Building off of that previous thread, IMO the most interesting interpretation of Mario canon is "all the events depicted are canon, but the games themselves may not be".
By that, I'm talking about the way a lot of the games have an element of diegetic storytelling: Super Mario Bros 3 frames itself as a stage play, Paper Mario frames itself as a storybook, Super Mario 64 has a cameraman following Mario around, The Thousand-Year Door frames itself as a stage play inside a storybook, and so on. I think that the most fun way to interpret this is that those games are depictions of popular media in the Mario universe which are, themselves, dramatized and/or sanitized versions of Mario's actual exploits.
Mario is canonically a major celebrity in his own universe; no matter how far he travels, half of everyone he meets recognize him on sight, and media depicting his adventures are likewise popular in-universe (in Mario Odyssey, you can visit a movie theater showing a screening of the original Super Mario Brothers). Even in the sports games, he's shown to have more sponsorship deals than even the most prolific IRL athletes.
So basically, here's my headcanon: when it comes to games like TTYD, all the major events actually happened. Peach was kidnapped by a crazy cult of astronauts, Mario did travel to Rogueport and all those other locales, he did befriend all those characters, and so on...
However. The real story didn't go exactly as depicted in the game. The epilogue points out that, after the adventure ended, Madame Flurrie and Doopliss went on to star in a stage production based on the adventure, and I submit that after that, someone went on to produce a best-selling illustrated novel (and/or pop-up book) based on the play. All of the "paper" bits were either added for comedic effect, or are cleaning up a messy part of the story to make it more palatable for a wider audience. Consider the black chests: in the game, they're treated as a bit of a joke, "cursing" Mario with the ability to fold himself up into a paper plane, boat, and so on, which allows him to bypass otherwise insurmountable obstacles. But what if the reality was a bit darker? What if, when the "real" Mario found the chests, the curse was a little less "ha-ha funny" and more "body horror-y"? Obviously, that would be a no-go if you want to publish a book for all ages, so it got bowdlerized into what we see now.

Unprompted SPM Headcanon: O'Chunks has moderate hearing damage. That is all.
Bonus: Him infamously calling Mario "Maria" isn't him deliberately being an arse, or a facet of him being plum-fucking stupid, but rather he genuinely misheard.

i forgot to say but i do hc that ttyd takes place during 2004 - like time wise
early days of the internet… they probably had those big bulky computers …. technology probably works different in the rogueport-verse so i’ll have to work on that
the mailbox SP was probably their first handheld device for them

I headcanon that despite being a shy person in general, and a little anxious when talking to people he doesn't know, Luigi loves oral storytelling.
At the end of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Luigi is shown talking on the plane ride home, eliciting laughter from everyone around him.
Tumblr media
In Super Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Luigi regales his brother with stories about his adventures whenever you talk to him at Rogueport. Even though Mario and his companion will fall asleep while the story is told, Luigi seems to pay no mind and continue unhindered, (and apparently it was interesting enough for a journalist to be drawn in and spin the story into a bestselling book, so there's that.)
Tumblr media
On a quiz on the official Play Nintendo Website, Luigi is listed as a good candidate to speak at a graduation because "he'd probably tell great ghost stories."
Tumblr media
And in Super Mario RPG, Luigi is the one who guides the player through the manual, and subsequently is the one who recounts the events of the first scene in story format.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think if he's comfortable enough around you to talk freely, he'll immediately shift into audiobook mode upon request.

Maskless Dimentio design dropping in soon.
Dimenchant and Viola will start sometime during the Bowser fight near the end of Luigi’s Escape Plan.
While y’all wait, let’s play the guessing game with my personal headcanon on Dimentio’s true face!
This is heavily leaning on the “He’s an Ancient” theory. Here are my notes which are also your hints ☺️

systems will see a character with amnesia and another version of themself and be like BUT WHAT IF I GAVE HIM DID? and so i did. anyway. Mr. L is an alter for Luigi and no he is not evil he is just mischievous and sometimes evil but in a funny way. like in canon. this is him and luigi first speaking to each other in luigi’s mind, after everything

