#otp: my beautiful beautiful makkari
Text
@makkarilover
There hadn't been any Deviant attacks recently — not since they all prevented the emergence, but that didn't make Earth safe. The Deviants were still back — the only useful piece of information that Ikaris gave the Eternals (before trying to kill them). Technically, the area Druig and Makkari had been staying in was peaceful, but it was just a mirage. An attack could happen anytime, but Druig still tried to keep humans safe and ease their thoughts.
The power of telepathy and empathy was a challenging ability. Most of the Eternals didn't understand how arduous it was on Druig — after all,he feels everything. Unlike their powers, he can't just simply shut his off. The mind is always active. For that reason, Druig spent a lot of time putting up mental barriers, so he didn't always have to sense others' feelings. Whether it was fear, anger, hate, sadness, or any other emotion. But that just worked sometimes.
However, being with Makkari made it a little more manageable (though he'd never admitted that to her). It was easy being with her because she understood him in a way the others didn't. The others usually saw him as a jerk, but Makkari actually saw through the facade. He could just be him with her. Their relationship was complicated, but what Druig was sure of was that he loved her. Druig's eyes rotated to the side as he gazed at Makkari.
" It's just a matter of finding them." The words left his lips in a soft tone as he signed at her.

Eternals has way too many ships, but only one matters to me!
Me: Watches Eternals movie 3 months late on Disney+
Surprise: Somehow manages to avoid spoilers!!!(Probably cuz never read the comics, nor watched the movie clips)
Watches all the new characters: faints
Tumblr media
Spends 2hrs organizing thoughts on movie and recollects everything.
Goes to YT: Watches Breakdowns and explanations of the movie(instead of doing homework)
Mentally organizes all the ships in the movie and decides favourites:
Sprite x Ikaris : NO!!
Sersi x Ikaris : Meh
Thena x Eros : Interesting😏, needs more time
Sersi x Dane Whitman : Interesting
Thena x Gilgamesh : Heartbreaking, please give them a happy ending😥
Phastos x Ben Stoss : Perfection, they deserve to be happy together
Druig x Makkari : OTP! Perfection! Incredible! Amazing! Eternal pairing! Unstoppable!

Me: Watches She-Hulk Episode 1
Everyone: Talks about anger issues and sexism, Badass Jennifer Walters, Bad CGI, Steve Rogers Fuc--
Me: Bruce and Tony. Tony and Bruce. Bruce and Tony. Tony and Bruce. Bruce and Tony.......(on loop)
...
Bonus: Those damn initials!
They remind me too much of romance movies where people carve their initials to showcase their undying love.

Science BFFs
Tumblr media
Bruce Banner and Tony Stark have such beautiful friendship and I'm just tearing up everytime I see Bruce being sad about Tony in She-Hulk Ep 1.
From the moment they meet they finish each other sentences whether it be about science theories or just quips.
Tony (to Bruce when they first meet): Finally someone who speaks English.

I love how there’s a moment after Druig says, “my beautiful, beautiful, Makkari,” that they just briefly stare into each other’s eyes. It’s as if everything goes into slow motion, and there’s just the two of them left in the room (probably how they felt in that moment). Then Makkari quickly takes the Tablet and Druig directly asks if she missed him (cue the staring & head tilt again).
Their chemistry...it’s beautiful and intense.

In general, I don’t talk about movies online right after they’ve come out of respect for people who haven’t seen them but I have to say one of the funniest things about this last week is finding out which of the blogs I follow have seen Eternals by the sudden influx of Drukkari posts on my dash.
Their chemistry is truly unparalleled 😂

the scream of anguish that makkari let’s out when ikaris starts attacking druig made my heart stop. and the way she walks up to him without using her superspeed to make sure he is okay and way she checks him for injuries, and they gently touch foreheads they have my entire heart and i am not sorry about it.

