Welcome Home x Artist!Reader
Words: 3,091
|Contains: Fluff.|
Synopsis: Your hobby is painting and resting. You have recently moved to a friendly neighborhood. You have managed to find a hiding place where you use your time to paint. Although… Maybe this hiding place is not so secret, since it has attracted another artist like you.
Tumblr media
The green grass tickled your feet, you breathed calmly, your thoughts beyond on this spring afternoon. Your sketchbook being used for your creative mind once again. Despite the beautiful view you had, you were sitting on the ground, drawing with your trusty pencil. The shade of the tree was refreshing beside you. You slid your old pencil across your notebook, making doodles and shapes that to others would be described as abstract. But you were not ready to finish, as you imagined and then created.
This was your daily routine. Since you moved to a friendly neighborhood to have more time for yourself and take it easy. Your clothes were basic, in shades of beige, brown, white. And your old slippers, which were by your side now. Your legs were bent to support your notebook on them, your back, oddly enough, was not hurting at the moment. Since you were bent over.
This little piece of tranquility was your space of peace. You always visit this place when you need to clear your mind, a moment of serenity, or just rest and spend time doing something you like, like now. Some of your neighbors were… Very intense, very fond of doing energetic things. You unfortunately can't keep up with their pace, but fortunately, they are so kind that they decide to change the pace for you when you are there. None of them know much about you, since you are a person who takes things slowly. So you still don't know some of your neighbors in the neighborhood. But you were excited to meet them. You wouldn't say you were a shy person. You speak your mind when the moment is right. But you don't feel the need to talk sometimes. Just a nod of the head is enough of a message. It's hard for you to get angry about something, even if you're in a pressure situation, you still keep calm and think hard. And sometimes you think too much. Maybe you daydream sometimes, but that's why you paint, why you draw. You put everything you have in mind into painting form. A creative mind needs a specific space in art. Be it painting, writing, singing, playing. You take another deep breath as you remember reality, and then you breathe out contentedly, looking at your doodles around the yellowed paper. Feeling the breeze blowing through your still body. And then. You felt something. You felt something intense, maybe even entrancing. It was as if someone was watching you. And then you raised your head. Already knowing this feeling. You looked at the landscape in front of you and then a smile formed on your face, words came out of your mouth. "Ah, you found my hiding place." You heard light footsteps on the grass and then heard someone's voice answer you after seconds. A monotone voice. "That's good, because I was looking for you."
You raised your eyebrows and looked to the side, noticing the presence of Wally himself in person. You had heard about him in the neighborhood, it wasn't hard not to hear about the famous Wally Darling. Neighborhood friend, caring and talented. Helpful and polite. You had seen him before in the neighborhood, but since it was only a short time since you showed up, you couldn't even introduce yourself to him. Wally was holding two blank canvases under his arms, a paint palette in one hand with some saturated tones of paint, and some brushes. Well, he seemed to have a goal in mind. You looked at the puppet that had been staring at you for a while. "You-You were?" You asked quite curious. Wally hummed and continued. "Of course. Well, anyone would also be curious to find a new person who also has the same likings as you." He said with his eyes half-lidded, a calm smile on his face. The puppet pulled out a small easel and began to organize his things, then stopped what he was doing and looked at you, signaling to the floor next to you. You looked at him and smiled, suggesting that he could sit there. He soon continued his preparations. "It's a nice place, you have good taste in finding a place like this." You hummed looking forward, feeling the eyes of your new companion watching you. You chuckled lightly and sighed deeply, setting your notebook aside. "Well, anywhere is good, as long as it's outdoors." You stretched your legs and listened to the puppet next to you laugh monotonously. He wasn't ordinary in the slightest. "I prefer to be outdoors, too. You have a lot more options for painting." You nodded your head lightly and soon saw out of the corner of your eye Wally reach out to you something. You turned your head and saw a blank canvas being offered to you. You looked into the eyes of the puppet who explained. "I supposed we could paint together. It would be an ideal way to get to know each other, wouldn't it?" You looked deep into Wally's eyes, and sensed no lie in his words. He genuinely wanted to paint with you. Not just for the conversation, but for the companionship. You took the canvas. You smiled lightly at the man.
