Gravity Falls Rewatch: Post-Canon: One Crazy Summer: A Look Back at Gravity Falls (Part 1/?)

Where would those papers have gone if Alex didn’t keep them? Was there more than Disney usually handles?

All these people who helped work on the show seem to really understand how special it is. And they made it that way :)

Gravity Falls could have been a Scooby-Doo like show about a recent divorcée lmao

Alex basically charmed the Disney people to let him make his earth-shattering show

I’m so glad that the people at the heart of Gravity Falls were friends and really liked each other

Maybe this is obvious but it’s cool how Alex’s art style carried heavily into the show’s art style

I love how the theme of growing closer or growing apart was a pretty early idea it seems

Dana: “a big charm of gravity falls is how accessible the characters are” that’s so true and I feel like she took that to heart

Just realized how Dipper and Mabel embody different approaches to adolescence/tweenhood where you’re kinda stuck in the middle and one wants to grow up and the other one doesn’t

Jason apparently got the part partially because he has a voice crack? That’s beautiful man

I kinda wish we had a Dipper commentary of the show. Like in character and all

Mabel charmed the crew really quick :)

the burning question on no one's minds is where are the one crazy summer moms? George's and Hoops' live off the island so that's taken care of but the presence / mention of a father figure for Clay and Egg, and Ack Ack, but no mention of mothers, is kind of interesting.

the stork father requires more speculation as to his demeanor. the twins work in his shop, unsupervised in one scene, and handle most of his business. they don't look very old, so their father is also probably still young enough to handle these things. therefore there's some reason for him never being present in the shop. my guess is that their mother died when they were younger, but not so young that they don't remember her well. clay and egg take care of each other well (they get along, clay reminds egg to be on time and to stay focused, egg is very protective of gentle, quiet clay as demonstrated by the times teddy hits him). they both fill roles for each other that a motherly figure might have used to. and because they are running the shop it makes sense that they need to take care of their father as well. however their father still seems to care for and trust them as shown by him letting them use an engine for the boat, having & sons on the stork shop sign even though they're young enough to maybe not have earned it yet.

since Ack's father is a character in the movie, the situation of his mother is more interesting. I would guess that Ack's mother left them when he was very young, with no contact in the present day. Ack's father is very domineering and emotionally guarded, disliking "weakness" and gentleness. (on a side note, the way Ack is kicked out for not wanting to join the Marines makes me think there's something else going on, another "feminine" reason Ack's father might kick him out. maybe Ack laid everything on the table when he told his father he wasn't enlisting?) anyways the fact that Ack goes to stay with George's grandma instead of pleading with his mother to stay, or going to stay with her instead, confirms the no contact theory. Ack's father is so overbearing that it makes sense that Ack's mother would leave, and that his father would despise anything that might remind him of the mother.

anyways! this has been pointless character analysis with headgehug. go watch this movie or else. it's better than you'd think.

House md really is the gayest of gay queerbait. Like I’m sorry but besides SPN and maybe Sherlock no one was doing it like them. And the thing is I don’t even think it was intentional??? House md was unbelievably popular but in a normal Game of Thrones, Grey’s Anatomy way. It’s the kinda show that everyone’s mom watched when it first came out on cable (mine included). Appealing to a young queer internet audience in 2007 wasn’t a marketing strategy they would ever attempt. It doesn’t make sense.

And yet. 

The sheer amount of gay jokes and allegories is just overwhelming by the time you get to the last season. Amber is Wilson’s House proxy, House and Wilson move in together TWICE, the fake marriage proposal, the exploration of toxic masculinity, Wilson’s 3 failed marriages, fucking everything about the last few eps. Like what other tv show spent almost a decade creating the most co-dependent, self-sabotaging relationship between its two main male characters that is essentially the backbone of the entire show. They literally ride off into the sunset together. Idk what else you want from me.
