So, we talk a lot about Quarry headcanons and what could have been on the Brainrot Discord server that Kat made and one of the things I keep thinking about is how they gave (at least some of) the characters these sets of skills that never really impact gameplay, and I think it would be really cool if they did. Like, if there was more variety in who could be sent on which path. Switching Kaitlyn to the Hackett house path with Laura and Ryan to the scrapyard with Dylan being a popular one for fanfic, but also, idk, maybe Dylan won't let Ryan go without him so he ends up on the Hackett house path too? Maybe Abi steps up to go with Kaitlyn to the scrapyard and has to figure out the crane even though it's way out of her skillset, maybe Emma and Jacob can actually come back and link up with the rest of the gang instead of being stuck out in the woods for so long, stuff like that.
I'm just thinking about what their skills might be and how that might impact the game. Also keep in mind that if the character you most need for a task ends up up dead before that task comes along, it's going to be carnage for everyone else, which would up the replay value significantly IMO.
Kaitlyn: Shooting. She's a MUCH better shot than Ryan, if we can believe the Shooting Stars scoreboard (four of the actual children attending the camp score higher than him), but we never see that in the game? What if the aiming mechanism was actually different between different characters? What if there were shots you could make more easily as Kaitlyn, that were harder to pull off as Ryan?
Ryan: Agility. Guy does a lot of running and jumping, what if there were timed segments that were easier to complete as Ryan within the allotted time, or else something consequential happened? Good luck if you ended up plodding along with Jacob instead, now Abi and Nick are both mauled and turning, or something like that.
Dylan: Tech. Dylan's the physics nerd who slays at the crane game. What if you could bring him to the Hackett house and he could figure out the electric circuit puzzle in no time, but that meant someone else had to help Kaitlyn in the scrapyard? Maybe Ryan can still save Jacob without him but he takes too much time and the Hacketts catch you and pick off one of your party.
Jacob: Strength. Jakey's probably the buffest of the dudes, so maybe there are times you need a pair of strong arms or legs and Jacob's the only one who can come through. They also show us him picking locks but he never does that in an impactful situation, so maybe he'd have a lesser talent for that as well.
Abi: Stealth. Okay, so Abi runs and hides? Maybe she's awesome at hiding, then? Maybe she can get through parts of the game undiscovered by the werewolves that other characters can't. Maybe her being short AF means she can fit into hiding spots that you can't cram the leggy bois like Dylan and Nick into.
Emma: Observation. Emma's always watching and analyzing everyone's behavior and documenting things on her phone. Maybe she can find evidence or tarot cards others can't, or put pieces of the mystery together in ways no one else thinks of. Emma's a badass in the game, but it would be cool to see her 'documentarian' side come in handy prior to the credits rolling, too.
Nick: Climbing. I completely made this up because we don't get to see Nick do much besides try to pull his crush, suck face on a dare with Emma, and get mauled, but we do know he takes kids through the ropes course based on his dialogue with Abi, plus he's tall so he's got long arms and legs! Maybe he's the aerial expert. Maybe he can scale fences and get important items down from trees. Maybe he can climb up and free other characters who get stuck in those snare traps. (Obviously this assumes someone else can be the Designated Werewolf Victim, which I also think would improve the game.)
This also assumes Laura and Max keep their current roles, but I'd be up for that to be changeable too. It's not that I necessarily want a higher number of choices available, I just want the choices we can make to actually impact the gameplay and story arc more! Anyway, that's my Quarry ramble for the day (unless I come up with another one). Anyone else have thoughts?

It's always trauma o'clock somewhere! Especially for these kids who had to come home and lie about why they returned from the camp a day later. They hardly had a chance to unpack the recent trauma, but I think this is how the HQ massacre affected their lives afterwards.
Jacob, as many others, chose a half-truth and told his parents that some jerk broke the car to stay with his girlfriend. He omitted the part where that jerk was him. Couldn't bear that guilt.
He was a decent swimmer and wanted to maybe take it professionally, but the next time he found himself at the pool, he completely froze at the signal. He never dived in that day. He stared at the blue-tiled water, and he saw the chains and the overblown body.
He found Emma on Instagram and, for a while, he was checking it obsessively, hoping she'd talk about what happened or mention it in some way, any way. He wanted to stop being so alone in knowing the truth and living with it. Emma never did that.
Emma, actually, fell silent for almost 2 months after her return. She'd speak the bare minimum, but never an actual conversation, never a joke. The happy, bubbly girl simply wasn't there. Her parents even took her to a teen therapist with little to no result.
Emma had stopped streaming for a while, although she still kept her Insta. One time she almost posted a selfie from that day, before the nightfall. Almost.
Some time later, she set up a really non-Emma-esque live stream. She was sitting in silence, looking at the sunset, the comment section was overflowing, and sometimes Emma would pick a question to answer from there. Many thought she was doing some sort of spiritual cleanse. She only spoke without a prompt for the first time when she saw Abi joining the stream.
For Abi, it was nightmares. That simple, that efficient. Dark forests, mist, dangerous beasts lurking around. What else to screw with the sleep of a sweet, tender person?
Movies on the background didn't help. Music didn't help. Drawing made everything worse, because in every shape, form, and shadow, beasts were lurking. Whenever she'd pick up a pencil to sketch, she left monsters on the paper. Wherever she looked, she saw monsters. Monsters always looked just a little bit like Nick.
It went on until the night she looked Emma up on Insta and, by pure coincidence, got to her live stream.
Nick blocked most of it out. There wasn't much to remember, but some memories still bled through.
He became the snack guy, the guy who always had something to chew on. It was a small quirk nobody was really paying attention to, but its trail led back to the only thing he did remember: hunger.
Whenever he emailed, Abi never replied.
Ryan, on the contrary, was replying to and receiving a LOT of emails. He was the one to send all the evidence to the Bizarre Yet Bonafide studio, and he also kept in touch with a few other Hacketteers, including Kaitlyn and Dylan.
Another thing he did is meticulously go through all his favorite media (TV & films mostly) and unbooked/deleted everything that dealt with guns being shot or vivid descriptions of wild animals (or their victims). This took him several hard days, but he finally felt safer when he did it.
He only watched something new if Dylan watched it first and gave him an okay.
Dylan, as opposed to Ryan, consumed horror content like his life depended on it. At some point, he even had a special notepad with details of how to defeat or protect yourself from all supernatural dangers and their mother. He kept this notepad on him at all times and often re-read it.
Getting used to not having a hand was slightly easier than he expected. What wasn't easy? That one time when his dad asked him to bring him sth to work. His father, a crane conductor on a construction site, did not expect his grown son to have a full-blown panic attack over a pb&j.
On the other hand (his joke, not mine), he got really close with Ryan and Kat, and they were planning a getaway together.
Kaitlyn was the one to propose the getaway. Despite the general total mindfuck, she managed to keep a cool head on the night of, and, surprisingly, it didn't cost her a hand and a leg (her joke, not mine!)
Thus, she became a healer. Reaching out, making sure. Helping. She didn't make it her sacred goal to help all others, but she tried, and that's what counts.
She kept tabs on Jacob especially. She knew he'd never ask for help. He didn't have to ask. That's what best friends are for.
