Mother’s Day
A loud knock coming from the front door almost went unnoticed. Sona had been upstairs, staring at herself in the mirror. She’d already dressed, set her hair, put on makeup... all the usual motions. But once she was done with all that, what was left?
To answer the door, apparently.
As usual, the person at her door was surprised to see the lady of the house answering herself. No matter how many couriers or delivery people came by or how regularly, it never stopped being weird to them - the upper class had maids and attendants for these sort of things, after all.
Sona looked over the courier curiously. They were carrying a bouquet of wildflowers and a letter. From a fan, perhaps?
“Ah- Madame Buvelle?” the young woman asked hesitantly. Sona hadn’t seen her before. Perhaps she was new at her job? She nodded, and the woman looked just a little relieved. “Pardon my intrusion, m’lady, but I have a delivery for you from one... uh...” she looked down at the card for the name, “... Samantha Heatherbow?”
The Maven’s glassy expression sprang to sudden life with surprise. <Samantha?>
She eagerly took the letter and opened it on the spot, her hands almost shaking too much to make it possible. It was indeed Samantha’s writing when she glanced over the page; she was young yet, and had a long way to go in terms of penmanship and learning to read in general. Though it looked as if someone had helped her write certain parts. Her adoptive parents, perhaps.
<So she’s finally with them...> Sona thought, already feeling tears welling up in her eyes.
“Miss Sona,
Happy Mothers’s day! Did you get the flowers? It took me a h whole day to get enough flowers for you and my mama. Papa helped and I gave you the porple ones. Papa said we get flu flowers for mothers’ this munth because the flowers bloom now after a long winter. It’s sim sem symbolic. That’s what papa says.
Your not my mama but I wanted to send you flowers because you helped me find my new mama and pa to! They were happy when my rist got bettur. We went home. I have a house now! Mama showed me how to plant parsnaps parsnips. I watch them every day.
We have a dog! His name is Foxer. Papa says he protekts us. He is a very good dog. He licks my face. He likes to chase antler mose. Foxer is a very silly dog.
Thank you for ha helping me find my new famly. I hope you come viset me sometime!
- Samantha Heatherbow”
“... madame?” the courier asked, feeling somewhat uncomfortable in the silence as Sona read the letter. The noblewoman didn’t even bother hiding her tears or her crying face from the delivery woman. She was too happy. And sad. And relieved. And... so many things.
“Do you need a handker- m--my lady?!”
<Thank you!> Sona thought, suddenly hugging the poor, confused woman who still held her flowers. She knew the courier wouldn’t be able to hear her, but she was simply so overcome.
Despite anything that had happened in the past couple of months, it was all worth it to know Samantha would be happy. That someone in all this would have a fresh start at a new and wonderful life.
Though the poor, confused delivery woman would end up being behind schedule at this rate. At least she’d be getting a very nice tip.
