One of my part-time jobs is doing research and some clerical work for a boss who works in a medical/science field. (Further details are being held back for the sake of privacy). I'm glad to have the job and I do have legitimate research skills... which is good, because my skillset and specialties are NOT medical/science-related. (I am so in the humanities and liberal arts that one of my STEM friends once told me, "Good luck not having a career.") I am the lowest on this office totem pole in both salary and qualifications, but I do my work well and I'm appreciated overall.

Recently, my boss forwarded an email to me because it was about a new subject he wanted me to look into. In this email, he was replying to a friend of his, saying that no, he hadn't heard about this topic that his friend was concerned about, but that he will ask his "research staff" to look into it.

Not only am I unsure if he'd ask the other people in the office to look into this (not impossible, but two of them have too many higher duties to perform, the other two don't work with researching this stuff at all, and all of them get paid more than me), but he had also only forwarded this email to me, with no other CC's. Either he sent this email to the others with BCC's (not too likely, based on past email behavior), he DID ask one of the other workers separately (see above thoughts), there is someone else working in this office that I am unaware of (not likely), or I am the one and only member of "research staff."

If I ever talk to someone and am told, "Don't worry, I've put my research staff on the case," I will now IMMEDIATELY imagine that it's just one guy in his mid-twenties who has Tumblr open on another tab and is debating whether to start his research now or look at furry porn first.