"But forgive me, I don't have another easel." The puppet left the items between the two of you, a brush for each, the paints for both of you, but only he had the stand for the canvas. You huffed lightly and smiled a crooked smile. "Don't worry." You quickly brought your legs together to your torso and placed the blank canvas resting on your legs. "I prefer it this way." You watched as Wally finally took his eyes off you and analyzed your posture, which was not the best. While his was quite straight. "If it's comfortable for you, then by all means, continue." You smiled with your eyes closed, liking that he simply accepted that. You turned sideways and observed the items your companion brought, the paints seemed to be just like yours that you usually use, though the pigments were stronger and more colorful. You picked up a brush and looked at it. It was clean, the white bristles unused. While Wally's brush was more worn by time. "So, what do you think we shall paint?" Wally began and you looked at him curiously, he took his eyes off you and pointed to the clearing just below you, aiming at a colorful spring tree. "How about that tree, if you prefer." He finished his sentence by looking at you. Yet you just frowned slightly, clearly something you didn't agree with. "Oh… Uh, I thought we were going to paint whatever our hearts told us." You said this without thinking, and when you saw Wally's expression form to a slightly confused one, you tried to form another better sentence explaining what you really like to paint. "Uh, sorry, it's just that I don't like to imitate reality, you know? I prefer to travel deep into my mind," You began to explain your point of view of your own art. "To understand what I feel, or like to feel. Close my eyes and just let the brush flow." You moved the brush as you said this. When you can organize your thoughts, it's as if you just understand yourself or make others understand you. And when you looked to the side, you saw the puppet's eyes on you. As if you had said something that made him look at you like that. Intense. An intense one of wonder. An intense of admiration. You looked at him for a few seconds and noticed the silence. Quickly breaking eye contact you widened your eyes and smiled awkwardly. "Or we could paint the tree too, no problem." "Gee, wow…" You listened beside you, you looked at Wally again and noticed him with a big smile on his face. "I've never seen that kind of perspective before. You have a quite marvelous point of view." You looked at him, not letting your smile grow hidden. Well, the comments of the others that he was a charmer were no lie. He really was good with words.
"Well, it's all done then." Wally clasped his own hands and cheerfully remarked. "Let's draw the non-existent." You couldn't hold back and laughed under your breath as you heard your companion's phrase. Wally kept a silly smile on his face. You shook your head about this particular situation. You looked at Wally and just continued. "Let's paint something we desire. It's easy, since there are several ways to do that." You opined and the man next to you nodded liking the idea. And then the session began. The two of you quietly began to make different drawings. Some sharp doodles and some softer ones. The two of you were in a comfortable silence until Wally broke it with a hum. You hummed back and watched the puppet next to you stop painting. "Is there a problem?" You asked looking at Wally, who turned his head sideways, and then to the other, and said with a hand under his chin. "It doesn't feel right." He said watching every detail of his drawing, making you look at him. "You don't have anything in mind, do you?" "A lot, actually, I don't know what to choose." Wally answered honestly, he observed his surroundings before looking at you, who gave your opinion. "Try to focus on what catches your interest for being different. By giving you a different feeling. Even if it's just a little." Wally watched you for a long period of time as you smiled trying to help him. The puppet soon had an idea and quickly grabbed the easel and pulled it a little to the side, making it out of your sight. You looked at him in wonder and turned your head slightly to the side. Seeing what the man was doing. "I have an idea. But no peeking." Wally said with his posture a little more confident. You smiled crookedly, happy to see the puppet thinking of what to do.
"Okay, I won't look." You confirmed by continuing with your smile. After this interaction, the two of you entered a comforting silence. With only the natural sounds around you, the leaves on the trees moved with the calm breeze. The birds sang and communicated. And then you stopped painting to listen to your surroundings, closing your eyes and listening to your breathing. You looked for another familiar sound but couldn't find it. When you opened your eyes, you found Wally watching you. You watched him for a few seconds and then broke eye contact, laughing lightly. "Sometimes I like to close my eyes and listen to things. Sorry if that was weird." You heard no response but saw out of the corner of your eye Wally duck his head to look into your eyes. Which worked, since you lifted your head to see him. "Ah. It's not weird at all. Allow me to tell you something I like to do too." Wally kept looking at you until you turned your head slightly to the side, curious. Wally half-lidded his eyes, as he watched you. "I do enjoy eye contact. It's not something common, some people even find it strange. So I understand if you don't like it." The puppet said calmly, not doubting his words one bit. You watched him, your eyebrows rising. Oh now that makes sense. "It's cute." You said without thinking and quickly widened your eyes and laughed embarrassed, but you didn't correct yourself, you just laughed at yourself for saying it out loud. The man next to you laughed along, but at his own monotonous pace. "Well," You began, coughing lightly to continue, you placed your hand on your chest, breathing calmly. "If we're sharing weirdness." You signaled with your hands in quotation marks when you mentioned weirdness. "Then I'll explain why I like to just listen to my surroundings." You closed your eyes and then listened to your deep breathing, continuing. "I like to listen to breathing. It's weird that phrase itself, but…" You tried once more to listen to the breathing of anyone else besides yourself there, but it was difficult. "It's nice to think about, though. You breathing brings life to you. It makes your heart beat." You opened your eyes and watched the puppet in front of you continue to stare at you. "I must admit, it is a beautiful thought." Wally's eyes were still half-lidded as he watched you, you chuckled under your breath and continued. "Maybe. And I don't say that to just anyone." You raised your hand and explained. "I only said it because you also share something in common with me." You joked in an orderly tone and the puppet next to you smiled broadly. Entering into the joke "I am flattered." Wally placed a hand in front of his chest. You laughed lightly and then lifted your brush and continued to paint, your mood lifted. "Let that be a little secret between you... and me." Wally added low after he started painting again. You listened, you just didn't comment. Letting your brush do its work again.
