Allow me to recommend one more awesome Bobadin fic - since @sidhebeingbrand and @toughbreaks were kind enough to let me illustrate their fic for my "Jaster lives" square for @bobadinweek's Bobadin AU bingo card... with a bit of cheating - my love for which only grows and grows with time (and trust me, it does get better with every re-read! ). Fantastic and delightful world building with Victorian era and fae magic, and beautifully written characters where every single one of them vibrate with life. (Boba gets to suffer his 99 siblings, Jango is forced through some emotional catharsis kicking and screaming, and Din is trying his best to be a dad of a fae child. It's just the best, okay?) I'll eventually want to make one more drawing for chapter 2, I just realized during my latest re-read that I imagined the whole scene wrong ^^;

I think we forget sometimes that the vast majority of the crazy feats of godlike powers we see from speedsters are coming from these three. Wally, Bart and Barry have insane connections to the speedforce and their skill level is unmatched. What these three can do is by no means normal or average. They are op as fuck.

You have to remember that even... let's say Max Mercury is nowhere even remotely near their skill level. And we're talking about Max Mercury. The guy who knows more about the speedforce than anyone else and trained for years to master it. But Max (although he was faster than Bart when Bart was a child) isn't on the same playing field as Wally, Bart and Barry. Max couldn't enter the speedforce without Bart's assistance, Max couldn't leave the speedforce without Barry and Wally's assistance, Max can't time travel to a destination of his own choice, Max can't speed steal or fully pause time, ect ect. Max is one of the most skilled, most knowledgeable, most trained and most respected speedsters of all time. Max is the cream of the crop. You won't find another speedster better than Max. He's a shining example of what's humanely possible for speedsters to achieve.

But Wally, Bart and Barry aren't humanely possible. Those three are insane.

HE JUST WASN'T FASTER THAN BARRY OR EOBARD SO HE THOUGHT HE WAS THE WORST. Because Wally is fucking insane. He's an insane human being. i'm getting towards the end of the skypeia arc, & i'd like to say just how much i adore the way the female strawhats have been treated.

just... every aspect of how the way their characters have been previously contextualized influences the story-line is treated with a masterful amount of consideration. we're given so many layers to both of them that enrich not only their characters specifically, but the arc, and the one piece world as a whole. without nami & robin having their specific skills, and their specific values, without those being built upon, the story would have come to a halt.

you could not have skypeia without nami & robin being who they are as individuals. not just because they never would've gotten there without nami, but also because the way these women think is itself foundational to the machinations of the arc as a whole.

to be totally upfront, if you think any other strawhats were more central to the skypeia arc than nami & robin were you are full-on fucking lying to yourself.

this says sooo much about him: his deductive reasoning skills, his appreciation for art, his understanding of other people’s psychology. i need more stories where joey gets to play detective, especially in an art or music history context, and i NEED him to have proper dialogue

#ofmd #stizzy #izzy hands #stede bonnet #like... maybe stede is teaching ed because he wants to have someone to play against and ed is trying his best to learn #and brilliant tactician that he is ed of course can understand the game and the rules very well that's not even remotely the issue #it's just that... well the game is about strategy and planning and anticipating your opponent's moves and ultimately overpowering them #and that's quite like pirating now isn't it except these are tiny wooden pieces on the board and ed is just used to this kind of strategic #planning on a much larger and livelier level with higher stakes and with the added element of human unpredictability and never quite #knowing what rules someone else is playing by. so he does learn and he plays okay but tends to lose focus somewhere in the first ten turns #so one day they're trying to get through a full game and izzy is sitting off to the side watching them play and ed is kind of trying but his #mind is already wandering elsewhere and he makes frankly ridiculously bad move and izzy is just like 'wait' then sighs walks over to them #and puts the piece back and makes a different move instead saying 'do this instead' and ed's face is just like ??? confused betrayal because #why and how did he not know izzy could play chess?? and stede's eyes of course fill with excitement at the thrill of a new opponent and also #because he's been taking it easy on ed while he gets the hang of the game but is actually rather skilled at chess and would love to impress #with his skills even if the only person who would truly get the brilliance is izzy (and stede admits to himself that izzy does know what #he's doing given that the move he corrected for ed is exactly what he would have done) #so anyway stede does his whole big eyes hopeful voice *vague gestures* thing and is like 'oh you play? care for a game?' and izzy stares #him down for what feels like forever but is actually about 8 seconds before saying 'one. one game' so they reset the board and it's only #fair for stede to let izzy go first but for izzy's first turn instead of moving a piece he rotates the whole board so the white pieces are #in front of stede and says 'i don't think so. not letting you have the excuse to say i only won because i went first' and stede #is a little taken aback but you know what? challenge accepted. game on #it's about twenty turns in when stede starts getting nervous that izzy does in fact know his shit and another ten turns later when he #realizes he may be in over his head #and while it isn't a carelessly simple defeat izzy does end up beating stede #and isn't there just something so satisfying about being the cause of stede making the displeased but invigorated expression he's wearing #(do i have any clue how izzy became a chess genius? no but we can speculate. maybe he played regularly with someone on a ship growing up bc #it was a good way to pass the downtime in an entertaining way without having to talk much at all. or maybe he learned as a child and was #required to keep strict hours of practice so because really good but kind of resented it so maybe this is the most he's ever enjoyed playing #or maybe he was watching as stede taught ed to play and just picked up on some of stede's strategies and/or snuck one of his chess books out