HEAR ME OUT GUYS
Instead if Count Bleck officiating a wedding between Bowser and Peach, it’s between Bowser and Luigi?
And like, in context nothing really changes! Its still very much:
Bowser: Thanks for setting all this up bleck :)
Count Bleck: Sure bruh, it helps me more than it helps you
Luigi: how did i get here

First of all, love your writing and art, it is immaculate ✨👌. Second, I may have missed it, but have you ever explored/explained how Dimentio lost his eye? I'm a tad curious
Also cookie 🍪
i have but i also love hurting dimentio and wanted to draw mamma so here we go again in rushed sketch form (his mom was actually really smart but this was an especially "spicy little concoction" you might say)

well, she managed to protect MOST of him, at least

Seeing as you got an ask regarding Mr. L, what would Mario do once he realized it was Luigi? How do you think Mario would go about confronting and saving his brother?
This is a really tough one because I can't imagine Mario ever physically going against Luigi, no matter how far gone or dangerous. 🥺 He could never. The risk of accidentally hurting his brother would be much too high, and the resulting guilt and horror would be much too strong.
In a previous post, I hypothesized that he would likely try to verbally reason with him instead... But would be met with very limited success at first, if any. 😔 He would block and dodge Mr L's attacks as best he can, but without returning a single hit; essentially losing the fight on purpose. 💔
The way he would go about trying to save Luigi would depend on the context surrounding his brainwash/amnesia. Would Count Bleck or Dimentio be involved? Would the scenario follow elements from the paper games? In any case, Mario's heartfelt perseverence and Luigi's buried -but adamant- memories would play a big part in his eventual liberation in my version. 🤲❤️‍🩹

Nastasia's brainwashing taking someone's evil side and bringing it to the forefront? That's fine, sure...
... but what if it's not the evil part of you that gets amplified so much as it is a twisted version of who you desire to be?
Paper Luigi has shown signs of desperately chasing a sense of perfectly-earned pride. He wants to be a hero like his brother! He wants to do grand, daring deeds and inspire awe in everyone around him! As Mr. L? Wish granted! You're a completely self-absorbed jerk who doesn't need to so much as lift a finger before feeling like you're better than everyone else.
On the flip side, what about a Mario who wishes he could be a bit more emotionally vulnerable, or openly express his worries/frustrations, but feels like he can't without troubling those around him? But as Mr. M? Wish granted! Mr. M is nothing but a big bundle of emotional vulnerability who is consistently spewing his thoughts and feelings all over the place.
You feel me? You see my vision here?

Is team Bleck superstitious?
In honor of Friday the 13th, here are some superstition headcanons for each member of team Bleck!!
Count Bleck is slightly superstitious. He used to believe in a lot of the superstitions from the Tribe of Darkness, but after meeting Timpani and learning about life outside of the Tribe he realized that a lot of the things the Tribe believed in didn't make sense. The only one he still believes in is the full moon bringing bad luck.
Nastasia is not superstitious, it just doesn't make sense to her. She does not even notice things that have to do with superstition. She does feel bad for black cats, though. They don't deserve the hate.
O'Chunks is superstitious, even if he swears he's not. He's a bit on edge on Friday the 13th, as if he's expecting something bad to happen even though he knows better. He doesn't pay enough attention to the lunar cycle to notice the full moon, but when Mimi points it out he gets a little bit nervous. He would never walk under a ladder and when he accidentally breaks a mirror he has to try really hard not to freak out. He's also picked up a few other superstitions from being in the army. The only thing he doesn't worry about is black cats. How can something so small and cute be bad luck?
Mimi isn't superstitious, but she loves the ominous aesthetic. On Friday the 13th she dresses up extra spooky and goes out of her way to do everything she can think of to break superstitions. She breaks mirrors, walks under ladders, pets black cats, etc. She also likes the full moon, but it's less of a rare occasion so she doesn't "celebrate" as much. She does wear a moon-themed outfit though.
Dimentio is also not superstitious, but he loves to mess with people who are. On the full moon he will sneakily set up things to go wrong throughout the castle, and on Friday the 13th he only doubles his efforts.
Mr. L doesn't believe in any of the typical superstitions, but he has developed his own. He's got a whole list of things that he avoids because otherwise Brobot is totally going to catch fire again. Half of these things are Dimentio's fault, but L doesn't know that.
