Palmetto Bluff on the May River, Bluffton South Carolina

You may want to jot this one down if you are planning a visit to coastal Georgia or South Carolina. Located between Savannah and Charleston and close to all the high tourist areas, you may just find Palmetto Bluff offers all the amenities without the crowded surroundings.

The residential areas are private but the “Village” is accessible to visitors. A gate pass is required and there is shopping, dining and walking areas that can fill up the afternoon. Accommodations for longer stays are available at private cottages or the Montage at Palmetto Bluff.

The Chapel overlooks the River. An interesting fact is that the Chapel pews were handcrafted from 3,000 pounds of refurbished antique heart pine recovered from a New York City building destroyed on September 11, 2001.

The Ruins of the great Mansion that caught fire in 1926. Owned by R.T. Wilson Jr Multi-Millionaire

“Palmetto Bluff was comprised of 21 plantations during the antebellum era. One of the plantation owners, Thomas Fenwick Drayton, was also the commander of the Confederate soldiers at Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island during the Battle of Port Royal. When General Drayton went up against his own brother Captain Percival Drayton, commander of the Federal gunboat, the Confederate forces were easily defeated and forced to order a retreat.”

Boutique shopping, dining, post office, and a gourmet market open to visitors

Walk under the hanging moss on the brick-paved sidewalks. Keep an eye open for a wide variety of wildlife along the way.

The community offers a schedule of events, water sports rentals, a boat ramp, bike rentals and a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course.
