June 8, 1983. BLOOM COUNTY spoofs the same forged-Hitler-diaries scandal that inspired AMERICAN VS. THE JUSTICE SOCIETY: Milo Bloom makes a deal to sell fake secret Elvis diaries (composed by Opus) to NEWSWEEK magazine for a huge amount of money.
Do they get away with it? Almost, but it turns out that Opus made one crucial slip:

So Bill Watterson and Berkeley Breathed, creator of the Bloom County comic strip, both retired their comic strips around the same time. Breathed brought Bloom County back in 2015 and has occasionally brought Calvin and Hobbes back for “guest appearances,” with the approval and sometimes participation of Bill Watterson.

What are some of your favorite pieces of art/ art that has made you think a lot?
this is such a cheesy cop-out answer, but there's a lot of things that im going to struggle remembering because of 1. how situational the experience was (as in, the context in which i experienced the piece) 2. how wide the word "art piece" is. 3. the great fortune to have been born to parents with strong artistic sensibilities and a love of travel/education. so these are like. really weird and specific but maybe thats the way it should be:
let's start with the most overly dramatic: st. paul's cathedral in london has guided tours where they take you into rooms and let you mill around before moving to the next one. my family took a trip overseas as a really, really big special vacation to celebrate my sister and i graduating from high school (we're not twins, we just combo'd it after she graduated) that i was too brain-broken and teenage to fully appreciate. its a beautiful cathedral but i was in my edgy internet atheist stage and refused to be impressed by it until i stood over a grate in the floor. through the grates you can see the crypt that you visit next. but standing over the grate, someone below started to sing something hymnal and very catholic. and i realized i was the only one who could hear it because of the crowd chatter. and it made me feel, in the moment, so special and so lonely in a way that i still think about, a lot. it was for me only. divine providence.
a date with adam to a place i had no idea existed but he had been to before: the bad art museum, which is split over like 3 different buildings in a bizarre way. we only went to the one where you have to buy a ticket to a movie as entry and it was some truly lovely bad art and made me sad how inaccessible it was but resolute about my love of the nuances of uncelebrated anti-art masterpieces. then we watched "assassination nation" and it was fucking terrible. great date.
reading the theory regarding the "venus of willendorf" being a self portrait as a 20-something year old and running into the bathroom to take my clothes off and look down at myself and having my mind blown. not just by how much i instantly understood it, but because of the tugging feeling on my heart when i feel that strand of history connecting women artists driven by that unknown compulsion to create for creations sake!
similarly, seeing artemisia gentileschi's work next to her fathers and realizing how much she outclassed him in every single way and feeling the tugging feeling again, but this time with a dark woe of realization of how history minimizes achievement and talent when it eases a narrative
reading jane erye's descriptions of herself and her approaches to her plights and for the first time feeling like someone had walked a path that i currently found myself lost on.
reading 1984 as a middle schooler and becoming so angry at the ending i threw the book across the room (something i had never done before and never did again in my life) and stormed out of my room to complain to my mom lol. IT REALLY UPSET ME!!!
reading les miserables for the first time and weeping piteously for days after the ending and having it impact my brain so hard it re-wired how i think about the concept of "legacy" and what it means to matter in the world and how love is nothing without the courage to stand up for it. and that mercy should, and will, always supersede unwavering justice (hard lesson to remember, maybe im due for a re-read)
sneaking into my parents room to read the books i wasnt supposed to yet as a really little kid lol. my mom used to get "dykes to watch out for" in a newsletter she was subscribed to! but i didnt read those bc they were dumb relationship comics for grown-ups. i wanted to read about opus the penguin and lee iacocca, as if i knew who that was. my mother's comic collection was the single most influential constant in my life. knowing that i was exposed to bill watterson's commentary about his own work via the big collections my mom owned probably explains a lot about what's wrong with me. but she also had a lot of berke breathed before he fully wussed out
the general experience of playing a video game that you arent supposed to/when you arent supposed to is probably one of the most freeing means of meaningless rebellion as a kid that everyone should experience. i used to be up playing pokemon past my bedtime under my covers with a huge heavy rubber flashlight i stole from the kitchen and had to replace every morning without getting caught once i was done with it. god, the days before backlit screens we had to get really fucking wild with it. in high school i would wake up at 5:00am, sneak into the computer room where the ps2 was and play an hour of FFX bc its the longest fucking non-persona game in the world, stop playing before my mom woke up at 6:00am and sneak back into bed. if i hit a part where i couldnt save i would just turn the screen off and come back to it tomorrow lol. secrets......
