Day 1
Beauty mask
To make my mask I started with brainstorming some ideas about the possible techniques and what could be used to make it.
Tumblr media
After having decided that I will make something that resembles one of the now commonly used facemasks I went on prototyping and cutting some material.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the first few cases I cut the paper in a way that would show me how to bend it into place, this didn't allow me to keep it that way so I soon changed technique. I didn't feel like using glue in this process. My goal soon became the "invention" of a facemask origami. Even though it probably already exists I never searched online for it, it felt like self-betrayal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After getting the gist of the folding everything became simpler, two more tries and I finally folded the perfect fit. What is left to do is the drawing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the decorating of the mask I used a hexagon with a pattern that I cut off the cardboard box from previous prototypes, that is the masks's filter. Around it I used letters and characters to represent the human fight against the virus that is creeping from all the opposing sides. I chose blue for the virus to have a high contrast to the brown of the cardboard.

@ashleyhdoughty had me at feminist flexagon, but the box is icing on the artist book cake. ・・・ 12.05.19 : I love it when I have a sudden idea and it actually works out! I’m getting ready it ship my piece “Procreation : Push + Pull” to New Orleans for the CBAA conference juried show. I really wanted to make a box for the piece, but making one from book board would have taken quite a while and would involve a lot of glue. Then I wondered if there was a way to make a hexagon box using origami. And… Of course there is! I found a tutorial on YouTube, made some drafts, took measurements, and constructed a box from this beautiful Japanese paper I got from @hiromipaper in Los Angeles. The hardest part was cutting perfect squares to make the base and the lid; the actual folding was much easier! 😁🎁🌸 #create #diy #inspiration #art #design #graphicdesign #illustration #bookarts #origami #papercraft #moveablebooks #bookbinding #trialanderror https://www.instagram.com/p/CBTElFcAfRA/?igshid=iwg1tkpfp42l

The video tutorials to these Self-Closing Origami Twist Boxes are out: I split them up into two videos:
Square Version Self-Closing Origami Twist Box Tutorial: https://youtu.be/2rkm5m57JaE | Hexagonal Version Self-Closing Origami Twist Box Tutorial: https://youtu.be/1nvLarKmfZY
I do advise you that these are not beginner origami boxes. The closing mechanism is not what makes this design the most challenging. Rather it’s the twist fold closing mechanism of the bottom of the box, which needs to be inside while closing the tube. As the box is rather small and long, it is difficult to reach. If you don’t have much experience with this, you should try to experiment with regular twist fold origami boxes first.
You can find all the written information here.
Otherwise, have fun and a great weekend!

How Handmade Stationery Has Changed Our Daily Lives
Making paper by hand in India is a traditional art that has been passed down through the generations by craftsmen. Though these are now almost extinct, the traditional method of handmade papermaking is still found in various parts of India where the tribe had initially settled down. Handmade Paper is a beautiful example of recycled work. Apart from its uses and classy look, it is a total eco-friendly option with innumerable utilitarian uses. The advantages of using handmade craft paper are that it has greater tensile, bursting tearing, and double-fold strength compared to conventional paper. Here are the handmade stationary products used in our daily lives and mentioned below are different uses & benefits of handmade paper.
Tumblr media
Handmade Notebooks are available in intricate designs and colours with various shapes and sizes and the different texturized element in it gives a very unique look. They are light and easy to carry making them popular. These captivating notebooks and the striking ethnic look on these paper notebooks are a delight to write on. The handmade journals with a refillable lock with handmade sketch papers and the traditional covers entice anyone to pick them up. Handmade craft paper is used for making cards. Whether a nice greeting has to be sent or a small gift card to be attached to a gracefully wrapped gift, the handcraft papers come really handy. Even gifts now come in paper gift boxes where the hassle or time to wrap a gift is to be avoided. When it comes to gifting, even the handmade paper boxes for chocolates and pastries in handmade boxes and pens and other stationery makes it exquisite. Come to think of it the range of handmade paper stationery consists of beautifully Handcrafted Pen Holders, Slip Pads, Complete homemade stationery Sets, Letterheads, Visiting Cards is just endless
Tumblr media
Let us catch a glimpse of Handmade paper sheets that also has a rich texture, making them perfect for drawing, writing, binding into books, rubber stamping, and much more. When we look around we just find so many things and items which are just made of texture handmade paper sheets and make life really simple and quickly productive. We listed a few personal items above and now if we look at the office use, one can find extensive usage of handmade storage boxes for office stationery or in shops where jewellery is sold. The decorated paper cube box or the custom storage paper box to fit in your sheets required for printing are just everywhere around the corner. Imagining a world without them just seems impossible. Again on the personal front, we have the Origami Hexagonal Gift Box or boxes where watches are custom packed in these. There are these cubical DIY waste bins too made out of handmade paper with unique texture.
Tumblr media
Handmade paper and its various application in everyday modern living such as handmade paper stationery have become upmarket and classy. Rich colours, beautiful textures, and its edges make it stand out differently. A loving and caring process is involved and the use of unique materials like coffee husk, corn husk, banana fiber, and cotton rags each of which has a particular characteristic while designing the hand crafted paper. Handmade printed paper sheets can be embellished with flower petals, jute, wool, grass, and straw which makes it more of an art. As human kind progresses, one can find more and more usage of such products and with a lot of innovation in making. The objective is to save our earth, decrease any wastage and provide a classic, exotic, and cost-friendly hand made stationery box, paper and products.

some quarantine origami! Three of Tomoko Fuse’s hexagonal boxes with six-petal lids each between 1.75-3inches in diameter. to my delight these three boxes actually nested inside one another. I would 100% recommend Tomoko Fuse’s Origami Boxes. if you are looking for a fun origami book to make cute lil’ boxes; for all of us stuck at home, this book is on hoopla, and overdrive: if your library subscribes to either of these services you can snag a copy with your library sign in to read on your computer.

Blog 3: Design Process Redesign
Tumblr media
In this assignment, we were instructed to re-create the Design Thinking hexagon process, that all of us designers have seen many times.
For myself, I learn better visually, so if there are illustrations or diagrams, I not only can comprehend something easier, but I am also able to remember it longer. I decided to make a comic strip out of the Design Thinking process, making the illustrations give a meaning behind each step.
Empathize: I have two hands shaking. This represents a meeting with the client in person. Having a conversation, and understanding where they are coming from, and what their story is.
Define: A detective that is on the case to solve the client's problem.
Ideate: Something that is drilled into our brains from the beginning. Drawing thumbnails of ideas, and getting it all down on paper.
Prototype: A origami bird, which represents our drafts, and different versions we go through, in order to get out all the kinks of our designs.
Test: A crash test dummy, which represents the trial and error way of design. We make something that checks all the client's boxes, but sometimes it doesn't work out, and we need to start back at the beginning.

Twist Lock Origami Boxes
I devoted the past week to these beautiful pleated origami boxes. They look just like the regular Twist Boxes you know from Tomoko Fuse, but are actually folded completely differently.
The Hexagonal version of this box was discovered in 2004 by Thomas Hull, and possibly by Francesco Decio in 2000.
In my article I added a source that links to the diagram and created specifically for this project polygon templates to help you create similar looking boxes. Why don’t you give it a try?
