(A tentative guess about your BuckTommy vs Buddie post)

I guess a big part of it is because it's canon ? It's canon and it seems to work, and it seems to be make Buck calm and fluffy and happy in a healthy way, which is what a lot (all ?) of us want. So we can get behind that, for now.

Your "why not a similar support behind his exes / fetishizing MM relationship" question is valid and i think the difference is because it's the first time someone Buck dates seems to really fit with him without having something that we can pre-shot is going to be a problem, and the first time he goes into a relationship (getting myself ahead of things there) without it being to heal something in him ? And as I've read other people point out, Tommy's not silo-ed out, he has a backstory with the Begins episodes, he is friends with some of the 118, so it makes him less of a plot device than Buck's female exes.

And about the second part, the fetishizing part, i think sadly it's just a real thing that happens here, on tumblr and in fandom spaces : men are seen enjoying being together and fandom smooches them together together. One could even argue that it's the same for Buddie, wanting them to be together together when canon just factually says they are BFFs. I don't think anyone is erasing anything, but all that is canon about Buddie is that they are BFFs (a lot can be read as more that friends but ultimately it's with shipping goggles on, only - i'm not a very optimistic person, though).

I guess some of us think that if they didn't make Buddie happen for this long, then it may be because it is meant to stay on the fandom shipping side ? And we're given this incredible chance to have a canon lgbt character with an unusual story of self-discovery that doesn't happen a lot in tv shows so we're just enthusiastic to go with the flow ?

And if it turns out that the writers have the guts to get Eddie his own self-discovery journey, and if that later leads to Buddie happening somehow, then I think all BuckTommy shippers will be glad that it finally happened, and that it is canon, and is finally the Truth.

damn, thanks for your insight! i do see how things being canon and properly canon (like Tommy having a "backstory") can cause shifts in perspectives looking into the future.

i 100% understand why some might think buddie is a form of fetishization too. ngl i've seen strong arguments like "why can't 2 male characters share a strong emotional bond platonically? why does it have to lead to romance?" i guess my main reason for bringing up fetishization with respect to bucktommy is the fact that they are quite lacking in the "strong emotional bond" department. so it feels pretty much like "2 hot guys kissing and touching each other hell yeah" to me.

but i realise i'm overlooking the fact that this is bi buck's first relationship, though. i forgot to consider the fact that majority of this support for tommy comes from the fact that this is the first love interest of buck's to whom he can give all of himself and get twice as much with all the freedom in the world AS A BI MAN. thank u for putting me on to the fact that i've been misinterpreting this enthusiasm to some degree.

thats not to say that just bc something is canon or just a headcanon everything is set in stone. writers and actors themselves have made it very clear time and time again that audience reactions and engagement matters when it comes to plot development. in your own line of thought, right until 7x 03 they didn't make bi Buck happen for so long. so would u say it was meant to stay merely on the fandom shipping side? i just think the possibilities are endless, and maybe we as a fandom can try to have a bit more resilience to see through fan-originated storylines instead of a "i'll just go with whatever is canon bc it's easier" ethic.

I'm going to go off about some random filler episode that's supposedly at least somewhat Deidara centric, because...????

Shippuden ep 457 "Partners"

Right off the bat. Deidara's voice is....so deep. I was a little surprised because I haven't properly heard it in so long

(my timestamps are broken so...it's not exact.)

3:03 his height difference with Pein is surprising... You'd never really notice how short he is unless you looked into it. Really, Deidara has quite the aura.

4:04 Although I LOVE his half up half down hairstyle, I also loved his low ponytail. Realistically, it doesn't make sense for him to just switch up his style like that, he coulda kept it for a little longer, you know?...but they don't really care, I'd think so. (but for the fact that we see him tying his hair up, which is pretty pretty, it's forgivable you know)

(Timestamp inexact) For a few seconds in the overhead frame where they overlook the sand disc, I notice that Deidara is now wearing his socks. This is set in the past, so Dei wore beige "khakis" and sandals instead of the classic dark desaturated blue pants with matching "ninja shoes" with those.... Socks that have a stripe going OVER the shoe. So in this shot, he's supposed to be wearing his old clothes. It's not like he could just go "Hey wait here Danna, I'm going to go change my pants." (Which is weird and out of character, I should also mention that he already calls Sasori "Danna" despite having met him just today, which means Sasori has done NOTHING to earn Deidara's respect just yet. The disgrace.)