drukkari 😈😈 this is abt to get really good i can feel it
Tumblr media
I have known this 5 minutes of screentime ship for less than a month and have already written 2 fics, inhaled like 45 top fics in the tag and have 2 more extensive fics plotted out in my brain. HELP.
What made you ship it? I am a speedster slut as everyone already knows so it was not going to take very long for me to be obsessed with Makkari. And again, the ‘side characters’ superheroes who are best friends trope is literally my OTP drug. I thought Druig was a really interesting character too because his powers were very Brainwave-y which is usually a villain type power not a hero power so I was like oh??? And then I saw the way he spoke to Makkari “she also said stealing is very very bad 😏” and I was like .... what am I watching??? Druig??? FLIRTING?? And THEN we got to the holy Beautiful, beautiful Makkari scene and I literally have not been the same ever since. I am UNWELL. Like...HELLO??????? THE CHEMISTRY.
What are your favorite things about the ship? Their communication is so open which is really striking considering there is SO much mystery to their past and the nature of their relationship!! I am also obsessed with the way you can pair these two with mythological couples and the archetypes they represent. I am obsessed with the fact this is like ??? a slow burn ship over THOUSANDS OF YEARS????? And it’s private and secret and flirty but REAL and theirs alone?? I also really love Makkari’s love language both in how she expresses and receives is physical touch, you can even see it in her rage in the fight against Ikaris. She thought Druig was GONE. And she poured every fibre of her cosmic being into the grief that caused her. The layers of it all the LAYERS. And to find out so much of it was just IMPROV? EXCUSE ME???? We were NOT prepared. The potential here is unmatched. I am so excited to see these two together on the Domo stuck with Eros because....hey. Sticking two Eternals with obvious feelings for each other with the other Eternal with the speciality of these feelings? Yes. Double yes.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? idk if i have one but i will use this space to say I want a drukkari wedding. I want to see Druig sign marriage vows KNOWING the risk and KNOWING what happened to Ikaris and Sersi and just not caring because he will love Makkari forever. Makkari will never be bored again. Goodbye.

(Spoilers!)
Never thought that one day Civil War is going to stop being my fave MCU film. But alas here we are.
Oh my god, Eternals is the best thing in that genre. I love every single of those idiots.
I cried with Thena when Gilgamesh died because that goddess took over my heart with her grief, complexity and grace.
I understood every word of Sprite's speech and felt tears well up at the idea of how much she suffered.
I fell in love with Ikaris and then had my heart broken. I still think he wasn't entirely wrong, nor that he should be blamed for following what always believed as the right cause. He was a soldier, after all.
Makkari and Druig, my beloveds... if that ain't the OTP then I don't know. Plus, she's badass and her energy is everything.
Sersi, my queen, her peace and good heart gave me hope that I longed for.
And god, the soundtrack, Ramin outdid himself again.
Finally, Chloe - I love you. From the moment I saw Nomadland I knew I will enjoy her take on a Marvel film. But I never knew how much until today.
Sooo... haters can go fuck themselves, especially if your only reasons are those that made this film so incredible. The diversity, the pacing and beauty of every frame.

you’re gonna work on your druig fic? 👀 i haven’t worked on mine at all… everytime i think about writing it, i can’t help but think “oh but he literally would never choose anyone besides makkari…” defeated by my own OTP lol. there is a kingo idea i’m gonna start too. also! idk if you’ve ever watched peaky blinders (i just started, thank you @ithinkhesgaybutwesavedmufasa ) but i want druig and tommy shelby to be in the same room. does it make sense? no. do i care? also no. they’d almost certainly hate each other on-sight lmao
anyway have a safe flight love!!!! -keanu anon
I can't believe I sat on this ask for so long -- I'm SO SORRY! I hope you had a lovely holiday and a Happy New Year celebration, my beautiful Keanu anon. May your 2022 be full of sweetness and light.
I am totally on the same page -- I really can't see Dru with anyone other than Makkari, but I also want to kiss him, so the canon here is ... fungible.
I'm still working on it, but have had some time this weekend. I just need to remind myself that it WILL be acceptable reading material and not to get so hung up on whether or not an amorphous number of people will like/read it and just do something I will enjoy. Which is always the hardest part of writing for me.
It's funny that you bring up Peaky Blinders because someone ELSE was just talking to me about a Peaky Blinders Mayans AU and THAT made a lot of sense to me, too. I think we're all on a similar wavelength, here...

So I’m sure Druig mouths, “We’re okay. I’m okay,” when he’s hugging Makkari at the end. But when his forehead is up to hers and he opens his eyes to take her in, I’d like to dream he says, “My beautiful, Makkari.” He almost died, and seeing her once more is everything he needs at that moment. It’s relief, gratitude, joy, and love.
Fate is on their side.

