What do you think about Pet Sematary and both film adaptations?

Of the three, the book is definitely the best. I'm not a huge fan of either movie adaptation, although I prefer the 2019 film. The 1989 film is more faithful to the book, but I personally don't mind the changes in the new one. I don't really have a specific reason but I just don't like the 1989 movie.

Some issues I have with Pet Sematary that make it hard for me personally to read: the ableism surrounding Rachel’s sister, Zelda, and the inaccurate portrayal of the w*ndigo. I understand that the ableism sorta makes sense within it’s context (it’s supposed to be bad), but it still makes it hard for me to read. As for the w*ndigo, if you’re interested, Stolen Spirits: The Appropriation of the W*ndigo Spirit in Horror Literature is a research paper (can be accessed for free through a Google search of the title) that explores inaccurate portrayals of the w*ndigo in Western media and how they perpetuate stereotypes of the cultures from which they originate. To sum it up with a quote from that paper, “Depicting the w*ndigo as a monster targeting white people in Maine misrepresents the purpose and existence of the w*ndigo, as it is no longer representative of the Native environmental and cultural struggles it stems from”. I don’t think Stephen King is a bad person for doing this (he didn’t intentionally cause harm), but I do think it’s important to acknowledge. He should’ve just made up his own creature or came up with a different back story for the cemetery instead of borrowing a creature from another culture that he doesn’t fully understand. I’ve censored the name of the creature out of respect for these cultures because it is believed that saying the name can summon the creature.

Overall, I enjoyed reading the book. It’s one of his better novels and definitely worth reading. As for the movies, I’m indifferent. I wouldn’t mind watching either one, but I don’t feel the urge to re-watch them.
