If Lori had lived do you think Rick and Michonne would’ve still fallen in love? I’m sure most of us do but I’m curious as to how you see an alternate universe like that playing out? I feel like either Rick mirrors Lori and tries to sticks with marriage (either a broken or healing one) and as such it takes even longer for him and Michonne to connect. Or having Lori’s presence actually forces whatever grows between Rick and Michonne to be uncomfortably brought to the surface and instead accelerates their realization of their feelings. What do you think?

hey anon! these are all really interesting questions to think about.

i mean, i definitely think rick and michonne would have fallen in love anyway, and that was before the ones who live came into my house and said yes, definitively, they are soulmates and michonne is the love of his life.

i liked lori, and i think the amount of hate she gets can be unfair and sometimes uncalled for, but i also think she and rick were fundamentally incompatible and that michonne or no michonne, wouldn't have made it in the long run either way. in the very first scene of the show, rick tells shane that he and lori have been having a rough time, that she always seems pissed at him and he doesn't know why. this lack of understanding between them only seems to build over seasons 1 and 2, no matter how hard they're both trying.

that being said, i do think rick had every intention of trying to work things out with lori. he said as much when he was talking to her (to himself) on the phone after she died. specifically, he was going to get them safe first, and then he would "put it back together" as in, work on fixing their relationship. he was angry with her, and extremely hurt, but he still loved her, and at no point do i think he had ever really given up on her. that, i think, is part of why she haunted him for so long and why he felt so much guilt. he never really had a chance to tell her all of that before she was gone.

i don't know how long it would have taken them to call it quits had lori survived childbirth but i do think the chemistry and connection with michonne would have still established itself pretty quickly, and i think rick would definitely feel that innate understanding and connection in sharp contrast to how out of sync he and lori have always been. and i think lori would probably clock it as well. BUT, rick is no cheater - in fact, he's so honorable in that regard that i think as long as he was still focused on working things out with lori he would never let himself even think about going there with someone else. and for her part (and, from what I know, unlike her comic book counterpart but don't quote me on that) michonne would never get within a hundred feet of that situation - romantically - until it was completely resolved. this show doesn't really do love triangles (even shane/lori/rick wasn't so much a love triangle as it was a vehicle for rick's growth) so i think rick and lori's relationship would end and resolve itself on its own without any interference.

so with all of that in mind, i think rick and michonne would still have been a slow burn that matched pretty closely with what we saw in canon, except this time instead of rick having to get past the grief of losing lori, it would be just be the decline and resolution of that relationship that had he'd have to work through. while that was happening, i think rick and michonne would still naturally build their relationship, which would be platonic until it wasn't, just like in canon. for example, i think they'd still find it very easy to open up to each other, still be like-minded in most areas, michonne would still bond with carl. they'd still like being around each other and understand each other in ways no one else really could. and then they'd realize they were in love once they were safe and available to examine their own feelings. i think they'd still have been quietly and subconsciously in love with each other for a long while, but unready and/or unable to do anything about it until suddenly they were. so they could very much still mirror canon in that regard.

as for exactly how it would happen beat by beat, well. i'm no fanfic writer lol but i think there could be some subconscious yearning in there as well. as a treat.

yes i'm rooting for m*leven breakup because byler is neat but mostly? i'm rooting for m*leven breakup for the sake of el and mike.

to me, their romance was always a puppy love born out of a combination of social pressures, naïve curiosity, and a lack of true understanding regarding intimacy and romantic love and what it really is. it was real in that they do truly, deeply care about each other and they are close friends, maybe even shared an attraction, but a maturing romance is so much more than that. they've grown up and out of being boyfriend/girlfriend, and that's okay! i think television/film needs to show more often that most of us don't have definite "soulmates" or first childhood loves that we spend our whole lives with. it doesn't mean these relationships meant nothing and didn't impact us, it just means they've run their course and that something else is in the cards, and this is part of life!

i've always felt el was at her best and most confident self when broken up with mike, discovering who she was and what she liked alongside another girl her age instead of just relying on mike for mentorship on how to live in the real world. she deserves more of an opportunity to find herself, her autonomy, and her independence, and to love who she is, and she's made it clear she's felt insecure in the relationship with mike because she isn't being loved and understood the way she wants, needs, and deserves from someone who is her partner.

also, it's okay if mike doesn't love her in "the way he should". he is not obligated to love her romantically and stay in a relationship with her just because she's a girl, because she "needed someone", or because he cares about her a lot. he shouldn't be pressured into a romance if it's not truly coming from his heart. he deserves freedom to find out and honour who he is, too, instead of just staying in his non-functional first relationship — one he got into as a child, essentially — and defining himself that way because it's what's expected when a boy and a girl are close. he loves her in some way, yes, but it's okay if he doesn't feel comfortable or secure being her boyfriend anymore, for whatever reason that is. he's felt insecure too, and that's valid and it matters.

they are their own people and are steadily growing and changing every day. they need time to figure out who those people are, and it's become clear (at least in my opinion) that those people aren't meant to be a couple at this stage.

they deserve freedom. they deserve to grow up and be authentic to themselves and not feel like they need to lie for the sake of a relationship. they deserve to move on from this version of their relationship that isn't making them happy and rekindle the best part of their bond: their strong, beautiful friendship. they don't have to be a couple if it doesn't make them stronger and better and happier people.

i think it would be healthy and wonderful for a show, especially one consumed frequently by young adults, to show a relationship starting, progressing, and ending on good terms in this way. sometimes things don't work out, and that is okay.