The eternal silence of beauty
Summary: It had been over five hundred years, and yet Druig could still imagine Makkari's radiant smile, even with his eyes wide open. Hidden moments of connection between Druig and Makkari.
A/N: If you're reading this, you, like myself, have most likely become obsessed with this pair. I loved Eternals, and Drukkari was a blessing I didn't see coming. The moments we had with them, last in my mind and have inspired me to write again (after a long dry spell). I wanted to add more moments we didn't get to witness; those quiet hidden moments and feelings revealed in the aftermath of the Emergence. Enjoy!
Read on ao3

Beauty was all around him—in the form of how the water flowed down the jagged hillside to the vibrant wildflowers blossoming in spring. But nothing ever conquered Druig's perception like his beautiful Makkari.
It had been over five hundred years, and yet Druig could still imagine Makkari's radiant smile, even with his eyes wide open.
When Druig had left his family long ago, he did so with a heated vengeance; it was his calling, a purpose only he could answer.
He never regretted that choice to go his own way, but the one thing Druig did regret was not asking a mere question: "Makkari, will you come with me?"
Creating a family of humans was nothing without her. It was his mistake, his burden, and ultimately, his undoing.
Haunted by this question, Druig dreamed of it repeatedly, seeing Makkari's answering smile of light and love. Even more, Druig could recognize the acceptance she held to who and what he was, even though she no longer stood by his side.
Eternal loneliness was a dagger to his heart, and so often, Druig felt there had been a glitch in his creation.
The others had a touch of light and openness to those around them—Druig didn't have that ingredient in his system.
Druig felt the Eternals were trivial with their orders, while the humans whined as they fought for power in meaningless and painful ways.
Makkari was the light within the darkness that surrounded him. The first moment he had seen her lovely smile, it had taken his breath right out of his lungs as if she had run away with it.
What made Druig happy was that he and Makkari gravitated towards each other effortlessly, naturally. In truth, they had fun with their powers, especially when being mischievous. To them, it's what made immortality worth living.
The two always had this unique bond, one that the others never actually noticed.
Ajak was busy mothering and directing their actions. Sersi and Ikaris had fallen into their own world together. Thena had always been looking for a threat to fight. Gilgamesh was their protector when they needed it the most. Phastos was felicitously squandered within his creations. Kingo was occupied with staring in the mirror, quoting phrases that no one understood. And Sprite was incessantly whining, which Druig did sympathize.
Druig had enjoyed ruffling each one of their feathers when he could, especially Ikaris, the second in command to Ajak—the Golden Soldier. He was well aware he drove them all crazy, except for Makkari.
He never ventured to piss her off; instead, he preferred teasing her—his secret way of communicating, which always had resulted in Druig's desire to flirt with her.
She had a particular smirk only for him, and he savored witnessing it whenever in her captivating presence. Makkari would frequently swat at his arm playfully, not even needing to sign. They had their own language, one only they knew, and Druig was thankful for that.
He had continually been so grateful that at least one person could recognize him, and Makkari saw him effortlessly.
So all these years without her felt like a deep-sized hole within his heart. No matter who Druig mind-controlled in a world of peace he created, no one could fill her void.
Today was different, though. Today was the beginning of something Druig hadn't controlled.
His eternal family had reappeared at his Amazon rainforest doorstep.
However, it wasn't a happy reunion on his part. The first person Druig searched for wasn't there. Disappointment and anger started flowing through his veins; Druig wanted nothing more than to boot them all away.
Had they truly left Makkari on her own? That beautiful, beautiful soul. The pain of that abandonment pierced at his immortal heart.
Druig couldn't comprehend why they had separated so long ago, but even more so, why without taking that burst of sunshine along.
"Where is she?" He beckoned with his eyes, not saying the demand out loud.
They explained the Deviants were returning to earth, and now they were scouring the lands to find each other after centuries apart. It was a calling and curse to find a solution to the problem, and perhaps their time to go home was one step away.
As they battled the Deviant, however, they sadly lost his brother Gilgamesh. At that moment, Druig felt desperate, an emotion he didn't feel for anyone else, to find Makkari as soon as possible.
After so long, he was going to be reunited with her, his long-lost other half. Maybe just maybe, he'd also be able to tell her the truth of how he felt...if she didn't already know it. Druig just prayed she felt the same. There was something deeper there between them, with their hidden glances, gentle touches, and unspoken connection.
Makkari was always running, searching for something, somewhere; he hoped she could finally discover what she desired in being with him. Druig would give her the world, his existence, if only she'd let him.
For Druig already knew what he yearned for above all else. It wasn't mind-control or power; it was seeing her smile again. She was his home. His peace. His light. His reason for every question he ever had or would have. She was everything and more in this eternal silence of life.
His beautiful, beautiful Makkari.

