Ranunculus asiaticus (Persian buttercup)

Let’s face it, Persian buttercups are just plain beautiful - and that’s not just my opinion. In March 2023, Canada Post issued two lovely Persian buttercup stamps (see photo number 4, copied from the Canada Post website). However, the original wildflower species looks nothing like any of these exotic, modern hybrid varieties.

In the Eastern Mediterranean, Ranunculus asiaticus has a single row of five petals. Modern hybrids demonstrate quite extreme doubling which means a lot more than just twice as many petals (as you can see). Doubling is a very rare mutation in wildflowers but by gardeners selectively breeding, generation after generation over thousands of years, you end up with this type of beautiful ‘monstrosity’.

Incidentally, the wild five petal Ranunculus asiaticus is so rare in its original habitat that it’s protected in many places, including Israel.

Yesterday I had a really shitty day. I had lost my phone on an Uber drive and I hadn't heard back from the driver at all. My SO is currently back home, half across the world and I miss him terribly. I was really down at work and kicking myself. Then I heard the door go (usually means it's a customer) so I appeared from the back. The guy asks me by my name, I say yes. Then he hands me this huge pink bouquet parcel. I was stunned, like are you sure? He hesitated a bit and was like yeees... *patting his pockets, found a note* from "my SO's name".

It also had the sweetest note in my first language (he can speak it but we usually speak in English). I almost started crying right then and there. They are one of my favorite flowers, the Persian buttercups.

Once in a lifetime movie character moment right there.

the flowers are mostly the same on the second set of cards, though some are changed (notably Len who now has different flowers to Rin), and a few others gain or lose a flower or two. Tsukasa has fuchsias, An has paperflowers, airi i think has blossom and ena i think has yellow lupins now and that's as far as my flower knowledge goes.

Ranunculaceae is a large family of plants (sometimes called the buttercup family) with over 2000 species in 43 genera but this plant is the one that most people think of when they hear the word Ranunculus. This species is a popular garden flower world-wide, especially this type of double-flowered cultivar. This year we splurged and bought two of them for the back deck.