A cool breeze passed by you, you could notice that your painting partner was using a lot of neutral colors, which you found interesting, since you were using the most saturated colors. Despite having only one paint pallet, you were able to use it together. Letting the silence and concentration flow in the air. Comfortably, you sighed and looked at your work after a few hours had passed, almost finished. You and Wally talked at times, joking, getting to know each other, and even giving different opinions in some cases. Until he asked you what made you move into the neighborhood. "Well," you began, putting your paintbrush aside, satisfied with your painting. "Where I lived there were a lot of… materialistic opinions. I like living experiences, and being present to an organic place, like this," You signaled behind you, where the neighborhood was. "It makes me feel more comfortable and accepted." The puppet next to you hummed, understanding you. You looked at Wally after he had finished his painting and saw that he had put his brush down, also looking like he was finished. "You are very experienced in what you talk about. I am happy to know that you are a neighbor now." Wally watched you with that same look in his eyes. You smiled contentedly. "Well, I take it we've finished the paintings." You soon cut the silence, watching as Wally's expression changed from one of contentment to one of realization. He looked down at his own painting and nodded. You got down on your knees and sat on your legs, painting in hand. "What do you think?" You showed your still fresh painting to the puppet who took his eyes off you and observed your painting. After a few moments of silence, Wally raised his hands and looked at you, and you understood, giving him the painting to look at more closely. You had talent, that was for sure. The puppet observed every aspect of your painting. He could see what elements you wanted to show in this painting. He could see that some of the flaws there were on purpose. You had a very specific and beautiful trace to look at. Wally quickly took his eyes off the painting when he heard you laugh lightly. "Hah, you know what? You can keep it. As a gift from me to you, neighbor." Wally understood your comment, for he said nothing, just stared at the painting with a facination that made you smile silly. Wally noticed your action and not wanting to be left out, he signaled to the brush in your hands. "Oh well, keep that, then. As a thank you gift, from one neighbor to another." Wally watched your smile become more genuinely grateful. You were very pretty like that.
"Do you want to show your work or are you going to be mysterious?" You joked and watched your companion place his newest gift on the floor next to him. Wally removed his painting from the easel and turned to you. Seeing that the puppet was offering you the painting to look at. You took it, and when you looked closely you noticed something... Interesting.
You don't know if interesting was the right word. Since Wally's painting was a mixture of some very intense concepts. You could notice that the painting on top was in more neutral colors like beige, browns and whites. It was something softer, serene, beautiful.
You found the overpainting very peaceful. But you could notice what the original painting looked like underneath these soothing tones. Spirals. In strong shades of black with reds. It was… very… Specific. However, he changed later and made this art soothing and fragile.
You looked at the puppet who was very expectant, you smiled with droopy eyes, and honestly you encouraged him that it was beautiful and very original. His signature for this style was very distinctive. You liked it.
Returning the painting to its owner, you noticed the sky on the horizon, and how late it was getting. "Oh, time has passed quickly, I wasn't expecting that." You commented holding your new brush firmly. Wally looked at the horizon and you got up from the ground. Picking up your slippers in hand. You looked at Wally who stood up as well. Remarkable height was made between the two of you.
"Well, it was nice to get to know you better, Wally Darling." You extended your hand to the puppet next to you. The nominee nodded in agreement and shook your hand. "I say the same to you, (Name)."
You smiled pleased and asked the man if he would go along, offering to help carry the equipment. Wally denied this and said that he would be staying a while longer. You then bid him goodbye once more and began to walk down the small slope where you were standing. Walking barefoot in the cool grass.
The puppet looked at you from afar, watching your figure disappear after a few minutes. Wally turned back and watched the beautiful view for a few seconds. He began to whistle, organizing his things so that he would be ready to leave later. Not forgetting to take your sketchbook and your pencil.
You were a bit forgetful. This was rather amusing for him.
-OW OKAY OKAY, WHY DID I FOUND THIS ADORABLE? bruhh, i think i'm getting way too soft for this-

.. until the refining stage where you gotta rotisserie chicken the pen to try to get the color you need hhr BUT ITS STILL FUN
I usually stick to analogous color palettes without meaning to, so this random blend of colors are so refreshing to play with and then further test myself to refine the sketches 💪💪

JUST HAD A REALISATION(S)
1 no wonder catra and angel dust are both that relatable, that song works on both:
Angel dust with Val
Catra with SW
2 funny how this is done on mother s day knowing catra s lore
So for everyone struggling today, please know you deserve love, you re not alone and its valid❤️‍🩹🫂
3 it was soo interesting to work on hazbin hotel style, you know i like sharp linessss🤗🥹🤝🤭 but the proportion here were so new to work on💖💖
4 that the advantage of just shading with black. I can change colors underneath
5 that was totally unplanned and... wow it s actually so refreshing to draw for myself for once. Not for a last minute event. Not for someone. No due date. No expectation. Just a silly idea i wanted to try.
I know I have urgent wips (spop big bang event✨️✨️ etcc) and important hw but having cool "chillax" doodles in between helps, especially when i m blocked on the others.
At least i feel i m doing/drawing something.
Ig thats why i have sm wips all together, when i art block on one, i can still progress on another and feel productive.
If one s lineart feels too hard, there s one waiting for coloring i can do.