reading the "pictures for sad children" arc about paul, who is a ghost, finally losing it and going on a rant about how it has never mattered how thin a computer screen is. they were right and reading it helped me articulate and understand a growing feeling of restless frustration at the world around me that i felt singular and alone in. im glad that last i heard that artist is doing ok. i hope they recognize the incredible value in their work as imperfect as they perceived it to be. i do not think they would be happy to know that their old work was impactful, but i hope they realize that what people are able to tease out of their work is meaningful, at least to me it is. ill transcribe the comic rather than repost it i think: paul [while smashing electronics]: "have i told you about [bam] how nerds destroy the world take conspicuous consumption as a lifestyle choice and combine it with early hardware adoption and you have great swaths of gadgetry out of stock because they're incrementally better than the last model and there are landfills full of functioning electronics wasted time, resources, money, etc. the best part is that these things were never necessary it has never mattered how thing a computer is." [smash]
this is too long. i like art.

hello hi i love your artwork I often revisit it just to Feel Something and wondered if you do book covers? :) (asking as a trad pub author with penguin random house!)
Oh my gosh, that’s such a kind thing to say 😭 thank you!! Oooh yes, making book covers has been a long time dream, and I’ve finally gotten the chance to dive into doing them this year!
I’ve been so lucky to have had practice with some zines last year, which led me to have an opportunity to create a cover for the RainbowCrate subscription box for one of their monthly titles. ((Cannot share it yet, but those who ordered an October box should be getting theirs in the coming weeks!))
If I could create artwork for books forever, I would 👌🏽
Tumblr media
I would consider the one I did for the Sumeru zine my magnum opus 🥹

ok somehow i discovered a comic called “penguin dreams and stranger things” that was created on march 1, 1985.
if you know anything about penguins then you know that homosexuality amongst penguins has been proven! also, the comic was inspired by the painting “daybreak” which was considered to be romantic featuring TWO women
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the comic is about characters michael binkley and the penguin, opus. in one of the comics, michael brings opus to school to meet his friend milo. this comic also mentions greenpeace’s rainbow warrior and how opus boarded it; i made a post about that here. there is also mention of “soviets” and “the big one”… vecna is also known as “one”/there’s a connection between the upside down, the lab, and russia. michael also dresses up as boy george. boy george is a gay male singer. does anyone know if boy george is featured on the official spotify playlist for mike???
Tumblr media
opus the penguin has a similar story to el’s?? both separated from their mother and doesn’t know who his father is. also, opus is associated with the rainbow warrior and el is associated with the rainbow room.
Tumblr media
this is how the character michael binkley is described… um, why are there similarities to mike lmfao??? michael binkley has a closet that is filled with anxieties?? anyone recall the scene of the one way sign pointing to mike’s closet in s4?? and in a recent behind the scenes photo, we can see a star wars poster on mike’s wall. mention of computer technology.. we know there’s a computer club from one of the behind the scenes photos. anyways, michael is expected to be a certain kind of person even though he has other desires… finn wolfhard: “mike is just trying to be as normal as possible”
Tumblr media
milo bloom was the main character and is friends with michael binkley. once opus the penguin is introduced, milo gets overshadowed by michael and opus. now, why does that sound like what happened with mike, el, and will?!?! also, there’s mention of spear fishing with a whale harpoon?? a sticker to stop fishing is on the door from the recent behind the scenes photo and there’s multiple mentions of whales on that door! i wrote a post about whales here.