Also, Why'd they send the new kid out for the important mission of "take down the rogue member of our group"? To be fair, Dei has spark. Power. And they know that, but...? Oh, gee. It's a filler episode...

Somewhere around 5:20 Deidara opened up his cloak to reach out for clay. There are so many errors in these few frames? First of all, his nails ARE NOT supposed to be painted black yet! Why, did they just stop along the road, halting their important mission to get his nails done? Ludicrous. My attention is pointed to his clay pouch since he was reaching for that, and the chain dangling between said pouch and the belt is missing. At least they remembered that he had only one pouch on his left side at the time. He still has the bottom half of his cute kimono jacket but... It's that dark, desaturated blue like his new outfit. And he has the crop top and mesh undershirt above the belt now so HUH????? They didn't forget his new, shiny ring but they did forget the consistency of his clothing and... It's just kinda sad. Feels bad for the animators.

I should also mention that within the frame, his front hair fwips and flows, exposing his other eye sometimes. Though there isn't anything drawn there, which is fine enough, but in the next few frames when he turned to look at Sasori to his right, Deidara SUDDENLY has his eye scope even though at that point, he was fresh in and probably didn't develop it yet. (Okay but I kinda found it endearing how enthusiastic he was to perform his art.)

Somewhere in 5:30 something, Deidara's face is a lil derpy which is cute

Orochimaru appears. Knows Deidara immediately, calls him a kid which Deidara's opposes to. Look...orochi is like... A grandpa compared to him, so, that's fair enough to say, isn't it?

Sasori sent Deidara to go lookout, which Deidara looked annoyed about. Sasori said that Deidara, unless he had any grudges, wouldn't have any reason to fight the snake man. Which, fair. At that point, he probably held nothing against...but he looked and sounded miffed about it. Maybe just because he wants to preform his art and not because of a mysterious grudge? I don't know. This is a filler.

...well crap I ran out of image slots. Here's to hoping your imagination still works because I AM NOT DONE!

Sasori is fighting using a dead guy's corpse, Orochi summons said dead guy from the grave, Deidara looks somehow cute looking down from above. But he's also supposed to be handsome...hmmph.

Dang. Feels bad for the third Kazekage over there.

NOOO THE IRON SAND RAINED UP AT DEI AND ended up destroying the wing of his ride somehow...? He's coming crashing down.... Poor guy.

9:00 Deidara is raining explosives! Not much to comment.

In the subsequent scene, he's descending FAST into the ground. Which means you can catch his eye scope EVEN IF HES NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE IT YET

He's...getting a nice chance to shine, even if it's futile. Go, go Dei.

"After you two die, I'll resurrect you both in the same way."

Gee, the Kazekage really has it rough being Sasori's puppet and Orochimaru's pawn at the same time.

5:48 something Dei's flock of creations are being sent after Orochimaru www, he gets to have his scene and his signature line is said! "Art is... An explosion!" And sounds so enthusiastic too!~ so glad he's happy here, blowing up the sand disc thing....

...though there is one thing to mention. And it's that his ring, though on the correct hand and finger, is on the upper part of his finger just under the nail for some reason.

Man, that explosion was so dramatic.

Heh, everyone's having a holographic zoom meeting. No comment here... Well, one. Deidara. He's very cute there.

Oh. Second half. Hidan's there. I find it funny how he has a modern day jacket as his original fit... Either that or he hasn't got a top on. Inconsistencies. I much prefer the jacket though.

Now....many a minutes later. 18:55. Deidara's there, fleeting cherry blossoms. Deidara's doing his thing, performing his art. He blows up a castle! He looks very happy, he's in his element, he's where he's supposed to be! I don't know what art makes him feel like...but it seems to be good.

Dei... always so flashy.

There isn't Deidara anymore, so, I'm signing out.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (EP 8, 16, 24, 26)

I want to start off this post by talking about a new main character Asuka. It took me about 2 episodes to figure out she is Rei's opposite. Appearances: Blue hair and red hair. Long hair and short hair. Eye colors are different. One is soft-spoken, the other is vocal. One talks too little (from what I gather from the assigned episodes, I think Rei is supposed to be Eve or Lilith, but Asuka is like Shinji in that they are some descendants of the Evas or Angels or something that is not totally human, so this explains why she acts so cold), the other talks too much. Also the weird but true observation: one is indifferent to perverted accidents, the other is sensitive to perverted accidents; both may or may not [always] involve Shinji.

