but it does help. nobody expects the villain team with the silliest name to know and predict and counter every single action they take. after all, all 3 members have powers suited to do just that.

(aiura still really wanted to be called We See You though. so did toritsuka. but once the PRT has a codename its nearly impossible to get anyone to call you anything else)

Biotinker creations with a Lifespan tied to a civilian who in turn cannot be more than 5 feet away from another parahuman tasked with killing the biotinker creations in question

There's so much more ideas I could give but I can't come up with them all right now and maybe I'll come up with some cruel, cruel ideas to use or you will come up with something I'll use

The omegaverse and adjacent stuff will also still be a thing here but not for every parahuman just some of them (unlucky lmao)

5up is absolutely an important character in this AU (although at this point, everyone has their own things going on lol)

so, to understand how characters get their powers, everything is focused around something called a trigger event: on the worst day of your life, when you're at your breaking point, a power can slip in. This power doesn't solve any of the problems, but is shaped by the events surrounding the event. tldr: trauma gives you superpowers but theres Other Stuff going on in the background

5up has a Stranger power: this means that his trigger event involved a threat to emotional and mental security or social or collective pressure, or unwanted attention (from the parahumans wiki).

So, pre-trigger!5up was already good at gathering information, breaking into places, and finding out details that he really REALLY has no business knowing. So, he decided to become an info broker. A casual one, nothing super serious or in depth. He treated it as like-- a fun side hobby where he'd sell information as a ""cape"" identity. HOWEVER. someone snitched on him, spilled the beans, and all of a sudden, one of the people who 5up had sold information on had decided that it's a good time for informant!5up to.... "retire". The reality of the situation, the whole 'oh god oh fuck this isnt fun anymore' combined with a desperate need to 'disappear' this "cape" identity before things escalate too far, led him to trigger with a Stranger power.

Notes/misc ideas:

Tay has her post-canon short haircut.

Lisa usually wears her hood pulled down to show off the purple eye, casting her real eyes in shadow.

Alec decorated her gun (he was bored).

I really do have a thing for purple visors, huh?

This made me realise how post-apocalyptic the warlord arc was already. I barely had to change Skitter's costume at all.

Brian: a good mix of practicality and style. leather jackets with slacks and a touch of goth here and there. wondering how many times he can wear band tshirts and get away with it before Aisha notices. Rachel: almost exclusively jeans, tanktops and jackets. tried a long-sleeved shirt once and it ripped from her biceps. Aisha: practically the icon for emo punk girls everywhere. she does not own a single pair of pants that haven't been strategically ripped, and if an accessory doesn't have spikes, she's not wearing it.

Alec: Dresses almost exclusively to piss people off by mismatching different kinds of clothing and aesthetics. occasionally will come out with a stunningly good outfit just to keep everyone else on their toes Sabah: competing with Lisa for drippest. has a closet full of pre-organized outfits for the week. lots of layers, specific color palettes. academia aesthetics. Lily: midway point between Brian and Rachel. sticks to leather jackets, jeans and boots for the most part, but if Sabah asks nicely will occasionally wear a suit.

So here's Bonesaw! She needs to stop thinking of other human beings and little more than art supplies. And being stuck on the Train for an indeterminate length of time will forcibly separate her from Jack, so she can begin to build an identity of her own for the first time in her life.

A Brockton Bay without Coil is an interesting scenario to me, because it would so severely shift the power balance that the city would be utterly unrecognizable when compared to canon.

Because unlike how fanfic commonly depicts Coil, he is a known factor. His powers aren't. But Coil and his mercenaries are one of BB's 3 powerful gangs.

Take him out of the picture (let's say the asshole has a brain aneurysm) and the entire structure of the criminal world in Brockton would be radically different from canon.

For example, there's no Undersiders. Rachel would likely remain a solo villain, extremely distrustful of anyone and everyone, though she could end up in a team, maybe with Trainwreck since Wildbow does say that they'd have gotten along. Alec would've just kept drifting along, piecing together his own personal morality based on not wanting to be his dad. Brian'd still be an enforcer for whoever would hire him, trying in vain to save up enough to get custody of Aisha, though I could see him making a small team of his own. And Lisa probably keeps pickpocketing until somebody realizes her potential, hero or villain.

So many factors of canon would be completely non-existent without Coil (no Dinah kidnapping, no Trainwreck infiltrating the Merchants, no Chariot in the Wards, probably no Leviathan attack, so on) that the creation of an interesting AU just from that is a gold mine for a fic.
