Preston/Gage is a really interesting dynamic - It's hard not to notice that they have a LOT in common, but stand on completely opposing sides especially when it comes to morality. Seeing as you're the only person I can find who actually ships these two, I just wanted your thoughts on how those two might work in more than just a hatefuck/bad-time situation? Especially considering Preston's history and trauma relating to raiders. Even if it's not a romantic/sexual way, just both working for Sole and not tearing each other apart?

In all seriousness, the similarities are by design. My friend and I (we're like the only two people that actively ship them), noticed a while ago that Gage and Preston are written to be narrative foils. They're very similar in their over arching goals, wants, motives, backstories, etc. But they're complete opposites when it comes to their morals and personalities. And that's on purpose. They're differences contrast each other to highlight them, and make them easier to spot and see, usually for the main character. In this case it's us, the player.

Basically, my friend and I often say that they both believe that community is the best at surviving. But for Preston it's about working together and helping to rebuild and defend, while for Gage it's about power and taking what you need (survival of the fittest, but community style).

In terms of working together? Oh boy, I've got a lot of thoughts.

Particularly, I have a bunch of AUs where Preston is forced by Gage to become the Overboss, and AUs where Gage is forced to work under the Sole Survivor. A lot of the time, their working together is due out of pure necessity. Mostly because Gage is threatening innocent people either outright or just by his presence alone (plot related stuff).

It's always very tense and usually there's a major threat if one lets the other die, forcing them both to behave. Preston and Gage in terms of actually fighting and working together is interesting. Preston is used to a more long ranged, structured, and defensive style, while Gage is more close quarters, chaotic, and aggressive (which is actually reflected a little in their companion perks). And both of them seem to prefer planning strategies and working with teams. So, they actually compliment each other. When they're not arguing over everything that is.

But in terms of... expressing themselves, actually talking to each other? It's a bit of a toss up. A lot of the time, when they aren't arguing or insulting each other, both like to slap down truth bombs every once in a while. Making the other see a new perspective, even if they don't want to. Preston pointing out Gage's unwillingness to trust anyone, while Gage points out that trusting no one got him this far in the first place. Gage being the first in line to criticize setters for always needing help, making them weak and unable to defend themselves. Preston in turn, criticizes raiders for their overzealous belief in taking rather than building, growing, stabilizing, which just makes them just as weak. Both not realizing that the other is working towards trying to change that. Trying to get their respective factions to grow strong enough to be self sufficient.

I also think, weirdly, they would be willing to defend the other when it comes to people criticizing their work ethics. They're both hard working, they both get shit done, they're competent. And to question that of either man, sets the other off. They may hate each other, but both of them have a willingness to put work in, to (excuse the language here) pull themselves up by the bootstraps and get shit done. It's a weird respect they both share.

In terms of trauma... it's hard. So damn hard. They were both betrayed, horribly so, basically left to die. Gage took away the idea that he can't trust anyone, but also still looking for people to just listen to him. While Preston was left with so many feelings of worthlessness and bitterness, yet he still wants to find a way to help.

In many of my AUs, I like to imagine a scenario where both of them, being forced to work together, have to confront Clint. And it always ends with Gage taking Preston's side. Not because most of my aus involve them being in some kind of fucked up relationship, but because Gage would HATE Clint. On principal. Which, I think says a lot about Gage's character.

I could go on and on, but that's just my present thoughts atm. I'm thinking of making a general Fallout discord server that focuses more on lore and fandom, so if anyone would be interested in more of my ramblings about my specific AUs and weird little ships, I'll definitely be posting an invite link soon. In the mean time, feel free to just poke my brain about Preston/Gage (or Preston/Maxson cause I ship that too lmaoooo), or any of my AUs. I've got a lot of them.

One Piece AU idea - Fallout 4 Crossover Part 1

general premise is as follows (subject to change)

Factions

Railroad -> Revolutionary Army

Railroad splinter group -> Heart pirates

Enclave -> Celestial Dragons -> Gorosei are influencing the NCR

NCR -> World Government

Institute -> Germa 66 -> has a alliance with the Enclave

SRB -> CP9 etc.

Nukaworld Raider/bosses -> Pack (Beast pirates), Disciples (Big Mom pirates), Operators (Donquixote pirates). -> Blackbeard is trying to be the Overboss.

Nukaworld splinter group -> Kid pirates (was a small time gang that got absorbed)

Gunners -> Cross guild/warlords

Previous Minute Men -> was led by General Gol D Roger

Post-Minute Men splinter groups/allies -> Red Hair pirates, Whitebeard pirates

Strawhats -> New Minute Men (kinda)

Mayors -> Goodneighbor (Buggy), Dimond City (Cobra), Bunker Hill (Iceberg)

Plot? -> the NCR is invading the Commonwealth (under orders of the Enclave) to "bring order" to Boston. The Minute Men tried to fight them off but failed (Rodger was executed, the one piece is exists).