Oh and ofc what is rendering anwwwwww
Just what i said, it feels good to just color without overthinking shadowing for once.
And⁴⁵⁶⁷ what are backgrounds anwww?? Why was it hard finding a pic from the show with no one sitting on that throne when i know such pics exist (pls if u found them, pls send me) like i vividly remember shera s creator posimg next to it but i cant find THAT pic
And ofc, ofc i notice only now i forgot catra s catail and cat ears😭😭🤡
Btw there s 2 cause there s one i was coloring from my head without checking catra s real color palette
Ohh live, laugh, love long description✨️✨️✨️one post, sm subjects🫶✨️🤝

You got any adivce for someone who's considering dropping drawing completely since they don't like what they're making at all?
honestly i've been in the same struggle recently bc it just hasn't been a good year for me. i haven't been drawing a lot bc most of the time i'm either sick or i just.. can't. I've been picking myself up as of late and it's a really difficult grind, but honestly the fact i've been able to actually start this grind is already good for now. I guess that counts as advice; be patient with yourself. Self-esteem doesn't come easy and the little steps are worth so much more than you think.
ok so uh,
-if you just started, don't think about it too much. we all start with the weird scribbles. if you stop now you might never get back to it -if you've been trying to doodle often and always end up hating the result, just take a break. art block is seasoning for burnout and you might just be tired. a lot of times i've felt bad about my art i kinda "gave up" for a while and when i came back to it it was like "wtf this easy what was my issue (it was burnout)". so take a break, play some videogames or hang out with your friends for a week. idk write essays about the media you like? it feels like you're being unproductive but resting IS part of productive because just pushing yourself will just result in nothing being done at the end of the day. -look at your favorite work! im not quite out of my latest artblock yet because its a tough one(it's been teaming up with depression caused by health problems it suuuuucks :/), but when i went long enough without being able to draw I kinda started feeling like I can't do shit and can't call myself an illustrator at all specially bc what i do isnt that big of a deal compared to others(<- comparison also big mistake remember youre the only one who can make YOUR art), going through my folders and seeing the stuff I like the most gave me a LOT of motivation to keep going, even if I was still unable to start drawing right away. not giving up is so important. -so yeah love your art. focus on drawing things you like because it's a gift from you to you, and you should treat it as such. i know it's really hard to be positive about it all the time but it can be really good to go through all your artwork at the end of a day and look at the things you like about it, even if it isn't much. -on that note, find something you really like drawing!!! back in high school i had massive periods of depression that kept me from drawing but i occasionally found sort of a 'life hack' for myself which were things i was always able to work with even during the worst times. one of them was just.. bees. i just doodled random characters as these bees and made og designs too and it was fun. the other one was using colored pencils instead of a regular one bc i just like colors and it made me happy :] it didnt matter that they always had the same overall shape or if i couldnt erase when i messed up, i was just feeling good being able to draw something that i liked. -experiment more!! expand your palettes and download some new brushes. i even change from my newest to my old busted tablet that still sorta works occasionally because using a tool that feels different is.. refreshing somehow? idk -when you need to get yourself back up, do the little steps at your own pace. do a little doodle every day. it's okay if it's always the same thing. the same character. the exact same idea. it's okay if it sucks or if it's unfinished because you struggled. Just give it little pushes. What matters is to try. and it's okay if you can't do it every day. maybe every other day if you need a slower pace. -and remember. engagement doesn't measure your skill. art is subjective anyways!!!!! i spent YEARS doodling and posting only my ocs and getting little to no notes. i think one of my favorite artworks from the time i had ~100 followers had like 0 notes for the longest time. to be honest i don't even know if it has any likes at all nowadays i'd have to look it up bc it's a bit buried

Art-Block Advice
Having a chill day drawing after recently getting out of a major art block and thought I’d share some tips and tricks that I used to help me get out of it
Experiment freely
Spend an hour a day just experimenting and having fun with it. It can be anything from doodling, mark making, playing around with paints and inks or making some rough sketches. This way you're re-associating art with positivity and testing out ideas to help with future work.
Try to recreate some of your older work
Your skills are constantly evolving so recreating one of your older pieces and comparing the two can really help with confidence, as you can see where you were and where you are now with physical evidence. Also, it’s very common for artists to fall into the trap of “my work was better X amount of time ago” but this isn’t true, it was different back then and that was probably a point in your life where you noticed your skills drastically improved instead of slowly improving, so this is a good exercise for getting out of that mindset.
Analyse your older work
If you still think your work looked better in the past, then go back and analyse it. Was there something you did back then that you're not doing right now? If there is then great! You’ve found the problem.
Art prompt lists
If you’re really stuck about what to draw, look into current or older art challenges and work your way through the list. You’ll be researching and drawing a lot of different subject matter or using ideas you hadn’t used before, so it will give you a kick start as well as expanding the range of your work and developing your skills.
Online tools
There’s a ton of tools out there like figures to help with reference drawings for poses. Colour palette generators, spin the wheel where people can continue to add onto it giving more and more prompts. There’s even youtube and twitch to help with tutorials and other suggestions for overcoming art block.
