I feel like with Gear 5 comin up in the anime I should reiterate this.

Luffy only feels like Joyboy to Zunesha. “As if you’re right there.” and “we should put our faith in this boy.”

If it was actually Joyboy she wouldn’t have said “should and this boy” she’d have just said Joyboy again. It seems the entire fandom is missing this.

Luffy confirms it himself. Nobody is “taking over” his body. Hes not a reincarnation or being controlled by the will of his devil fruit. He’s not actually Joyboy or Nika.

What a journey!

Spoilers for One Piece up to chapter 1046.

Just finished volume 103 of One Piece, officially the last bit I’m going to read until the next volumes are physically available. (Don’t like reading on screens, manga even less so). How much did I enjoy this story so far? I have tears in my eyes right now thinking about it.

My goodness! I cannot imagine being a weekly reader over 25+ years to get to this point. The sense of having earned the power ups, and finally Gear Five, the way the characters grow over the years. And yet, I feel like if I didn’t know, I would have stopped reading around Fish Man Island. So, pros and cons to joining the journey near the end. Define ups and downs, but Oda found a hell of a high in Wano.

I started reading this manga during the hype for Gear Five in the anime. I watched the clips, and I honestly fell in love with the silly rubber boy and his silly god powers (does help that Drums of Liberation is a damn fine bop). I know the next saga is called ‘final’, and I’m looking forward to experiencing it as it happens.

Chapter 1062: Satellites

It feels like we’re getting back to some classic One Piece humor with this new arc, and I’m enjoying it.

Let’s start with the cover story.

So, we had the two intruders at Chocolat Town back in chapter 1046. Looks like one of them was Kuzan. I’m guessing this isn’t Blackbeard’s full crew since we saw the man himself go after Hancock then kidnap Coby. If this cover story is happening around the same time, this might be the other part of that crew, though. After the road poneglyph while Big Mom is away?

On to the chapter!

Robin voices many of the same concerns fandom had after the reveal at the end of last chapter:

And we get confirmation of what many were theorizing: that Vegapunk has “satellite” bodies that he is controlling. It’s interesting that a man of science like Vegapunk would have satellites imbued with emotional personalities -- especially in the wake of the last science-related arc in Whole Cake where Sanji’s brothers had their emotions removed; and we know Judge and Vegapunk worked together in MADS. 

Wait. Are these Vegapunk’s various personality traits removed and placed into the satellites? If so, I wonder if Judge’s work inspired Vegapunk or the other way around.

Hmmmm.

Relating to the name Lilith, I immediately thought of the first wife of Adam and the mother of all demons. That would fit her as the “evil” satellite Vegapunk.

The Straw Hats left behind on the Sunny are under threat from Lilith, but she gets a wakeup call that an Emperor’s crew isn’t going to be easy pickings.

I love these two panels. I love Robin being portrayed alongside Zoro as a badass fighter. That’s my queen right there.

Meanwhile, back with Jinbei and his Devil Fruit eating children...

Confirmation of many theories that Bonney is Kuma’s daughter. We’ve got our princess for the arc, lol.

I can’t help but seeing a parallel between Bonney and Viola from Dressrosa -- a princess becoming a pirate to protect loved ones, assuming Bonney became a pirate to help her father.

Anyway, the small group gets into the lab and finds... food?

Like I said, Dad Jinbei and his children XD

The food’s a hologram, and it seems we’ve switched genres from samurai film to sci-fi.

Also, I was howling at Luffy’s sheer rage at the food not being real. I love him so much.

We meet another Vegapunk satellite: Atlas. This one is supposed to be wrath. 

Atlas, of course, was a Titan in Greek mythology who, after a failed battle against the gods, was condemned to hold the heavens on his shoulders.

Atlas punches one of the holograms, revealing that she has gloves that let her touch light.

This seems like it would be useful in fighting Kizaru. Just a thought.

We also see the machine that makes food. I foresee Sanji being highly offended by this.

And shoutout to this post pointing out the Vega Cola. Who do we know that admires Vegapunk and powers his inventions with cola? Franky gonna have a field day. 

Finally, we see CP0 is on the way to Egghead as well. And guess who’s back!

I’m sure Lucci is much stronger than he was in Enies Lobby, but there’s no way he could fight Luffy now, right?

Considering Lucci is actually questioning the orders to take out Vegapunk, it wouldn’t shock me if we see a shift in allegiances.

(Also, Stussy. Love her.)

My favorite One Piece chapters of 2022. 1036-1070 released during the year.

1036 - Bushido is the Way of Death: First, that title is cool as hell and perfect for a chapter which focuses on contrasting the negative side of the resolve of the samurai against Usopp's survival instincts. Whitebeard division commander, retainer of Oden, and Kiku's older brother Izo arrives and acknowledges God Usopp before the two say some meaningful words about the samurai's way of life. My second favorite scene of the Raid.