star light, eternally bright, please be with me tonight
Summary: Makkari makes a wish upon a star and hopes Druig will finally make it come true.
A/N: I cannot stop writing for these two! I hope you all enjoy the loving fluff that is Drukkari. ❥
Read on ao3
***
It's been a few days since the Emergence, loss of family, and saving the entire world.
It was all so complex, which then came to a screeching standstill of silence. The earth proceeds on now as though nothing has changed. Yet, so much has forever.
Makkari has a difficult time with that.
She feels joyous they achieved their new mission, yet sad all the same. Who they are, what they came to do, has all been a lie. They are pawns in a never ending game—they didn't even have a choice to play.
As she sits outside at Ajak's farmhouse, missing her leader, Makkari idly plays with the grass on the side of her blanket.
Makkari can feel how quiet the earth is, too quiet. It takes every fiber in Makkari's body not to simply run away.
Eventually, she lies down and gazes up at the beautiful night sky.
It's truly a wondrous sight—so magnificent. The stars scatter the black like speckles of magic that twinkle and shine. Makkari loves the stars; she always has. She closes her eyes to make a wish—a mundane act, but one she holds fondly within her heart.
For centuries, when Makkari was all alone, she'd do the same thing every night.
Star light
Eternally bright
Just make my wish come true tonight...
Did the wishes come true? Some. But not all.
Tonight, like so many other nights, her wish is about him.
Druig.
She hopes for a future that keeps them together, never separating again. Her heart could not take the loss of losing Druig. Being apart for centuries and feeling helpless as she observed Ikaris shoot Druig from the sky, it's too much.
The wind blows across her face, and Makkari shudders at the memories. Slowly she opens her lids.
A figure stands above her.
It being anyone else, Makkari would have dashed off, but she knows this face. Nothing to be scared of, just one to embrace.
"Hello, there lovely, Makkari," Druig addresses as he holds up a lantern, illuminating his attractive face. "You've been hiding in the tall grass."
"Yup, you found me."
"Easily," he shrugs. Druig then smiles slowly, a mischievous one she knows all too well. "So, was I your wish tonight?"
"No," she lies and swallows, thinking how incredible timing was.
"Liar," he signs back as he calls her bluff with a smirk. "Your wish to see my handsome face must've come true because alas, here I am."
"That wasn't my wish, and you're not that handsome," Makkari lies again but winks up at him.
"C'mon, don't be modest, beautiful. You've always thought me attractive." He's right. Makkari always has, but his ego doesn't need to hear that. "Don't dismiss the Greek God that stands before you now."
"Which one?"
"Um, some say I look like Apollo?"
Makkari smiles and shakes her head, "More like...Hades."
"Hey, I'll take it. Hades was quite powerful: Ruler of the Underworld and all." She grabs a pebble in the grass and playfully throws it at him, which he dodges easily, moving his finger back-and-forth. "Now, now." Then Druig peers around the field, "So we are sleeping outside tonight?"
"We?"
"There's always a we, isn't there?"
Always, she reflects to herself again, sometimes wondering if it would be easier not to feel this way at all, but instead, Makkari just shrugs sheepishly.
He pouts jokingly, and Makkari lightly flicks his shoe with her finger. Truthfully, she loves their spirited banter. It makes Makkari feel alive again, especially after what they've just gone through.
"Can I sit with you?" He finally asks.
"I thought you'd never ask."
Druig bows jokingly then joins her on the large flannel blanket. "You cold?"
"No, you?"
"Not anymore," he answers as he looks down at her. Druig clears his throat, "Okay then, if your wishes aren't going to be about my dashing jawline, then what will we wish for instead?"
"I suppose to discover what's the purpose of our existence now."
"Wow," Druig whistles and signs, "heavy stuff."
Makkari grins, "Just another day in the life of an Eternal."
Druig acknowledges her with an exasperated sigh, "Some would say it's a curse." He lies down next to her, propping himself on his elbow. "What would you say to that, Ms. Speedster?"
"Depends on the day."
"Fair enough," he signs, then adds, "But for the last few days, it does feel like a curse." Druig tousles his hair, which Makkari admires. "When I stop and recollect, I truly can't believe it. Did that all actually happen?"
"Unfortunately. And here I was hoping to go home to Olympia."
"Which doesn't even exist."
"We don't know that."
Druig simply shrugs, "I'm beginning to think we know nothing about anything."
That wasn't entirely true. Makkari knows without a doubt how she feels about the immortal lying next to her. To see him after centuries, and then to almost lose him…well, it puts so much in perspective. It's why she wished for him tonight, using the sky as a beacon of hope.
The fact of the matter is that Makkari loves Druig. She's always been in love with him. From the moment she opened her eyes and even after she shuts them. There won't ever be a day where she won't be in love.
She loves his witty attitude and the sense of humor he lets her share; it always makes her smile. It's in the way he pretends to be closed off from the world yet has the biggest heart of anyone. Druig's charm, flirty nature with her always brings her heart right out of her chest. But mostly, Druig understands her and she understands him.
The two balance each other magnificently.
Yet, he left her for so long, never looking back. However, Makkari wasn't mad then, and she isn't now. But she does wonder if he thought or missed her while in isolation with his colony of humans.
Is it the same now? Does he feel the same?
They never entirely spoke about the topic...leaving or feelings between them. They have just been themselves, and that was always enough.
Druig asked on the Domo before the Emergence if she had missed him—Makkari missed him every day while they were parted.
A tap on a shoulder brings her from her thoughts. "What's going on in that grand mind of yours?"