Change your media
Have you been using pens non-stop for a solid year? Maybe switch it up to using paints. Changing your media can present yourself with new challenges and give yourself a break from using the same tools over and over again, so you can return to them feeling more refreshed. I usually rotate between drawing, painting and digital art to keep myself engaged and interested in my work.
Observational drawings & Requests
Sometimes just drawing your desk, a cup or some fruit really can help. It takes your mind off of creating ideas and just drawing what’s in front of you. Taking requests also helps because it helps motivate you and your creativity because you’re making something for someone else.
Just do it
Sounds cliche but it really does work. Sometimes we get stuck in our own heads too much and that causes stress, anxiety and setting impossible expectations for ourselves. Just make something, don’t think about it, just do your best. Do this at least once a day and you’ll train yourself to get back into the habit of creating.
Hope this helps, if anyone has any other advice for what worked for you, feel free to add onto this 😊

So Viv finally drew something new! It’s a doodle of fizz, and I was wondering what are your thoughts on it, (if the anatomy is correct) and if you think Viv has improved on her art skills.
https://twitter.com/vivziepop/status/1522658775211020288?s=21&t=A7qa8YszN1_Dq7Cv2Pm8aw
Tumblr media
Aw, cute! I will say Viv's color choices are way less saturated (and thus easier on the eyes) than they've been in the past, and the lack of overused patterns is refreshing to say the least. At this point it’s hard to believe she’s the same person who gave us stuff like this:
Tumblr media
I guess the need to streamline your character designs is an easier pill to swallow when you realize someone has to animate them (which I hope affects Husk’s design in Hazbin Hotel).
However, this drawing could use work in a few aspects, mainly balance, tangents, and arm proportions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something else Viv’s kind of infamous for is using multiple hues of pink in one design, making it look unbalanced and overwhelming. To remedy that in Fizz’s case, I chose one hue as a base and altered the others to match it. These colors have the same values and saturation as they did in the original, but they now fall under one color space rather than multiple random ones. The effects are subtle, but they’ll make a big difference in how all the hues work together.
Tumblr media
That doesn’t solve the problem of the rainbow pants, though. If you drew a horizontal line to cut Fizz in half, and showed someone the top and bottom halves individually, they’d likely have no idea they belonged to the same character. Because the rainbow colors aren’t present in the top half of the design, there’s no cohesion, no unity. It’s almost like Viv stitched together a torso and legs a la Dr. Frankenstein. So I made an executive decision and repainted the pink stripes of his hat to match the pants.
Tumblr media
Now we’re cookin’ with gas, though it still feels like there’s an excess of hues here. That’s not to say you should never use rainbows in your art, but if they take up such a huge portion of a character, it’s a lot to absorb. Looks like Viv was going for a generally warmer palette consisting mainly of reds, oranges, and yellows, so the cool colors seem a tad superfluous. Let’s try a palette composed only of warm hues.
Tumblr media
Givin’ off a neat ‘70s vibe if you ask me, and these are just a couple solutions to the cohesion issue.
Of course, when it comes to animation, you’ll want to use the same character palette every time for the sake of consistency. But there’s no rule that says you can’t play with the colors in an illustration like this. Fizz is still recognizable despite his deviation from the OG palette, kinda like a shiny Pokemon. If your audience can’t pick out your character in a lineup just because of some superficial changes, you’re in trouble, chief.
Long story short: Yes, Viv has definitely improved, but could do a lot more. As could I. As could any professional artist. Remember, just because you’re out of school, that doesn’t mean you stop learning.

Final Project: Personal Branding
For my final project, I have decided to work on option 1, branding for myself. Let’s start exploring how my brand guide has come into fruition!
(For HD quality of brand guide: view here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1XwwOiQDTosKOCg8jYsEWof2GG7gWCO-C?usp=sharing)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beginning with the conception of my branding — I had the vision of creating a brand guide that is stylish, unique and personable. It should be reflective of how I wish to portray myself, or rather, who I am as a person, based on the three adjectives that I can closely identify with: easygoing, passionate and calm. What came into mind, firstly, was the colour palette. As I am extremely fond of bright, pastel and bold colours, I have chosen to go with a colour palette that is refreshing to the eyes and evokes a sense of liveliness and youthfulness.
Tumblr media
Based on the feedback received in the past few weeks, many have expressed that the chosen colour scheme complements the personality of the brand guide, which is a huge delight to hear! While experimenting with the primary colour palette of Watusi, Dark Cerulean and Bon Jour, I figured that it would be more versatile to throw in more shades of brighter colours to liven up my brand guide. Thus, I have picked Middle Red, reminiscent of salmon pink and a shade of mustard yellow, named Honey. The primary colour palette will be used as the foundation and base of my resume, logo and name card, whereas Middle Red and Honey will be utilised to give my collaterals some vigour.
