and New Problems but on the scale this would be the most acceptable
Really the only problem I personally have with this is PETA might like it
Factory where a cow or pig is treadmilled to a pair of presses that instantly collide, then pull away to reveal a perfectly formed pile of steaks, sausages, etc.
Honestly more cartoonish than anything unless it happens outside of a cartoon; then it’s horror
Factory where humans are processed into meat
Reasonably terrifying for a lot of reasons, unless your name is Hannibal Lecter
Classic horror fare for a reason
Factory where things that aren’t considered edible are converted to meat
Can be more or less freaky depending on what objects you use
I swear there was a Freaky Stories short about this once
Factory where it’s a regular factory except everything’s made out of meat
Horrible. Deeply unsettling just thinking about it
Probably the worst one
If it’s like processed and cooked meat and everything’s arranged like a playset or a Level Ate type scenario it’s kind of acceptable but other than that no. Absolutely not.
Factory where it’s a regular factory except everything’s made out of meat and it’s still moving
Scratch that this one’s worse on every level
Why does it move? What makes it move? When is it going to eat you back?
It undulates rhythmically
Compellingly
You want to see more
You want to learn more
You want to join the meat factory team
Join the meat factory team
Join the meat factory team
Join the meat factory
Join the team
Join the meat
Join the meat to the factory
Join the meat to the meat to the meat to the meat to the meat to the meat to the meat to the meat to the meat

I forget people on tumblr dont know Peta has had shares in fb since 2019. Meanwhile every person who raises animals has had to deal with the repercussions of that since then.
So insidious of Facebook, choking out lifestock forums and killing their population so they move to facebook groups then Peta comes in and starts banning discussion of selling or rehoming animals. This has led to loss of so much heritage livestock and information that were being kept around by dedicated breeders. A huge loss of genetic diversity to because its harder to exchange birds because everyone is on facebook and commenting or posting a post with a "flagged" word can get a whole group and all of its information deleted. And you wont be able to get that info back once its gone.
This also means people new to the hobby are less likely to get their information from an experienced keeper and are more likely to get their information from big companies who want to supply you with inferior animals and supply you with the products to raise those animals when there is better options out there.
My knowledge is mostly with chickens but i know sheep, goat, cow, pigeon, duck, geese, and pig people are suffering to.

Thoughts?
she’s a mess, joining peta alone is proof of that. I have also worked with lab animals in research, and it is extremely strictly regulated to provide ethical treatment for the animals. The article is also confusing because I’m not sure if she means she was trapping monkeys and importing them in the US to a lab (which is of course unethical) or if she means she was just collecting samples from wild and pet monkeys and using captive bred monkeys as lab animals?
Personally, I don’t agree with using primates as lab animals simply because they don’t follow the basic principles of what a good model organism should be. They’re very difficult and high maintenance, slow breeding (compared to other lab specimens used), and difficult to handle safely. There’s a reason you don’t see lab elephants or lab mountain lions. Mice, rats, gerbils, etc. are far easier to use as model organisms, even pigs would be preferred if you want an animal more closely related to humans.
This isn’t even getting into the heightened risk of zoonotic disease when working with primates.
Monkeys should really only be used if you are specifically researching monkeys themselves.
Anyway, lab animals are a necessity, but that doesn’t mean every animal species is appropriate for the job.

I said this in a repost but I feel like it deserves it's own post. DO NOT SUPPORT PETA. They might be called "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals" but that's not what they're about.
The first red flag is the term "animal rights" and their shitty attitude towards the term "animal welfare." Animal rights has the end goal of ending the use of animals for any reason, including companionship and medical reasons. It is not grounded in reality. Animal welfare on the other hand focuses on the wellbeing of animals, it acknowledges that humans and domestic animals rely on each other. Animal welfare promotes the ethical consumption of animal products, which is great because some people (like me) can't go vegan.
The second red flag is their euthanasia rates. The AKC and the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association have both denounced PETA because the euthanasia rate in one of their Virginia shelters was 99%. In 2022 they euthanized 79% of their cat intakes and 95% of the surviving cats were sent to kill-shelters (which actually aren't as bad as one might think, but you'd assume an organization like PETA would be anti-kill shelter). They euthanized 68% of their dog intakes, but only adopted out 4%. I could not find what happened to the other 28%, but if the cats were any indication they sent them to other shelters. They euthanized 78% of their animal intakes that were not cats or dogs. Ex-employees have repeatedly reported that many of the animals PETA euthanizes did not need to be euthanized.
The third red flag is their misinformation campaign. An excellent example is their anti-wool campaign that features a poster of a bloody lamb. If sheep are not shorn, they will heat exhaust and potentially die. Even animal sanctuaries shear their sheep. Shearing is like a hair cut, the skin is not touched. In other campaigns they intentionally omit information, such as practices being approved by vets in order to safeguard health (such as pregnant sows being separated from the other pigs, it's done to prevent fights).
The fourth red flag is their stance on pitbulls, that stems directly from the founder. The founder wrote a newspaper article calling for shelters to destroy all dogs that look like pitbulls. PETA itself has joined up with groups advocating for the ban of pitbulls. While I do admit that pits can be dangerous, and that a shit ton of behavior is genetic, banning all pits is ridiculous. Pits can be great dogs if trained and raised correctly, and banning them will lead to dogs dying, including dogs that aren't even pitbulls. Shelter and animal control workers are notoriously bad at identifying what is and isn't an American pitbull terrier.

