Cherry-plum ice lollies

So, we have a tree that planted itself in the back garden, and last year it had three fruits. They had beautiful reddish-bronze skins, yellow pulp, a single stone, and were just a little bit bigger than cherries. I ate the three fruits, which tasted like tart plums, and assumed it was some kind of plum tree.

Last year I also planted a proper sweet cherry tree.

This year the extra-tiny-plums tree was covered with fruit. The tree itself is barely as tall as I am and only a couple of inches around the trunk, so it has to be a sapling, but I still went out there with a soup bowl which I piled high with tiny plums and had to come back for a second bowl to do the same with that.

And there's still another couple of bowls worth waiting to be picked.

At this point I was like 'I've really got to find out what this thing is,' and googled for "what kind of tree has bronze plums the size of cherries?"

It turns out there is in fact such a thing as a cherry-plum tree. Or rather there are two things both of which are known as cherry-plum trees.

“Cherry plum” can refer to Prunus cerasifera, a group of Asian plum trees that are often planted in UK gardens as ornamental trees and which will then put out suckers from their roots and spread--this may be how we got a cherry-plum volunteer in the garden, or

"Cherry plum" can refer to a hybrid cross of plum and cherry trees, which, and I quote, "have dark red skin, yellow flesh, and small pits." Which certainly matches my mystery tree

A salient point about the second sort is that it is cross pollinated by cherry trees, and given that ours only began producing masses of fruit after we put the cherry tree in, it seems likely that ours is a cherry-plum type 2.

This is extra mysterious given that it clearly isn't over 15 years old (when we moved in) but I certainly didn't plant it.

However, I'm not looking a gift fruit tree in the mouth. I immediately looked up "how to preserve cherry-plums" and came across this post on permacultureprinciples. com suggesting that they be boiled, sieved through a collander (to remove skin and pits) and the pulp used for making ice pops.

Wow! That ice pop is a powerful flavour! It's really good. I added some sugar to the juice because it was extremely tart, and now it's like a sour candy. None of this watery, barely-there flavour you sometimes get with home made ice. This is knock-your-socks off stuff. And it's one of your five a day.

Thank you to whatever mysterious force that gave me a cherry-plum in the garden. I suspect cherry-plum ice lollies are going to be a feature of the summer from now on.

On International Permaculture Day, @cropswapaustralia had several swap meets happening. One was at @mosshouseau, and had everything from a loaf of bread (it didn't even hit the table) to tomatillos! Permaculture was developed in Australia and comes from the concept of “permanent agriculture.” It combines sustainable agriculture, landscape design and ecology to grow more food, in less time, and for less money. A permaculture is an approach to designing perennial agricultural systems and human settlements that imitate the relationships found in natural systems and ecologies. Permaculture is easy to begin implementing on a small scale, it significantly improves your food production, soil will continue to be nourished, and most concepts require little maintenance once they are established. One principle of permaculture is to produce no waste. This could mean composting vegetable scraps, yard trimmings, animal manure, or introducing red worms into your soil to eat food scraps and convert them into feed for your soils, naturally and basically free. Another, use your edges. No space is insignificant in permaculture. Plant in pots on decks or patios. Create horseshoe shaped garden beds so you can stand in a “keyhole” and use the rest for planting. Grow heat loving vines like beans, grapes, melon or squash along brick or stucco walls to utilize stored thermal heat. The first principle of permaculture: Observe and interact. It would have been easy to mistake these raspberries for the himalayan blackberries invasive to our region. Spending time meandering the yard, looking before cutting, helped preserve these high yield plants. Next summer we'll put them on a trellis and have an even better crop. I can't emphasize enough how much value there is in looking deeply at the land you steward; it is likely someone has done work you can build on. The wild rosebuds opened in this vase of water, showing off their beautiful blooms. Will the raspberries ripen the same way? Probably not, but I can't resist an experiment. My leather gloves are now berry stained in addition to being shiny and holey with wear. I am proud of them. #permies #permacultureprinciples