1041 - Komurasaki: Raizo brushes off the heat of the fire, calling it nothing, and outlasts Fukurokuju. Orochi is trapped under the rubble and Hiyori reveals her identity. An injured Izo makes his stand and dunks on the cp0 agents, killing one and heavily injuring another. Usopp continues his brave rescue of Kin and Kiku. That panel of Luffy rushing Kaido is raw as hell.

1043 - Let's Face Death Together!!! Nami standing up to Kaido and him respecting her for it, I love it so much, this is the chapter where Nami cemented herself as my favorite character in One Piece.

1044 - Warrior of Liberation: Hiyori catharsis. Gear 5 Luffy humiliates Kaido, that cowardly liar, with cartoon physics-driven attacks. Great payback for him making Oden dance for all those years.

1046 - Raizo: Raizo and Jinbei teaming up to put out the flames of Onigashima castle is great. Raizo's having the water stored, his reason of wanting to prevent a similar disaster to Oden Castle being burned from happening again, shown in a short flashback on Zou, is a perfect motivation for someone who has been through what he has.

1048-1050 - Twenty Years, The World That Should Be, and Honor feel like one long chapter: Kaido is defeated and Orochi's final head is severed. I love the volcanic eruption as a send off to their tyranny. Toko changing the message on her lantern to thank her dad, ahhh she is so brave. I very much got teary eyed over that. The flashback showing a bit more about Toki struggling to send everyone to the future/part from her kids, just heartbreaking. She's so strong-willed and I see where Kiku and Hiyori got their own bravery, kindness, patience, and resilience from.

1051 - Shogun of Wano Country, Kozuki Momonosuke: Seeing the Akazaya, Shinobu, and Hiyori lined up is incredible after everything they've all been through, I was in awe while reading. Love Kin'emon being proud of Momo. Kin definitely wrote his speech, Denjiro probably helped.

1052 - A New Morning: Kiku being happy in the women's bath, Nami having accepted her request, is a very sweet interaction. Who has a bigger bust size? Zoro or Yamato?

1053 - New Emperors: The party is in full swing! I'm very much looking forward to the anime adaptation of these end of arc chapters.

1055 - The New Era: The Akazaya, Momo and Yamato working to defend the Capital/Luffy is awesome. Why was Kiku absent though? The Old Wano reveal is perfect. Wano's mainland is one of my favorite settings in fiction and the fact that there was still more to show in the final chapters of the arc is mondo cool.

1056 - Cross Guild: Samurai family being cute and having down time. Love Kin being a huge simp for Tsuru and everyone's differing reactions to it.

1061 - Future Island Egghead: My favorite new character of the arc, Hibari, is introduced. She's got a goofy and expressive face and her connection to Koby is fun. A simple reason for liking the chapter but it's mine. Drake where u at?

Reading One Piece: Chapters 1046-1047

-I swear to god, when we finally get the backstory of how this giant elephant met Luffy’s previous form I am going to flip.

-Oh right, I almost forgot there was a whole other brawl going on underneath Luffy’s feet. And things are... not looking good, are they?

-Okay, using Zou’s floodwater and Jimbei’s waterbending in tandem is a really smart way of putting out these flames.

-...you know, I give Oda a lot of shit for his female character designs.

But I guess it could always be worse huh

-Huh, Roger didn’t even have a Devilfruit? He just relied on Haki? Interesting...

-And the lanterns fly up into the sky. Carrying the hopes of the downtrodden with them as they float past the battlefield where their hopes are being made real.

-”Are you insane?! Ever last one of you is going to die!” “And what’s wrong with that?” Hooooooly shit this is gonna be nuts

no because I can't believe how it FLEW over our heads that the gomu gomu no mi is actually a version of the hito hito no mi

think about it,,,

the gomu gomu no mi was introduced as a paramecia type devil fruit, one that gives someone inhumane, superpower-like abilities. people who carry paramecia devil fruit powers include kidd, law, buggy, doflamingo, and whitebeard, for convenience's sake in this lil analysis

comparing these guys to luffy, we can see how the difference between their paramecia fruits and luffy's now revealed zoan fruit was quite obvious in hindsight

let's use doflamingo first. his power, using strings as both a weapon and means of transportation, is insane. we even see him using his awakened power as transforming other things around him into strings. but notice how both his regular and awakened form didn't affect his body itself. even though one could point out how he can make a clone of himself using his power, his awakening and his devil fruit abilities did not give him any sort of physical change or power or anything

looking at kidd next, his power to control magnetism is also really cool, I personally mark kidd's power as one of my favorites, especially with his awakening. but again, we see that his powers don't give him any sort of physical form change, advantage, etc, whatever you wanna call it (him using his power to build himself an arm doesn't count in this case because it does not give him a set physical change, he can alter the shape and size of his 'arm' but at the end of the day, it does not give him any bodily physical changes)

you can see that with everyone else as well. even an argument about Buggy can't be made considering his devil fruit, while also having THE MOST POTENTIAL THAT I WILL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT, doesn't give him any sort of core bodily physical change during use. the same can be said with robin and brook's devil fruits

why do I keep mentioning physical changes specifically?