Linked Universe as Hunger Games Victors Let's Go!
(I might make this an Au it depends on how much I would be able to explore with it, some things will change over time but the district should stay the same- Also feel free to send me suggestions! This needs a little TLC)
Time and Wild- District 11: Agriculture.
Time won his hunger games as a child and sort of became a huge celebraty in the capitol. Is most well known for his stature and cold attitude, wich became his defining trait when he grew up. Used to hate people from other districts (Saria died in the games when he was a kid). But as he grew up he realizes that the President and those in power are the ones to blame. He still has nightmares about Saria, and when he remembers what happened to Lullaby, who was in the games with him.
Wild, before his games, was much like his mentor. Distant and serious. Despite his prickly nature, he managed to get along with his fellow tribute, Flora and even made an alliance with four other tributes from other districts. They were ment to team up against another group, but there plan failed and there was an explosion that took out a large part of the arena. Wild was severely injured, he managed to survive but sadly lost his memories. It doesn't stop him from living his life though. He's a lot more open now, trying to make friends wherever he can and learing new recipes. Time is his quinea pig, much to the older man's simultaneous enjoyment and terror, as some of the stuff he comes up with is...concerning...
Malon and Twilight- District 10: Livestock.
Malon won her games when she was in part due to her strength and her charm during interviews. Despite being in different districts, Malon and Time are pretty close. (Capitol gossip states they're star crossed lovers brought together by shared trama. Partially true, but theres more than meets the eye going on in those hidden smirks and side glances) They understand each other, as Victors and as Mentores.
Twilight went into his games with Minda Malon was their mentor. Him and Midna had an alliance, but things went south, and she didn't make it. Twilight tries his best to be there for her family (like how Peta said he and Katniss would give their share of money to those who saved them) but they can't really look at each other without thinking of what happened. He blames himself. Malon stays with him some days because she's the only one who understands, both what it means to win and what it means to lose someone. Twilight just tries to go about his days, taking care of animals and Colin and the others.
Sky and Warriors- District 2: Masonry
Warriors was the result of a forbidden love between a Peacekeeper and a District woman, of course, when the capitol found out both were killed, leaving Warriors to fend for himself as hisnlother sucessfully hid him. He worked illegally in a factory till he was reaped at 17 and found a mentor in Sky.
Sky had been raised his whole life to become a Peacekeeper, he was enrolled in an academy to become one until he fell in love with the Headmasters Daughter. Coincidently, that year their relationship came into light was the year he was reaped (Probably intentional on the capitols part). Sky ended up winning his games due to his training and his emotional story about the love of his life gaining him fans.
Sky and Warriors have more of a brotherly bond, if anything. Due to them being close in age and their backgrounds with the peacekeepers.
Four- District 3: Technology.
Four grew up in District 3 with Dot. Four's Grandfather was a well known Inventor and Dot's father was the mayor.
Four was always an ambitious person, but he was also looked down on a lot. For his district, for his height, his personality. Dot never looked down on him though, so when he was reaped he knew he had to do his best to come home, to prove everyone wrong once and for all. And he did. But upon coming home he found his Grandfather had died while he was in the games. Now he stays in his house most days, tinkering on something, only coming out if absolutely nessary.
Hyrule- District 12: Mining.
Hyrule is a street rat from District 12. For the most part growing up he'd do odd jobs to survive, most of it in the black market doing illegal medical pratices. His plan was to hold out till he was old enough to become an apprentance to a doctor, but he didn't have to. He was reaped with Aurora, who volunteered as tribute in Dawn's place. Hyrule and Aurora managed to make it very far in the games, becoming one of the final three. Sadly Aurora fell victim to one of the capitals traps and passed. Now Hyrule and Dawn live together, connected by shared loss.
Legend- District 1: Luxury.
Legend was abandoned by his Grandfather after the death of his parents and left to be taken care of by his uncle. They weren't rich by any means, but they made due with what they had. Then his uncle died. Legend tried to reach out to his family and was eventually taken back in at his sister's (Fable's) request. His Grandfather didn't like him, so he was still mistreated. Once the reaping took place his classmates, Marin and Ravio got chosen. Legend, not wanting to see his friends hurt volunteered in Ravio's place and made a promise to Marin that theyd keep each other safe. If only he could have kept that promice.
Wind- District 4: Fishing.
Wind's Grandmother was a Victor in her games, the money from which us what he and Aryll lived on growing up. So, when his Grandmother becomes sick and money becomes tight, wind volunteers for the next reaping (much to the anger of a certain "Pirate Queen"). His mentor is Linebeck, They didn't get along at first, Wind found his affinity for alcohol and arrogant nature as something that wouldn't help his chances of winning. But Linebeck has more up his sleeve then the little sailor knows. They had a promise that if wind doesn't make it, linebeck will take care of Aryll and his Grandmother for him.