Makkari sighs, "Too many thoughts to say."
"Can you try to share at least one? Pretty please." He urges with a sweet, generous smile she loves. "I'd like to know."
Not wanting to hold back after everything they've been through, she silently agrees. Makkari doesn't know exactly where to start, so she begins with the most obvious, "I never answered your question."
"Which one? I have several."
"If I missed you."
Druig's eyes go wide as the facade drops, "Did you?"
"Every day."
She can see him swallow, and for the first time in forever, Druig looks a bit…nervous. "Truly?"
"Of course. Did you miss me?"
"Yes. I missed you, Makkari." Druig pauses and closes his eyes, "Every second, of every day, of every year, of every century. Always." He's not joking around with her as he regularly does—Druig expresses his truth; she can barely breathe as a result of it.
After a moment, Druig opens his eyes to look at her intensely. Over the centuries, she's caught him looking at her in this way, and as it did then, Makkari's heart starts to pound.
However, it's more than deep feelings she feels. Makkari doesn't want to hurt Druig for past choices, but reminiscing over their separation brings her pain, not to mention a sense of fear.
Makkari finds the courage to sign, "That didn't change anything, though, did it?"
He's quiet for a long moment, which feels like an hour goes by.
"Unfortunately, it didn't," Druig finally admits with what appears to be regret in his expression. "It should have—I'm so sorry, Makkari. I should've spent every day finding my way back to you." He bites his lip and shakes his head. "I got lost in my own way. After a while, I didn't know how to find my way back home."
"That's the real question, though, isn't it? What's home?"
Druig swiftly takes her hand, and it's so warm that it tingles upon her skin. He puts his hands in the lantern's light and signs, "You, Makkari. You're home to me."
Makkari can't stop her eyes from welling up, and as Druig scoots closer, she knows he can see her tears.
He intertwines their fingers, and Druig stares down at them. "Truthfully, I wished on so many stars while we were parted."
"What did you wish for?"
"You were always my wish. To the point, I even changed your star poem."
"To what?"
As he stares at her, Druig moves even closer. "Your light, eternally bright, please be with me tonight."
"Druig..." Makkari mouths. A tear falls down her cheek, and with Druig's other hand, he catches it tenderly.
"My beautiful, beautiful, Makkari." Druig lifts her hand and kisses the back of it. "I never meant to hurt you. Please know this. It's important to me that you know this."
"I know," she signs because she does know. Druig would never intentionally hurt her or anyone for that matter. "I promise I know."
"You were always with me. Every step along my way." He squeezes her hand, "I'm not who I am without you, Makkari."
She runs her fingers gently through his messy hair, and Druig looks at peace by her touch. "You were always there with me, too. In every face, I would run into. With every smile or kind deed. I thought of you, Druig."
He bites his lip at her confession. "Good. I'm glad you could still find me."
She nods, but there's still something there. To help distinguish her fear, Makkari has to ask, "So does that mean you won't leave me?"
Druig shakes his head immediately, "Never again. I'm not going anywhere without you."
"Good," Makkari signs with relief, then feels completely ready to cross the bridge of their relationship. "You're right, though. I did lie about something."
"Damn, so you weren't thinking about me after all, and just a look-alike named Doug?"
She laughs silently and shakes her head, "What am I going to do with you?"
"I could think of a few things," he flirts, wiggling his eyebrows up and down. But as they watch each other for a moment, Druig gets serious. "Okay, what did perfect Makkari lie about?"
Makkari takes a deep breath, "I did wish for you tonight."
He radiates happiness to the point his blue eyes briefly sparkle gold. With the glow from the lantern, Makkari notices his cheeks become rosy. "I knew it. You do think I'm handsome."
"After a millennia and a few centuries later, I guess it's hard to deny."
"My wonderful, Makkari," Druig giggles and moves his forehead to touch hers. Their hands are still caught together, and he nuzzles her closely. After a moment, he pulls back just enough so she can read his lips, "How about we finally stop denying what's always been there?"
Makkari gazes into his eyes; she can see every star in the universe within his soul.
Her response is in the way she touches his jaw softly and hovers her lips above his. Makkari has waited an eternity for this moment, and the way she feels his skin move as he swallows, Makkari knows he has, too.
They fill the tiny gap together as they move as one to connect the dots of love. Their lips touch like two worlds colliding, and Makkari feels nothing but sparks.
It was as if they were made for each other and each other alone.
The kiss starts slowly but gradually builds as their desire for one another is suddenly set free.
Druig cups her head in his palms as she lies down on the blanket beneath the enchanting stars. He hovers over her, so all she sees is his perfect silhouette in the moonlight. Druig makes her feel so safe, confident and loved.
Makkari's fingers glide upon his broad, muscular back, and she feels him tremble at her touch.
This is the most powerful feeling Makkari has ever felt. It all makes sense now. This is how it's supposed to be.
As he breaks the kiss to catch his breath, her thumb softly grazes his cheek. "I get it now."
She feels his warm rapid breath upon her skin. Druig wears a dazed yet peaceful expression while still staring at her lips.
"What my purpose is," she mouths.
Druig's nose slides up hers as he asks, "What's that, my love?"
"Loving you."
His answering smile is the most beautiful image she's ever witnessed in her long lifetime. "Our purpose." And with his fingers close to her heart, he signs, "I'll love you forever."
The wind settles, and they're left in each other's warm embrace. That's when Makkari and Druig see their wishing star dance across the sky.