Because we have Luffy's gears.

Gear 2 and 3 are both powers that one could see a regular rubber paramecia fruit user having, right? using your body to pump your blood faster, that has relatively rubber-qualities, as well as pumping up your bones to go giant as your skin stretches with it.

but Gear 4 got me thinking,

Gear 4 physically changes Luffy's body to be overall bigger, his muscles blown, his hair doing that cute little floaty thing, etc, the bottom line is that his physical body changes

the specification of Gear 4: Bounceman and Gear 4: Snakeman is a REALLY BIG note to take here, considering it's the same devil fruit, same gear, but different specifications behind them, both in usage and physical form (ie Bounceman being better for raw strength, whereas Snakeman is better for speed)

when have we seen a paramecia devil fruit user physically change their body to the point of them having different 'forms' with the usage of their devil fruit????

answer: we never have.

but you know one devil fruit user we've seen using their devil fruit to give themselves different 'forms'?

CHOPPER HAS THE HITO HITO NO MI AND HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO USE HIS POWER TO CREATE DIFFERENT FORMS, DIFFERENT 'POINTS', DIFFERENT 'GEARS'

this is why anyone who says that the "hito hito no mi: model nika" reveal was 'sloppy' or 'out of character/out of story' or whatever, because in reality it was in our faces FOR SO LONG, and it's a GREAT FUCKING TWIST THAT WAS BUILT UP SO PERFECTLY YET NOBODY SAW IT COMING

Oda just knows how to tie his shit together and I honestly can do nothing but applaud

Alright before I go into this blurb SPOILER WARNINGS and also sorry to like the ten people that follow me this isn't my usual bullshit but fuck it I'm talking about one piece right now in a completely disorganized fashion.

I just went through chapter 1045 and 1046, and we see how Luffy's using his new powers in wild and zany ways, which isn't new for him, but it feels "different" this time. This new form, Joy Boy, is already showing its physical repercussions, but there's something happening mentally too. Luffy has put his crew in risky situations before, believing they can handle it, but this time it almost seems ... Dismissive, cruel even, as the entire castle is burning up in flames. Luffy is losing himself to this extreme Joy that it seems all other emotions and moral concerns are going out the window. His heart is thundering. The entire island of Onigashima will crash down from the sky if Kaidou can't maintain it with his clouds - and in response Luffy grabs a fricken lightning bolt and prepares to smash it down on Kaidou (left as a cliffhanger right there). The next chapter I guess will decide whether he strikes or not - and will show if he's so far gone, or if he's still in control of this almost god-like persona.

A lot of this lines up with tales of how gods can be overly destructive, unempathetic, and caught up in themselves rather than thinking of others, shown with Luffy contemplating what to name his attacks rather than worrying about what the attack is going to do.

My fear/head canon idea is that Luffy is going to do something undoable, something he will regret. For him, it's always been about getting stronger - he blames himself, his perceived weakness, when he couldn't save Ace, when he couldn't stop his crew from being separated by Kuma. His crew has managed to pull through his antics before, but what if they cannot this time? I think it's possible this time that instead of protecting his Nakama, he'll become the number one threat. I can bet that the next few chapters will be some variation of him either realizing what he's doing and getting it under control, or continuing to blindly let loose and risk the lives of everyone involved.

What good is a King without his kingdom?

What's the significance of sitting on a throne, if the room is empty?

Ok - other thing I wanted to discuss that's a more shippy, headcanon-y thing:

I want to ask a question (panic tw) - have you ever been so joyous, so happy, that it sends you into a panic attack? Laughed so hard until something is wrong and suddenly you can't breathe, your hearts pounding, you can't think straight? But you're laughing - you must be happy, right?

I'm wondering if that's what Luffy's suffering right now. A joy so powerful it's sending him into a panic attack. Spiraling out of control.

Now who's been unconscious/pre-occupied this whole time to see Luffy's current state? His first mate - Zoro was knocked away by Kaido, right before Luffy woke up and began to transform. Zoro has no idea this is going on. As current as it gets, Zoro is unconscious with Franky and Chopper, and while the castle fire has been put out, the battle above rages on. If Zoro wakes up and sees this, I think it's possible he may realize that Luffy could be jeopardizing his dream of becoming Pirate King if he can't think straight, if he gets "stuck" as Joy Boy. Someone's going to have to stop him, and it can only be a friend, his crew, to remind him of himself. And there's no doubt in my mind that the moment Zoro's conscious his ass would be the first bolting into the thick of it, Sanji too.