Asuka represents the tsundere stereotype, I think. I hear the "Baka, hentai!" comment from her a lot, but I can't tell if it's hormones or if she is actually attracted to Shinji. Shinji is a teenage boy, so I know he gets the classic red hand mark on his face, and it's rarely ever his fault. Those characters who are quick to anger and violence without listening to reason are often redheads, and I know it's a popular trope, but I realize as I am writing this the paradox of it all. Asuka is a young girl, and as a bit of a crazy anime watcher, I do believe violence is not always the answer, but it's wrong to assume violence is not an option. However, if every situation that triggers you is answered or resolved in violence, then it's rarely ever resolved. If Asuka even paused for a moment, she could tell Shinji probably did not even have the guts to pull harassment on any girl. To accuse him would make her the true culprit, not the victim. I know the children did not have parental figures to follow, but I guess their immaturity further proves they are really not qualified at all to be humanity's saviors. On the other hand, it is ironic that Asuka's hits can be overlooked so easily. Think about it, if a young boy suddenly had his p**is touched, accidentally or not, by a girl, he probably would just shove her off because if he hit her face, everyone would call him violent. Children who are used as child weapons are essentially taught that violence via their mecha skills is the ONLY solution to solve humanity's biggest problems, so quietly, it's the only solution for small misunderstandings.

Finally, the last episode was more philosophical than I thought. I didn't watch EP25 which I assume is the final battle because I don't think there is a sequel series. The ending didn't even explain what happened to humanity. But I think it's a good moral story to explain ego and self. The swap to 2D pencil drawings is a good way. Without depth, shadow, and background, a sketch exists limitless. I like how Shinji was always told what to do and how he should live. Even at his crisis, he asks people what he should do and how to live, they are the ones telling him the truth of how he should live. While I know the show is the one telling us the truth, to Shinji, it's still outsiders instructing him, even if they have his well-being in the best care possible. It was Shinji, experiencing the No Angels AU (that got to be an AO3 tag, if not, something like No Eva AU) or Middle/High School AU (love the silly shoujo reference with Rei, bread in mouth, "I'm going to be late on my first day of a school in this new city!", and headbumping ML, but not the accidental peeking), that he realizes the truth people have been trying to tell him this whole time. Funny how even his best friends care more about him than he does himself, and only when he really loves himself unconditionally, Eva or no Eva, even in a world where only he exists, that he can learn to actually love others, even his hated father becomes a person he can accept unconditionally. You realize after hearing all the voices, it's because they were people, not static faces with voices, that Shinji can compare his world and his self-image to everyone he meets in the show to find his true self.

It's such a roundabout way to explain everything. All anyone needs is a famous quote by a powerful warrior, one who transcended the mortal realm for his wisdom, bravery, and sheer popularity:

I never heard about ATLA until COVID-19. Funny because if I had heard of this show when it came out, I would have had a very different childhood.

Hello! I was just reading that post where you answered the ask about who got yuno pregnant (or, from how I'm guessing you phrased it, who yuno got pregnant from [does that makes sense?] and it slowly fell into place for me (i think it kinda makes sense? She wanted to stay with this guy, so the pregnancy, then the man said he couldn't have that, so abortion?)

just wondering, for some of the scenes during teardrop (specifically the one where she's lying down with her arm over her face and a water bottle), how does that fit into the theory? I've seen it be viewed as her getting drugged and stuff like that.

it's probably just me overthinking things and could be chalked up to yuno just being sick or whatever, but I was just wondering!

Okay, I can elaborate on that further. I really like Yuno and discussing her. She's a genuinely nice and well thought out character especially how they handle her occupation.

That phrasing makes sense because there are multiple people that could have been the cause of the pregnancy, I didn't think phrasing it as this is definitely the father would be right of me. Since the father of the child could have turned out to not be the man Yuno wanted to be with but another client. Since she seems to have been seeing multiple clients at around the same time.

This could also be one of the reasons she ended up getting an abortion. If a different client got her pregnant and a prenatal paternity test showed that the one who she liked was not the father, she may no longer have wanted the child as a result. This would play into the possible multiple meanings behind the line,

"I messed up. I found out."

I've discussed how Yuno and Haruka work as a pair briefly. However, I feel it's important to expand upon my previous points. Since at the time I didn't do her or Haruka justice since I was trying to get to the Futa and Muu post. Haruka and Yuno both killed to get the affection they were seeking whether it be from a parent or romantic partner.

Yuno's trial songs and covers reflect this aspect of her character. In contrast to Haruka's familial ties to the person he's seeking attention from Yuno has contractual ties to the person she wants affection from. Affection that cannot be fulfilled with how her relationships are now.