Tumblr media
I have always wanted to experiment with a doodle concept for logos and therefore I decided to hand-draw it and subsequently, vectorise it using Illustrator. The logo is a sketch of myself, in cartoon form! There are several details that I have added to the logo along the way, the most significant feature (and one which I am most proud of) being the “cup handle”, or rather, the ears of my face. As I am a huge fan of coffee and have been a barista for over a year, coffee is basically inseparable from my identity. As some of my classmates have pointed out that it is not very obvious at first glance, I’ve painted the cup handle yellow to make it stand out, while remaining subtle at the same time. Another feature worth mentioning would be the blushing characteristic (two pink circles on my cheek) — no special reason behind it, I just thought it was cute and it fits my personality!
Tumblr media
As for the choice of typeface, I have chosen Faune and Agrandir as the main typefaces to work with for the brand guide. I particularly like the look of Faune, as the cursive ends of the letter evokes a sense of quirkiness. After the last round of feedback, I have included some instructions in my typography guideline. Faune should be mainly used for headers and sub-header, whereas Agrandir is versatile enough to be utilised as body text and header (for the logo, see name card). The reason why Agrandir (Wide Black Italic) is not recommended to be used as a header font for the rest of the collaterals is because it is very jarring, bold and distracting — thus, it should only stay with the name card. Same with YoungSerif, it should only be used for the main text for the name card given its uniqueness and the quality for it to stand out prominently from the rest of the texts in Faune.
Tumblr media
With an art gallery ticket concept chosen for my name card, I have incorporated a bar code at the back of it. This design choice is motivated by my love for the arts and specifically museums, with the intention of drawing in “visitors” to connect with me and have a cup of coffee. The “ADMISSION FOR ONE ONLY” feature is reminiscent of tickets that require you to fold and tear along the dotted lines upon admission.
Tumblr media
I have the utmost fun doing up my resume — it has always been a design aspiration for me to try out the “windows webpage” aesthetics as it has been a trendy style amongst illustrators. With the webpage frame as one of the main style characteristic for my resume, it segments my resume in an orderly fashion while giving it a sense of playfulness or as Amelia has mentioned, “tech-savviness”. It is heartening to know that the intended message is conveyed through my design. Based on the feedback given by Lydia, I have swapped the positions of my introduction (”Hello there!” box) with the skillset segment (”Skills”), as it captures the attention of the viewer directly such that they can know me better. Amelia has also mentioned that the logo should be the most visually striking feature in the resume, thus it would be better to reduce the font size of the “2000!”.
Overall, it has been extremely rewarding and fun experimenting with the different features of Adobe Software, enabling me to map out my vision of branding myself as a creative company. Thank you for tuning in! :)

Ah ok so unpopular opinion i guess since I've noticed many Spongebob fans enjoy seasons 11-12, the most recent ones: I honestly think they're worse than seasons 6-8. Seasons 6-8 were at least bearable and somewhat entertaining, but the flanderization and exaggeration have become so awful in the past couple of years. Seasons 9-10 were headed in the right direction but shit went so downhill in 2018😔
You're coming for me personally my guy😭 its okay though, its fun💖
Yeah I'm personally one of those who think seasons 10-12 were great and wasn't a huge fan of seasons 6-9a.
Of course its a pretty subjective topic and that doesn't mean I'm right and you have your reasons why you feel the opposite.
Buuuut I will explain why I feel like this just for fun.
Idk?? The newer episodes are just fun and goofy in their own way. Its not like classic spongebob or really any Spongebob but still felt like our little yellow boy. It felt different and kind of out of the box if I can explain it right? It was refreshing.
I remember my interest in Spongebob began to resurface around 2014 when cartoon reviewers were critiquing Spongebob and it was a popular thing to drag anything past season 4. I don't remember how I found it but it strangely was able to sum up why I felt uncomfortable by Spongebob and why I stopped watching the show when I was 11. I didn't agree that everything past season 4 was garbage but some of the points hit home.
I spent some time rewatching episodes online and figuring out about the show and why I liked it and what I didn't like about it. I could pin point the time of Spongebob I felt was starting to get that weird off beat vibe I was getting around the time when I stopped watching the show which was around season 6. Not all of season 6 was bad but it was when I could strongly identify it was uncomfortable.
The weird change in color palette change (tbh the color palette in this show changes every season) but here it was just bright and hard to watch (and I have an eye condition which made it harder to stand bright colors and lights when i was younger but here was just harder) the episodes didn't have much of a direction, they felt really slow, background characters were very grotesque (season 7 is where this peaked), the story was frustrating to watch since its often dragged out, squidward torture porn, the character's personalities were all unlikable to me. It just didn't feel right. It felt eerie or blank at most.
Soon the spongebob movie 2 comes around and I was a depressed angsty teeeen and that movie was a huge pick me up and made me feel so happy and I started to keep up with the show again.
The show picked up season 9b and season 10. Season 9b was pretty fun to watch and I enjoyed it. It wasn't hard to watch like season 9a or season 8.
Then there was season 10 which was completely different. I think lost in bikini bottom was my first season 10 episode but it was just different. Spongebob's design was more stretchy, his voice sounded slightly different, the colors are too bright still but tolerable.
There was more episodes like Mermaid pants that I absolutely love!! It felt similar to a classic episode because of Squidward joining in on the fun with spongebob, playing along as a mermaid man villain known as Dr. Negative.
