i’m seeing 2 different doctors at the uni hospital - a gynecologist and an internist. the gynecologist ordered bloods my first visit, which she never gave me. i got them from the internist after asking and my CA 19-9 was moderately elevated, which is elevated enough to possibly be cancer, although most of the time the cause of elevated CA 19-9 is a benign disease. but all the internist said about it was “you’re not young so it’s not cancer” and when i asked the gynecologist, she didn’t even apologize for forgetting to give them to me and just said “a lot of times it’s elevated for no reason” (maybe true for slightly elevated but not when it’s elevated enough to possibly be cancer - it’s usually caused by something, whether malignant or benign. completely healthy people don’t just produce loads of CA 19-9). and she only told me she’d retest for it next month after i pointed out it can be caused by gi diseases, WHICH I HAVE THE SYMPTOMS OF. i mean it probably is a benign cause but now i get to go around having fleeting paranoid thoughts about having pancreatic cancer and kicking it because the uni hospital wanted to ignore me and my test results. and even if it’s not cancer, they’re a hospital??? they’re also supposed to diagnose and treat benign diseases???

There are over 200 types of cancer. Breast, prostate, and bowel cancers are the most common, while kidney, skin, and pancreatic cancer are less common. Then there are the rare cancers, like adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). Also known as cancer of the adrenal cortex, ACC is a tumor that develops on the outer layer of the adrenal gland. Only one in one million people has it, and it’s more prevalent among women than men.
Adrenal glands are the triangle-shaped organs that sit on top of each kidney and produce hormones that give the body feminine or masculine features. They also help balance blood pressure and water and salt in the cells. As such, the growth of a tumor in the adrenal gland impairs the gland’s ability to regulate key bodily functions.
An ACC tumor may be functioning or non-functioning. A functioning ACC tumor causes the overproduction of hormones like testosterone, cortisol, or estrogen. A non-functioning ACC tumor does not impair hormone production.
Due to the nature of the hormones impacted by functioning ACC tumors, ACC affects men and women differently. Overproduction of testosterone in women, for instance, may cause acne, no menstrual periods, balding, and hair growth on the face. Too much estrogen in men may lead to impotence, lower sex drive, and enlarged breasts. Overproduction of cortisol may lead to high blood sugar, weight gain, or high blood pressure.

Hello! Myself, Nikhita Hasani, 31 yrs old from Chandrapur. It all started on September 2012 when I had back pain for the first time. Since it was back pain we thought it is some muscular pain so we visited an orthopaedic doctor and started taking medicines. But even after taking medicines for ten long days there was no sign of improvement then we visited other doctors took other medicines but the pain just became unbearable day by day. After bearing this pain for one and a half months, finally we decided to do an ultrasound and the results were quite shocking I had some nodes near my pancreas and a 6cm cyst covering my right ovary. Our radiologist suggested to quickly move to bigger city for other tests. Though I was not very serious about it and thought it was just a ovarian cyst which is quite common in females but my family was very concerned and wanted me to undergo other investigations. Without wasting time we moved to Mumbai and on November 2, I was operated at Leelavati Hospital and after the biopsy of the ovarian cyst I was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma of the ovary, a type of blood cancer which is one of the most aggressive type of cancer. After the surgery I took almost 6 cycles of chemo in SL Raheja Hospital, Mumbai but during the 6thchemo the pain in my back and upper abdomen was so severe that I just couldn't complete the chemo and after CT scan, MRI and Endoscopy, I was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis in April 2013. Since then, I had frequent attacks within few months and every time I had pain we rushed to Global Hospital, Mumbai. After a few attacks acute pancreatitis was declared as chronic. In October 2013 we did stenting after which I was pain free for around one and a half year. In the meantime, I got pregnant and delivered a normal healthy baby in October 2014. I thought I am cured now but in April 2015 again I had a major attack, was admitted in Chandrapur then went to Mumbai leaving my six month old baby behind. Doctors tried to stent again but the PD was so dilated that it was impossible to stent. I was on liquids only for more than a month but there was no solution to my pain and doctors suggested surgery of pancreas. My husband was not ready for it although I was ready to go through anything to get rid of this pain.