"UNDER” My cord’s being pulled but nothing’s ever enough Contractual desires, oh what to do, FUTURE."

She can't get the romantic satisfaction she's seeking because all of these dates are contractual. This difference in understanding romance and genuine affection between Haruka and Yuno is highlighted within their first written interrogation.

Q.03  What’s the difference between “love” and “romance”?

Haruka: Don’t they both mean liking someone?

Yuno: “Love” is the feeling and “romance” is the state, right?

Along with the difference in worldly experiences between them.

Q.14 What’s an event that’s stuck in your memory?

Haruka: Fireworks.

Yuno: There’s so many I can’t think of just one.

I've mentioned this before in another post but tear drops/tear drop is spelled wrong in English. In English it's a compound word teardrop like how you spelled it within the ask. However, the word tear on its own means to tear something up basically pull or rip it apart. So, this could be read as Tear Drop to tear and drop something.

A thing we see Yuno explicitly do within her music video as she messes up the room she was in throwing and breaking stuff. This isn't something that can be easily overlooked. A quick google search would tell someone the word isn't spelled this way. Looking in an English dictionary would very easily inform someone this is a compound word.

That coupled with this scene make this spelling choice come off as convenient and intentional wordplay. Sorry, getting sidetracked this does tie into your question though.

You see the pictures comparing the dates we see her photograph in the daytime in comparison to the evening shots we're shown in Tear Drop. Chances are that these dates were all day things as alluded to through the lyrics in Umbilical,

"Is it a day off tomorrow? But, anyway, let’s be together till the morning. “Good morning” “Good night” I want to be with you as many times as I can."

The scenes we see depicted in Tear Drop are more than likely just the aftermath of all the dates we see in Umbilical.

This means that when Yuno is lying down in the car, she more than likely was not drugged but taking a break from working all day. She could have even been waiting for the man she was with to come back out and drop her off closer to her neighborhood but nowhere near her actual house.

A lot of people's assumptions about Yuno's situation can only work if one assumes Yuno is stupid. I don't know how else to put it. One would have to assume that Yuno was in her words a,

"“Poor naive little girl”?" To get to that conclusion.

If it is to be believed that Yuno who has been doing sex work with multiple people was drugged in that scene. That would mean one of a few things happened,

A. Yuno took a random bottle of any sort of drink/ that had already been opened and possibly resealed or had no seal of any kind from this client. Then she did not ask where it came from or to go to a store to pick out a drink herself but instead just drank it to be polite and respectful of her client's generosity.

Because Yuno really cares about being polite, especially in work settings.

Yuno: Hey, Mikoto-san... Don’t you get tired being so conscious of others all the time? I mean, you’re free to do what you want though.

Mikoto: Eh…… Aha, what are you talking about? I’m not being conscious or anything. It’s normal to make sure to get along with everyone, right? I mean, when you put it like that, aren’t you the same, Yun-chan? You’re always smiling and getting on with everyone too.

Yuno: I don’t smile unless I actually want to. Though with you when you’re talking with other people it’s more like you only smile deliberately. So, I kept thinking, don’t your cheeks get tired? Ah, is this just what happens when you become a working adult? ……you see people like that sometimes.

Mikoto: Haha, you don’t mince your words do you. …….that was never my intention, but now that you mention it, yeah, I guess I do.

This might’ve been since I started my job too…… But like, if I was rude to everyone I met, all my efforts would come to nothing, right?

Mahiru: Yeah, I’m asking for what you like in the opposite sex! I mean, with a lifestyle like this we have a lot of free time, right? So earlier when I was talking with all the other girls we got onto the topic! It’s not often you get a chance like this to live with a mix of men and women together, so I thought it might be nice to use the chance to talk about stuff like this in preparation for when we leave.

Kazui: Ah…… Haha, I understand. I can see that’d be the sort of thing girls your age would be interested in, huh. How peaceful. What I like in the opposite sex… I don’t know if what I say will really be a good reference for you…… Ah, you know, since I’m at this age. I like a girl who can just smile free of worries. Seeing that’d make my old, tired heart feel young again.

Yuno: Uh-huh, I see, I see. ……that’s a total lie, right?

Kazui: Haha…… Give me a break here. You sure don’t make things easy for people, Kashiki-chan.