Devil Fruit are replaced with mutations (can still be caused by fruit) known as Genos ,and are considered the 4th generation of super mutants but no one is entirely sure how it works.

Characters (in development)

Sanji (Synth - Gen 4 Prototype) - Was previously at the Institute as a prototype of a new generation of synths, with initial plans for him to be a new type of Courser. However was 'Born' with emotions/sentience. Fled with the help of the Railroad and Reiju. Had a mind wipe and now lives in Dimond City with Zeff (ex-raider) and works at Power Noodle (he can understand Takahashi like how Nick Valentine can). Friends with Usopp (runs Dimond City Radio and is the Railroad agent who helped Sanji escape and relocate after his mind wipe), Takahashi (is secretly relived someone else can understand them), and Nick Valentine (helped Zeff after he left the raiders, knows Sanji is a synth and acts like a weird uncle at times).

Robin (Synth - Gen 3 - Ex Courser) - Prior to gaining her sentience, was previously at the Institute operating in the Synth Retention Bureau. However slowly gained emotions through interacting and later saving Chopper and Jinbe who were both imprisoned experiments of the Institute. Now on the run from the Institute and currently hiding with Chopper and Jinbe, where they meet Franky who takes them in to live at GoodNeighbor. is now working at The Third Rail as a bar tender/back up singer for Magnolia. Is still haunted by her actions as a Courser.

Chopper (Intelligent mutant reindeer) - Was born in the Institute as a experiment to test the mental capabilities of a herbivorous mammals when exposed to a modified form of FEV . Was kept in captivity and raised by Dr Hiriluk and Dr Kureha in secret, as he was more emotionally intelligent then what the experiment allowed along side Jinbe. Was then discovered and befriended Robin who found the secret lab by a teleportation glitch. After the lab was raided by SRB looking for Robin, was assisted by Dr Hirluk in escaping who sacrificed himself to let the others escape the facility. He is now on the run from the Insitute with Robin and Jinbe, currently living with Franky at Goodneighbor working at the Memory Den. (Dr Kureha is alive and assisting the Railroad at the Memory den with Chopper).

Jinbe (Intelligent Deathclaw (quantum deathclaw)) - was captured and experimented on by the Institute. Was kept hidden in the secret lab with the help of Dr Kureha and Fisher Tiger (who was also an experiment). Helped the doctors to raise Chopper (he is pretty much Chopper's uncle/dad) and Robin with her new emotions. Tried to help the other Intelligent experiments escape but was unable to save Fisher Tiger, lost track of the others during the SRB Raid. Is now on the run with Robin and Chopper from the Institute, currently living with Franky at Goodneighbor. Works part-time at Daisy's Discounts (buys Chopper and Robin books with Daisy's help finding them)

Cait:

•She feels like Sole has somehow betrayed her, lied to her in some crazy way even if they had no idea of their identity. She wouldn't handle it well at all.

Curie:

•She would be at best, confused. Although it wouldn't make much sense that sole would have a clear label saying "yep, im a synth!" It just seems like she would've been able to tell..however seeing how seamless sole integrated themselves into wasteland life makes her hopeful.

Danse:

•This can end very badly. The only way sole is going to leave with their life is if it's post Blind Betrayal when he finds out. It sounds so bad, but Danse tells himself and genuinely believes that ending their existence is the greatest favor he can grant them..and it would only keep everyone else safe no matter how bad it hurts him. Nonetheless, post BB Danse would probably bond with sole over their identities, drawing inspiration from his friend and how well they've demonstrated heroism despite being an "evil" abomination.

Deacon:

•He knew from the beginning. His perception of sole isn't changed in the slightest- however he finds it hard not to pity them when they speak of their pre-war life as though it was truly their's.

Gage:

•Not many things get under his skin but this? This truly bothers gage. He won't cut off contact with his overboss, but he'll never have the level of trust that was once potentially there ever again.

Hancock:

•He takes it very well! Hancock is the type to accept anyone and everyone regardless of what they are so long as they prove to be a good person deep down.

Macready:

•Oh hell no.

Maxson:

•Sole is as good as dead in this case. The only exception is if he had an intimate romantic relationship with them prior to finding out- but even then, he'll exile them and cry his heart out later on.

Nick:

•It really hurts Nick's heart to be enlightened to this. All that time he and sole spent looking for shaun..just for sole to end up being a synth? Look, he knows what it's like to have memories of another time that weren't technically "his" but..this was just cruel.

Piper:

•She isn't as bothered as she would've thought she would've been in this scenario. True, being a synth is kind of a shock- but sole hasn't given her any reason to be fearful so..why would she be?

Preston:

•He isn't real sure what to think...so long as sole has done nothing but good for those around them..it's okay.

X6-88:

•Upon learning that sole is a synth, X6-88 would seriously begin to question Father's capability for humanity. How could he unleash a copy of his parent, one that was severely traumatized, out in the wastes to go on a wild goose chase? That is messed up.