I was accepted into the JET Program and will be moving to Japan for one year starting in late summer to teach English. : )

I don't know how many other applicants have ever had either of my specific application 'angles'. I think they were both pretty weird, but also very, very me, and I'm pleasantly surprised that they seemed to have worked, going off both by the acceptance and the very positive and warm reactions I got during the interview I had. These were:

Science/scicomm/museum background + implying mutual interest in and love of like insects and sea life could be an avenue of intercultural connection and exchange

India and Japan have always struck me as weirdly similar in ways nobody seems to discuss, especially in both being simultaneously hurtling into modernity and deeply traditional/conservative in many ways and places

So. Is this a silly idea considering most people in this program are fresh college grads, and people my age are expected to maybe be getting more settled rather than hopping continents? Is this a scary idea, considering I'll have to uproot all my shit and go exist in a foreign country whose language I really don't know beyond miniscule smatterings? I mean, hmm, yes on both counts, but I'm very excited. On count one, I'd only get older in the future and demonstrably *don't* already have a settled life and career here to disrupt (lol), and on count two...guys, I'm so so tired of letting fear and inertia make my life decisions.

Time to pack up and store most of my shit and end my lease and. Yeah. Also I haven't actually been to India in five years and will probably try to visit my relatives there in the coming months since idk if i'd had an opportunity for a prolonged visit in the future during the one year (at least) in jp. How do the t$$ crew stay in shape? Like what do their diets look like and their workout routines?

Joy is a powerlifter. Before she was arrested she had a gym membership and would hit the weight racks 4-6 times a week. Despite her overactive mind, it's a kind of therapeutic thing for her and would help burn off excess energy after a day in the gun shop. She's not a huge fan of cooking (and usually doesn't have the time), so she'd usually exist on chicken, rice, and canned or frozen veggies. Anything else she'd just eat out or visit home for

Jericho also enjoys weight lifting, but didn't have nearly as much time as Joy to get after it (family time comes first), and would usually manage to get in 3-4 hours of gym time a week, tops. He'll usually just do protein powder and almond milk for a recovery snack, and otherwise eats a lot of meals that are fairly easy to throw together and make leftovers out of (like stews, casseroles, etc)

Benji doesn't work out on purpose. He finds it both boring and intimidating. Cardio through dancing? He's all about it. He'll also go on walks if he feels like he's been too stagnant, and has a stretching routine he'll try to do every morning. He hates cooking and eats out whenever he can, but prefers lighter stuff like soup and sandwiches. Dishes that are too meat or dairy heavy just make him feel icky

Kaius used to do fencing, archery, and karate, (and has some shoulder strength built up because of those), but constantly moving from place to place makes it difficult to build a routine, so it's been a few years. The one thing he tries to do consistently is run, and that's out of practicality. (He has to run for his life a lot.) He generally eats whatever he can when he has time (and remembers to do it), and since he avoids meat that ends up being a lot of peanut butter sandwiches and microwave rice. Despite this, he still enjoys good food

Hunter doesn't have a routine. He just does what he wants when he feels like it, and since he's a restless person, he feels like it a lot. He'll go for a really long walk, or just run somewhere as fast as he can for the hell of it, or mess around with weights if he's somewhere that has them. (He'd also do a lot of cardio via fist fighting and running away from things, but that's a lifestyle issue lol) He's also in the "oh shit did I eat today" boat most of the time

Not sure if you can see, but Klara no longer has her baby bump. Their first daughter, born in 1301, unfortunately was a stillborn. Her name would have been Dorothea.

Well, this means getting to work on the second attempt as soon as possible.

The fish is immediately prepared for a grand dinner. It has been a while, but I know for sure this was for Easter. Since the original rules start in England, but I based my game in Germany, I researched which holidays were celebrated in Germany at the time and the traditions for them myself.

The second child and she made it! Her name is Helene Huber and she was born in 1302.

Work on the farm doesn't wait. So, even after giving birth, Klara is right back to reaping the harvest. I also may have been harvesting a bit too often at first, but I changed that later because it was getting too easy.

Anyways, you know what also doesn't wait? The need for an heir. So here we go again trying for a baby!

We're currently in 1303 and Helene has grown into a (sad) toddler!

But thankfully the farm animals are there to cheer her up! Yeah, she also has her parents, but they are busy with the farm.

Speaking of the farm, here's what it currently looks like! We've got a big field of crops and a bunch of animals, accompanying the little typical medieval German farm house. The toilet is, of course, outside in the outhouse and there's a small hot spring pond under the biggest tree on the lot.