Wesley and Gunn come from opposite worlds, they get involved with the supernatural from completely different reasons. One is willingly the other is not, one is for prestige and family legacy the other for survival. When these characters first appear on-screen they are, if not content, at least accustomed to their worlds, and they can only think about going the rest of their lives the same way they have always gone. It's amazing how they end up working together, saving each other lives, best friends, even falling for the same girl.

Another thing they share is that when they have a crisis where they think they have failed in a big way, they start to crave things from each other worlds, something completely different :

Wesley, after failing miserably as a watcher, wants to be a rogue hunter, forget polished manners and flourish language, he wanted to get more physical and never run from a fight or a hard decision, and make quick gut desicions instead of thinking too much - everything Gunn had lots of experience with. The big difference is that Gunn always acted with his group, he knew there was strength in numbers, while Wesley craved it but he romanticised the lone badass hero. Then when Fred "chooses the other guy" Wesley starts to obsess over the prophecy of Angel killing Connor and well- we know the rest.

Like so, when Gunn losses his connection to the place and group of people he grew up with, and later to Fred, we see him fantasize about fancy things, knowledge, etiquette, "class". They are mostly little comments, like before formally breaking up with Fred: Gunn says he sees himself and Fred living in "a place like this" while they are in a luxurious house, or when he goes with Gwen undercover to the house of an ambassador: the show makes a point of showing us he is really enjoying being in that kind of situation. Then season 5, when he gets that knowledge implant, is just taking it to an extreme. The big difference is that Wesley is curious and passionate about the lore and languages he learns, while Gunn never liked laws, he just wanted that knowledge to be useful.

Its interesting how they valued the other so much, it's like when their own self-confidence was at their worst they attempted to -unconsciously- take skills/characteristics from the other, but by forgetting themselves

#And its sad to see because Wesley never lest go of his watcher's side #that side is always seen as valuable #but all the practical skills Gunn picked growing up? not only the fighting skills #the creativity to use few resources and make it work #the ability to make quick hard decisions #the effortless way he could act charming or intimidating #some contacts from before? anything?? Then he literally ends up in a place where he is forced to live that laser cut model of a happy life #but as a form of torture with a pendant that makes him forget who he is. again. taken to the estreme. Takayama has done everything he could intentionally or not to kill anything human within him. he doesn’t know what hes doing or #who or what he is and it’s scary. he fails to save people over and over and he thinks he’s unsalvagable. #the real reason he reached out to the bird club was because he was lonely. so crushingly lonely. he can fight and kick the trauma #all he wants but at the end of the day hes the same kid he was the day his parents died and he became a seraphim #and maybe that’s why the third blackout is when he was about to finally meet eva. she is the only proof that he is real #eva is the only proof that takayama was once a kid. the only reminder #eva and Takayama’s relationship is weird but to me it I would say to Takayama Eva is like a mother to him #and eva used him from the start. #idk Takayama makes me lose my mind. have u ever considered how takayama #views himself as a bug. and the fact that bugs have never bothered karasuma #karasuma knows what Takayama is like but Karasuma has seen all of Takayama and still loves him #anyways how are YOU guys I wrote this while in horrible stomach pain. #birdmen #takayama sou