Not all of season 10 is perfect. Its some hits and misses but I liked the new tone and vibe of the show and it got carried on to season 11. I just liked this goofy new sponge. His design is so stretchy and fun!
I remember season 7 and his cardboard box design. His arms drawn so high and he'd barely move besides talking unless it was plankton stealing the formula type gag.
I do agree though that seasons 11 and 12 exaggerate it too much but I'd rather have that then no movement at all. Though I do think season 1 was probably the best example of how spongebob's stretchinees and mobility was drawn. I feel like that should be the blueprint.
The show also picked up pace and I felt like it was going somewhere. I admit now it can be a little too fast paced to the point of disorienting at times.
I also feel like at times its more consistent? With the characters. Not all the time but the idea that Spongebob can be a perfectionist and Squidward can be selfish and arrogant and is meant to get karma in the end, not a cruel punishment from the universe for existing.
Its still a hit and miss. Some episodes can suuuuck in these seasons but for the ones that I liked, I'm accepting of it. There are some episodes that ignore all I've said above.
The problems I do have with these episodes aside from bright colors and being too wild to keep up on is the ableism. That's the biggest problem. It comes up once in a while even with pre spongebob movie 2 episodes but its jarring to watch.
There are also a problem with recycled plots. Spongebob in randomland is rock bottom and pizza delivery smooshed together. Its actually lost in bikini bottom. It rips off other episodes.
I know the show has been on so long so its bound to repeat itself but its kind of shameless?
I feel like I'm just rambling here since I'm typing this out on my phone at 3am. Its hard to explain that I just find seasons 10-12 spongebob adorable and fun to watch. Its strangely comforting, when I feel down I just get the feeling to watch it again. There are references to classic episodes that feel like a treat to notice. Sometimes I feel like they're milking off the legacy of them though. Like doodle dimension was my least favorite. I could ramble on and on about it.
But I should mention seasons 6-9a since I've been dragging on it. I stopped watching the show roughly around season 8ish? The episode listings are messed uuuuup from what I remember. But anyways these episodes always had the most fun concepts? Some episodes did feel boring at times like only taking place at the Krusty krab but when they weren't, they had genuinely great ideas! Some I feel weren't executed as greatly as they could but it was a fun thing to try to rewrite the episode's idea and that lead to this blog being created since I had so much ideas and stuff about it. I don't have my notes anymore. I think I have one about rewriting the Stanley Squarepants episode somewhere if you'd like to hear it then I could dig it out.
Also while writing this I remembered something! Why I got back into spongebob! It was a song from the episode "spongebob's last stand" there was a song that popped into my head, the jellyfishing song. Its funny to remember since that's one of my favorite episodes from that middle era seasons 6-9a.
It was a good episode with a strong environmental message that managed to piss off Republicans! For me I just thought it was cute and that jellyfishing song is too catchy. I remember seeing a YouTube video where some fans meets the voice actors and they sing that song for them. If I met them then I'd like to ask that too!
Sorry about this rambling! It was fun to talk about this stuff~ it just let to a rabbit hole of thoughts. I hope its not too hard to read💜

SKETCHY BEHAVIORS | INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTIE SHINN
With the sharp-edged graphic feel, high contrast color palette, and a modern twist on traditional Hawaiiana, artist Christie Shinn’s paintings offer a fresh interpretation to life in Hawaii. Her beautiful works have not only appeared as a Vans shoe design, but also as the artwork for the Vans 2013 Triple Crown of Surfing event. Not only one thing, Christie is also the art director and collaborating artist at Surfer Towel, where her two towel designs will be released this summer.  Find out more about Christie’s artwork, inspiration, and favorite collaboration by taking the leap below!

Introduce yourself?   My name is Christie Shinn. I’m a resident of the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.  I’m Canadian but I’ve called Hawaii home for over a decade.
What kind of work do you create? What medium and what would you say it is about?  I work in acrylic paint on canvas, wood, leather.. really, anything the paint will stick to.
I’d say the style of work is a modern version of traditional Hawaiiana (Hawaii-inspired art/craft).
I taught myself to paint, and my favorite art at the time was early skate graphics and silkscreened concert posters so I think there is a sharp-edged graphic feel to my work because of that.  I like to go high contrast with color and pick subjects that are a little off-typical.  I live in a place that is so familiar to people all over the world, even if they’ve never been here.  I feel like it’s my job to find a fresh interpretation of life in Hawaii.
How did you start from doodling and drawing to what you do now? Where did your love of drawing and creating stem from?  My grandma taught me how to paint when I was a kid.  I remember being fascinated with making marks on a canvas. It starts off blank, then it’s something and each choice is totally up to you.  Some are good choices, some aren’t, but they’re all yours.  I still love that about making art.  I get to sit at my easel and create a thing that did’t exist before I thought of it.  So cool.
Who and what were some of your early artistic influences?  My favourite artist as a kid was Henri Rousseau who created massive tropical themed paintings, even though he’d never been outside of France. He created an entire lifetime of artwork exploring his tropical fantasy world.  His work is so weird and wonderful.