Max never met any of those people, except Emma. That one time he bit his lip and nearly puked because he thought he remembered the taste of blood.
He topped his steak-cooking up to inventing the well-well-well-done steak without any possibility of there being blood.
Mostly, he just wasn't sure if he knew his own nature anymore. As the whole night was blocked in his mind, he could only trust Laura. And he did. The fact that she looked at him even more lovingly than before told him that if she trusts him, if she loves him, than it's okay.
Laura did trust him and loved him. But she also ran a gazillion of drills per week and kept at least two take-and-run bags in the house, and one in a special place. Clothes, flashlights, crackers, compass, you name it. She was an amateur that last time. Now she was ready for anything.
She took up running as well. She continued with vet studies. Even years after, the first thought that sprung to her mind if someone was butten by an animal was: CUT THE FUCKING LIMB.
Max kept her grounded with his laugh and his honest, sincere warmth. She could have gone really cold inside if it wasn't for him.

OKAY BUT LIKE JACOB AND EMMA MAKE ME CRAZY they aren't even my favourite characters but oh my god those two
like both of them are wrong (on some level stay with me i love jacob but i ain't defending him) but also EMMA WAS RIGHT
on the surface it's like. they get together, classic summer camp thing, they break up, summer's over, they're supposed to move on, emma set that expectation but jacob couldn't let go. if summer lasts one more night, maybe he can convince her to go long distance, so he sabotages the car and he tries so hard to change her mind
but emma's mind won't be changed. and she knows what jacob is like, she's been with him all summer, and she knows how much something like her making out with another guy at the firepit will upset him. and the fact that it's KAITLYN, jacob's childhood friend, who gives her the room for this, it shows that kaitlyn knows that this is the only way as well. dylan's off the table, ryan just made out with someone else, the only real option is nick. he's jacob's best friend, her best friend's crush, that's the perfect choice. it's so calculated
and yet when they go to the docks, emma can't help but flirt a little more, like it's nature for her, she's spent so long with jacob that it's almost secondhand. and, in that one cutscene, she reveals that she still likes him but that she's still ending it. it was never that she didn't like him, it was just that she wanted it to be contained to summer, she wanted him to move past her, and for her to be able to move past him
we dig a little deeper. she says they were toxic but why is that? well, jacob has pretty clear abandonment issues or at least insecurity, and emma is an actress, she admits that she puts on a performance to make people happy. and while these things may sound unrelated as first, imagine that in play. a guy who clings onto any sign of affection, who needs so desperately to be seen, and a girl whose confidence comes from a place of not wanting to see other people sad.
she only flirted with jacob at the docks because he was crying. and he latched onto that immediately. she knows what he's like, she's been with him all summer. she knows about these issues and he doesn't know hers. he doesn't know emma at her core but was so willing to open himself up at the slightest affection
it's not even just that emma wants to avoid upsetting jacob when their potential long distance relationship goes sour, it's that she doesn't want to have to keep performing to a guy she really cares about, and because he would be exhausting to her. they're not toxic because they tear each other apart, it's that they wear each other down.
and nick being the one that she kissed, jacob's best friend at camp besides kaitlyn, it really plays into his issues. the betrayal, his ex kissing his best friend. but she knows that's the best way to try cut him off and she just can't help herself and it's SO MESSY
she just has to believe that abi will understand, or her performance will cave. how funny is that she only seems to really care about upsetting abi
anyway jacob insane for sabotaging a car and emma girlfail for vlogging

some more random rylan headcanons
few things make dylan gasp and tremble as quickly as ryan kissing his fingertips
likewise, touch or kiss the back of ryan's neck and his knees instantly start to shake
why yes, dylan does like to start as many mornings as possible kissing each of ryan's moles. ryan usually stops him halfway through because he's still sleepy and needs his coffee, but he definitely loves it more than he lets on
ryan does become an animator, working freelance for commission or contracted out for companies. he does both traditional and 3d animation
i can't decide with dylan fully, but i think he ends up being a physics professor that does research, so while he does teach a small number of classes, he does a lot grant-funded research into quantum physics, too. but he 100%, totally, runs an online radio station on the side.
ryan shoulders a lot of guilt early on about cutting off dylan's hand. dylan reassures him it's okay, but lets ryan do a lot of things early on in their relationship to make him feel better. eventually, he becomes fully independent and adjusted and ryan learns to process the guilt and see dylan and their relationship holistically, including that tragic event, but not letting it fully consume them
they both have very sensitive nipples. yes, i said what i said.
ryan's the hairier of the two and dylan absolutely loves the fluff and fuzz, from his chest and swimmer's abs to his happy trail to everywhere. dylan's not completely bare, mind you, but he only gets a few hairs between his pecs and a light happy trail.
dylan does teach ryan a bit about audio engineering and mixing, especially early on in ryan's career when he's making his own animations solo and building a portfolio. and yes, it does lead to some 'roleplaying' of a certain variety because those two just cannot help themselves
ryan drives a truck, dylan rides a sedan for a while until it craps out and then he gets a used jeep that lasts for fucking ever. they obviously carpool pretty much everywhere together but end up becoming the duo to call when you need help hauling things/moving
dylan isn't that good at swimming, but ryan patiently teaches him. it totally leads to them skinny dipping at some random lake late at night while on a road trip one time and making out on the beach after. and...get the cops called on them. they manage to make it out of there before the police arrive, though.
dylan is a bit more spiritual of the two. after they've experienced hackett's quarry, they both believe in the supernatural to some extent. but dylan believes a bit in things like past lives and reincarnation and intertwined destinies and no he doesn't believe that spirituality and science are mutually exclusive, thank you very much. ryan doesn't have strong opinions one way or another, but he doesn't belittle or deny dylan's beliefs. and he will sit patently with him when they get tarot card readings done. neither of them belong to or are part of an organized religion, but they do accompany ryan's grandparents (and sara) to some church festivities
ryan grows out a beard after a little while and oh, oh boy does dylan love it. constantly nuzzling it and running his hand through it. he just loves loves loves it so much, the texture tickling that sweet spot in his brain. he loves the beard burns he gets on his thighs sometimes, too.
they adopt another kitty after living together for a couple years. ryan names it, and, completely unprompted, names it schrodinger jr. schrodinger absolutely loves junior, much to their relief and surprise.
dylan makes music on the side pretty often. most he uploads on soundcloud, but some he makes specifically and only for ryan's ears. sometimes dylan will come home and hear ryan playing those special tunes throughout the house. it always makes something warm and bubbly fill up dylan's heart.
when the hacketters have a movie night, they are absolutely almost always in each other's laps

🌸The boys and their aftercare🌸
AN: I KINDA WROTE SOME FLUFF~ I know I pretty much only write smut, but this has been in my drafts for a bit and I’m clearing it out. So here it is! I also remembered Max this time! I hope you enjoy💕 I tried to be as Gender neutral as possible!