So, at this point her client had given her a random drink and she did not visibly see him get the drink beforehand. She's decided okay might as well trust it what's the worst that could happen. Not a common thing for anyone in her profession to do but she's young and reckless apparently let's throw caution to the wind. Despite that seeming completely out of character let's keep going down this road, maybe she really trusted and had faith in this client.

Even though based on her clothing it's not the client she was attracted to since that's the one she meets in her school uniform. Then after being drugged Yuno leant back the car seat to rest inside the car of the client who had just drugged her. Instead of removing herself from the situation immediately, going to the nearest public area, or seeking medical attention or help of any kind. Zero suspicions about being drugged or questions on why she's suddenly feeling tired nope she's like well I have been out all day.

Next option

B. Yuno at some time during her workday with this specific client left her drink/belongings within the vehicle unattended and the client tampered with them. Upon reentering the vehicle Yuno unsuspecting continued drinking her drink. This leads to the same events happening that unfold in option A.

Outside of it just seeming incredibly out of character for Yuno the other problem with this idea is that we are shown during the beginning of the date in Umbilical that the person or Yuno herself brought a different drink entirely. The one within the cupholder which was full during Umbilical and now sits empty during the overhead night view shot of her in the car during Tear Drop.

This is the same cup showing us that this event is taking place on the same day as the last scene we saw with her dressed the same way. The water bottle is the only new item here and Yuno's purse is now nowhere in the shot. Meaning there is a possibility that Yuno brought a water bottle with her inside her bag that she had at the beginning of the date. She then took out said water bottle for herself before placing the purse within the backseat more than likely after her client asked her to wait in the car.

She could have even snuck out of the car and purchased the bottle from somewhere nearby. However, if this client had the habit of having Yuno wait in the car as some can to avoid being seen with someone that is not their significant other in public. Then she very well could have brought water and food within the bag she arrived to the car with. This seems to be the case because we only see Yuno dressed like this when she is within a car.

Because of all this I believe what Yuno was doing here was just taking a moment for herself while waiting for who she was with to return to the car. Her appearing this fatigued also makes sense given that trial two establishes the fact that Yuno was at a time pregnant. Which can lead to fatigue and nausea throughout the day along with other symptoms. Far before a person ever becomes aware of the fact that they are pregnant.

Good, bad, or somehow both? The [simultaneously] best and worst of S6 Voyager

We’re nearing the Alpha Quadrant in our watchthrough of Star Trek: Voyager and the episodes are leveling off to come in for a landing. Most of season 6 of the show is middle-of-the-road, with thought-provoking elements AND missed opportunities abounding simultaneously, often in the same episodes. This was a tricky season for your hosts at A Star to Steer Her By to pick top and bottom episodes for, and our individual tastes really colored our selections more than usual.

So much so, in fact, that for the first time since our coverage of The Animated Series there are multiple episodes featured on both the tops and bottoms lists! There’re also a good number of episodes we just found solidly good or solidly bad, so see where they’ve fallen in our picks below and listen to this week’s podcast coverage (season wrap starts at 1:00:03) which features extra picks from guest star Liz!

Top Three Episodes

While we weren’t as wowed as we were for previous seasons, the episodes of season six tended to be more character-driven, personal, and driven by the hope that drives the Voyager closer on its journey home. There’s some good stuff in these quieter, more overlooked episodes that we want to shout out to.

“Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy”: Jake Every so often, Star Trek gets comedy right, and surprising no one, it’s usually when the Emergency Medical Hologram is involved. Robert Picardo just brings so much to even his smaller moments that it’s commendable, and good to see his turn as the Emergency Command Hologram to showcase a bunch of good jokes. Too many jokes perhaps? You be the judge since we’ll hear more about this episode shortly…

“Spirit Folk”: Chris Another episode we see multiple sides of is the sequel to the earlier episode “Fair Haven” (more on that in a moment). Again, it’s one of those comedy episodes that you find yourself either laughing or groaning at, but this one had some really fun moments. From the townspeople turning from NPCs to protagonists, to the Kathryn-Michael relationship feeling more right, to the zany witchcraft, there’s something to giggle about.

“Life Line”: Caitlin What’s better than one Bob Picardo being a diva? Two Bob Picardos being divas, of course! The relationship between the EMH and his creator Lewis Zimmerman is so fraught that it’s almost too familiar (you’ve seen our Parents in Star Trek blogpost, right?) and yet so nice to watch them grow together and come to understand each other, even if it’s just a little bit.

