Friday, April 21: Halford, “Screaming in the Dark”

“Screaming in the Dark” was one of three new studio tracks tacked to the end of Live Insurrection, acting as something of a victory lap for the Halford band after the warm reception awarded to Resurrection. And as the only newly written studio number (the other two were refurbished from unused Priest demos), the tune was sort of a bridge between Resurrection and Crucible, leveraging the trad metal framework of the former with the increased bite of the latter. And with the chugging central riff over which Rob Halford literally screamed in the dark the entire time, it felt like a natural predecessor to Crucible’s “Betrayal”. Halford as a band wasn’t a commercial juggernaut, and years later Rob would claim that he only started it up to show his former colleagues in Priest he was ready to make traditional heavy metal again in hopes of them taking him back. This was unfair to the band, because the songs and performance were all there, and “Screaming in the Dark” was a killer banger in its own right.

Severance actress Dichen Lachman is going ape. Lachman, who plays a key role opposite Adam Scott in the buzzy Apple TV+ show, has joined the chest-thumping cast of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, 20th Century Studio’s latest Planet of the Apes movie.

The new Apes movie is set many years after the conclusion of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. Many apes societies have grown from when the Moses-like Caesar brought his people to an oasis, while humans have been reduced to a feral-like existence. Some groups have never heard of Caesar, while others have contorted his teaching to build burgeoning empires.

In this setting, one ape leader begins to enslave other groups to find human technology, while another ape, who watched his clan be taken, embarks on a journey to find freedom. A young human woman becomes key to latter’s quest, although she has plans of her own.

The screenplay is by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Patrick Aison.

Shooting is underway in Australia with Freya Allan, Owen Teague, William H. Macy and Kevin Durand among the key players.

It is unclear who Dichen is playing.

The Kathmandu, Nepal-born actress played a black market dinosaur dealer in Jurassic World Dominion, which grossed over $1 billion dollars when it was released last year. She also voiced General Atitaya in Disney Animation’s Raya and the Last Dragon.

In Severance, Lachman played a wellness counselor with an unusual connection to the company worker played by Scott. The show was renewed for a second season with Lachman due to return.

Lachman is repped by Gersh, Management Production Entertainment, and Ginsburg Daniels.

Friday, April 8: Halford, “Slow Down”

“Slow Down” was an aptly titled mid-paced groover that changed things up a bit after several manic Resurrection numbers. Rob Halford’s first record under the Halford band banner was deliberately intended to let everyone- especially his then-former bandmates- know that he was ready and committed to once again making “Priest-style heavy metal”, and this track certainly fit that description. The power chords smoothly mowed the pavement and allowed the Metal God’s strident tenor to both cut through and float over the background, and while Bobby Jarzombek’s drumming was far more technical than any post’-79 Judas Priest record, he kept things moving forward. What was also nice was that while “Slow Down” was very much a traditional heavy metal number that recalled Rob’s past, it wasn’t overtly indebted either musically or lyrically to anything specific that came before- there were thankfully no call backs either to riffs, lyrics or titles. In that respect, the track made a strong case for Halford being a viable working band, and indeed that’s what they proved to be for a couple years, even though their leader had other plans all along.