When I started getting serious about art, my absolute favourite artist was (and still is) Andrew Pommier.  I love his characters, I love his style.  I feel like I can look into the eyes of one of his characters and see an entire backstory.  One of his pieces is on my studio wall for both inspiration and as a barometer for my own work. Even though we have different styles, I try to make sure each new piece that leaves the studio is worthy to be hung next to the Pommier.
What are some things that inspire the drawings you make now? What are some of your favorite things to draw? What about them makes them something you just find yourself re-creating or re-capturing over and over again?  I’ve spent a lot of years living on the North Shore of Oahu and about 4 years ago I met my boyfriend who lives on the South Shore. His place is an hour drive , and it’s like a whole new island visually.  The colors are different, the ocean is different, the sunsets…everything is new and fresh.  I think a lot of my work over the past 4 years has been inspired by the contrast between the two shores.
Take us through your artistic process? What’s a typical day in the studio like? I wake up at 7:30am, get some cuddle time with the cat, make coffee and wait for my assistant to come over.  He packs orders while I paint. Usually a friend drops by at some point because I live on a property with several houses and my neighbours are all friends.  If it’s a surf day, we break for a surf.  The afternoon is a mix of planning out new pieces, answering emails, prepping orders and generally taking care of the business side of art.  I’ll do an evening beach run if I’m feeling energetic.  Watch the sunset.  Usually with a beer.  After dinner, I’m back at the easel until about midnight.  Nighttime is my favourite time to paint because there are no distractions.
I always take weekends off to maintain the work/life balance.  It can get obsessive, especially when I’m struggling with a piece.  Mandatory time off helps me reset.
What art tools will we always find in your creative space? Is there a medium you want to try that you have yet to get your hands on?  I keep it pretty minimal when it comes to materials.  I have one large brush for lay in, 3  flats and 2 liner brushes.  I always have several blank canvases hanging at all times.  Since inspiration is hard to control, I think the key is to be ready for when it strikes.
I’ve always been fascinated with screen printing.  I’d love to dabble in that one day.
What’s been one of your more rewarding collaborations or projects? What about it was so rewarding? What would your dream collaboration be?  I first worked with Vans in 2013 as the poster artist for their Triple Crown of Surfing event here on the North Shore.  I did a bonus design that they turned into a limited edition capsule collection. It was on button up shirts, bags, hats, towels.. I didn’t know any of this until I opened up the box of samples. It was so unexpected, I actually teared up a little. What a crazy feeling to see your art on a Vans product.  That moment really made a lasting impact.  After that, I started to really believe it was possible to have a career doing something I was good at and that I loved.  I owe a huge debt to the Vans design team of ’13.
A few years later I got to collaborate with Vans again on a shoe design for the Japan market.  It was my favourite collaboration to date because they let me customize everything: the shoe, the insole, the box and even the tissue paper!
A few months later I’m in Tokyo doing a signing event next to a wall of my shoes.  It was surreal.
I think my dream collaboration would be collaboration shoe for Vans USA. I love to hand-paint Vans and I have a couple favourites from the hand painted series I’d love to see as a production shoe.  Also, the Japan sizes were so small I never got a pair I could actually wear myself!
What do you do when you’re not drawing or working on projects?  When I have a lot of down time, I love to travel. Japan is my favourite destination right now.  When I have a little space in the day, I’ll log some hammock time, go for a surf, run, take photos…not in that order.
What’s the art community like where you are? What kind of avenues are there for artists in your area or is it more of a DIY type of thing?  Hawaii is a great place for artists.  We have a lot of galleries, local shops and businesses that feature the work of local artists.  There are so many interesting opportunities outside the gallery scene too. For example, some big hotels in Honolulu have been doing rebrands over the last few years and nearly every one has hired a local artist to help refresh their look.  There is also a lot of love for Hawaii in Japan which has lead to some really cool collaborations between local artists and Japanese companies.  It’s a really great place to be an artist because there is no one measure of success. There are so many ways to have an art career here.
What’s your art tip that you want to share with folks?  I try to keep the usual stuff in mind as I work: contrast, energy, balance.  If there is a lot of warmth, add a splash of cool. If you go high-detail, balance it with some negative space. Dark/light etc…
My favourite pieces are the ones that still have the energy of the first strokes when they’re finished.  Overworking is so easy to do.  I try to take breaks and walk away or put it away for a while. I usually have several pieces going at the same time for this reason.
What are your favorite style of VANS? My favourite Vans are Slip-Ons.  It’s customary to take your shoes off outside of homes and some offices in Hawaii. I take my shoes on and off a lot in a day so the slip-ons are the way to go.  Also, they have more surface area to paint on, so they get an extra point for that as well.
What do you have coming up that you can share or are super stoked about?  My newest collaboration is with Japanese airline ANA and LeSportsac.  I created a series of bag designs for LeSportasac that will be available exclusively on ANA flights.  I’m on my way to Japan in May for an art festival so I’ll actually get to see the bags on the flight.
I’m also pretty stoked on 2 new towel designs I have coming out this summer for Surfer Towel.