Tumblr media
Ryan
Giving: Ryan will run you a nice hot bath. He sits on the edge he of the tub and throws in a bath bomb. Chuckling silently to himself at how excited you get at the fizzing ball. Once the water is at a desired temperature, he slips into the bath with you. He squeezes your favorite shampoo into his hand, warming it up before lathering your hair in it. All while talking to you about how your day has been. He loves to listen to your sweet voice. But if you’re not one to talk, that’s okay too! He’s more than happy to do the talking for you. Or just sit in a comfortable silence as he bathes you. Receiving: He absolutely loves when you take care of the scratches on his back. Sometimes you dig enough to break skin. Leaving splotches of red across his back. He hisses as you take a warm towel to his back. After you wipe off the blood, you follow it up with dabs of alcohol to the cuts. “Ouch!” He pouts as he slouches forward, not at all enjoying the cleaning process. You move to the front of his chest now. Doing the same process all over again. “Ow-“ you close his mouth before he can finish his word, “I haven’t even touched you yet.” His cheeks heat up a bit in embarrassment, “oh, sorry.”
Tumblr media
Nick
Giving: He will tell you to keep lying down and not to move and inch. You wince are the cold lotion being applied to your back. “Sorry, should’ve warmed it up in my hand before.” He massages the lotion into your aching and sore muscles. Making sure to pay extra attention to every single mark he left, and kiss it. Letting you know that you’re all his, and he loves you. He’ll massage every inch of your body, from the tips of your fingers, to the pads of your toes. He wants to give as much relaxation as possible. Receiving: Loves the showers afterwards with you. You are lathering up his chest in soap. He grips your wrist, staring down at you with a different sparkle in his brown eyes. He leans down and places a soft kiss to your lips. Not at all the same type of kiss that you had shared an hour ago, but one still full of love and admiration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jacob
Giving: he’ll get you your favorite ice cream and throw up a movie while in bed. He’s happy to have your head on his broad chest as you slowly drift off into sleep. He is definitely the type to run his fingers through your hair. Even give you a little scalp massage while he’s at it. He’ll brush your hair, tie it up, style it for the night, anything you want. Receiving: Likes communication. He wants to know what you liked or didn’t like. He also really likes to be told how valued he is. He can get insecure sometimes, so when you tell him how much he means to you, he almost cries. And that’s okay! Crying is healthy. He beats himself up too much and would love for you to be his anchor. He absolutely loves to talk and loves that he can be his most vulnerable self.
Tumblr media
Dylan
Giving: He sometimes struggles to go through the entire night time routine, but he does what he remembers. He will start with a quick shower, still holding you close under the warm water. Peppering kisses all over your face until you are pruny and beg him to stop. Next is your cleanser and face masks. He just wants you to sit there and be pretty. Just talk him through it and he’ll get the hang of it! Once that’s done he’ll sit you up in front of him and brush your hair. Making sure to detangle it as gently as possible. Receiving: Loves to hear you sing. Will ask you to serenade him whether you can sing or not. He’ll even make a playlist for you both to cuddle up and listen to together. And by listen to, I mean he’ll listen to you sing every single word off key and fall in love with you even more every time.
Tumblr media
Max
Giving: He makes/brings you your favorite snack as well as share a water bottle with you. He wants you to stay hydrated at all times. “Hydrate or diedrate,” he always says. He has a stash of your favorite snacks under the bed so Laura won’t eat them all from you. Or if you’d like, he’ll ask you to join him in cooking dinner. Of course you don’t have to do anything, he just likes your company. Receiving: He isn’t a very complex man. He loves to just lie in bed and cuddle afterwards. He loves the savor the moments where your legs are overlapping his and your face buried into his neck. Give him little kisses every now and then and he’ll be over the moon.

Here at GQ, we first met Chalamet six years ago, just as the rest of the world was also discovering it had developed a thirst that could only be quenched by this strange new creature—the sensitive and beguiling mop-haired kid who played Elio in Call Me by Your Name. Women wanted him…and wanted to be him. Men, the same. It was confusing and awesome; a breakout moment of a kind we haven’t seen since DiCaprio, or maybe more like Brando and Dean.
For that first cover, we photographed Chalamet during a January snowstorm (one so severe it became known as a “bomb cyclone”) in a decrepit old mansion just outside of New York City. When Chalamet’s lips started turning blue as he shivered for Ryan McGinley’s camera in a freezing-cold bathtub wearing only spring’s best lightweight, stone-colored double denim, I remember telling myself: Don’t kill Timothée Chalamet. The world will never forgive you. He survived. He thrived. He lost the Oscar. He won our hearts.
In 2020, in the depths of the pandemic, we returned to Chalamet. He was hiding out in a cabin in Woodstock. He had finished shooting Dune: Part One and was now downshifting, immersing himself in the life and catalog of Bob Dylan. With Dan, Timmy unpacked his complicated thoughts, feelings, fears, and aspirations duringa very transitional moment when he’d become extremely globally famous in a neck-snappingly short period of time. Meanwhile, Timmy and photographer Renell Medrano tripped around Woodstock, making pictures by fields, campfires, and creeks.
And now, part three. I won’t step on Dan’s story by prefacing it in any way, other than to say this: To read these three pieces together is to map the complex mental and emotional landscape of an era-defining figure as he evolves—a person who is, at once, both just like you and me and not at all like you and me. He’s universal and he’s singular. It’s hard to explain, but of course you know what I mean because this is exactly his appeal.
When I first read the manuscript of Dan’s piece I remember thinking, If only every person on earth got to have their story told in such a rich, profound, ennobling way. Since that is not possible, we get to have our stories told vicariously through one portal: Timmy.
It has been said that a trilogy is the perfect way to articulate the full arc of a character. But Chalamet’s career is just getting going, and so are we. I like to think of this as Book I, Chapter III. If all goes well, in just a few short years, it’ll be time to start writing Book II. Timothée, for his part, has already started living it.

if you could send any of the other counselors to Hackett House with Laura, who would you pick & why?
I feel like the only one that makes sense to me (personally) other than Ryan would be Kaitlyn.
I think if the game fully capitalized on the opportunity to have Kaitlyn know about the van (which they absolutely should’ve, it would’ve added so much depth to her motivations throughout the story other than ‘kickass’ and ‘survive’), it would’ve provided an amazing opportunity to drastically diverge the game’s paths/outcomes. By having Kaitlyn know about the van (and it literally would’ve been so easy too—just a knowing look and a ‘Kaitlyn knows what you did’ playing as Jacob) it introduces this feeling of responsibility and guilt regarding the situation the group finds themselves in. And I have two ways I could see the game potentially implementing this choice:
1- Ryan being able to get infected at the radio hut — if Dylan doesn’t get bit (you don’t break into the cabin as Abi and Emma), Ryan does. After seeing what happens to Nick, he is more concerned with getting himself somewhere he can’t hurt anyone than tagging along with Laura, and Kaitlyn goes in his stead. I also think they could've had a possible utilization of the cage inside the camp store—potential chase scene where whoever goes with him (most likely Dylan) has to find their way out of the store while avoiding a wolfed out Ryan who turned too soon to be locked up in time.
2- Playing as Ryan, you are given the choice between going with Laura or staying with the group—if you choose to stay, Kaitlyn is the one who goes due to feeling like she needs to help end things to ‘fix her mistake’ and maybe even find Jacob (wish the game did more with them being childhood friends)
Just like Ryan, I think there would be a lot of emotional pay off of Kaitlyn going to Hackett house, just in different ways. Mainly: the reunion with Jacob in the basement (I also think this could be a way to make Kaitlyn’s route different than Ryan’s — maybe have Jacob willing to tag along through the house with Kaitlyn but not with Ryan due to their established relationships).