Tumblr media
i know this is insane and maybe i’m reading too much into it, but this would be absolutely one hell of a fucking coincidence. like I AM CONNECTING THE DOTS I SWEAR

BTAS Penguin x Artist!Reader - A Portrait for The Penguin
You knew better than to stay up as late as you did in your studio. The last thing you needed was for Oz to grow concerned and have the surprise spoiled early.
You couldn’t help it though, you were so close to getting the portrait done.
As you painted his long black hair, you paint in the rich colors of his three piece suit, and you added detail to his monocle, including the small light reflecting off of it. You found your heart swell as the man you love slowly came to life on canvas.
You hoped that maybe, just maybe, with this painting Oswald can catch a glimpse of how you see him. An intelligent, cultured, and handsome man whom the world turned they’re back on purely because of his physical traits.
When he asks curiously just what subject could you be painting that has you so wound up in your studio. He couldn’t recall the last time you stowed away for hours on end in your studio.
You did your best to act indifferent. You were just in a motivated mood to get it done today…something generic but not entirely false. You assure him you’ll show it to him tomorrow once the paint is dried and the colors fully settle.
As the morning sun pierced through the slit between your curtains, you almost leaped out of bed. Like a child on Christmas morning, you gently nudged Oswald awake, it takes some time but finally, you both get out of bed.
You didn’t waste any time, not even bothering with breakfast. You grabbed his hand and immediately led him to your studio.
“Well, well, I don’t think I’ve seen you this enthused about any of your pieces. Am I witnessing you’re magnum opus, beloved?” Oswald chuckled sleepily.
You smiled widely with a hint of pride. You never thought about it, but it may as well be your magnum opus. You captured the person you loved the most forever on canvas, painted painstakingly by hand fueled by a concoction of your skill and loving devotion to him.
“Well, possibly…I think it could be.” You replied as you made your way around your easel and grabbed the loose edges.
“Are you ready, Oz?” You inquired, not being able to resist building the suspense.
“Of course, darling!”
You breathed and gently stripped the fabric off the canvas and easel. Slowly, the portrait was revealed.
Silence hung in the room like a damp towel for a beat. You walked around and saw a clear reaction of shock on Oswald’s face.
Oz was speechless, his jaw hung open, and his eyes were widen like saucers.
For a moment, you became self-conscious of your work…what if..he didn’t like it?
“W-Well…what do you think, Ozzie?” You asked trying to null the silence.
Oswald is trying to find the words. He shook his head and smacked his jaw open and close trying to make his tongue and lips form words.
“I-I-I…Is-Is that...me?”
“Of course, darling.” You smiled brightly.
Oz walked closer to the easel. He admired every detail.
For once, he got to see himself and actually liked what he saw.
“Is…is this how you see me?” Oswald asked in a hush whisper, still not taking his eyes off the portrait.
“Yes, Ozzie. I hoped that…maybe even for just a moment, it would help you get a glance at how I see you. How I adore you, darling.” You walked up behind him and embraced him from behind.
You two stood in comfortable silence. You both admired the art and the presence of each other.
“You’ve absolutely outdone yourself, my dove.” Oswald chuckled. “I-I love it…I can tell you put your whole heart into. The heart that I love.” He turned around to face you.
Instinctively, you both leaned down and shared a sweet grateful kiss. When you slowly pulled away from the kiss, a question came to mind.
“Now, where should we display it?” You asked giddily.
Oswald laughed. “Oh there’s plenty of possibilities, my dove, but before we display it…I have one condition.”
You titled your head in confusion.
He chuckled heartily some more. “My portrait can’t be by itself! You must paint yourself so that they can go together! Yes, together forever, a beautiful love forever captured on canvas.”
Your heart swelled. Just when you think that Oswald couldn’t absolutely get more romantic.
“I’ll be sure to get right on it.”