To love an Eternal
Summary: Makkari's powers weaken by a sickness that affects Eternals. Surprisingly, Druig is paired up with Ikaris to find the cure. During their mission, Ikaris reveals a secret.
A/N: Funny enough, this story was inspired by Ikaris and Druig trading the Emerald Tablet for a box of Twinkies in the movie. I was always so intrigued by their dynamic, so it was fun to play within this story. Also, I love Druig and Makkari with my whole heart, so I hope this fic captures that deep eternal love. ❥

Over time, it happens to each one of them.
Their powers go wonky for unexplained reasons. It weakens them, and if they don't find a solution, they become nothing but mere mortals.
So when it happens to Makkari, Druig is already prepared to take action.
Ajak paces around the Domo then pauses to look up at the others. "Every time she starts to run, Makkari faints. I've asked Arishem, but like all of us who have faced this ailment, we have to come together to find a solution. It will make us stronger for what's to come in our future here on this planet."
"Where do we start?" Gilgamesh asks. "It seems inconsistent each time on how it affects."
"The humans should have connections from the earth to aid us," Sersi answers. "It's what helped my powers to be strengthened."
"That Elixir was incredible," Phastos replies. "I think with your help, Sersi, I can try to manipulate my powers to produce it. We just need ingredients."
"Unfortunately, that man has passed on," Sersi sadly affirms. "We'll have to find others like him."
The Eternals sit quietly for a moment, deep in thought.
"I'll go," Druig declares loudly. He doesn't often communicate to the lot of them when Makkari isn't around, but he'll do anything for this mission for her.
"What, are you going to mind-control humans to find answers?" Sprite laughs. "That should be amusing." He frowns at her. What an annoying little sister.
"There will be no mind-controlling," Ajak orders as she breaks into Sprite's laughter. "You know we will not interfere that way."
"I'll find another way," Druig responds. "I'll speak to the humans, follow their lead, until I discover the components."
"You being powerless to humans?" Kingo smirks from the background. "This I need to see."
And this is why Druig wants Makkari to be healthy and well. He needs her presence around so that the others are more tolerable.
Druig knows he has a closed-off, mischievous demeanor, so it's probably his fault, but Makkari's the only one who actually sees him.
"Enough," Ajak interrupts the bickering. She looks at Druig and kindly yet sternly asks, "You can handle this?"
Druig has been known for playing around with his powers, but he needs to be taken seriously with this matter. This mission needs to be trusted. "Yes."
"Okay then, you have my permission to go. Please make haste. Makkari grows weaker, and not even I can heal her."
"I'll be back promptly," Druig responds, then turns to leave the Domo.
"Wait."
He stops and sighs—of course, it wouldn't be that easy. Druig glances back at Ajak and shrugs questioningly.
His commander looks over at Ikaris, who has remained reserved the entire conversation. "You will go with Druig."
Ikaris immediately responds, "Yes, Ajak." Ever the perfect soldier.
Druig shakes his head. Unbelievable. "What, why? I don't need him."
"It's not up for debate. Go, help Makkari."
Yes, for Makkari. Even if stuck with the one Eternal Druig despised. And by the expression on Ikaris' face, Druig knows the soldier feels the same.