(I also think Laura and Kaitlyn would absolutely clap the Hacketts working together, and I self-indulgently want the two to interact more lol)

“So Ryan and Laura...” (Lovers Card Analysis)
I know people talk about Ryan and Laura not having any romantic chemistry and it’s bizarre to say that there was any romance between them. And while I agree about they're not really being chemistry, I do think the writers were trying to make them love interests (and did a terrible job). So I decided to do an analysis of their relationship (this is what I'm using my English degree for) and I thought I’d share my thoughts because boy I’ve got some stuff to say.
And of course feel free to take this all with a grain of salt, these are just my interpretations and I'm also by no means an expert in tarot (I'm really not all that familiar and any familiarity comes from a google search). Just wanted to make those quick notes so that if you don't agree I totally get it! I do try to address the most common points for why people don't see Ryan and Laura in a romantic light and while I agree I try to show what I think the writers might have been Attempting to do.
The more obvious points are of course from the script itself. How there’s “sexy sparks” between the two, how Laura begrudgingly says trauma can bring people together (as if to say it didn’t bring her and Max together), how Laura brings up Ryan’s relationship to Kaitlyn and his reply of “maybe neither” to whether he likes Kaitlyn or Dylan perhaps insinuating his choice is going to be Laura.
And it's... bad writing. For instance, Laura pins Ryan as a “brooding loner” when she’s known him for an hour and in that time he’s been talkative/around people/acting as leader. How would she know he's a brooding loner? Not to mention her saying Kaitlyn seems to look up to him when it’s the opposite of what she’s seen? (Ryan potentially asking Kaitlyn what he should do, her scolding him for pointing the gun at Laura). But all of that is not the point of this post. I’m bringing these moments up to say this relationship is a lot of tell with little show, (and what we're told we've already been shown the opposite).
If you didn’t pick up there was “chemistry” then Dylan and Kaitlyn will tell you that. If you think Ryan is interested in Dylan because you chose to grow that relationship, Ryan is going to say no. (Of course you could interpret the "after tonight I don't know" line that Ryan is understandably not sure of anything given the circumstances, I myself interpret it that way however the "maybe neither" definitely is this additional "Ryan chooses neither Kaitlyn nor Dylan" and perhaps there is an unasked question of will he then choose Laura?) That being said, I don't think if any of the “these guys are into each other” lines were in the script people would have even thought they were flirting/interested in each other (it would still be a ship some people like based on how they work together to survive akin to Sam and Mike but again at least that script didn't constantly point out romantic/sexual tension in between horror scenarios).
So when people say there’s no chemistry and the relationship is more “we have to work together but I’m gonna bitch at you the whole time" I agree, but the game kind of throws Laura at Ryan (her literally falling on top of him) after revealing the Lovers card depicting Laura biting Ryan’s arm. We know it, we hate it, but this is where my analysis comes in.
Tumblr media
Aside from the obvious fact that Ryan and Laura are labeled as the lovers, the card itself has a few layers to it that I’ll go through.
The first being choices, specifically choices in relationships/partners. Now when I first read that I thought “Great, that doesn’t mean Ryan is her choice perhaps he just is one choice.” But the context makes it so he’s kind of her only choice if Ryan is going to survive. The context being Ryan can let Laura bite him in order to save him from blood loss, or he can refuse which leads her to reuniting with Max. There is no way for her to reunite with Max without Ryan dying. What that insinuates with the context of choice of suitor is... yikes. Basically Laura “choosing” Max comes from Ryan dying, and the implication that in order for Ryan to survive that he and Laura are somehow bonded romantically from that point on. Hate both of those, actually.
Now we move onto the next meaning of this card, temptation. This is where we go full analysis mode. The original Lovers card depicts Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. After all what better example of temptation than Adam and Eve biting into the forbidden fruit. And what does Laura do? She bites Ryan. He is her forbidden fruit. And where does this scene take place? The Hackett greenhouse.
A garden.
Tumblr media
It’s not exactly subtle. There’s also the parallel of Ryan being stabbed in the ribs, Eve being made from the rib of Adam.
So alright, they’re drawing parallels between Adam and Eve and Ryan and Laura (bringing about the downfall of humanity/the Hacketts). But does this mean that Laura is “giving into temptation” by saving Ryan’s life? I mean that sounds stupid. And maybe her "temptation" is more-so the werewolf curse and giving into that but then why point out "sexy sparks?" Why have Laura ask if Ryan is flirting with her? Why label them lovers? It may just be that stupid because I also found this in Chris’s office when playing as Dylan. This book is right by Ryan, right where Dylan asks if he has a girlfriend or boyfriend.
Tumblr media
Maybe it's a reference to the love triangle between Ryan, Dylan, and Kaitlyn. But the title? ...The King of My Gardens?
Not looking like a coincidence anymore. They were planting this seed early on. And the fact that the only foreshadowing of Ryan and Laura is this book cover that no one is going to see (unless they scower through each corner of the game like I do) that’s not even writing.
I love nothing more than when writers put in extra effort with little things like this that a casual viewer won’t see but it just goes to show that even if you do that it can’t make up for bad writing and a lack of chemistry. I’m sure some people like the pairing but to me it’s introduced way too late after the player has invested time in other relationships.
Perhaps Dylan and Kaitlyn aren't reliable when they talk about Laura and Ryan, and if that was the Only instance the game tries to put Ryan and Laura together I would agree but twice is a coincidence, three times is a pattern and man is there a pattern here.
As for Laura yes she is going through all of this for Max but it depends on the players choices how that relationship is going. After all, she could have left him at the very beginning of the game. While Laura's choice to save Max is always the same in order for the story to stay on track, her motive could be from love or perhaps a sense of loyalty/duty (Ryan's and Laura's loyalty being what brings these two together, be it romantically or out of admiration but I can see that's probably why the writers were trying to put them together because they respect how far they're willing to go for the people in their lives).
So if the player's choices hurt Laura and Max's relationship and she starts bonding with Ryan, the camera lingering on her smiling after Ryan says "maybe neither" could be read as her being interested. After all she asks (curiously? hopefully?) how close he is with Kaitlyn, insinuating she's trying to figure out if he's available. Maybe that's not the case or maybe it's due to her werewolf infection but the game doesn't show her fighting back against it so it seems to be presented as genuine. Regardless of the viewer's interpretation the relationship as a whole could have been presented better (let their be an option if the player really doesn't want Ryan with either Dylan or Kaitlyn to turn them both down early on and if Laura's relationship with Max has also plummeted then sure add another relationship path, but let the player choose which relationships will become romantic).
And I know these games aren’t dating sims, the point of these horror survival games is, well, survival. But literally every other Supermassive Game puts just as much emphasis on character relationships (and a lot of emphasis on romantic relationships) as they do survival (Chris and Ashley, Alex and Julia, etc.) And for a game to be all about how your choices matter and then have them not really matter when it comes to the relationships they bring attention to? When they do in every other game?
It feels like Supermassive just told me “It’s Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve.”