“One Small Step”: Ames Much of this episode is hauled up by some really lovely scenes from frequent Trek face Phil Morris as Commander John Kelly. We get to see this doomed astronaut’s final logs after he was lost in a space ravioli, and they’re so touching that they warm the cold heart of a former Borg drone. Seven gets to see firsthand why we honor historical milestones and the amazing people behind them.

“Child’s Play”: Jake We also talked in our Parents blogpost about Icheb’s monstrous mother and father who are very firmly in the worst category of parents, but this episode itself is also a bit of a fascinating story. The Brunali are a people constantly attacked by the Borg and they are willing to create and sacrifice their own children to take them down. What we get is a great ethical dilemma for Seven to solve when she herself becomes a protective parental figure and it’s lovely to see.

“Pathfinder”: Chris Finally, a moment of hope for the Voyager crew after their attempts to get home keep getting dashed over the course of the previous seasons. It’s a lovely victory for Barclay, and we also get to rejoice in watching him concoct a plan to get in touch with his latest obsession, with the help of a holographic recreation of its crew and also Troi, who is useful for a change! Sure, Reg’s holo-addiction is still a problem, but he’s using it to his advantage.

“Memorial”: Ames, Caitlin This episode is bound to elicit a response because of how much (and how well!) it depicts how people react to trauma. The PTSD that the whole crew ends up suffering from is something that’s so important to see as a focus, and it’s so very human (or Talaxian a little). On top of that, we get a unique perspective on how people spread their histories, and the way they go about it is about as messed up as histories themselves tend to be. No species will ever learn.

“Blink of an Eye”: Caitlin, Jake Speaking of histories, “Blink of an Eye” tells the story of a whole society’s development over eons in a single sitting. It’s one of those episodes that is told in such a fascinating manner that it captures your attention and your imagination. Each little vignette from the hyperfast aliens is a perfect little bite from their society, exactly the right size to entice. And ending the whole thing with a moving performance from Daniel Dae Kim? Delicious.

“Riddles”: Ames, Chris Wrapping up our list is a true dark horse candidate, the surprisingly moving and delicately handled episode of rehabilitation and recovery, told in a way that is supportive but strong – just like the Neelix-Tuvok relationship. These two may be most frequently paired together as the comedic odd couple, but when Tuvok is impaired and Neelix is there for him, it reminds you how sweetly their characters fit together. I love their weird love.

Bottom Three Episodes

Not a ton of truly bad stuff this season, which is where disagreements in our lists tend to come from. When there’s not a lot to choose from, we get nitpicky. And when we get nitpicky, we get pedantic. The real missteps that were made this season… well, you’ll see those too.

“Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy”: Ames While this episode made one tops list, there’s also some squicky characterizations that drag it to the bottom as well. The Doctor is shown to be conceited, lewd, and downright gross in many of his fantasies, making us all cringe through scenes of him painting Seven in the nude, fondling Janeway’s bottom, and combating every female crewman’s insatiable thirst. And the alien antagonist Phlox, whom we’re supposed to unwittingly forgive for his earlier scenes, is just a power-hungry fascist. There, I said it.

“Spirit Folk”: Caitlin One more substantial disagreement is that other comedy episode that we mentioned above since so much of the funny gags and jokes are just downright stupid. Everything is way too convenient, we miss all the opportunities to explore the rights of these holopeople, and, frankly, “Who Watches the Watchers?” did the premise better. But that was another episode that we disagreed on back in the day, so who even knows anymore? And we’ll never hear from this holoprogram again anyway! Ack!

“Fair Haven”: Ames, Jake But we’re not done shitting on Tom’s little Irish village just yet! Why literally everyone on the crew was SO into a simple open sandbox Ireland world in the holodeck was beyond us, for one thing, but the romance between Janeway and Sullivan was just as perplexing. We were stumped where the conflict in this episode was even coming from because the only way for it to work was to turn the captain into a lovelorn, giggling schoolgirl and that doesn’t make sense. Delete the episode.

“Good Shepherd”: Chris, Jake We loved the TNG episode “Lower Decks,” and this cobbled-together mess is no “Lower Decks.” The three minor characters are boring at best and utterly obnoxious at worst. When Janeway decides to take them under her wing, anyone watching can’t help but wish she just left them in the bowels of the ship where they belong. And making matters even worse, any chance any of them has to grow as a character is negated when Janeway practically single-handedly saves the day anyway!

“Barge of the Dead”: Ames, Caitlin, Chris Like with “Sacred Ground” which we disliked so much several seasons ago, any exploration of religious faith just doesn’t work on this show. So Gre’thor is just a real place you can consistently visit by having a near-death experience? That’s a thing that this show has now established, and I’m personally peeved off by it. And Torres, who doesn’t even believe in this stuff in the first place, is completely out of character all episode long! Today was NOT a good day to die.

