I'm currently replaying Ace Attorney in German and a really interesting thing they did in the translation is having Franziska use the informal you for everyone, even in court. This is really striking because she is the only character in the games so far to use the informal you, other than Maya and Phoenix with each other, and they've been friends for a year at this point, so that's to be expected. But they're in a courtroom, a very formal space, and they have never met before, so this is a situation where you definitely should use the formal you. By not doing so, she puts herself above everyone else and very clearly asserts her dominance. She's there to show them that she's better than them and she knows it. And as much as I like to criticise some of the choices made in the translation, this is such a great characterisation choice.

#finally a good use of the fact that there's two different forms of you in german and having it actually make sense for the character #because usually translations suffer from having characters use the formal you in situations where you really wouldn't #ace attorney #franziska von karma #phoenix and edgeworth use the formal you too even outside of court #but while that is also certainly a Choice that's for a different post #op keineahnung-ichhalt #my meta stuff

I need the non-german Tatort fans to understand how hilarious the existence of this fandom is. Like Tatort is the most "your parents would watch this" show ever, and over 10 million people watch it every Sunday. But just very few of them are actually invested. Every German has heard of the show, but the fandom is made of a few hundred people.

Adams Probleme sind am Ende von Fluch des Geldes immer noch nicht gelöst. Eigentlich das einzige gelöste Problem ist, dass die Polizei das Geld nicht mehr finden könnte. Alle anderen Probleme sind immer noch da. Es sind immer noch Leute hinter dem Geld her, und die werden ihn nicht ih Ruhe lassen, bis sie das Geld haben.

Wie wir an Boris in Herz der Schlange gesehen haben, ist es ihnen egal, ob er sagt, dass er das Geld nicht hat. Er wird sich nicht mit der Antwort, dass das Gald geklaut wurde, zufrieden geben, sondern das Geld trotzdem verlangen, sobald er aus dem Gefängnis kommt.

Und Boris ist auch nicht der einzige, der weiß, dass Adam Geld hat (oder hatte). Leute, die bereit sind, mit Gewalt vorzugehen. und das würden sie tun, auch wenn das Geld nicht mehr da ist. Er könnte ja lügen.

So sehr ich ihm Frieden wünsche, der ist an diesem Punkt noch nicht erreicht und es muss noch mehr geschehen. Und ich hoffe sehr, dass dieser Subplot jetzt nicht einfach fallengelassen wird.