What do you think the comfort activities would be for each counselor? Like if they had a really long or bad day and they just want to decompress at the end of it?
ooooh thank you so much for this <3 this is the perfect break between writing binges & i love this question!! prepare for a lot of headcanons, i had to think about this a lot
Abi - i think she draws, that's pretty canon, it calms her down. i also think she paints when she really wants to zone out & not think (she loves watercolor but she's been experimenting with acrylics lately) & she does a lot of landscape paintings. the only color that usually sits untouched is red. the smears on her fingers bring up bad memories. she also burns relaxing incense & listens to soothing instrumental tracks
Ryan - he listens to his podcast usually, but i think his sister plays piano (she's very good) & she often gets him to sit down so she can teach him scales or beginner songs & it relaxes him. otherwise i can see him settling down in the comfortable chair wedged in the corner of his room with his drawing tablet, lights dim, & just working on some art. occasionally his sis barges in to play her DS on his bed while he does & then they both just exist together in silence
Nick - they give us so little about Nick that i honestly could just say anything about this freak. but i think he gets stoned & watches terrible movies when he needs to decompress. he's seen Llamageddon eight times. i can also see him going for short walks or half-listening to nature documentaries while he cooks
Emma - when she needs to wind down, she love taking hot baths. she has a ton of bath bombs & oils & products, so she lights some scented candles, turns off the lights, puts on some relaxing tunes, & soaks. i also think she learned to sew so she could mend her own expensive clothes, but then she ended up enjoying it, so she sew/embroiders sometimes on the side to relax. she prolly does yoga too
Kaitlyn - she goes for runs, for sure. it's good exercise, builds her stamina, & helps keep her mind off... everything. she likes the early morning runs when it's just chilly enough to barely see her breath & she has a killer playlist for them. her guilty pleasure is rupaul's drag race & so every season you can catch her, fresh out of the shower, in her sweats, mug of coffee in hands & a bottle of wine on the table, pore strips on, enraptured & getting way too intense about the show
Dylan - this mans pops three edibles & opens the NASA website so he can watch space in real time. if he can manage it, he'll lay for hours on the floor with his cat purring on his chest. sometimes he'll watch cartoons or sci-fi shows to zone out, or he'll put on his headphones & try to forget the world. no i'm not projecting
Jacob - he strikes me as the kind of person who considers working out to be relaxing, so he spends a lot of his free time doing that. otherwise i see him being into cheesy rom-coms (altho he'd never admit it) so some nights he makes himself some popcorn, mixes in m&ms, & settles in to watch The Notebook for the tenth time
Laura - she's def one of those ppl who can't go too long without doing something so her "relaxing" time is usually cleaning, animal care - possibly a gamer. she likes staying busy. whenever she actually settles down to relax, it's usually with & bc of Max. they play checkers together & watch movies they can make fun of. they binge criminal minds together. she's not great in the kitchen but she helps Max bake sometimes & she's an expert on the grill. i think she would enjoy taking up gardening if they get their own property
Max - he loves his relaxation time. he bakes, he naps, he definitely would enjoy gardening, but he always relaxes easier when he's with Laura <3 he prolly plays idle video games like animal crossing, he was for sure heavy into pokemon, & he loves cartoons. the most relaxing time of the day for him is 3pm, when he can eat cereal on the couch & watch scooby-doo, & he doesn't need a blanket bc the blinds are open & the sun keeps him warm :)

I love the Quarry but I think it could use a complete fix to improve it.
I know a lot of stuff was scrapped due to Covid-19 getting in the way, but there's always potential for a remake (I can only hope)
Making the two save options ACTUALLY let you save Max/Nick. The only thing we get from that are different dialogue lines.
Number 1 is also a reason why we should add character relationships and traits back. Don't get me wrong, I like the pause menu for The Quarry, I think it's super unique, but there's plenty of space to add relationships and traits back in. That's what made Until Dawn so unique, especially when you do a deep dive on character traits changing with your dialogue options. (like for example, Mike's honesty goes down when he tries to comfort Jess).
I also think more options in the game that would change characters fates in different chapters would give a larger variety of story. Like for example; instead of Max getting infected, it's Laura whose infected and Max has to go out and kill Chris. Instead of Jacob getting captured, we have Emma captured. Instead of Nick getting infected, we have Abi infected. This would definitely give more characters some screen time and from someone who thinks characters in a story bring everything together, would allow people to select characters they like in order to give them more screen time over other characters they may not like as much. (It's sort like watching a horror movie but not being invested in what happens to a character you don't like).
Change chapter 8. From someone who has replayed the game several times in order to get 100%, I found chapter 8 to be the most boring and repetitive out of every single chapter. I understand why they made the chapter that way to explain what happened to Laura and Max, I just don't like the execution of it. Especially when we've been following 7 other characters for 7 chapters and now we're focusing on 2 characters we haven't seen since the prologue.
Removing plot armour from Ryan, Laura and Kaitlyn. These three characters can only die at the very end of the game, which sucks, since I really don't care for Ryan or Laura. I know they're fixing that with Mike and Sam in the new Until Dawn remake, allowing them to die earlier, rather than at the very end of the game. (And I know Chris is also getting an alternate death that is a chapter earlier).
When they first announced The Quarry, they said that each character would have several ways to die in the game, which obviously, was not the case. More danger would definitely up the risk factor of the game.
Adding additional scenes for those infected after the curse has been broken. For the characters who have the ability to turn into a werewolf post-curse breaking is; Max, Emma, Nick and Dylan. BUT, we only get Max and Emma scenes. I would've loved to see Nick appear again and be super disorientated. Along with Dylan, who would obviously be searching for Kaitlyn.
Adding scrapped dialogue back in to make scenes make more sense and more fleshed out. Kaitlyn's whole, "You done?" line makes zero sense without Dylan and Ryan's scrapped lines.
Making the ending better. I thought the ending of The Quarry SUUUUUUUUUUCKED. We get this intense car chase with Silas and then we find him curled up in his cage? BORING. It was super anti-climatic (and I get it, covid happened) and should've been more fleshed out.
Also, FIX LAURA'S HAIR!

what did u think of the characters in the quarry i feel like they were hard to get into if that makes sense
tbhhhh i think almost all of them are at least entertaining if not likable. im watching an until dawn playthrough rn to compare and while im not far in i will say im so far definitely preferring the quarrys cast.
dylan & emma were my personal faves... dylan is a no brainer cast stand out for sure hes super fun, and emma like. she sucks but i like her LMAO. kaitlyn was also pretty cool but i feel like she got kind of shafted in the development department :/ she doesnt have much to do and despite being the expert marksman she uses the guns surprisingly little. jacob & ryan got on my nerves a lot but i think they both have the clearest arcs in the game even if the formers just ends with him crying in the woods lol. nick & abi were super boring and inoffensive... like unless emma gets infected abi really doesnt have any major cool scene and nick is just a werewolf for half the game, and also his character models mouth was obviously rigged to be smiling as the default and it was really distracting. max and laura were really cute together but laura coming back and taking over the plot was super fucking annoying
i think they all definitely wouldve been a lot better if we got any kind of real conclusion. like its actually insane that so much of the early game plot hinges on their flirty blooming romances and then its just all dropped with jacob & emma being the only relationship to possibly get closure if you pick up one (1) extremely easy to miss item in the first chapter. like its actually such bullshit we get no max and laura reunion ☹️

Text under the cut
Dylan had never been a morning person until camp, where he had found a new routine: getting up early for morning announcements, sitting in the radio hut with watery coffee. His first impression of his new workplace had been low, the room was rundown and dusty, the roof creaked and groaned under the elements, which still took him by surprise every time. But he had fixed up the hut over the summer. Most importantly, it was the only place where Dylan could be alone to unwind.