They go to several villages without obtaining a clue.
Now they have to cross the desert, the hot, miserable sandy desert. But Druig knows it's worth it for Makkari. He would do whatever was needed. The thought of not having her by his side hurts Druig so profoundly that it knocks the wind from his body.
Instead of thinking such painful thoughts, he decides to have some fun with Ikaris, who has yet to say a word to him.
"So Sersi, huh?" Ikaris looks over at him. When Ikaris says nothing, Druig urges further, "It's pretty obvious you're in love."
Ikaris just nods, not denying a thing.
Too easy.
Druig puts his arms on his waist and narrows his eyes, "Do I give you the brotherly talk not to break her heart, or I'll mind-control your ass to space?"
"You could never do that."
"Still," Druig mutters, "if I could, I would."
"I won't break her heart. I'd rather die first."
"Glad to hear it."
There's a short silence before Ikaris speaks. "Shall I now give you the same speech? Except with the threat of firing your body into the depths of the earth with my glance. Which, unlike you, can be done."
Confused, Druig frowns, "What are you talking about?"
Ikaris raises an eyebrow, “Makkari.”
"What about her?"
"The fact that you're in love with her."
Druig's mouth drops open in surprise, "I'm… wait, what makes you say that?"
Ikaris laughs surprisingly and opens his arms up wide, "Please. You never take your eyes off of her. I mean, they're always following her, even when she speeds off into the distance. You flirt extensively, to the point where my stomach often turns. You find every excuse to tease her. And let's not forget you light up when she touches you, which you don't do for anyone else."
It's the most words Ikaris has ever said to him, and Druig suddenly feels uncomfortable. He shuffles his feet back and forth in the sand, "We're best friends. That's all."
"Last I inspected, best friends don't look at each other that way."
"Maybe it's because she's my only friend."
"Rude."
"Like you care."
Ikaris shrugs as he continues walking, "You're right, I don't. It's not like we're exactly close. But I still don't think you're being honest."
"I don't need to tell you anything."
"Druig, it makes no difference to me," Ikaris responds. "I'm just saying be honest with yourself. Makkari may be your only friend, but we're scouring the lands to find ingredients to save her powers. Even when you know the others could help faster. You want to be the one to find it for her, and Ajak sent me to have your back."
"Which still frustrates me, by the way."
"Same here," Ikaris scoffs as he rolls his eyes. "But you didn't address what I said."
"Of course, I want to help her," Druig says. "Nothing matters more."
"Because you're in love with her."
"Because she's a valuable member of our team and family."
"Very true," Ikaris agrees, then beams, "And because you're in love with her."
"You know," Druig remarks as he runs his hand through his hair, "I regret starting this conversation. You're quite annoying when you speak. What will make you shut up?"
Ikaris pauses, then smirks, "Something sweet."
"Well, you already have Sersi. Isn't she sweet enough for you?"
"Yes," Ikaris grins, "but unfortunately, she's not here right now."
"Fine. One day, I'll give you something sweet. And who knows, maybe we'll even trade it for something important that will help my cause."
"Deal," Ikaris answers as he moves in front of Druig. "Now, let's go help your soulmate."
"I'm going to kill you," Druig groans as he shuffles behind. But however annoying Golden Boy is, he has to put up with it because Makkari is the only thought in his mind.
***
It takes a grueling two weeks, but they're able to find a healer in the middle of an abandoned temple who gives them the tablet of secrets and the ingredients needed to restore Makkari's abilities.
Druig is annoyed that Arishem couldn't just help them, but this must have been the task at hand.
To get back quickly, Ikaris flies them back to the Domo. Druig is pleased they make it back quickly, disregarding Ikaris' grip on him.
Luckily, the two came to their agreement within the desert, and Ikaris hasn't bothered him further.
Druig runs the bag into the Domo, and immediately, Phastos and Sersi get to work.
Ajak pats Druig's back, "I'm proud of you."
He wants to say something sarcastic, but the relief in what they found brings a calming side out of him. "Thank you."
"Good work, you two," Gilgamesh exclaims as he claps his hands. "I had every faith in you."