“Fury”: Caitlin, Chris, Jake Another of our good friends who’s entirely out of character is Kes, who returns from a perfectly good farewell and shits all over “The Gift” for no good reason. It’s like the writers forgot what kind of person Kes was in order to make this episode work. We don’t get to know why she became so embittered and scornful, but someone just decided it was so and dragged poor Jennifer Lien in to act in “Gaslighting: The Episode.” Things were great for you, Jennifer, because we say so.

The second episode of Elvira's Movie Macabre aired on October 03, 1981. It featured 1972's Silent Night, Bloody Night, a low budget slasher set around Christmas. The film is notable for featuring many Andy Warhol superstars, including transgender icon Candy Darling in her final film role, as well as being co-produced by Lloyd Kaufman before founding Troma Entertainment.

I'll admit I'm not much of a fan of slasher movies. I prefer my horror to have supernatural or psychological elements. A normal (or "crazy") human going around killing normal humans with normal human tools often fails to engage me. Despite that, this movie kept my attention, though sometimes perhaps for the wrong reasons.

Though the creepiest part of the movie was the child singing Silent Night at the beginning, there is nothing about this movie that requires an association with Christmas. The film could have been set at any time of the year and the only real changes would have been the occasional set decoration or costume.

The filmmaking was both ambitious and incompetent. Multiple scenes were poorly lit or framed. However, we're also treated to really effective first-person shots of the slasher, a perspective that had been done before (and since) but was still relatively uncommon at the time. The kills were often silly, the equivalent to hitting an empty sack with a stick. The gore was light and often cheesy looking. The story was easy to follow if you can overlook gaps in logic and competent storytelling.

There was something about this movie that made me think of early John Waters, just without his vision or comedic timing. Many of the people from the town just felt like awkward weirdos just being themselves. For Waters, it works. Here, it feels unintentionally deadpan. Mary Woronov's performance was a highlight, though perhaps only in the context of this movie. I think I'll seek out more of her movies.

If you enjoy pre-1980's low budget slashers, consider adding Silent Night, Bloody Night to your watchlist. You know, somewhere near the bottom of the list.

Interviewer: So I heard your mum is being asked about your whereabouts and general existence.

Me: Oh. That’s new. By who?

Interviewer: I hear it’s from your friends.

Me: That’s strange. Well I guess I’m going to have to tell her that the person they’re all looking for…she’s not around anymore. Because you know they’re not looking for this dilapidated person.

Interviewer: Oh? Who do think they want?

Me: The other me. The old me. High school-me. The me that isn’t even me anymore.

Interviewer: What was she like?

Me: She was…different. Filled with everything but despair. Nothing felt impossible to her. She was surrounded by love. She was so brave; she would sit in a classroom and openly disagree against a general consensus. Stand up for the less equipped and she would do it with a few quick words. Smiled at the overlooked and made friends with the soft-spoken. I liked her. She had it figured out and made no apologies for not liking the same trends.

Interviewer: You say she’s gone. What happened to her?

Me: She could handle high school. A high school filled with glorified idiots and downtrodden gems. She knew how to navigate it after 8 years. But sometimes I wonder if she was really that person all. I think she just became adept to layering all this happiness so she didn’t have to feel anything else. Focused on others so there wasn’t time for her. Mostly to lure them away from the truth. Well I’m sure she was somewhat happy. But not something that she felt in her core, it was more of light glow around her that was enough for people to believe.

Interviewer: So why did she decide to leave?

Me: She ended up as a speck in a big city, where minuscule emotions such as hers were washed up as fast as the seasons changed. There was a disappearance of sorts.

Interviewer: Anyway we can reach her and get her back? She sounds lovable.

Me: She was difficult to love though, with a mind like that. But if you went looking, the closest thing you’d find is her skin with a different version underneath.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (EP 1, 2, 4, 5)

I heard about Neon Genesis Evangelion (NGE) both from learning about what was early anime when I first started watching anime and my uncle actually has a slot machine based on the show.

(The professor also had an example for the essay project that focused on this show, so I came in a little informed and possibly biased since I noticed signs the essay example talked about. I could've figured it out without it though; the signs were actually quite clear.)

I know it is harsh to critique the flaws of an anime made nearly 30 years ago, but some of the flaws seen in shonen anime seems to stem or at least has connections with NGE.