Dylan hadn’t been expecting how much energy it took to reimagine yourself as someone funny, charismatic and, he could only hope, cool. He had come to camp with a plan to use his last summer before college for a trial run of the new Dylan.
Dylan had been hoping for a little fun, just like when he had come to Hackett’s Quarry as a kid. But he hadn’t expected to make so many new friends, even if it felt a little hollow with them liking the new Dylan.
He loved hanging out with them, laughing at Nick’s offbeat sense of humour, poking fun at Jacob’s earnestness and pretending not to be intimidated by Kaitlyn’s effortless coolness. Even the counsellors he was less close to were becoming his friends. Abi’s shyness was fading as the weeks went on and he was starting to like Emma’s dramatic flair.
Then there was Ryan, who Dylan put in his own special category. Whilst the rest of them had become close, Ryan remained reclusive. It only made Dylan more drawn to him. He had made an effort to talk to Ryan as much as he could without coming off as obsessed (Kaitlyn’s words, complete with a knowing smirk) but the other counsellor still remained a mystery.
Although sometimes… sometimes Ryan would laugh at one of Dylan’s jokes, or add a dry comment. He was good with the kids, helping them through homesickness. It was an unexpected sweet side to him, and it only made Dylan pine harder.
Kaitlyn made fun of him for it, even if she agreed Ryan was hot.
“Good luck,” she had said with a snort, “I’ve been hitting on him the last two summers and he never flirts back.”
Dylan had grinned at her. “Maybe he’s more into guys.”
“I think he’s bi,” Kaitlyn had said, wiggling her eyebrows, “so it’s fair game.”
She had been joking, but it had sparked a hope in Dylan that he couldn’t ignore. His crush snowballed.
So did Kaitlyn’s teasing, which was why Dylan was glad to be alone when he read their chore rota. His and Ryan’s names were printed together under  ‘general maintenance.’ An otherwise boring chore was suddenly all he could think about.
Daydreams of exactly how it would go distracted him all morning. Dylan’s main job was the radio hut but Mr H didn’t think that kept him busy enough, so he usually found a stack of admin to do on the desk. He’d learnt the camp was running out of money, two counsellors never
showed up and that Jacob’s middle name was Archibald. But none of his usual tasks kept his mind off Ryan, so Dylan announced lunch ten minutes early and headed to the hall.
It was empty for once, probably because he was early, only Nick banging around the kitchen. Dylan poked his head in. “Hey.”
Nick didn’t look up from the giant pot of mac and cheese he was stirring. “You good man? You’re never on time.”
“Lies,” Dylan replied, even if it was true. He leaned against the counter. “Hey, want to guess Jacob’s middle name?”
“Kind of busy,” Nick replied.
Dylan spent the rest of lunch distracted, a little embarrassed at how his attention kept drifting to Ryan at the other end of the table. He tapped his fingers on the table, full of restless energy.
Kaitlyn put her hand on top of his. “You good?”
“I’m fine,” Dylan replied.
“What’s up?” Kaitlyn pushed, clearly seeing through him.
“Nothing.”
Despite his best efforts to be casual, his eyes darted to Ryan once again. This time Kaitlyn noticed.
“You’re down bad,” she teased.
“Shut up.”
That only made Kaitlyn grin more, which didn’t disappear for the rest of lunch. She shot him a wink as they parted ways for the afternoon. Dylan made a point of ignoring her, although he did fuss with his hair once her back was turned.
Ryan was talking to Mr H’s kids, although they sulked away once he approached. They practically made Ryan look as extroverted as Emma. Dylan figured they must be homeschooled.
“Those guys never let you get a word in, huh?” Dylan joked.
Ryan shrugged. “You have to get to know them.”
Given that they had just bolted at the sight of him, Dylan wasn’t so sure. But if they were Ryan’s friends, it was probably best not to push it. He didn’t want to piss Ryan off.
“So, I have to go make a couple of quick announcements and then I’m all yours.”
Ryan raised an eyebrow. “Are you now?”
Dylan hoped his face wasn’t too red. “If you’re lucky,” he replied.
It was better to double down on the accidental flirting than to shy away from it like the old Dylan would have. The old Dylan went to prom alone.
“Can I come with?” Ryan asked.
“I’ll give you the grand tour,” Dylan said, savouring the brief quirk of a smile he got in return.
Ryan followed him out, hands tucked in his pockets. “It’s cool the radio hut is open again. It was fun as a kid.”
“You were a camper here too?” Dylan asked.
He wondered if Ryan had put together the dorky kid from cabin four to him. But he didn’t remember seeing Ryan either, and the camp used to be busier, so maybe their paths had simply never crossed. Dylan was oddly disappointed at the idea of it.
He shook his head. “Not officially but Chris is a family friend and my Mom was always… too busy to take care of me over breaks.”
“You must really like it here to keep coming back.”
“Yeah. There’s good memories here, no matter how much pot washing I did to earn my keep,” Ryan said.
They had reached the radio hut but Dylan considered looping around camp again to keep the conversation going. It was the first time Ryan had opened up to him. But Dylan didn’t get so lucky - they reached the door and Ryan stopped, looking at him expectantly. Dylan opened the door and they stepped inside.
Ryan started poking at the shelves. “I guess all the vinyls are Chris’?”
“He thought I might want some of his music,” Dylan explored. “But I think he just wanted to keep his shit here. It was basically a storage shed when I moved in.”
“Not a Billy Joel guy?” Ryan asked.
“That’s dad music,” Dylan replied.
Ryan didn’t reply, back to browsing. Dylan left him to it as he flicked through the loose papers on the desk for the announcements. The paper was under the schedule and Dylan felt his face heat up. He hoped Ryan hadn’t noticed how he had underlined their names like a middle schooler.
Dylan reached for the speaker. “Good afternoon campers. This afternoon cabins one, three and five will be doing some drama exercises with the lovely Emma, so brush off your acting skills. That leaves cabins two and four in the care of Kaitlyn and Jacob for some archery sessions. Remember to point it away from you. Chef Nicholas will have dinner ready at six, so save your appetites!”
Dylan put down the speakerphone and swirled in his chair to find Ryan watching him.
“Enjoy the show?”
“You’re a real poet,” Ryan replied dryly. “Ready? The drains won’t clean themselves.”
Dylan pulled a face. “That’s what maintenance is? That sucks.”
“I’ll get you some gloves.”
He got out his chair. “Hey, there’s no one I’d rather clean drains with.”
Ryan rolled his eyes but Dylan hadn’t been kidding. Kaitlyn was right - he was down bad.
“So, did you do a lot of this as a kid? Or was it all just dishwashing?”
“Just dishes,” Ryan said after a moment of consideration, “Chris let me do the activities too. He was good to us.” “Us?”
“My sister used to come too. But Sarah’s fourteen now so she thinks she’s too cool for summer camp.” There was a fondness in his voice that Dylan hadn’t seen from Ryan all summer. “Little sisters.”