Eight odd moments in the Harry and Meghan documentary (that you probably missed)
From random owls to penguin party suits, we've rounded up the strangest moments in the Sussexes' Net:ix opus... so far
By Guy Kelly 9 December 2022 • 8:00am
It’s all too easy to say there’s absolutely nothing new to learn from the 5rst three episodes of Harry & Meghan.
Yes, Net?ix may have sold the documentary series as its answer to Kenneth Clark’s Civilisation, when it in fact had the production values of a mid-budget wedding video. Yes, we are all fairly au fait with the Sussex narrative by now, thanks to the Oprah interview, and the podcast, and the magazine pro5les, and the social media outriders, and the upcoming memoir, and the trailer for this very series. And yes, it could be said that retelling the story – which if we are honest is a 10-minute explainer, tops – over six hours is the televisual equivalent of selling gruel as haute cuisine.
But that would be to ignore the *details* in the series. The sheer, staggering number of odd details. Some are trivial, a few are telling, most are so cringeworthy as to be physically dangerous for viewers.
Blink and you miss them. Close your eyes and cover your ears for six hours and you’d de5nitely miss them (life hack). They’re there, though, and we’ve rounded them up so you don’t have to. Now, doesn’t it make more sense to hear them from us?
H&M
If, at some point over the last few years, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex haven’t sent an email to their lawyers with the subject line: “Can we send H&M (the clothes shop) a cease and desist? We want to copyright those letters” – well, I’ll eat my tiara. Throughout Harry & Meghan, the pair refer to themselves almost exclusively by initials (though, confusingly, he’s in her phone as “Haz”), which makes them sound like tell-all newspaper columnists who’ve come up with a quaint way to shroud their partner’s identity.
My colleague Chris Bennion made a fine point on Twitter, though. “The nice thing about the Harry & Meghan doc is that they keep calling him H, so you can pretend it’s a Line of Duty prequel,” he wrote. Imagining she’s always talking about H from Steps also improves the viewing experience, as does thinking Harry has been cast as James Bond, so keeps referring to *that* M. Oh, God, he’d love to be James Bond.
Is their camera ever backwards facing?
One of the seemingly never-ending torrent of Sussex selfies
He first spotted her in a selfie, they took one on their first date (“We just wanted to capture the feeling of sitting in that little restaurant,” Meghan says, helpfully describing for us how a photograph works), and they didn’t stop there, judging by the dozens threaded through these episodes. Like the millennial icons they are, couple sel5es are their currency, and they are loaded.
Occasionally we are moved to ask, “Hold on, who took that one? The rhino? I thought they wanted to be alone?” but generally they appear to be the kind of couple who would sit opposite you at dinner and spend the first ten minutes ignoring you, instead creating a perfectly framed portrait... of themselves. They would then dramatically put their phones face-down on the table, hold your hands in theirs, look deep into your eyes, and declare they will now be entirely present. At least until the starters come.
Harry's “list”
Checking it twice: Will we ever know what was on Prince Harry's list...? Probably not
At the time they met, we discover, Harry had a “list” of qualities he desired in Mrs Right, though when asked what was on there, simply gestures to Meghan and says, “This is the list.” A nice swerve, but we simply must know more about The List. Literal or imaginary? Notes app, or hard copy? If the latter, was it on a whiteboard in the kitchen of Kensington Palace, like quarterly targets for a marketing agency, or laminated and kept in his wallet for portability? Is it a family tradition? Did William have a list? But did Charles have a list? Wait, did Charles have *two* lists? Answers must be found.
The penguin onesies
The cringe climax. The acme of awkwardness. The zenith of second-hand embarrassment. “We had a little engagement party, and everyone was dressed in animal onesies. Meg and Harry were in matching penguin onesies (see artist's interpretation above), because penguins mate for life. And they were so sweet, and we had so much fun,” a British friend, Lucy Fraser, says in episode two.
It’s dibcult to know why you’d ever want to choose that theme, but far harder to know why you’d want such a thing broadcast 5ve years later. Still, while we’re on penguins, it’s helpful to note that in emperor penguin families (and we must assume they dressed as emperor penguins), the female goes to sea to feed, leaving the male to care for the egg until it hatches. This is simply information from the natural world, and not a comment.
