1. the oh hellos - soap. here representing the folk part of my playlist, filling in for the crane wives and of monsters and men. this song is a comfort. it's a midday drive on a long empty road with the windows open. it's dandelions breaking through the pavement in spring. basically, if you want a song telling you you're loved, look no further.

2. mother mother - until it doesn't hurt. hello fellow shut-ins! did you just discover you haven't seen the light of day for three days? me too! and this song is just the thing to make us feel better about it. careful, side effects may include: feeling like you're in a kick-ass movie about revenge, getting goosebumps from the chorus, being inspired to write a new character. ok, that last one may just be me. but the song is still pretty good.

3. the mountain goats - sax rohmer 1, here representing the lo-fi end of the spectrum. i have recommended tallahassee the album on this blog twice already, so today we're picking heretic pride. as a wise youtube comment once said, "the affection of no creature is left unrepresented in their songs" - this one is for those of us gritting their teeth through every day of all of this.

4. fall out boy - headfirst slide into cooperstown on a bad bet. time for a little guilty pleasure! i was torn between this and the killers or panic at the disco. the battle has been won by this beautiful earworm. perfect fit for when you need the music to just wash over you and drown out the rest.

5. daughter - run. and the final one, here for all the other sad songs, having won over placebo, amigo the devil and florence of florence and the machine. i dare you to imagine your otp to this one - it's hard not to!)) good pick for those evenings when you need a singer to cry with you.

there's something to be said about gale telling peeta that katniss will choose the person she can't survive without - a sentiment that katniss notices lacks any mention of love or comfort or affection, only partnership and practicality. because survival is the basis of gale and katniss's relationship - their relationship is the product of an oppressive regime where so many people starve and die and suffer. they built a partnership out of pragmatic necessity - friendship and affection and yes, even love, did spring from that, but nevertheless, survival was the foundation for them, and the fact that the majority of their dynamic is spent in the woods and this is the only place gale sees her happy is symbolic of that.

but her relationship with peeta is extremely different. he gives her laughter and comfort and joy no matter where they are. he balances out the temperamental and volatile nature (a characteristic she shares with gale as a result of their conditions) with peacefulness and an appreciation for beauty and goodness. they have a trust and camaraderie and friendship that extends far beyond the need for survival, a bond that connects them beyond merely the need to stay alive and protect their loved ones. it is with peeta that she truly lives and laughs and loves and betters herself. peeta notices and brings out the most wonderful parts of her cold, dispassionate exterior (mockingjay, suzanne collins), gives her an appreciation for beauty in life (dandelion in the spring, the pearl on the beach, etc). he's the calmness and peacefulness that she needs to truly live and feel free and safe, while gale is violence and storms and outbursts (which she may agree with, but his tendencies to choose violence don't satisfy katniss's emotional needs in a relationship like peeta does).

to gale and katniss, love and relationships and friendships and human connection come second to practical concerns and the mere desire to simply not die. for peeta and katniss, love and life are about far more than just survival, which is why they share an emotionally charged connection that's stronger than what gale and katniss have.

002 Starling? (please, because manners)

How I feel about this character

I think Starling is neat! He is interesting to me because he’s a spring cat, and instead of being so super confident in his abilities and such, he is just very soft and concerned about everything. There aren’t too many spring cats that are genuinely HAPPY to be spring cats, and Starling is one of the few that is. It’s nice to see someone in the tribe who is pleased to have the season that they do, and he’s SO WORRIED about doing it right. :c  He is nice and caring and soft. Good Boy. 

All the people I ship romantically with this character:

I don’t think there are any cats in his age range exactly that I KNOW anything about. The closest are Dandelionpaw, Hollow, and Moth (who is an NPC currently) so... it’s hard to say really. I think him and Dandelionpaw could be cute, in a way. She’s very sweet and outgoing, very good with her younger siblings and very family-oriented it seems, so I think that they could vibe that way for sure! 

My non-romantic OTP for this character:

Again, for the same reason it’s hard to say because I honestly haven’t seen him interact with many characters his OWN age, but for the same reasons above I think him and Dandelion could make just as good friends as romantic partners! They can have a little babysitter’s club, it’ll be cute.  Another one I guess would be an older spring-cat to learn and bond with -- maybe Feather Mist or Tiger Breeze? But that’s almost too easy -- maybe... Butterfly? Butterfly I think will see one day all the cats that love and care about her, and Starling is pretty much at the TOP of that list in some respects. He’s very very concerned about her and cares so much, and protects them as much as he can. They were both his first babies, but I can see a bond developing a little stronger with Butterfly than with Firefly, for some reason. 

My unpopular opinion about this character:

Hmm. Unpopular opinion: Starling needs to worry less about his kiddos. I think he’s an anxious boy and it probably consumes him way more than it should. 

My cross-clan ship:

Starling and Milkpaw would be cute simply because they are both lovely cute boys who Do Their Best.

A headcanon fact:

Starling has super sensitive whiskers, which makes raising kits tough because kits ALWAYS go for the whiskers - but he puts up with it because he loves them all. :)

How I feel about this character                                                                                 I think Katniss is very complex and grows so much throughout the trilogy.  She is a spark to show how one person can bring about tremendous change, even when that is not what they are looking to do. It’s interesting, because to a degree she is unlikable, but you can’t help but love her spirit.  And when she loves, she loves fiercely.

All the people I ship romantically with this character                               Peeta, only Peeta of course.  He is her “dandelion in the spring.”

My non-romantic OTP for this character                                              Haymitch, probably.  They understand each other because they are so alike.  Another possibility I like is Johanna.  Totally different personalities, that make for a very interesting friendship.

My unpopular opinion about this character                                                          I think in the end she was able to forgive Gale.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.                                                                                                           Being the romantic that I am....I wish we could have seen her toasting and wedding with Peeta.