Even though he feels embarrassed, Druig smiles, "Thank you, Gil."
"I'm just surprised you and Ikaris didn't rip each other to shreds in the process," Kingo laughs as he raises both eyebrows.
"It was a close call, but we had work to do," Druig declares as he looks at Golden Boy. Ikaris turns his gaze from Sersi to nod at Druig.
As he looks around at the Eternals, Druig remembers the mission. Makkari.
"How is she?" He asks Ajak in a desperate tone.
"Weak," She replies solemnly. "Thena is with her now. Makkari sleeps." Ajak sighs deeply, "I'm glad you're back. I don't know how much time was left."
The words rip into Druig's heart. It hasn't been much time, but he looks at Phastos and Sersi, "When will it be done?"
Phastos looks to Sersi, who acknowledges, "Soon."
"I need to see her," Druig demands, as he ignores Ikaris' stare from across the room.
"Go, she'll be happy you're there," his commander replies as she squeezes his arm gently. "We'll bring the cure when it's ready."
Before giving it another moment, Druig lets his heart lead the way.
***
Makkari is sleeping in her room on the Domo.
Truthfully, it pains Druig to see Makkari this way. She's always so full of light and energy. Now she's weak and still, as sweat collects on her beautiful skin.
Thena, the strong warrior, holds Makkari's hand gently, and he knows Thena is giving Makkari strength.
"How is she?" He asks quietly.
"The same," Thena answers, not looking up. "If you're back, I take it as the mission being successful."
"Yes, we found what we were searching for, and the creators will be done soon. Hopefully having enough for when this happens again."
"Good," Thena says. "Good."
Makkari's body twitches gently, and her head turns to where Druig is standing in the doorway.
"I think she was waiting for you," Thena declares in that tone of hers.
The words send a shiver down Druig's spine, but he's afraid to move. He's afraid to be vulnerable.
Thena now looks up at him and motions with her head, "Come."
Druig's feet move at their own accord.
The warrior stands up and places Makkari's feverish hand into his own, which leaves a spark of electricity.
Druig sits and takes in the moment. He feels relief they found a cure and is grateful this won't be the end of their memories together.
When he remembers Thena, he peers up, but she's already gone.
As he stares back down, Druig whispers, "Makkari, can you feel that I'm here?"
When she squeezes his hand, Druig can't stop his tears or the beating of his heart.
"Because you're in love with her."
Ikaris' words swirl in Druig's mind, not for the first time. Is he in love with Makkari?
He loves being around her. He loves teasing her. He loves being mischievous with their powers together. But is he in love?
Before he's lost in those thoughts, a hand touches his shoulder.
Druig looks up and sees Sprite with a vial. "The Elixir," she says with a kind smile.
He takes it, and she leaves—probably by command from Ajak, which gives Druig a sense of relief.
Gently, he holds up Makkari's head, and she stirs. Luckily, she opens her mouth, and slowly, Druig pours in the Elixir.
Makkari coughs once, but as Druig softly strokes her cheek, she swallows it down.
Druig could lie her back down on the bed, but instead, he holds her in his arms, cradling her head. He can't look away from her lovely face.
It seems like a lifetime for an Eternal, but finally, Makkari opens her eyes.
Her brown eyes search his face, and as they gaze at one another, Druig and Makkari connect in their way silently.
As Makkari's health restores, her face glows once more. And when she smiles up at him, Druig knows Ikaris was right.
Druig is in love with Makkari.
He has loved her from the beginning, and Druig knows he'll love her till the end of time.
Everything is different and yet the same with this revelation.
He bends down to touch his forehead to hers, "Welcome back, my beautiful, beautiful, Makkari."
And the love within their embrace is the answer to his purpose.
***
After a millennium and a few centuries later, they're all, minus some, back on the Domo for another mission to save the humans.
When Druig sees Ikaris holding the Emerald Tablet, he sees his opportunity. Druig grabs the box and walks over.
Ikaris looks at him and then the box of Twinkies. They don't say a word; this agreement was made long ago. And Druig was right—the trade would benefit his cause.
He takes the Tablet and goes to talk to his beloved.