The camera will angle itself so that it captures a part of a girl/woman's body intimately. Episode 5 had Shinji accidentally fall on top of Rei after she just come out of a bath. Not to mention why Misato was so insistent on Shinji moving in with her is quite overlooked. Not to validate this alternative, but should they both have a gender swap, this anime would be very red-flagged. Also, Misato is Shinji's superior at work, and I think he probably does the majority of the chores, given how trashy the room was before he moved in and her lazy habits hint that the chore distribution chart is unevenly divided.

Shinji represents the anti-war archetype for young boys because he knows he was thrown into the program by his father, whom he hasn't seen in a long time, and the actual crisis humanity faces if the program cannot find a replacement for him. In addition, if he chooses to run, which he did, Rei will have to fulfill his role, and she is already unhealthy (and if it means anything she is a girl), guilt-tripping Shinji. In addition, every time he uses the Eva for combat purposes, every injury to the machine causes excruciating psychosomatic pain for him.

A weird thing about the Evas is that they seem like machines, yet they seem to be sentient. I know one thing that threw me off was the need to submerge the pilots in the fluid they also breathe in (imagine telling a fish to "breathe" out of water). Like when Rei was doing a test, even after her body was ejected out of the machine, the machine still was moving on its own before the manual shutdown was completed. And given how Angels are like celestial or alien counterparts to humans, I'm guessing Evas are supposed to be some science versus God weapon that uses a magic or something to defeat supernatural beings.

This actually would look as scary as the Angels in real life.

I'm on episode 4 and while I wasn't gonna do another one of these I've already had to put my phone down and walk around my room so here we are.

I remember literally 80 seconds in I couldn't take a damn thing seriously- this is gonna be veryyy fun to watch

I can now see so many references rise (18) made and I'm going insane /pos New iterations make references to its past media! Who knew!

I think April is missing a rib or two /hj girl is absolutely snatched. I love her pants, I want those irl. (Classic big pants little shirt combo (why am I so gay))

Oh look! The boys are bonding over their anger issues! Why are they even fighting rn o(-( rise Casey is so small. Why is this Casey jacked- "for a little green dude, you are totally nuts" WHY IS HE SO SHORT YOURE RIGHT. he tough but smol. Lmfao. "Well isn't this romantic" HELLO??!??? guess I wasn't the only one getting enemies to lovers vibes over here, but you didn't need to point it out- damn. (Am I getting baited? Despite being the person whose name was most similar-sounding to Kaiji, Keiichi was the least-Kaiji-ish participant in this Kaiji joke, and the lead girls (by which I just mean Mion) are filled with smoldering fury or some such. However, in a deeply Kaiji fashion, Keiichi transitions from least-Kaiji-ish to most-Kaiji-ish. He enacts a clever gambit: Bullying children.

I have to ask... I truly have to ask... why was "Pretty girls!!" the part without voice acting. It appears there is a disconnect between the English and the Japanese, methinks.

Keiichi makes Toddlers 03 and 04 bleed all over the place. I can't remember why I ever felt sympathy for Keiichi. Something about hallucinations? It doesn't matter anymore.

If I made mochi for Keiichi, I would also put a needle in it. There, I said it.

Mion is so insecure about her intelligence... the joke's on the Insecurities Devil, because I say stupid stuff exclusively, and I'm the biggest most genius 100% of the time, so Mion objectively doesn't suck.

I believe I am beginning to grasp the shape of it... within horror-drama scenes, it's impossible for anyone with a conscience and an opened third eye to not feel deep empathy for Keiichi and Rena, the most obviously mentally ill characters... however, within lighthearted comedy scenes... oh yes, things are different within those scenes... within those scenes, Keiichi and Rena, the characters who accumulate Rena Points, are easily the most puntable characters by far!!!

So then, how does it all balance out? How can it be determined who is truly the worst Higurashi character? Well, the third-most-puntable character... the most-puntable mentally-healthy(?) character... is Toddler 01. HOWEVER!!! Toddler 01 being the worst Higurashi character... if I am not mistaken... is a Normie Opinion, isn't it?! I, a Self-Proclaimed Freak and God-Emperor of Having Something Wrong With Me, refuse to let my shroud of hipsterism drop for even an instant... Toddler 01 CANNOT be MY least-favorite Higurashi character!!! Therefore, taking into consideration the fact that having Mion as my least-favorite is rendered utterly out-of-the-question by the fact that she's the best one... heh, there's only one option, isn't there?