“I won’t know. I’m an only child.”
“That tracks,” Ryan said.
Dylan wasn’t sure if he should be offended or not. He’d ask Kaitlyn later, he trusted her opinion.
“What’s she like?” Dylan asked. “A mini Ryan?”
“She’s in her Hot Topic and video games phase.”
“So, yes?” Dylan teased.
Ryan laughed and he wanted to play the sound on loop. “Hey, rude.”
“Nothing wrong with it. I like your style.”
Ryan looked down at his outfit - all black under a faded flannel shirt with the arms cut off. It was an effortlessly cool look that served as a reminder Dylan was trying too hard. He’d stocked up on band shirts and ripped jeans but never quiet felt confident in them. At least he was a good actor.
“Thanks.” Ryan looked away, almost shy. The idea made Dylan smile to himself. “Anyway, we’ve got a job to do.”
“Lucky us,” Dylan grumbled, pulling on gloves.
It turned out that cleaning drains was not as romantic as he’d hoped. Even with Ryan’s company, scraping wet leaves from a gutter was not his idea of fun. Nor did it provide much opportunity for conversation. Ryan had retreated back into himself, pulling headphones from somewhere.
Still Dylan was content. He had gotten Ryan to open up a little. He made him laugh. It was a good first step. Maybe they could be friends - there was still half the summer left.
Maybe, if Dylan was lucky, they could be more.

Types of Yanderes The Quarry Characters Would Be
Synopsis - Pretty simple, a set of hcs describing The Quarry Characters and their tendencies as Yanderes
Warnings - Acts of violence, Literal murder, gaslighting
Authors Note - me and the quarry game as a whole getting married. Also.... IS DYLAN GAY?!?? I DIDNT WANT TO WRITE FOR HIM CAUSE I WAS UNCERTAIN
A friendly reminder that all my works are dark fanfiction! Please if you do not like that do not read them! This is your final warning before hitting the keep reading button!!
Abigail - Shy
She won't even speak to you at first, literally she waits for you to make the first move
She will still stalk you, that's just a given but she'll never interact with you on her own
Yet when she first does either through you or maybe Emma introducing her to you, she becomes a open book
She'll talk and talk and talk, most of it being a bunch of rambles. But hey it's not common for someone she's been admiring from afar for 2 weeks to finally speak and enjoy being around her.
As for actually hurting or killing people she would never, well intentionally or plan out a murder. But if it's like a spur of the moment thing she gets super ashamed and hides what she's done quick
She can't risk you hating her for something she didn't even know was possible for her to do
However she will never actually take you unless she's forced, even then she'll just let it all he and just have you live with her
Abi will apologize continuously, she craves your validation so please give it to her
Laura - Determined
Once Laura has her sights set on a goal, you, it's hard to steer her away from that goal.
This makes her one of the hardest to get away from, Laura being smart enough to think of every attempt before hand and having something to counteract that attempt
Yet she's also preplanned any possible way for you to trust her again if case things go south.
The more you trust her and her guidance the more things she'll allow for you to do, it's not like she doesn't want you to enjoy your time in the relationship, infact that's all she wants when it comes to you
Laura is the type willing to get her hands dirty over you, killing whoever she sees fit. Sometimes she’ll chose someone very close, make your watch, then torture and then to prove a point, which is always a huge end goal for her.
Her main key is proving a point, the point being that she's right. And that you belong together and always have been.
Ryan - Lovesick
He loves a connection!
As soon as he hits that connection with you he's hooked. Ryan doesn't really talk to people, in fact he was never really good with them in the first place. So whenever you pop into his life out of nowhere hes lovesick and will literally be wrapped around your finger
One thing that benefits him is the fact that he's a tad bit intimidating. He's so intimidating in fact that he just kind of sulks around and
Sharing is caring, only with you though, so he listens to his podcasts with you, sharing his thoughts and how it'd be so cute if you started your own
But as soon as someone messes with you and your relationship he goes ballistic. He will harm someone, not to kill them but he will get his point across
His entire snarky awkward attitude is all a front why would he reveal who he really is when he'd rather hide behind you and be that rock for you to lean on
Max - Obsessed
Imagine how doting his is over Laura upped x100. He's a big goof ball yes but he knows what's his is his
He's super clingy at that, so expect every moment with him to be him cuddling up next to you and feeling up on you
This is way worse whenever he gets infected, turning even more obsessed with the mere idea of you, it's to the point where he constantly smothers you with just how much he loves you
Even if your not a thing he will find some way to be this crucial aspect in your life, by any means possible. It could be he's your quirky next door neighbor in your apartment complex that always invites you over after work, or maybe a returning costumer that comes every day to the small shop you work at
During all these instances he has memorabilia of the event, a bag you gave him or maybe you left your purse and he'd take something unrecognizable like a chapstick. (He will constantly rub it against his lips and claim it's almost like kissing you)
Nicknames galore! Your his whole world and he needs to remind you that always!!
When it comes to killing he actually plans it out to where he's around his target or would lead them into a desolate location to let his werewolf form handle it, god knows he can't
Overall with him it's never bad, it's just tiring at points
Emma - Manipulative
She knows exactly what you want to hear and when you want to hear it
Emma will wind her way into your life slowly making her be seen as the only thing you truly need in this world
Literally she will spread mess with the only goal of it getting back to you therefore pushing you further into her arms, instantly she'd play the sympathy card
Only when times get desperate and she's at an actual risk of losing you will she ever go out of her way to harm anyone.
Without the threat she usually does nothing, tearing your idealization of that person down with just a few words from her lips
But as soon as you find out something happened you go to your best friend and cry on her shoulder, Emma being there to reassure you that everything is alright and safe! If all else fails you could even stay with her until you feel better!!
She's the only one in your corner, your best friend remember!
Kaitlyn - Controlling
She doesn't like you leaving the house or go anywhere without her permission
After what happened at Hackett's Quarry, she can't even think about you getting hurt, especially if you got bit there.
This means controlling the food you eat, limiting your time outside at night, even hooking you up on a full moon just in case
She truly loves you! It's just hard for her to trust the outside world, just about seeing the worst of it
It's to the point to where she hides guns in places all over your shared house
Other than that she's super fun when she's not overreacting, she'll allow people to come over all the time
Nick - Intense
Nick is so intense with his love for you, he will find any and all ways to show that love
He gives compliments like no other, and will constantly flirt with you calling everything you do amazing or even just you in general
That is until he gets bit
Whenever Nick gets bit he like loses it over you and instantly claims what's his, and what's always been his
He's big into pda and if he sees you talking to someone he doesn't like he will go up to you, make out with you and then just lurk behind you, taunting whoever your talking to behind your back
Then immediately after that person leaves he drags you off to where you can be alone, which is definitely a hiding place only he uses and knows
Nick will hurt you, almost never intentionally, he just can't recgonize his strength and goes too far at times in which he will patch you up
Yet he really gets you when he paints himself as this victim and that your one of the few things he can rely on so don't leave him yada yada
So he would trust you to chain him up and to watch over him whenever he turns at times, but on others he takes that as a opportunity to attack others and act as a form of a protector to him
Jacob - Emotional
He puts his all into you and let's his heart lead his actions, you could use him if you really wanted too
After Emma kind of treated him bad he hoped that someone hell anyone would love him the way he loves them
Then he meets you
And God is Jacob in love, someone who lets him be him without any judgement, it's like he's in heaven
So of course he would want to protect that
Most of what makes him a yandere, is that he acts without thinking, and attacks people just merely to protect you
Sometimes it's charming but others it's scary and changes into a completely different person, his carefree and joking attitude turning into a more serious and dark one
But he recognizes he scares you and his emotions change once again and he's back to doting and apologizing to you, but he'll definitely take care of the situation later
He just has more important things to worry about at the current moment

an unnecessarily long rant about dylan and ryan not ending up together
okay so i absolutely utterly love this game, and i know that in the end, it's just a silly little horror game and there is a lot more i could criticize about it, but i've been thinking about this for a little while now so here we go.