Guy the beagle had both his front legs in plaster casts during the proposal
Unexplained: Guy the beagle's injury is never addressed
The fact it’s never really explained why Meghan’s rescue dog was casually “on stilts” (a euphemism for “recovering from two broken legs”) in November 2017, on the night of the chicken dinner engagement, is a plot point that simply must be tied up in episodes four to six. Otherwise they can expect a slew of investigative podcasts to launch this side of Christmas.
BBBBBBBBennie and the Jets
Family favourite, Elton John
The toddlers you know may prefer “Let It Go” or something from Coco Melon, but Archie Mountbatten- Windsor apparently has more sophisticated taste, preferring the 1974 classic “Bennie and the Jets” by family friend Sir Elton John, which has catchy, learn-with-me lyrics like: “We’ll kill the fatted calf tonight so stick around / You’re gonna hear electric music, solid walls of sound.”
Is it purely coincidental that “Bennie and the Jets” was originally released as a B-side for “Candle In The Wind”, which was re-written for Archie’s grandmother’s funeral? Yes, almost de5nitely. But will that stop us pointing it out? No, it will not.
The maddeningly significant hummingbirds
'Papa is a bird watcher'
Around 25 minutes into the second episode, there is an extended sequence in which Harry and Meghan do all they can to make Archie care about the fact there are two hummingbirds drinking from a feeder on the family terrace. The footage is very sweet, and nicely lit at sunset, but it also lingers in a way that makes it obvious the hummingbirds are being employed as some kind of visual metaphor.
In lieu of an explanation, we are left to work out exactly what the signi5cance is, and given what we’ve discovered about penguins already, some hummingbird facts might nudge us in the right direction. Hummingbirds, it turns out, migrate alone rather than in flocks – just like Harry and Meghan. Hummingbirds can fly backwards – just like how Meghan went back to California. And the beak of the sword-billed hummingbird can reach up to four inches long, so heavy that the birds may perch holding their bills straight up, which is a record for the longest bill relative to body size – just like how... OK no, that one doesn’t work.
An owl is the real star
Another avian moment, weirdly. The third episode features a short clip from a walkabout in Nottingham, when an old man in a baseball cap brought his pet barn owl to meet the couple. “Harry’s brought his bird to town so I brought mine,” he tells the reporter, while the owl rotates his downy head in pure, wise self- consciousness. It’s perhaps the outstanding highlight of the whole three hours, and yet serves no narrative purpose at all. Wonderful.
Thank you so very much! I really appreciate this! I have to include link…❤️

"Nearly all the literature that we have in Sumerian derives from the tablets written by these young Babylonian scribal apprentices, many of which where found in the remains of the houses of their teachers." - The Epic of Gilgamesh: Translated and with an introduction by Andrew Gorge (p. XIX) from Penguin Classics.
So you are freaking telling me the most records that we have of an old civilization is due to the homework in the teachers house.
OK maybe memes being the only thing in our culture to survive if an apocalypse where to start doesn't sound so far fetched anymore.
You know what's even worse: the actual mood these apprentices had.
Like not a page before it quoted one young student:
The door monitor said, 'Why did you go out without my say-so?' And he beat me.
The water monitor said, 'Why did you help yourself to water without my say-so?' And he beat me.
The Sumerian monitor said, 'You spoke Akkadian!' And he beat me.
My teacher said, 'Your writting is not at all good!' And he beat me.
Obviously my teachers ain't gonna beat me now but they still make me fail my grades if my writting isn't magnus opus perfection (some are chill tho) and that sumerian monitor is basically just the equivalent of the Spanish teacher saying "No English allowed only Spanish in class."
Anyways I'd find it embarrassing to have my math homework be displayed as the representation of knowledge at my time. Like don't even get me started on how bad my math equations are, It would be a miracle if they managed to understand my words in the first place.