the more time passes, the less everything around dylan and ryan's romance in the quarry makes sense. like, they make sense, sure, but then the whole laura x ryan thing? ryan merely acknowledging that he is closer to dylan than to kaitlyn but then dismissing it all by claiming he isn't sure if he'd want to date either of them? nothing about potential romantic feelings, and then there being no ending where they end up together?
like, out of all the couples at the camp, they had the best chemistry. i love abi, but dear god did i not buy her and nick, especially not after he got infected. at first i genuinely thought she was going to end up with emma, so idk what that says about abi and nick. and jacob and emma... he is overly possessive and can't take no for an answer, and she deliberately leads him on and then treats him like shit for no reason. like, no, i don't want them to end up together, sorry.
as far as i know, there isn't an ending where either of the others end up together, too, but with emma and jacob we know jacob still loves her and there is a moment where emma can potentially admit that she still has feelings for him but thinks that they're not meant to be together. alright, but at least you can get some kind of resolution for them.
and abi and nick... i think i'm just not that upset about these two because as i said, i just didn't really buy their chemistry? and then nick turned out to be kind of an asshole so i'm just glad it didn't end up working out between them, i guess.
in the beginning the writers set up this sorta love triangle between kaitlyn, ryan and dylan which goes nowhere. like we all know that if ryan kisses kaitlyn in truth or dare the little text shows up that says dylan is disappointed (and he certainly looks like it), but when ryan kisses dylan, it says nothing about kaitlyn and dylan just sits there all smiley and flustered. and everyone's happy for them, too, whereas when ryan kisses kaitlyn, no one reacts. even kaitlyn herself looks uncomfortable which i guess could just her being nervous, but still. and for the rest of the game, her crush on ryan isn't brought up again once, there isn't even a way for kaitlyn and ryan to end up together, and the whole love triangle literally stops being a thing right after the campfire. what i'm trying to say is, the writers obviously never intended for kaitlyn and ryan to be a thing, they hardly interact alone at all, so why did they even include it? it's all about dylan and ryan, like, the entire time (until laura shows up but i'll talk about that in a bit), it's so obvious that they wanted an ending where dylan and ryan end up together and that their relationship is canon, so why drag kaitlyn into all of this only for her crush on ryan to disappear, like, immediately?
at first i thought it was to add some drama, but then laura shows up and i think we all agree that there was absolutely no romantic tension between her and ryan and i'm still wondering if all the characters were high when they pointed out ryan's crush on laura like wtf r u talking about
and i mean, i haven't tried to play it any differently, but laura and max are happy together, right? like, their only problem is that max didn't tell her about the rejection letter, but for her to know that she must have gone through his stuff which is also not cool. so, they might have some issues, but i didn't really get the feeling that they were on the verge of breaking up or something.
so, when the writers tried to make this laura x ryan thing happen because boy and girl alone? they must be in love, it really feels like they chickened out of making a gay couple endgame, like, last minute. and that's why the whole kaitlyn love triangle thing frustrates me bc it kind of feels like the same thing.
the only reason i made ryan be somewhat nice to laura (and vice versa) was because i heard that this was the only way to get him to admit to her that he was closer to dylan than to kaitlyn. but it also felt extremely out of character considering the situation they're in, like, it's obvious ryan doesn't trust laura at all, he literally only goes with her because she wants to kill chris who is like a father figure to him and he wants to stop her. also, he saw her kill kaylee, she is getting frustrated with him because he doesn't really buy anything she tells them in the pool house, they literally do not get along. hell, she has more chemistry with dylan in that scene than with ryan?? they don't even have an enemies to lovers type of vibe; to me, it was more like a i-really-don't-like-you-and-i-don't-trust-you-but-i'm-kind-of-forced-to-because-these-people-want-to-kill-us-frenemies type of relationship.
i literally, and i mean this lightheartedly, felt like the game was trying to gaslight me into believing there was some unresolved sexual or romantic tension between laura and ryan like hello? you've known each other for ten minutes what are you even saying? laura you're on a mission trying to save your boyfriend what is going on??
and then they still don't end up together, like ryan x laura never happens, like it was nothing but a weird fever dream, so why tf did the writers include this? it wasn't even to build up some weird jealous tension between ryan and dylan because they never end up together. why not??
it's like the game tried so hard to convince us that ryan and dylan are definitely in love, they're crushing so hard and ryan is a little oblivious and dylan is a little insecure but yes the feelings are mutual!! only to then rub it under our noses that ryan could also like kaitlyn, though, and he totally fancies laura, too, so maybe he doesn't like dylan after all! it was all just an illusion he never had a crush on him!!
i know that dylan and ryan's kiss was the first same sex kiss in supermassive game's history, though they're not the first openly queer characters. so, i guess out of fear that homophobes are going to boycott the game, especially considering ryan is somewhat of a protagonist, they chickened out of canonically acknowledging ryan and dylan (yet giving all sorts of hints that they are supposed to be endgame), they added kaitlyn's crush on ryan to give players the choice between kissing her or dylan, and that's also why the whole laura x ryan thing happened, just to be able to say see, ryan didn't like dylan after all! and just for us to be left all confused because what the fuck is happening.
i also wouldn't be upset about the kaitlyn thing if they at least went somewhere with it, but like this it just feels so halfhearted. in the end, ryan is bisexual, so it wouldn't be impossible for him to like kaitlyn.
i think in the end i'm just a little upset that they gave us the illusion of choice when it came to the romantic relationships only to then take it all away from us halfway through the game and shit all over it by pretending ryan suddenly has a crush on laura and we didn't even get a say in it. and yes, i'm also a little sad to see that emma and jacob or abi and nick don't end up together no matter what because it would have been interesting to see, but as i said, both of these couples just didn't have as interesting of a chemistry as dylan and ryan had (in my opinion, i know i keep shitting on abixnick and jacobxemma, i still liked them okay!!). and i also understand that the game would have gotten so much more complicated if they had added all sorts of relationship outcomes to it. i just think it's a little disrespectful to your own story to just let the strongest (or second strongest idk, depends on your preferences, i also really enjoyed laura and max), relationship in your game fizzle out like it was nothing or pretend that it was utterly one sided and all just an illusion just because you're too scared to make a same sex couple end game.
(i just hope the developers see the overwhelming response to dylan and ryan and will take that to heart. also abigail and emma please they were so gay in that golf cart pls)
